In order to defeat Alessandra, though, Lilah must hone her growing abilities and learn to control them. But when she discovers the unsettling truth behind the woman’s hunt, Lilah embarks down a spiraling and alluring path of darkness. Will Lilah not only lose herself but everything she holds dear or will her new and unlikely allies keep her on the right path?

Stealing this review space to add a note or two about the book...

Whew. My first published book, what a feat of hardwork and perseverance! Thank you so much to all those who've shown an interest in Lilah's story. I always wanted to read a character just like her, but never found her in any book, so I wrote her myself!

A Sign of Great Things to Come!

Rachael Krotec has somehow made it look easy to expand and infuse new life into a genre many feel overused. Premonition, the first book of The Anima Trilogy, throws readers into a twisted tale of fantastical betrayal and loyalty, hope and fear, treachery and forgiveness. But first and foremost, it critiques the idea of destiny: what is the true meaning of any prophecy?

Now back to that comment about genre. Premonition begins with its main character, Lilah, attending a magic school. I know what you’re thinking—oh great, another Harry Potter clone—yet in fact, Krotec blends Lilah’s life as a magic student seamlessly into a world of wonder, intrigue, and unknown unknowns.

Unfortunately, Krotec doesn’t establish the setting as effectively as she could have. By the end of the tale, I’m left with a few questions that would have made it easier for me to comprehend the monumental events of Lilah’s life as they unfolded. For instance, I’m still unsure who “The Order” is, what the governmental relationships are between the Nox and the Lux. Or, what’s up with this mysterious land across the ocean? I would have appreciated a map to help ground the story.

Though I will emphasize, my interest in the setting illustrates the power of the plot crafted by Krotec. She’s made me want to know more about her world, which is a hard task for any author.

I encourage everyone who enjoys stories like Harry Potter to check out Premonition, but similarly anyone who enjoys the destiny-filled plots of Star Wars will similarly appreciate the conflict woven into the pages of this book. The stakes for each character rise with every turn as Krotec reveals yet another unexpected connection.

While on its own, Premonition tells a good story, will emphasize that you will finish it wanting more, and expecting answers to questions you didn’t know you were going to ask. This is a blessing and a curse. Krotec has incentivized readers to wait for her second book, but hopefully it doesn’t leave readers dissatisfied.

Writing: 6/10. Unfortunately, the writing itself was the weakest part of Premonition. And it’s not due to errors; every so often, the tale significantly breaks POV, injecting a few too many info-dumps in parts of the story that could have done without such detail.

Characters: 7/10. This story is rich with many unique and interesting characters, each with their own special set of abilities. However, I do wish there weren’t as many POV characters. Sometimes, it got confusing and difficult to know whose eyes I was following.

Setting: 7/10. As emphasized above, the setting felt unique, but I didn’t feel like I received enough information to grasp the “place,” though there were a few locales in particular that stand out in my mind, such as Waterstone Academy.

Plot: 9/10. Krotec throws you from page to page, injecting conflict after conflict, but it never feels overwhelming. Every fight makes sense, and characters, especially Lilah, experience the full weight of their actions, something that often does not happen in these fantastical, violent, magic-wielding stories.

Overall: 7.25/10. Receiving four stars, I urge everyone to consider Krotec for one of their next fantasy reads. The book deserves every star!

Strong start, I’ll give her that. I was confused at first because I wasn’t sure where this was heading. It started off like a horror movie or at least that’s how I pictured it in my head. I was expecting an urban fantasy story, something slow and comfortable.

I was wrong. The story was much bigger and it made an impact. The characters were edgy and powerful (maybe a lot?). The fact that I was expecting something else was probably why I was completely thrown off, without warning and I loved it!

There is so much going on in the story. And you should know that I’m a sucker for magic. You sprinkle in some magic in the story and you have me. You pour the entire bucket of magic powder and I’m drowning in the story like I did here.

Another point—world building is the base for any fantasy story. If you decide to focus only on the apex, you’re bound to collapse. Premonition’s world building was probably one of the best and I applaud to the author for it. No one is going to believe this is a debut novel, I’m doubting it myself.

I’ve cut some points because I read the blurb before I started and I knew what was going to happen for half the book. I was skimming to reach that point even though the descriptions were good. There wasn’t much driving me when I had the end result in my hand. Don’t let that stop you, things go in unexpected directions after that.

If you’re confused still, let me make it clear. You have to got to pick it up. Look at the cover! It’s beautiful, just like the story in it.

Thanks Rachael for the ARC. It was totally worthwhile and I apologise for the delay. I hope you forgive me for that.

I’m signing off to go process the end. *sprints out of sight*

The first thing I want to say about this book has to do with the characters. The story was told from multiple different perspectives, something I always love. We got to see inside the heads of characters on both sides of the “fight,” another thing I always enjoy. It’s just so interesting to see the way the villain’s mind works.

Plus, I liked learning about the different characters’ backstories. Krotec did an excellent job with those reveals; she made each one the perfect balance of being both surprising and sensical. Additionally, there were no “pointless” backstories; each revelation added something to the plot and furthered the overall story.

Moving on from the characters, though, and onto the plot, I definitely enjoyed the general storyline of the book. Obviously, I liked the premise of Awakening; I wouldn’t have picked it up if I didn’t! But the way Krotec wove this story and all the different threads of the plot into being was amazing. The overall flow of the book and the pacing of different events were great, and it had the right sense of momentum. Though, I must say that you need to be paying attention when reading this one. It’s fast-paced and it’s a complicated story, so it can be potentially confusing at times. The first chapter definitely confused me, but things did quickly get explained!

Finally, I want to comment on the world-building in this book. Krotec doesn’t dedicate too much page space to this, but the details she does give do plenty to paint the setting in stunning clarity. She also doesn’t spend an inordinate amount of time describing aspects of this world that are irrelevant to the plot. And as much as I love insanely detailed world-building, I can definitely appreciate that.

All things considered, I really enjoyed reading Awakening. From the great characters to the exciting plot, there was plenty to appreciate about this book. So, I highly recommend check it out and getting yourself a copy.

Premonition takes us through Lilah's journey of finding herself and learning who she is, even if it's not what she wants. I ultimately enjoyed this book and the characters and thought the storytelling was captivating. Some parts of the story felt familiar, giving off vibes of Harry Potter and the Hunger Games, but a lot of story elements were unique and made it very interesting. I have to say, I had a hard time following in some spots, especially the beginning. The author wants to keep you guessing, keep you reading, and teases so much in so many places throughout the book that I eventually gave up trying to fully understand. The plot is well thought out and complex, I just feel the reader is too often kept in the dark and could have been given a little bit more explanation. I expected more answers at the end of the book, but I guess I'll find those in book two.

The book picks up after the first couple of chapters and I was enraptured in this world of Lux and Nox and Lilah's journey. I absolutely enjoyed reading and at the end, I wanted more. Rachael Krotec is an incredibly talented writer and definitely knows how to craft a story.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Poor Worldbuilding Results in Reader Frustration

I found this book to be a difficult read. When an author creates a complex world, there are two dangers that he or she must avoid to keep from annoying or frustrating the reader. The author needs to give enough information about the world so that readers can follow along, even if they have to pick up clues about the world. Authors need to avoid giving you either too much information in what feels like a data dump or too little information so that you cannot make sense of what happens. Unfortunately, this book suffered from the latter. The reader is thrown right into the world in a rather creepy scene where one of the warrior maiden students is being punished by being branded. We next see various scenes of people who seem disconnected from each other.

Frankly, the book was just too confusing. I had no story skeleton or broader sense of the world to hang the seemingly disparate scenes on. I actually have to go back to the book description to try to figure out what the book was about, and I was quite surprised at what I read.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Rachael is a fellow writer I know through the writerssupportingwriters IG hashtag and I feel I should return the favor to check out and review her books. I was joking about the "can't put this book down" term but ended up finishing reading this book in one go :-D

Things I like:

The book has a strong opening scene that eases you into the character and world and continues with a very cinematic story-telling style, switching from one character perspective to another.

A reasonable amount of violence kept you turning page, it's like following a trail of blood and you kept thinking "ok I gotta know where this is going".

Serial without a cliffhanger ending.

I like the lead characters romance dynamic. :-D

Things I don't like:

I'm not a fan of 'Hunger game + Academic + training center world' type kind of book. This has magic and lots of fighting, strong female leads, and violence but still isn't my type of thing. It just feels like having to go back to school for me and I have enough schooling already. This is kind of a "it's not you it's me" kinda problem tho.

Would like more world-building

A coming of age tale with enough dagger-filled adventure, betrayal and magical trickery’

Premonition is @rachaelkrotecwrites debut novel follow the journey of 17 year old Lilah Crowne as she prepares for the annual warrior competition and begins to control her powers. Only things don't go to plan and she find herself on a path to defeat Alessandra Hilt a powerful being.

I really enjoyed this book as it reminded me of Harry Potter and Hunger games two childhood books I adore. The world building in this book was really good and there wasn’t information thrown at you like a lot of YA books do. I was able to follow the storyline quite easily which is something I greatly appreciate Krotec for doing.
It’s in multiple POV and I really liked that as it allowed us as readers to get to know understand the characters better. The characters were all really well developed as well which only made it better.

I would highly recommend this book to fans of YA fantasy (and harry potter) as it’s a book that falls into that category.

Premonition was a cool read written in third person narrative and in the present tense which made it all the more intriguing. I'll leave you with an example and encourage you to give it a chance if you enjoy complex worlds and are a Harry Potter fan:

"How changed are her worries from barely two weeks ago!
Lilah laughs and startles herself. The sound rattles through the
garden and as Lilah hears it again, she can’t help but draw a
comparison to her mother’s own laugh. She blinks, and in the
darkness, Alessandra stands poised, dark hair and dark eyes.
Lilah lets the word mother wander into her forethoughts. She
says it aloud several times, pronouncing every syllable with the
greatest of care. Still, Lilah finds herself pulling back her lips,
as if having tasted a particularly bitter fruit."

So I received a copy of this book a few months back so I am quite late in posting the review, but I’ve had a month long covid, exams and a massive book-burnout/hangover since then👎🏻

Anyway to get back to the book, I absolutely loved this book. Initially I was a bit confused as to what was happening, but it all made sense to me as I read further.
The world building was AMAZING, I could totally imagine it in front of my eyes.
I am a huge sucker for magic- and this book had SO MUCH magic I was in cloud 9
The characters were so powerful and well written and we got to see a peak inside all of their heads (which I just loved reading). The backstories were all so well developed and nothing was pointless.
Overall the book is soooo worth a read- go pick it up or order it right now!!!!

Lilah definitely has been thrown into a new version of her life that is full of betrayal, loyalty and special powers coming to light. I was hooked from the start and just kept reading. I couldn't figure out at first who was good and who was bad. Although not to share any spoilers I think one of the Hilt sisters is bad but the other one was good in a backwards way. This novel was action packed and I could follow along perfectly. Never a dull moment! I recommend picking this up and giving it a try! You may be surprised!
