Why do we need schools when their very mission has become irrelevant? What should the role of schools be in modern society? How can we connect the neuroscience of learning with the way we design schools?
Learning by Design is not just about school architecture. It is a book for everyone who cares about education. It describes how the thoughtful design of learning environments can become the catalyst to redesign education itself in a way that allows it to fulfill its ultimate promise – as the vehicle to build a more fair and just society for all.
I come from a country where school is a typical classroom set-up with the teacher and the blackboard at the front and all desks and pupils facing the teacher. So, coming across a book that urges us to redefine, and restructure not just learning but also how we design schools and encourage learning- is like being ushered into a world that I wish my kids and their kids would be a part of. A better and more encouraging world where they are free to ask questions, explore answers and share insights. This is a must-read for everyone who has an inkling of learning or has an interest in creating and being a part of better learning environments. Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.
Interesting read. Not many in this genre around. More aimed at the KG/elementary/Primary stage (KS1-KS2) but has some content this is applicable at a more generic level. The section by Elmore is engaging as one would expect.
Creative and inspirational material to use in the implementation of new learning areas for school, office and public services such as libraries and communitive centers.
