It would have been a challenge to bring forth all the dimension of this historical figure in such torrid times in few pages. However, Hourly History does it well. The enigmatic character of James 1 comes through quite eloquently.
It was certainly a fast read but I caught a couple of errors even though I haven't read much about him before. One was claiming that Queen Elizabeth was angry when the Earl of Essex, her favorite, went to Ireland with an army. She wasn't upset about that; what angered her was his returning to England when he'd been expressly ordered not to abandon his army, then barging in on her before she was dressed for the day (which landed him in the Tower of London), and finally when he organized a rebellion against her (which resulted in his head getting detached from the rest of him) Secondly, kings could not be named as a ward to a minor (page 93) - but minors could be named as wards to a king (or to others) Sloppy mistake there. There may be other mistakes but I don't know enough about the king or his times very well, as yet to see them. But I'm working on learning about it.
What a tragic life. The man who would become James I was taken from his mother and raised by Protestants. Actually, James' mother, Mary, Queen of Scots had a miserable existence too. Both lives speak to the difficult lives people lived in response to the overbearing control of religion at that time.
James was a real enigma; he seems to have been a homosexual with a powerful intellect. He could debate the Bible and religion for hours. Probably the most valuable thing he did was oversee the rewriting of the Bible; it is still used today.
James wasn't a particularly good ruler for Scotland or England. The Kirk of Scotland and the Protestants of England tried to rule things instead of James. What a miserable time for everyone.
A good read about the man who commissioned 54 others to translate the Bible: I also learned about other interesting topics involving him that I was unaware of. Some interesting rumors involving King James' sexuality were indicated, but I didn't read of any conclusions. Perhaps just rumors?
This book actually made me sooooo angry. The amount of false information and opinions given as fact is astounding. If you actually know a bit of the history in this era, don't read or you'll be angry. If you don't know any of it, don't read as you'll be filled with false fact.
This was an intriguing biography but no real details of the reasons behind the fractions of English power it makes for an interesting read but lack of understanding concerning the fractions and political maneuvering it difficult at times to grasp
I enjoyed the book however there was not much concerning among James greatest achievement. The King James Bible, which was the main reason I chose to read this book.
This book should be MUST READUNG for anyone studying English History. It is a concise thumbnail biography of one of the most important kings of England. Anyone in the UK that doesn't know their history should read this.$ out of 5 stars for King James 1.
Reading this and becoming more aware of all the dysfunction, makes one wonder how the country of England ever survived. Apparently it did so in spite of itself and the many incompetent leaders;
