She opens her eyes and struggles to make out the dark room around her. One thing she knows instantly – her wrists are bound and she’s tied to a chair, unable to move. As she screams for help, she hears footsteps outside. He’s coming…
Fifteen-year-old Lindy Rosen has been having nightmares for weeks, waking in a panic, screaming that there’s a man in her room watching her sleep. Her parents assumed it was her overactive imagination, but when one morning they find Lindy missing from her bedroom, they’re not so sure. Detective Jenna Alton is called in to investigate.
Within hours of the schoolgirl going missing, the kidnapper reaches out to Jenna with a video of Lindy bound and tied to a chair, crying to be set free. And a simple message – you’ve got 24 hours to find her or I kill her.
Jenna’s team work around the clock to try to find Lindy before the deadline, but time runs out, and Jenna receives a devastating message. The killer has made good on his promise. He’s playing a dangerous game. And no one knows what his next move will be.
But just two days later, one of Lindy’s school friends is taken in the middle of the night and the countdown begins again.
Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane ... along with the team of Shane Wolfe, Deputies Walters and Webber and Maggie .... return for a sixth installment of this gripping crime fiction. Although sixth in line, it reads easily as a stand alone, but I highly recommend starting at the very beginning. The characters are well worth following.
A teenage girl sees a man in her room. Her parents come running when she screams ..but there is no one there. Five nights in a row she has this 'dream' .. until the parents take a 2-second look and tell her to go back to sleep. But then she disappears from her room ....
Jenna gets a call that a girl has gone missing. Within hours, Jenna gets a text from the killer giving her 6 hours to find the girl. A video is attached proving that he has her. The killer has made good on his promise. He’s playing a dangerous game. And no one knows what his next move will be.
And then another teenager disappears under the same circumstances, followed by another text and video.
But its when the killer turns eyes on Jenna and takes someone close to her that it becomes very personal ... and it becomes a cat and mouse game.
Completely addictive from the very start, this is a series ... and author ... worth following. I really enjoy how the characters relate to each other... they're loyal, trustworthy, and have each others' backs. The story premise is a very good one, riveting from the very first page. The suspense holds until the final word in the final chapter.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Whisper In The Night is book 6 in the Kane and Alton series... book 6 already?! I hope DK Hood has plenty more stories for this team of detectives ... I don't want this series to ever end. It is so good and I always know when I pick one of these books up that I am in for one hell of a ride. This instalment was no different and I devoured it in 2 sittings. If you have not met this awesome team then you need to correct that now, starting with book one. You will no be sorry that you listened to me 😀
Black Rock Falls sounds like a beautiful place to live, aside from the amount of crime.. in particular serial killings.. that they have. How can one town have so many bad people! This time young girls are being taken from their beds and murdered. The first girl is 15 year old Lindy Rosen, who has been having nightmares about a man in her room for weeks. Jenna receives a deadline from the killer but they fail to find her in time. 2 days later another schoolgirl is taken. The team have their work cut out for them this time, and so many suspects.
These books are so fast paced they don't give you the chance to catch your breath. I love this series and have nothing but praise for the author.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.
Detectives Jenna Alton, David Kane and the rest of the team are back and Black Rock Falls has another murder case to solve. Someone is kidnapping teenage girls then contacting Jenna directly telling her exactly how long she has to find the girls and that the clock has started ticking. The press have called him the shadow man. With no clues or DNA evidence left behind at the scene of the kidnapping, Kane and Alton have their work cut out to solve these crimes before another girl is taken.
This is a really good series. With a large suspect list to work through the team need to work hard to find out who's behind the kidnapping. The pace is set fast with a lot of twists. I had no idea who was behind the kidnapping. The scenery is so well described it makes you feel that your in Black Rock Falls. I liked the cat and mouse chase feel to the story, sitting on the edge of my seat, willing them to get to the girls before something happened to them. Great series. Great writing. Read this series from the beginning, you won't be disappointed. I do recommend this book.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author D. K. Hood for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
D.K. Hood keeps up her high quality storytelling while peppering this instalment with dark twists, all to capture the reader’s attention. The story delves into some familiar territory, as readers continue to ponder how a small Montana community could be rife with murder and serial killers, but also provides unique perspectives and styles. A girl goes missing from her home after complaining of nightmares, while her family is perplexed. When she ends up dead, the town takes notice, though it is the next missing girl and a suspected ‘Shadow Man’ that has Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane realising the danger on their hands. With some military-style boobytraps erected to cause further damage, both know this is one killer whose motives run deeper than a little mayhem. While Alton and Kane seek to rectify the situation, they discover that things are anything but simple. Hood dazzles and keeps the momentum going with this piece.
Plagued with nightmares, Lindy Rosen finds herself waking up in tears for weeks on end. Her family is worried for her, especially when they can find nothing in her room to piece it all together. When the fifteen-year-old goes missing from her bedroom one day, things move to the next level and the Rosen family seek the assistance of Sheriff Jenna Alton.
While Sheriff Alton is puzzled, she brings in her second-in-command, Deputy Dave Kane, to assist. Things take another turn when a video emerges from the kidnapper, demanding that Lindy be found in the next 24 hours or she will die. Alton and Kane realise that they have a game of cat and mouse here, though the stakes are as high as they get.
Working every angle, Sheriff Alton and her team seek out every possibility to find Lindy, going so far as to coming upon some of the kidnapper’s military tricks. As they are unsuccessful, a video emerges, explaining that Lindy has been killed. This causes havoc for the entire Black Rock Falls community.
When a second teenaged girl goes missing, the clock begins anew. The similarities are a little worrying; as both girls had been complaining of nightmares. As Alton and Kane begin pushing forward to locate this kidnapper/killer—now dubbed The Shadow Man—they learn that things may not be as they seem, pushing the narrative into some unique situations in the hunt to find the next girl before time runs out. Chilling and exciting in the same breath, D.K. Hood knows how to spin a story with ease.
D.K. Hood keeps impressing with this series, told in a simple and straightforward manner. The narrative flows and keeps the reader along for quite the ride, while there is surely a great deal to digest within its pages. A solid foundation allows for things to build from there, taking little time to expound on minutiae and keeping the intensity high as Black Rock Falls is the setting for yet another gruesome crime.
The ongoing character development provides series fans with a wonderful ability to track Hood’s interests in her protagonists. There is some personal growth and a great deal of professional emergence in this piece, which is sure to keep the reader on their toes as they discover the connection between Sheriff Jenna Alton, Deputy Dave Kane, and others. The way in which Hood develops her characters is both intriguing and alluring, as nothing is quite as it seems throughout this piece.
The plot development is key to this piece, as Hood wastes no time in keeping her series fans in check. The constant evolution of crime and murder in Black Rock Falls, is not lost on the series fan, but it is the complexity that develops, keeping the reader wondering what is to come. I was keen on the addition of new things to keep Alton and Kane on their feet, and well as the hints that this could easily be something that adds layers to the story. I always enjoy how Hood makes the most of her characters and their situations, which is seen yet again. Eager for more and hoping that Hood does not lose the momentum in the next novel.
Kudos, Madam Hood, for you never seem to be out of ideas with this series.
D. K. Hood's books have the best police procedural in them, one of my auto-downloads. Jenna and Kane combination gets me every time; I am always excited when I start to read their story. And now with hints of cuddles between them, I love these books all the more.
This story too had a killer kidnapping young girls and killing them. But the difference was that he sent a video and gave Jenna a time frame to find him.. Tick Tock... the time sped and Jenna was late.... Till the serial killer set his sights on Jenna herself.
Having read all of author D. K. Hood's books, I found her writing fluid. Race against time was the beat these cops worked on. Always on the back foot and one step behind, their determination were fathoms ahead of the killer. Nothing and nobody could stop Jenna from finding him, not even 2 bullet wounds at the back.
The team, as always, was extremely cohesive. Even with a troubled mind, Jenna gave the perfect orders, she knew how to lead her men. The one thing which caught my eye was these cops, especially Jenna, felt extreme fear, one which crippled their brains and shook the soul out of their bodies, but they always faced it bravely, taking one on their chin. D. K Hood's writing showed its brilliance when I got to see Jenna's core of steel, the way she straightened her spine, in spite of mind-numbing fear. Always inspiring.
The story reached its shocking end with the identity of the killer. And no, I didn't guess it. The two halves of my brain kept warring, one wanted to play detective, other just read. A great police procedural by a talented author.
After being disappointed by Where Angels Fear I was hoping that Whisper in the Night, the sixth instalment in the Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane series set in Black Rock Falls, Montana, would be as nail-biting as other instalments, and Hood makes a welcome return to form with this one. It is gripping, compulsive and reads independently of the others without a reader missing vital knowledge or backstory.
Here, Jenna gets involved in the ultimate game of cat-and-mouse when she receives taunting messages from the abductor of a teenage girl, Lindy Rosen, who threatens to kill her if they fail to identify and catch him within a 6-hour window. Needless to say, all resources are deployed and Kane and Alton throw themselves into it with all of the volition needed. When another girl disappears they know they have a ruthless operator to deal with. Can they save the two innocent girls lives or will they run out of time as the clock counts down?
Despite there being a lot of characters they are sufficiently rounded that they don't all sound exactly like one another and the perpetrator, in particular, is a creepy and rather demented individual known as the Shadow Man. There are plenty of twists and surprises in store and the tension slowly rises as the police race against time. Hood keeps the criminal's identity hidden adeptly right up until the satisfying and shocking conclusion. Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.
Detectives Jenna Alton, David Kane and the rest of the team are back with another murder case to solve. This time a 15 year old Lindy Rosen is taken from her bed and 2 days later another schoolgirl is taken .Can Alton and Kane race against time to save the two innocent girls lives or will they run out of time ?
Whisper In The Night is the 6th book in the police procedural Alton and Kane series. I love this addictive series with great lead characters, well thought out plots with twists and turns and excellently paced writing . Looking forward to reading the next one I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
Whisper in the Night by D.K. Hood is the 6th in the Detectives Kane and Alton series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books) Jenna Alton is the Sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana. She is new to being Jenna Alton. She has a new name, and a new ID, because her past is still out there. She’s former DEA. Deputy David Kane also has a new name and new ID. Similar reasons. He’s a former Special Forces sharpshooter with exceptional profiling skills. He lost his wife in a bombing, that left him with a plate in his head, and bad headaches. Forensic Scientist Shane Wolfe is not only a Medical Examiner with amazing computer skills, he used to be Kane’s handler. So, with a few other deputies, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small Black Rock Falls town, which seems to have more murders than a small town should.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) 14 year old Lindy Rosen is kidnapped from her bed in the middle of the night. Jenna and the team send all their resources out to find the missing girl, but hear from the kidnapper that they are on a time deadline, and the clock is ticking. Time ran out, and now there is a murderer out there.
It soon becomes evident that the killer is playing with them. In particular, he is playing with Jenna.
More will die before they can get a handle on him.
My Opinions: I don’t think you can jump into the middle of this series. There is too much information in previous books that would be missed. That being said, it’s a good series, so it is worth your reading time. The books are all action-packed, and although I have never liked the relationship between Alton and Kane, I can put up with it because the plots are really good. I am not a romance reader, and the two of them seem a little “sappy”….but to each their own. Having the deputy always protecting the sheriff also gets a little annoying. She should be able to stand up for herself, and although the author was making Alton stronger, she seems to be slipping again.
As always, this book was a fast read with an intriguing plot. The characters were interesting, and suspects abound. Actually, there were so many suspects that it was hard keeping track of them.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
a creepy book with a young teenager waking up to whispers in the night and a boogey man at the bottom of her bed...when she calls out for her dad each time and though he looks by the end of the fifth night maybe the search isnt as thoroughly...and maybe in the morning he will regret it as she is gone
with no clues or any signs the detectives are stumped and then the next girl goes missing and again the rumour is she heard whispers in the night...
a complex story for the detectives to find out the killer and with hints of old cases were they looking at a serial killer in their midst....
i found the main characters very easy to get to know being as how this is my first book and in reality its the 6th one in the series but it didnt put me off...maybe the lead female detective could do with a bit more backbone as i did find her slightly annoying come on she is the sheriff but apart from that gonna keep my eye out for more of this authors work
Black Rock Falls may be a small mountain town but it has seen quite a bit of notoriety since Sheriff Jenna Alton moved there after leaving the DEA. This time, someone seems to be targeting young high school girls. First, 14-year-old Lindy Rosen goes missing from her bedroom in the middle of the night. Police attend the scene but there are no signs of a break-in and the house has a top of the line security system that wasn't triggered. Then it becomes obvious to Jenna Alton and her team (which includes Deputy Kane) that a devious killer has no plans to stop. But who is the real target?
This is police procedural mixed with low key romance and a sort of locked door mystery. Although it does feature a sadistic killer, it's more tell rather than show. I guessed the identity of the Shadow Man early and I finished just to get confirmation that I was right. The investigation requires that the detectives wade through a lot of interviews and do a lot of running around and generally being in mortal danger -- which brings me to my main gripe. Why the heck does Alton need so much protecting and coddling while she pretends to be a tough girl and doesn't eat, sleep or generally take care of herself. Kane has to do it. I don't buy it. She seems weak every time she won't go get her injuries attended to at the hospital or acts all moody -- and does she ever eat anything besides bagels? I don't know why she's the Sheriff when it seems like all these other deputies around know more about serial killers and tracking and police work than she does. She is fake tough and always ends up in a sort of victim role as a target. I'm tired of Kane with the goo goo eyes as he so admires Jenna and wants to be her main squeeze but nobody is doing much about that. Let it go already, it seems a forced token romance anyway.
I've read all the books to date in this series and I don't know that the small town can realistically have another crazy murderer on the loose. I really enjoyed the first couple of books featuring Kane and Alton as they adjusted to life in Black Falls and worked those cases together.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the e-book ARC to read and review.
Where do I start? How much I love Alton and Kane? How this is one intense journey into darkness? That no matter what there are shocks galore? Why is Black Rock Falls attracting all the crazies?!
I can not believe I am on the 6th book in this series and it has not failed me ever! Each book is so intense, and I do fill sorry for the residents of Black Rock Falls. As much as I want to go there nothing ever good comes out of it!! If you have not read the previous five books, STOP ✋🏼 what you are doing and please for the love of god go and read them.
So what is happening now? This time we are a few short weeks after the events from the last book and a girl has been kidnapped. Alton receives a video giving her six hours to find the missing girl or else……
From the opening chapters, you know this will be a difficult read, made even harder when you know its young teenage girls being targeted. Makes me want to give my mini-me an extra squish
I was on tenterhooks throughout Whispers in the dark as I could not figure out how these girls were being taken…I mean I know how but how were they being manipulated. And then to live their somewhat final moments in some cases broke my heart. The fear that the characters felt was palpable and always there is the race against time element, more so in this case because they have been given a time frame to solve the case literally!
How Ms Hood can write so much darkness just blows me away. She just does it so well and then she flips it over with the wealth of love that the team have for each other. How they are a unit and none of it is cheesy. She tries to balance the good vs the bad. Plus I was so happy to see developments with Alton and Kane. What developments…well read it yourself!
Whispers in the dark is a breakneck speed of a journey and overall it is such an addictive and thrilling series that I am so glad I discovered. I do not think I will ever get bored of this series (please don’t stop writing them!) as each book both Alton and Kane are finding their ground a bit more. Fighting back against their past more and learning to deal with the present. I do hope soon, somehow the past meets the present.
Some books you don’t know what you are going to be in for. You can be over the moon by them or you can feel a bit let down. Some books you are certain you are going to give them the full 5 stars even before you have finished the first page.
Let me tell you this first : a book in this series is worth its weight in gold!
This sheriff and her team are wonderful. The way they work together and interact is great, but they also have fantastic personalities, each and everyone of them.
The author is sooooo good. Every story has a huge amount of creepiness and the suspense is perfect.
When a new book by her is being announced, I can hardly wait to devour it and I have to force myself to follow my schedule and not sneak this one in first. But time and time again, my patience will be rewarded. The author never lets me down.
This is a story to curl up with on the sofa and shut the world out. It’s another gem created to spoil her readers. 5 stars.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Whisper in the Night, the sixth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane of Black Rock Falls, Montana.
When teenager Lindy Rosen disappears from her bedroom one night Jenna and the team swing into action with a full scale search and rescue mission. Jenna quickly realises this will not be a standard investigation when the kidnapper contacts her with a deadline and if she hasn’t found Lindy he will kill her. Unfortunately it soon becomes apparent that he is on a spree as Lindy is only his first victim.
I thoroughly enjoyed Whisper in the Night which is an exciting, action packed and tension filled roller coaster of a read and a welcome return to form. I wasn’t so keen on the previous novel, Where Angels Fear, as I thought it was too easy to guess but this is much better with a broad suspect pool, any of whom could be the perpetrator, and a very unpredictable plot line where the twists and shocks just keep coming. It is highly entertaining and had me turning the pages at a fast clip to see what was coming next.
Throughout the series I have moaned that the set up of three highly skilled former Federal Agents being relocated under the Witness Protection scheme to the same small, rural town which just seems to be the serial killer capital of America with no explanation is highly unlikely so in this one Ms Hood offers a small explanation in passing. Interesting but probably not the full story so I’ll just have to read the next one in the hope of a fuller, more credible explanation. Obviously my search for the truth will be a great hardship but I’ll persevere. Seriously, I’m already looking forward to their next outing.
I like the characters Ms Hood has created. Jenna Alton is a kick ass Sheriff, brave, smart and caring - I don’t think I could put my body through as much she does and keep going. David Kane is no slouch either in the superhero stakes. Equally brave, smart and caring he has further skills in combat, risk assessment and psychological profiling. They are complemented by Shane Wolfe, medical examiner and all round technical genius.
Whisper in the Night is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.
If you'd just picked this up and read it out of the blue you would probably give it a higher rating. But I have read the previous five books and I can tell you that there is a pattern here and its all getting a bit samey. Its like the same story, done over with different details. Young girls/women get abducted and held somewhere, high stakes drama trying to find them, Jenna puts herself in harms way to try and save them, Kane et al come riding to the rescue if Jenna hasn't already nabbed the bad guys single-handedly... and so on and so forth.
Whenever I see a new Kane and Alton book out, I find it incredibly difficult to contain the excitement that bubbles. D. K. Hood is a masterful storyteller and knows how to keep her audience thrilled and coming back for more! Whisper in the Night is the sixth part of Detectives Kane and Alton series and its a series I've come to absolutely love and look forward to. Riveting, menacing and incredibly thrilling, this book is a wonderful addition to the series!
Fifteen-year-old Lindy Rosen is troubled by recurring nightmares, where she keeps seeing a man in her bedroom watching her sleep. After finding no substance in her claim, her parents put it down to her overactive imagination. But when Lindy is found missing the next day, with signs of a struggle in her bedroom, her parents know that something bad had happened to Lindy. Withing hours of involving the Sherrif's department receives a video of Lindy bound and gagged with a challenge thrown at Detective Jenna to find Lindy before the time runs out. Jenna’s team work around the clock to try to find Lindy before the deadline, but time runs out, and Jenna receives a devastating message. The killer has made good on his promise. He’s playing a dangerous game. And no one knows what his next move will be. Soon another of Lindy's classmate Amanda goes missing with another challenge thrown at Jenna. Will she be able to save Amanda in time? Why is the kidnapper-killer sending her messages?
The plot of this story is excellent. All Kane and Alton storylines are so dark and menacing, you literally feel that tingle in your spine. The setting, the atmosphere, the mystery, the case - everything is such a thrill to read! y only grouch is while I really like Jenna, she comes across as a really weak detective. Most of the times, she's seen piggybacking on Kane's decisions. I find her to be a tad bit unoriginal and not really the brightest detective. Having worked as an agent in the past, I assumed she would have had the skills and confidence to be a good detective and an able Sherrif. But in most of the chapters, it's she asking Kane what to do, how would he solve the case - basically she brings little to the table and its mostly Kane and Wolfe doing all the heavy-lifting (physically, mentally and intellectually). She's good at managing her team, delegating tasks and is brave but when faced with a challenge, she comes across as a novice with no experience always asking Kane and Wolfe for advice. I think I could do with a more confident and thinking-on-her-feet Jenna. I love all the other characters in the series - D. K. Hood also builds a very good suspect pool, to keep you guessing till the very end. I think the series could do more with a few more secondary characters. The sheriff's department is extremely underwhelmed with just Webber, Kane, Wolfe, Rowley, Walters and Maggie. They could use some help without having to call in Blackwater detectives every time there is a mad man running around in Black Rock Falls. I like the idea of Kane and Alton getting involved, and the chemistry between them is great! In the last book, there was talk about Kane remembering the bombing in his past being the work of an insider and I was hoping that that sub-plot would be addressed, but I didn't see anything of that sort mentioned. Despite all this, the story leads you to high-tension, nail-biting moments that are signature D. K. Hood. Looking forward to the next one already!!
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture & D. K. Hood for an arc!
This is Book 6 in this series. I will only visit Black Rock Falls in this Author's books! So many twists, turns and suspects as Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane track down the kidnapper of teenage girls who also has Jenna in his sights. I barely ate or slept while reading this book. I love the characters and this Author's imagination is scary good. Please hurry with Book 7. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.
I can't get enough of this series and whizzed through yet another blinding instalment!
Detectives Jenna Alton and David Kane of Black Rock Falls (Montana) have another murder to solve. This time someone is kidnapping teenage girls and openly taunting the detectives by contacting Jenna directly and stating the clock is ticking as the girls will be killed if they don't find them in time. It's a fast-paced story that kept me turning the pages eager for more.
There was a large cast of suspects, all naturally with the means but not necessarily motive, and it kept me guessing to the wire which is always a bonus.
I love the chemistry between Alton and Kane, a relationship is getting closer and closer to fruition and I am a sucker for some romance on the sideline. I also enjoy seeing a female lead with a male sidekick which isn't always the norm.
Bring on the next instalment, it'll be another thriller I'm sure!
My many thanks to Bookouture via NetGalley for providing me with this advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
I love my trips to Black Rock Falls. I always know I’m in for a dark and twisted case with the team and Whisper In The Night is no different! I felt there was a serious pace to this book. The killer’s MO escalating with each kill, this culprit is one sick individual! There are some serious mind games at play with our lovely sheriff and the killer is loving toying with Jenna. The team really have to pull together in the investigation – I love the way the team work together like a well oiled machine, each with their own expertise which interlink with the rest of the team’s skills. They are the dream team of Montana!! I devoured this whilst away with the family, my attention transported from North Yorkshire to Montana unable to escape. My eyes could not leave my kindle for long as I sped through this latest investigation. I was desperate to find out who the killer was!! D K Hood has yet again pulled off another brilliant addition to the Kane and Alton series. This series just keeps getting better!
4.5. This one didn't hold my attention as much as the other books during the first half. However, the second half of the story had me glued to the pages. I did guess who the unsub probaby was early on, maybe that's why.
This is a nerve jangling tension filled thriller that keeps you guessing right up to the last second. I think I may have been holding my breath from start to finish.
I am looking forward to Kane and Alton's next adventure.
Another fantastic book in this great series. I love all the characters in these books as they all fit together so well, despite coming from such diverse backgrounds. Kane and Jenna have their hands full this time with a killer who wants to play a game. He’s sending messages to Jenna but not really playing fair. Teenage girls are going missing from their homes at night, and despite several suspects, the team can’t find enough evidence to prove which one of them is the killer. The girls are being killed fairly quickly after being taken so Kane and Jenna aren’t getting the time to save them. This coupled with the fact the killer is setting traps for them - they’re really up against it. This is a fast paced crime thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. I love this series and look forward to seeing what’s in store next time for Kane and Jenna. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
This is the sixth book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series. I felt like the characters in this were developed to a higher level. The author is comfortable with them and their world. But I felt Jenna Alton as the sheriff was not believable. Why is she the “sheriff” in this and Kane the “deputy”? Kane seemed much more competent. Even Wolfe was outstanding and could have deserved the title. Jenna felt weak. And in her position, weak is not good.
I have not read any of the other books in this series but I am intrigued and I want to know more about these two detectives. Were they always so close? How did Jenna attain this position over Kane?
This story is basically about girls being kidnapped and then tormenting Jenna and forcing her to find them before he kills them. But truth be told, this killer doesn’t play fair. He nearly blows up both Kane and Alton before the investigation can even get started. The the killings begin to change with death three from a cool indifference to a seething rage. What changed isn’t clear but Alton knows she must bring her A Game to come out on top.
Pretty good police procedural. The first two killings seemed a bit repetitive but then the third killing started to make it all more interesting for the investigation. Easy to follow leads and quite capable secondary characters. Really liked Kane and Wolfe the best.
The last 20% of the book really ramps up the tension and excitement. Action adventure at its best. This book doesn’t peter out like some do. It sustains the suspense all the way to the end.
I would definitely recommend this. Easy to get into even in book six. But starting from the beginning might make all the back story a whole lot clearer.
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
Thanks again to #NetGalley and the publisher (and, especially D. K. Hood) for the opportunity to read "Whisper In The Night" in return for a fair and honest review.
Whisper In The Night is the 6th book in the series featuring Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Kane - but it really should 'feature' her entire support system (Shane Wolfe, Deputies Webber and Walters, Maggie, et al) as they all have crucial roles to play in every case.
This one hits close to home: young girls are being abducted from their homes - homes that are so well-protected by security that it should be impossible. Lindy swears that there has been someone in her bedroom for a number of nights, but her parents never find any evidence; then she's gone and no one can figure out how.
Thus begins a cat-and-mouse game between the perpetrator and Sheriff Alton - his ultimate prey.
Two more girls go missing and then are found dead; like Lindy, booby trapped. Each time, Jenna is contacted by text and with videos attached that up the ante.
Many suspects are brought in, interviewed, premises and cars searched... the whole nine yards; but no clues are found that point to any one of them. They are released for lack of evidence, but one or more has openly threatened Jenna.
When a fourth girl is grabbed, they go all-out, and Jenna is set up as bait to flush out a killer who claims to have murdered over twenty others. Will they catch him or will the Shadow Man elude even Alton and Kane?
This one had me from beginning to end. Recommended, but please read the other five in the series, too.
Whisper in the Night is book six in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D. K. Hood. Deputy Kane and Sheriff Alton caught a case of a child abducted from her own home and then became a race to find her after Sheriff Alton received a video from the kidnapper. However, all their hard work does not pay off, a young girl dies, and another school friend disappears. At first, Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane did not know why these girls were a target or how unsub target them. Until Sheriff Alton's team realised that girls were not the target but a way to get to the sheriff. The readers of Whisper in the Night will continue following Deputy Kane and Sheriff Alton's investigation to discover what happens.
Whisper in the Night is another fantastic addition to this excellent series. Every book I read of the Detectives Kane and Alton series immerses me in the characters and the stories, and I fall more in love with the series. I love D. K. Hood's portrayal of the characters and their interaction with each other. Whisper in the Night is well-written and researched by D. K. Hood. I like D. K. Hood's description of the settings, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
The readers of Whisper in the Night will learn about the importance of listening to children's fear. The readers of Whisper in the Night will know the importance of DNA in law enforcement investigations.
This is #6 in the Kane and Alton series by DK Hood, but can easily be read as a stand-alone.
In Black Rock Falls, young Lindy has nightmares and she sees a man in her room, the Grim Reaper. Her father reassures her it’s just a dream, but by morning she has disappeared…..
Sheriff Jenna Alton puts the search protocol in place, but she receives a text message and a video, telling her they have 6 hours to find Lindy or she will die….
They do their very best, calling in everyone to help search, including Atohi a Native American to help with tracking…..but they are too late and find her body and a booby trap….
Then another girl goes missing……..the Shadow Man has a plan and Jenna is the ultimate prize….
I love the relationship between Kane and Alton, it’s gradually growing and they clearly have a lot of respect for each other. Both are completely driven in their determination to catch the Shadow Man…..and prevent anymore deaths…..and Duke is a darling character….
This is a stunning thriller, with enough creepy suspects to keep you guessing right to the nerve wracking end…
Thank you to Bookouture for the opportunity to participate in this blog tour and for the promotional materials and a free copy of the ebook. This is my honest, unbiased review.
First of all thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this advanced copy of a fantastic addition to the Kane and Alton series. I have enjoyed every single one of these books and this latest is no exception. The pages just keep turning in this story set in the marvellous setting of Black Rock Falls. It follows the team as they hunt for the killer of teenage girls who also has Jenna in his sights. The pace never drops and the story is full of twists and turns and to me it is probably the darkest of the series so far (this is just my opinion though). D K Hood has a way of describing things in such detail that you feel as if you are breathing in that pine scented air and that you are working side by side with the team in their hunt for the suspect. This is another roller coaster of a ride, so strap yourself in and be prepared to be hurtled along at 100mph through the pages. I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this book or the series.
Yet another stunning read from DK Hood! This book was amazing I really enjoyed it, I feel this series gets better with every book. Who would want to live in Black Rock Falls? It’s a Mecca for serial killers, but luckily Jenna and her team are around to solve the most hideous of crimes. Full of tension, darkness and danger this book was a real page turner that I found hard to put down. It was non stop action from start to finish so it kept me engaged right the way through the book. This book is an easy 5 stars it was really good and don’t hesitate to recommend it.
D.K. Hood never disappoints and this new installment is a brilliant addition to an already awesome series.
Like all previous books the plot and characters are engaging and spot on. The pace is perfect with an abundance of twists and turns and multiple suspects so it is difficult to guess the culprit until the big reveal.
I highly recommend this book and the entire thrillers to fellow thriller fans, and already looking forward to the next one.
Thanks Netgalley, Bookouture, and author D.K. Hood for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
There are more suspects in this book than you can shake a stick at! When Lindy Rosen is certain there has been a man in her room at night her father checks each time but never finds anyone. When she disappears without trace it looks at first as if she is just another runaway but that misconception doesn't last long.
Sheriff Jenna Alton and her team in Black Rock Falls have got used to hunting the more serious criminals their county has to offer. This time however, the clock is ticking in more ways than one and despite the links between the victims the killer still remains elusive.
Running on coffee fumes and very little sleep Jenna and partner Dave Kane use all the tools at their disposal as well as skills gained through years of law enforcement but never feel they are close to being one step ahead of their perp.
This is a story which gradually increases the tension until you just hope something is going to fall Jenna and Kane's way and, although there were, as mentioned, a variety of possible antagonists, I had no idea whodunnit until they were finally unmasked in a very satisfying denouement. The characters were well written and, in their sixth outing, well rounded and interacted convincingly.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who has read the previous books or is a thriller buff; this won't disappoint.
