A kidnapping... The attack of an Ice Age cat... One seriously large Paleo Indian man... An immigrant boy abused by two bullies... A series of dreams...
All of these and more come together when Mark and Barry Jamison return to Ice Age Wisconsin. This time they are on a journey with friends to help friends. And this time, it’s more than an adventure, it’s an Ice Age rescue!
Fox picks up his Ice Age time travel adventure for young people with a dual story that takes place in present times and thousands of years ago in the same location with an imagined ideal of life during the glacial period. This story is Barry’s, a sixth grader with a ton of energy. When a new kid from Honduras, Javier, comes to school, Barry rescues him from older bullies. In the past, a young boy with his family is attacked and a sister kidnapped while the brother watches helplessly.
Barry and his buddies learn about the plight of South and Central Americans who are bullied so badly they are no longer safe in their birth country. Although Javier is bullied in Wisconsin, he has friends to stick up for him.
When Javier and Kylie, another of Barry’s friends at school, as well as Barry all have worrisome dreams accompanied by strange blue light on the same night, Barry and Mark realize it’s time to share the secret of their time-traveling. Something is wrong back in the time of the Ice Age, and it’s up to the kids to put the clues together and figure out how to make things right.
Told in multiple viewpoints from humans and creatures in both past and present episodes, Ice Age Journey 2 is a well-reasoned look at potential lifestyle choices, blended families, and our environment. Fox cleverly shows how friends can help each other across culture and time as a portal through time opens once again on time long past. I enjoyed the author’s use of the natural geological formations in south central Wisconsin at parks I like to visit as well.
Recommended for middle graders who read well and enjoy a fun adventure with spears, giants, thinking mastodons and saber tooth tigers, family time, and good friends.
Loved it! The cast of characters was varied and by the end of the book I’d fallen in love with each one of them! The Journey was filled with adventure and danger, which were exciting and drew me back to the story over and over. My favorite part of the book, however, was how this band of misfits from different times fit together and were all just like me in my quest to love and be loved. I’m giving of this book to my 13 year old nephew for his birthday and am eager to hear what he says. It’s a really great adventure story! Enjoy! p.s. Don’t tell the kids about the great message.
Thank you to the author for sending me the sequel to Journeys: An Ice Age Adventure. It was a joy to be back with Barry & I loved his new friend Javier.
I thought the author did a great job tackling the issues of bullying and racism in a way that middle schoolers could relate to.
This would make a great read aloud and I think you could read it without reading the first.
A followup to the first novel, Barry and Mark are ready for a new journey, and this time, they’re bringing friends. The four of them travel back in time to help their friends from the first book to rescue a friend who is hurt and a kidnapped little girl. Even though there are language barriers and monsters and an enemy afoot, these four friends persevere until the end.
As a reader, I was really rooting for the kids. Each character came with his or her own strengths and weaknesses, which ultimately helped to bring together a great adventure group. The author tells the story through multiple perspectives. Because the author stuck with a single perspective for a longer period of time, it wasn’t as difficult to follow. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters better through their interactions; however, I wish more time had been spent on the actual rescue of the two characters. I felt it ended rather quickly. Overall, it was a good story and one which delves into the people of the past, making me wonder what it would be like if I could go back in time.
If you haven't read the first Journeys book, stop now, order it and read it first! It continues the story of two charming but typical young brothers who just happen to time-travel back in time to the Ice Age. Their return to the Ice Age to reconnect with friends made during the first visit is a wonderful way to imagine a time long ago. I purchased the set for my grandchildren and they very much enjoyed the stories. We are all looking forward to the next adventure!
This book does a magnificent job of juggling a whole host of characters from the beginning to the end, giving each a purpose, motivation, and role in the story. Journeys 2 is another chance to experience Mark and Barry's adventures as this time they are joined by some new friends, with new challenges ahead of them. It is a satisfying read, and much recommended for all ages.
Another delightful book from Tim Fox! This book would be a good read for a young reader looking for an adventure book while at the same time a great read-aloud book for a parent to share with their child.
I found the book to be a fun fanciful adventure story about a group of young friends while at the same time the book contains many wonderful life lessons for readers of all ages. Tim shares with us the importance of friendship; kindness to others; not giving up in difficult situations; the sense of joy; and unconditional acceptance of those who are different from ourselves.
Tim skillfully addresses some difficult life choices that some of the characters must make in the story with tenderness and empathy.
The fact that Mr. Fox uses actual Wisconsin natural landmarks in the story makes the reading all the more enjoyable. The fact that readers can actually visit Ragged Rock in Mill Bluff State Park, and other locations mentioned in the story, opens up all kinds of opportunities for parents and their young readers to make Mark & Barry’s adventure really come to life!
Tackling the issues of bullying and racism are difficult to do, but Tim does in Journeys 2. Believable characters and their actions pull you right into the story and it's not surprising that Barry comes to the aid of someone who is being bullied because of the color of his skin. The story's initial confrontation does come to a resolution by the end of the book. And it helps to bring an awareness to these issues that many of us have seen, heard, and felt.
I enjoyed Journeys 2! The trip back to the Ice Age and the events the kids experienced was not as intense or as violent as Journeys, and I think that helps to make this story a perfect read aloud by parents and/or teachers. You can read Journeys 2 without having read the first Journeys story - but if you're like me, I prefer to read stories in order as it helps me know more of the character's background and earlier events. As a retired teacher, I would have loved to have had Mark, Barry, Javier, and Kylie in my classroom, and I probably did!
This book was exciting and full of demonstrations of good qualities like friendship, teamwork, acceptance and mercy for those different from most( racially, or with disabilities), or other differences. Even those who seem like bad guys can be redeemed. The book is family friendly, it's exciting but not nightmare material. It has joyful outcomes, has girls and boys doing heroic things, and is mostly set in a very interesting time, the Ice Age. The book makes the ice age more enticing, calling us to research that more. Also the glaciated parts of Wisconsin, the state park at Camp Douglas and a few others are important to the story. Those are good research topics for kids or others, and possible easy trips to investigate. Loved the Ice Age language. I really enjoyed this book and will read it again. My grandchildren will enjoy it too. All three books by author Tim Fox are very good reads!
Journeys 2; An Ice Age Rescue is a wonderful book by gifted author and storyteller Tim Fox. Brothers Mark and Barry along with their friends journey back to the Ice Age on an adventure filled rescue mission. Once there, they are reunited with friends from that time period and join forces in their task of search and rescue. The book never loses momentum and keeps the reader engaged. It is a great read filled with historical nuggets and celebrates the gifts of friendship and inclusion. It contains humor, moments of suspense and some life lessons along the way. For me, the story ended with a refreshing unexpected twist which I won't give away. It is thoughtfully and brilliantly written - a must read.
Thank you Tim for another captivating adventure. Tim excels at delving into the animal psyche. In this story, he gives the same care and same thought in developing the native characters. While we are all different, dealt different hands and coming from different directions, all human kind and all animal kind strive for acceptance and love.
After an intense opening scene, the story unfolds at a pace sure to keep the reader enthralled. All the while allowing for description and information. This can be a difficult proposition, but Tim handles it masterfully. The adventure culminates in, at least for me, a surprise ending which I enjoyed thoroughly. A little social commentary which could be applied in this crazy world.
I enjoyed learning the history of Paleo Indians and the mastodon. The detail in description drew me into the story as if I had been there. I appreciate the acceptance of Javier and inclusion of a girl. It would be an excellent read aloud book. At the end of the chapter I was eager to read the next chapter It took me back to my being read to and not wanting the teacher to stop. The only point that I would make is that there are some conversations where kids wouldn't have spoken that way or used particular words I really enjoyed reading this book
I thoroughly enjoyed Tim Fox's new book Journeys: An Ice Age Rescue. Full of engaging characters, both from JOURNEYS AN ICE AGE ADVENTURE as well as some new friends, the story carried me away into the world of Paleo Indians, mastodons, and Ice Age Wisconsin. Themes of friendship, perseverance in adversity, and acceptance of differences are woven through this delightful adventure story. I highly recommend it.
A very creative tale that simultaneously touches upon ancient human history and addresses important modern themes, specifically racism. Mr. Fox does a wonderful job with descriptions of both the landscape and the people. The only con is the rather simplistic dialogue, but as this book is geared towards children, the dialogue is probably appropriate.
I would certainly recommend this to be taught in schools and recommended for children anywhere.
Journeys 2 An Ice Age Rescue is an unlikely story of two brothers who, after sharing a dream with two friends, embark on an adventure back in time to the Ice Age to rescue a kidnapped child and reunite with a friend from an earlier journey. Their exploits take them to a land of Paleo Indians, including one giant Indian, ice age animals and intrigue. The author weaves a story of bullying, empathy, caring and you can even learn a few Paleo words. It was a fun read and I highly recommend it.
Just read Tim Fox new book Journeys 2 ; An Ice Age Rescue. It was an exciting, fun read. The interaction between each of the characters was insightful and showed compassion and understanding. I enjoy the detail Tim uses in his books. It makes you feel like you are there with the kids. It really sparks the imagination.
Like the first book in the series, this book has good research, giving interesting information about Mill Bluff State Park. I thought the first book was good, but this one was even better.
This is a really good book and very engaging for young readers my two kids have read the books before this and now this one and they enjoyed them very much.
A gentle read. Have walked the areas in the book, so could picture them in my mind. Enjoyed the interactions and the positive message. Good read for youngsters.
This book does a great job of bring historical and modern life into a compelling story. Great book to stimulate conversations with youth regarding historical and current cultural challenges.
Another exciting and well written adventure by Tim Fox. Full of heart and characters to care about, this is a great book to add to your list, especially if you're in the Midwest!
