The alien warrior bought me. But he doesn't want a slave. He wants me as his mate.
The brutal scars covering Fynd's face are nothing compared to the wounds that have festered in his heart. After the bitter, public rejection by his intended mate a long time ago, he doubts any female will wish to become his...so he purchases a small human female named Lucy from a slave market. She'll bear him a few children and he'll provide for her in return, but he will not expect her to harbor any amount of affection for him. How could she? He's a monster.
He wishes she wasn't so sweet and beautiful. He also wishes his heart didn't fill with warmth in her presence. She'll likely never return his affections, but he cannot let her go. Ever. A Vaxxlian warrior always mates for life.
Life hasn't been easy for Lucy. She prays her next master will be kind, and she's terrified when the new alien who buys her looks like an angry bull with glowing green eyes. After she attempts escape, she's certain he'll punish her severely. Her old master would have. But the alien warrior named Fynd kisses her instead--a shockingly tender kiss that makes her all tingly inside--and she starts to wonder if perhaps there's more to the unsmiling alien warrior than meets the eye.
There's a gentleness beneath his hardened exterior, but breaking his defenses down won't be easy. As far as alien warriors go, he's as stubborn and proud as they come. Can they both find healing in one another's arms, or will a new threat tear them apart forever?
Sue Mercury writes sci-fi romance. She lives in Maryland with her husband and children, where she hopes one day she'll turn on the television to find a breaking news report about sentient alien beings contacting Earth. She also writes romance of the much kinkier variety under the name Sue Lyndon.

This was NOT what all these 4* & up reviews said it was. It was too simple for me. The writing. The language.. The characters were not deep at all IMO. The romance was barely Luke warm.
The concept was decent, which was why I gave it 2 stars. But sadly it just did not deliver.
3.5 🌟🌟🌟 – Sweet and fairly undemanding read, with a nice pair of damaged protagonists you rooted for right from the start. Fairly basic prose and the short page length didn't give room for much plot and character development. A nice quick read, especially for those sci-fi challenges
Disclaimer - I only read this book and the rest of the series to fulfil a challenge as the kidnapped by Aliens trope isn't really a favourite of mine and I don't read too many in the genre, so I'm not particularly disposed to rate books from this sub-genre high.
This is the fourth instalment from the Vaxxlian Mates series by Sue Mercury and is my favourite book from the series. This novella developed a slightly more nuanced set of protagonists, which lifted it above the other books in the series. That said, at 110 pages there was still a lot more room to develop the characters and build more realised scenarios to drive their relationship forward.
I enjoyed the portrayal of Fynd (the male Alien protagonist) as being scarred as much mentally as physically and how hard it was for him to open up to Lucy (ex-slave and his human mate). The balance of Lucy's mental scars from her years as slavery made the miscommunication between them very believable and I felt of all the relationships in the series this one would have been successful as a full blown novel given more time to develop the characters and their courtship.
The writing style is still very pedestrian and I was able to finish the book in just over an hour. If you're looking for a sweet, undemanding alien romance that you probably are unlikely to remember that long after you read it, but will meet a challenge roll and engage you for an hour, then this book and the others in the series are probably a good bet.
Fynd was a Vaxxlian with a scarred face who was rejected and humiliated in public by his first arranged mate. He decides he will buy a slave and make her his mate. He is a giant of a man and with his face scars, he is a fearsome sight. Lucy has been a slave since her spaceship was attacked by slavers. Fynd buys Lucy and tries very hard to make her trust him as she was treated badly for the 5 years of slavery. I loved how patient and thoughtful Fynd was and how very brave Lucy was when confronted by the big, muscled alien with the facial scars. This was a delight to read and there are some not so nice secondary characters but in the end, we do get a HEA.
Lucy is a human slave being sold by a cruel alien master when she's bought by Fynd, a brutish-looking Vaxxlian who needs a mate to bear him children. Maimed in battle, rejected by a female of his own kind, he bears physical and emotional scars. He intends to be kind to her--but has no intention of letting her go. She's fearful at first, but comes to love her alien brute. This is a quick, light, fun Insta-love romance.
This was a quick and easy read with a couple of interesting characters. Fynd and Lucy come together when he purchases her from a slave auction. Not expecting love, he's surprised at his feelings for her. Lucy just hopes that her new master is nicer to her than her last one was. Not really a lot of drama but sometimes that it was I like to read. This is a great story to read when you have a couple of hours.
This is such a gorgeously sweet yet sexy read. Lucy was spunky and great fun, whilst Fynd, despite being such a damaged hero, was really wonderful. No wonder Lucy couldn't resist him. This is a nicely written and very enjoyable sci-fi romance.
I would have liked to see more of them forming a connection, it was a little too rushed for my taste. However that's very much a personal preference and was entirely down to this being more of a novella length book. The writing, pacing and editing are all good and together with two wonderful characters and an interesting plot this is an enjoyable read.
Dare to hope... Fynd, a Vaxxlian Warrior buys Lucy at a slave market. He’s looking for a human mate To treasure and care for. She’s frightened at first; he’s big and scary. They are both damaged by their past, hoping for a new future...together.
This was a great quick read and a tale I was very much looking forward to. Two scarred individuals, each with their own horrors, find another and, following a few hiccups, fall in love. A wonderful read.
This is an OK sci-fi alien romance, but it is just a bit too short to have enough character development. I needed more backstory on both Fynd and Lucy.
I also thought it was a bit unlikely that Lucy would have fallen for Fynd as quickly as she did. She might have been grateful that he wasn't going to be a cruel master, like her previous slave master -- but I think it would have taken her much longer to trust him enough to fall for him. So the romance was pretty unbelievable to me. I also don't think she would have forgiven him as quickly at one point either, though I won't give spoilers on what he did.
One thing that really bothers me about all the books in this series, though, is the idea that the Vaxxlians have that it is OK to take a woman against her will. Some of the books even describe Vaxxlian men arriving home with their "mates" kicking and screaming. That doesn't sound like a mate to me -- more like a slave. It doesn't matter how good the woman is treated. If she is there against her will, she is a slave.
If you are looking for a really quick sci-fi alien romance, with some steamy scenes -- and don't mind a lack of character development, and talk of women being taken as mates without their consent, this is an OK choice.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Fynda carries scars inside and out, they have festered deep within his very being Fynd had become accepting of the scars that mar his once perfect face and yet in his own heart and mind the ones that hurt the most are those on the inside, the ones that are secreted away from anyone’s eyes. I voluntarily received and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.
Tears! Yes, tears are running down my cheeks, as I read this heart warming, stirring and encouraging, story. This is the fourth book in the series - Vaxxlian Mates and each story is impressive and fantastic. I LOVED Fynd, a Vaxxlian with a scarred face who was rejected and humiliated in public by his first arranged mate. He was filled with regrets, disappointments, face scars and is a fearsome sight. He decides he will buy a slave and make her his mate. She can’t reject him and he wouldn’t be hurt again. Oh, you can feel his pain and his anger, at himself for buying a slave but feeling he has no choice. He buys Lucy who has been a slave since the spaceship, she was traveling in, was attacked by slavers. Fynd is patient, thoughtful and concerned for Lucy and with great concern, he attempts to help her to trust him. He realizes that she was treated very badly for the past five years while in slavery and he wants to help her feel safe and protected. He doubts, she will be able to love him, much less look at his face without horror. Sue Mercury always gives her characters a challenge. Lucy is a brave, human especially when confronted by this BIG, muscled Alien with facial scars. Can she love Fynd? Can she trust again? The story explores learning how to trust and cope with our insecurities, as shown with Fynd and Lucy. Thank you so much for another amazing story, Sue Mercury, Sue Lyndon!
Fynd had given up on finding a mate. After being rejected so publicly for his scars by his fiancee, he didn't want to take the chance. So he decides to purchase a human female and mate with her and hope that they can be friendly. Lucy prays for a nice master as she huddles in the cage with no clothes. When the huge alien frees her from her prison, she hopes that he is truly nice and not waiting to beat her if she messes up. Can two lonely, hurt people find the other half of themselves in a slavers tent?
This was my first book by Sue Mercury and I was enchanted! I love a wounded hero and Fynd is exactly that. He is a big softie but is torn between his fear of rejection and his attraction to Lucy. It causes Lucy to be apprehensive but she sees him as attractive right from the start, which I love! I simply adored the whole set up of the Vaxxlian warriors needing human female mates to repopulate New Vaxx and the new beginning it brings for Fynd and Lucy. I couldn't put it down and consumed it in one sitting. I cannot wait to go back and read the first three of this series as I am sure they are equally enjoyable. 5 stars for Alien Brute!
Some spoilers: Fynd, another Vaxxlian warrior in Sue Mercury's series, is tasked, as all the male warriors have also been directed, to find a human female to mate with. He hears about the slave Lucy, whom he arranges to buy. Lucy is hopeful that he will be kinder than her former master and she is understandably frightened to have been purchased by the larger than human sized, battle scarred Fynd. But she discovers that Fynd does not want her as a slave, but as his mate. And she soon learns that Fynd, as a Vaxxlian, has been raised to treat women with respect and gentleness, and to keep them safe at all costs. They grow to know one another and she is able to make contact with her sisters, and even sees that Fynd and his fellow warriors are more than willing to help save her sisters when they are in danger. But will Lucy ever be able to accept the scarred face Fynd as her mate, and will it even matter if he cannot save himself and her sisters when he sets off to do so?

This is a great addition to the short stories about the Vaxxlian . These strong, caring, devoted alien men are searching for humans to mate with in order to keep their species alive. Even though the stories are short they are filled with great characters and strong emotions. Fynd's face is scarred because of a fighting his past. He has learned that no woman will look at him without thinking he is a monster. When he hears about a human slave being sold, he goes to the planet to purchase her. He thinks that hopefully she will be grateful for being free and will agree to be his mate, even if only as friends. Lucy has been a slave for five years. When a huge man purchases her, she thinks that he will be angry and punish her like her other masters did. However, he seems kind and caring. She looks past his scars to see the real person inside. Can he help her find the sisters she lost when they were enslaved too?
Scarred Vaxxlian Warrior Fynd buys slave Lucy as a compatible female to be his mate. Vaxxlian Warrior Fynd had been rejected years before by the woman his father had arranged for him to mate had refused him due to his new battle scars so now after the war has wiped out the Vaxxlian females and the planet itself all warriors are expected to find mate and have children. Human females have been found to be compatible and Fynd hears of one coming up in a slave auction on another planet so he sets out to buy her to be his mate thinking it is the only way to acquire one. Lucy sees the large scarred male and fears he will be violent like her her last master but then seeing she is naked and cold he gives her his jacket. A Space romance to relax and enjoy.

Fynd is the next brother that is in search of a human mate. He finds Lucy with a slaver named Klazsum. He is selling her on behave of Thesslon, her last master. Lucy wants to be free. She needs to search for her two sisters Amelia and Kelly. They have to be alive. It isn’t how Fynd looks that scares her but his size and her past with other masters that have hurt her. You have to feel for both of them. They both suffered a great deal. Fynd having had a chance at a mate named Shellett was treated unkindly by her. He cared that rejection with him. And Lucy being a slave for 5 yrs and searching for her sisters. Being beaten by her slaver before Fynd saved her. It’s sad and heartbreaking at times but worth it. Now we need to find a mate for one more brother.
Fynd is my favorite of the 5 brothers, so far. I love a big alpha that is confident in his abilities but insecure due to his outward appearance. I feel it is what's on the inside that counts the most and Fynd is definitely made of the right stuff. After rescuing Lucy, he sets out to prove to her that he can be a good mate and hopes that someday she will at least tolerate him. Lucy has been a slave for 5 years and has been treated horribly by her previous masters. This story is about gaining trust and with insecurities on both sides, it is not instant. Overall, I enjoy these quick sci-fi reads but don't expect major developments or complicated plots - there just isn't room for them. Just grab it and relax with an entertaining read.
A fantastic short story. Lucy is a slave that has been put up for auction by her master. She has been abused by him for years and is fearful of the new master that is to come. She hopes he's not as bad or worse than the master she has now. She is surprised and scared of the scarred alien that buys her. Fynd buys Lucy to be his mate and not his slave. He doesn't believe she will ever love him but will maybe accept him for her mate and give him children. Lucy is confused by Fynds behavior when he offers her his coat to cover herself. She does attempt to escape from Fynd and when that fails, she is terrified of what he will do to her. What will happen with Lucy and Fynd? Must read to find out.

This was a great story. I didn't want it to end. I love reading by this author and love this series.

This was a fantastic read with fear of the unknown that Lucy has to face, but the fear is something that has been going on for five years since she was kidnapped and sold as a slave at the age of sixteen.
Lucy savour comes in the form of a big strong Vaxxlian warrior who will buy her to be his mate. Fynd knows that no woman will want him due to the scars on his face, his only option is to buy a human slave.
This was such a wonderful touching story that your heart will break for them both, but you will root for them in the end.

Book four in the Vaxxlian Mates series is well written and a book that once I started I was not putting it down until I had finished. Lucy a slave is sold to Fynd but he does not want her as a slave he wants he as his Mate. Fynd has a lot of scares that he believes makes it hard for him to find a Mate without buying one. His fiancee told him in public that because of his scars he was not worth of being her mate. He has been subconscious about his looks since then. Fynd once Lucy is in his life finds he will do anything for her. I recommend this book. I received a copy of this book through KU and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Life has beaten Lucy down so many times she’s almost afraid to dream of someone good and kind coming into her life. It doesn’t help that Fynd is furious, with himself and others, when Lucy first sees him, and with scars across his faces Fynd fears any woman in her right mind would view him as a monster.
Both Lucy and Fynd are characters who, in different ways, need to get out of their own heads. Seeing things from someone else’s perspective, getting a reality check, and seeing what they are truly capable of is eye opening and uplifting, and a reminder that the voice in our heads can be wrong.
Fynd is a Vaxxlian warrior whose planet was destroyed and he needs a human female to mate and have children with to help rebuild his new planet! Lucy was abducted and forced into slavery and is now being sold by her cruel master. Fynd buys Lucy to become his mate since he knows no female would willingly want him because he is so very scarred! I really loved watching each of them see the others soul and being able to heal and truly love each other!

Truly heart warming tale of an alien who carry’s his scars as a shield after being rejected years ago and a young human girl trapped in an alien world of slavery. Kynd buys Lucy from a slave trader looking for a human mate believing he is a monster because of his scars that will never know love. Lucy is a human who has never given up hope of finding her sisters and freedom. The two work though all of their issues towards the possibility of a future. Great read, loved Kynds gentleness despite his size and fierceness!
This is such a gorgeously sweet yet sexy read. Lucy was spunky and great fun, whilst Fynd, despite being such a damaged hero, was really wonderful. No wonder Lucy couldn’t resist him. This is a nicely written and very enjoyable sci-fi romance. This was a great quick read and a tale I was very much looking forward to. We have Vaxxlians who are trying to find the mates that they need, but their own species is mostly dead, and Fynd who never thought that he would find his own mate, until he found Lucy.
I've really enjoyed this series and watching all the Vaxxlians get their HEA. I love how Fynd was a beautiful and kind man which no one could see because they couldn't get past his scarring. But Lucy, she was able to see inside him and see what was going on inside him and how he was so good. I think they might be my favorite couple.
Lucy was captured and sold into slavery. Her first two masters were very harsh. She was back at the slavers tent again. Meanwhile, Fynd was looking for a human bride to repopulate his new planet. He heard of the slavers tent and bought Lucy. She was very scared. Fynd was very nice but she was leary of his actions. He proved himself to her and even helped her find her sisters. Something happens and Fynd has to go to rescue them. Will be come back? Loved the story and ending.
