The kingdom of Arcadia has never seen war. But now, with construction of a coastal city secretly underway, the nation is torn. Murders abound as an anonymous group of opposition rises, threatening the kingdom itself. As the Arcadian Wars begin, heroes will form, lives will be lost, and the last living wizard in Arcadia will fight to stop one of the Staffs of Power from falling into enemy hands.
To be honest, this is the debut novel by a good friend of mine, so it would be easy to be biased, however, I shall attempt to limit that bias. Nonetheless, I did thoroughly enjoy Fallen. Hence 4 stars. But I will get to that. Let me first say a bit about the missing 5th star.
Writing a book is exciting. Publishing even more so. It is easy to rush to the end when it is in sight. This book would do well to receive some additional editing to mend various typos and simple mistakes. Though, as I write this, already progress is being made in this direction. So updates in the future shall amend most simple mistakes.
I also took one star from my review because a few moments where the flow faltered. That may be because of personal taste, but it is worth mentioning. But it was not a serious amount of deviation to seriously affect the overall quality of the book.
Now, to the 4 stars I raise my toast.
Fantasy is not what I usually get to read from Caleb, so I was pleasantly surprised when his debut novel dove into my favorite genre. He has done well. He avoided many of the pet peeves I have about fantasy (like how armor works or doesn't work). Caleb's world building is strong. Not too much and not too little. His characters are lovable, bringing me joys and sorrows alike. His plot seems simple at times, but gives hints that it is deeper and more complex than initially meets the eye, drawing the reader in deeper and deeper. Obviously, being titled book 1 means there will be a book 2, but Caleb has handled the first step of the transition well. I am very much excited to see where the story goes, for it can go a great many directions. Caleb also handles well keeping his fantasy world realistic. Characters experience quite normal emotions and prejudices, face realistic obstacles, and live in a very real feeling fantasy world. Even the magic feels real, and I look forward to learning more about it in the following book or books.
This book was very good! It was a good and easy read. It was easy to follow. This was a good fantasy book to read. Good job Caleb! You're a great writer! And just-as-great brother-in-law!!! ;) ;) :) Congratulations on your first published book! I will be sure to read your others!!!
