As if Sean doesn't have enough problems, is seems that the crazies have finally decided to take him on. Whether it's fanatics who think he's the devil incarnate, or just people looking for any excuse to spread carnage, they've decided that Sean and the lycans present a problem that needs to be eliminated. Then there's that leak in Washington, apparently they didn't remove all of the demonic influences from D.C. like they thought they had.

But even with this added complication to the war, Sean's still very happy to be home once again and back in the arms of his loving wives and family. Estrella's also happy to be back on the side of the gateway on which she belongs, not to mention having finally found a husband and a family. Though things may have changed just a little bit since she left.

WARNING: "Trying Times" contains explicit sexuality, nudity, violence, bad language, robbery, murder, demons doing nasty things, spoiled rich kids, self-defense, pro-active self-defense, destruction of public property, unscrupulous and manipulative people, polyamory, explicit sex, group sex, mayhem, more demons, people who aim to misbehave, gratuitous sex and violence, some poor people who deserved better, and a nod to an old singing duo who were quite talented.

I'm new to the Harem / LitRPG thing (If I'd known more about LitRPG when I wrote Shadow, I might have incorporated more elements of that into it).
I have a FT job, so I work on this when I can. Hopefully the next one will be even better.

Shaun is back, but the problems just won't go away. Since the Lycans have been exposed, most people are appreciative of them fighting a war on their behalf and saving them from the demons. Highlight the word MOST in that sentence. There are of course people who resent the lycans and resent the fact that the Lions are calling themselves Gods. Shawn and his group are attacked by a bunch of humans, some for religious reasons, and some just because they don't like lycans. This actually was a pretty emotional story. Two of Shaun's friends were hurt in this book and one of them died. The aftermath of that was pretty powerful, both Shaun's violent response and afterward his emotions he expressed from his loss. There also seems to be more demon possessions trying to mess things up for Shaun.

On a side note, I can't believe how quickly this author is putting out these books. Its seems like he puts out a new book every month or two. That's crazy fast!

Trying Times starts out a little weak with a villain who is less than two dimensional, but it gains strength as the novel progresses and sets up an intriguing problem that will have to be resolved in later books. First, the two dimensional villain…

Stryvant quite correctly figures out that not all the country is going to be happy to discover that lycans are everywhere and that thousands of military men and women are being converted to fight the war with the demons. So Stryvant shows us this by creating a preacher who goads his followers into attacking Sean and his people. The preacher is every bad stereotype of a protestant minister that you’ve ever seen on TV rolled up into one. He’s a bigot that’s been looking for the “right” group to hate. He takes sexual advantage of every pretty female in his congregation, telling them that God wants them to have sex with him. He’s a coward who justifies his cowardice (like his evil deeds) as God’s work. And he turns on his own flock to “save” them from the lycans when his idiocy gets them in trouble.

I’m not opposed in principal to idiot villains, but I think Stryvant missed the boat here. It isn’t hard to imagine that an honest preacher might fear what is happening in the U.S. and blame the lycans (who are quite visible) instead of the demons (who are not so visible). Had the preacher been more honorable in his fanaticism that would have made for a much more dangerous and insidious villain. But hey, it’s Stryvant story and ultimately these are his decisions. I’m just glad that we quickly moved on to other things because the problem with foreign governments, for reasons both strategic and corrupt, starting to move against Sean is well thought out and far more interesting than the cartoonish preacher’s efforts.

The war is going to have to move to Europe where there are plenty of signs that the demons have made inroads with the magic users and now with key government figures, but how exactly Sean and his crew will handle that is beyond me. I very much look forward to seeing how Stryvant handles it.

I also want to credit Stryvant for killing off one of the better supporting cast characters. This was a shocking and painful loss and I thought he dealt with its aftermath well. The cast is big enough to absorb quite a few of these deaths, but it’s never easy for an author to kill off a beloved character. Stryvant deserves praise for his handling of the situation.

As always, I’m looking forward to the next book.

ALL books have had issues but in this one they were prevalent enough to be distracting. Sean is always greeting his wives with "a hug and a kiss" cuz the author can't think of any other words to use. There are more of these repetitive phrases, combine that with the 'every man is a pussy magnet', 'all women want to be bred', 'all hail America, EU stinks'. Some testosterone regulation was missing here and we've done nothing with the info we gathered in the previous book...

A interesting read.

The author has once again delivered a book that entertains and is fun to read. The pacing was good and action was well written. Overall it was good to read.

So far I enjoyed the series but this one made me cringe time and time again. It's not the hammered in sex scenes or the question what an author may have to compensate if he writes stories about a guy who has seven wifes and two mistresses - whom he all but one 'knocked up'. That's part of the genre and it hasn't disturbed the story so much this far that I stopped reading the series.
But now the author decided to put in this stupid stuff with germany and all I could think about it was: Is it too hard to watch some youtube videos about how the german government works - or read that stuff up on wikipedia? Even with demon possession: This whole plot wouldn't work. It just can't.
1. The GDR ceased to exist 30 years ago. The Stasi (Staatssicherheit) was disbanded. There is no way that some mind wiping spy program would have survived for nearly twenty years to produce those girls in their early 20s. Why? Because such a program would involve too many people to not have a bunch of them call the media on it. Especially if named program - that is against so many points in our constitution - should exist for 30 years outside the law!
2. The german parliament wouldn't and couldn't pass a law that bans the lycans. For such thing they would have to change the constitution first and that is nearly impossible and can't be done within days. This is modern germany you are writing about, not the third reich!
3. Furthermore the government wouldn't be able to keep a lid on the incidents - neither would they do that - even with possessions by demons. We are not a bunch of americans who are not interested in the things that happen in the world. Especially if that involves one of our embassies being the target of an terrorist attack with dozens of casualties. We have TV and internet over here too. ;)
Even if I take into account that the heads of government were compromised by demon possessions - their very strange behaviour and breaking of the laws of our constitution would raise so many suspicions and investigations that the literally just can't act in that way if they want to stay in power much longer.
4. Germany / the EU has no interest in harming the US - why would we? We sell a lot of our stuff to you guys. Crippling and harming your state / economy wouldn't make us money - it would cost us immensely. That's what all those rage fits of your orange idiot of a president are about: We are making a lot of money of the US as it is - more than the US does the other way around.

Please don't do that shit again. I know it's fantasy and stuff but if you put it in our world then just make it believable and not just some crap that fits your story. It just breaks the immersion for your international audience.

This is a combination review of the entire 17+ book series as I binged the entire The Valens Legacy over the about a month.

The Positives:
- The writing is really good. Often when I binge an author things like their crutch words become constant irritants that didn't happen here.
- Stryvant doesn't mess around. The plot never really stops or meanders, each story having important events that carry the narrative forward.
- There's two maybe three arcs in this series but each flow one into another smoothly so it all seams like a natural progression.
- All the arcs are entertaining and engaging I always wanted to know what would happen next or figure out the mystery.
- The Main character rides the line of being a Gary Stu never really crosses that line.
- Functional magic system and cohesive world.

The Negatives:
- The pervasive fetish portions. Even during serious portions Stryvant will often break my immersion with sexual talk or fetishes.
- Repetitive sex and romance. It does get better later in the series, but since Stryvant's fetishes don't change over the course of the book neither do these scenes. I started skipping them, but he'd often stick important plot points in the middle of them.
- The women characters tend to be on the bland side and over sexualized.

Over all I enjoyed the series.

Guess who's back, back again?

So Sean is back home, and all he wants is to spend time with his family while he keeps building up his army so that they can defeat the Djevels. But when does Life ever decide to say "Ok, I'll give you a break".

The Lycans have been exposed, and just like the mutants in Marvel, they now have their own little Kill all Lycans Church. Now don't get me wrong, most people are appreciative of what the Lycans are doing, fighting the good fight and all that jazz. But there are always going to be those that dislike those that are different; that and the fact that Lions are the Lycan's gods really chafes their hide.

So we have two different bands of humans attacking Sean and his people. And just like in any terrorist attack they take some losses. Plus we have the Djevels inciting even more conflict behind the scenes.

I will say that I really liked how all the military preparation and all the infighting that this book had taught Sean that war is complicated and messy from all fronts. It isn't just aim, shoot/blow-up, and see who's left standing in the end.

Even so, I feel like this book's total rating is 4.0 stars out of 5.

Time to RUMBLE!

I have purchased every book kindle and audiobook and I have to say I am in love with this series. For me it’s a cross between fantasy and reality. The struggle is real. As a person we tend to forget that in order for us as humans to have come so far many were sacrificed for what was seen as the greater good. People always accuse what they don’t understand as evil because they are to ignorant to admit they just don’t understand. Reading this book made my heart swell. I was sad, happy, warm & tingles and then ready to help kick ass! I love the gang and the ever growing family Shawn has. It gives me faith in the world that we would all be heartless when it counts. The Valen’s Legacy is a great read and I thank audible for putting it in my likes.

Great series just declines

Ok so the fact that I have bought many of these books says I enjoy them. That being said I honestly think the introduction of the demons was a bad idea, at least the way it was handled. The series at about the halfway point really just starts to spiral and run out of control. The first books when the cast was a little more tight and just felt alot more fun. I really had to force myself to read the last few that I got to and really cant see myself continuing. I own multiple copies of the first few and I hope to see more like that from this author cause I really think with a new series or smaller focus they will excell again and I look forward to it

Another very good addition to the series

Jan manages to keep track of all the characters so well, whole keeping the pace of adventure and plot going at just the right pace that it's impressive. I don't know how he cranks out so many books a year, but I sure am grateful for it!

Keep going Jan, I really appreciate your work. And if you talk to MSE, tell him thanks. I'm writing this review after chatting with him and finding out how important these reviews really are to you guys. I used to just leave stars, but I'm trying to support you all in this small way at least. ( beside just buying your books I mean).

Again a great read with great characters

Love this set of books, characters you come to love and when something bad happens to one you feel it. I always check daily for a new book on the series so I can stay up and read it right away. Hell I even bought all of them on Audible so I can listen to them as I drive, again thanks Jan Stryvant for these books I can not wait for the next one.

Another Home Run

I like reading a series of stories that get better and better as the story expands. The MC, Sean, starts as a kid bitten by a Waterloo and now he's backed by the American President and even working with other lycans worldwide. He's been to help and servived bringing home another wife.
This series is just amazing with the possibilities for the future. I'm looking to reading the next installment of this series.

Beginning of the end

Feels like the next book will be the penultimate book regarding the demons, but not the series. Sean et al, continue to work to stem the demon tide when another series of unexpected attacks has devastating consequences. Still disappointing that the children are still not part of the story, even if their names are known. Hope to see more of the other characters in the next book. Still has me wanting more!

Sean is back in town!

After his adventures on the other side of a gate, Sean is back where he belongs.

So, iof course things are going to hell in strange directions, literally in some cases. Facing hate groups, religious fanatics, and secretly hostile governments is going to make his time in the other world seem like a vacation...

The plot thickens

We get to see more reactions to Sean going public with the Lycans. The Story continues to move foward, and the Djevels make some more plays.
There is a nice blend of old characters and new in this volume. I feel that Jan Stryvant has done a great job of balancing the large cast, and I look forward to the next book.

Another great Valens novel

This is one of my favourite book series, and as usual it jumps my KU queue and I read it immediately. It has so much depth and emotion for a harem novel with the number of wives Sean now has. Not the most action packed book in the series, but it is the setup for a European expansion. I just wish the books were longer.

Great book

Another great book in the Valens series. Germany has decided to piss off the Valens family and attack them and killed one of their friends. Then had the gall to ask for help even though Lyman’s are illegal in Germany. You can imagine his answer to that. What action and intrigue.

Quality.

Every one is as good as the first. Looking forward to more. Wouldn't mind if this gave "Bleach" and a few other manga classics a longevity challenge.

Can't believe Amazon is letting that pirate site stand. Hopefully, they won't add insult to injury and bash authors over exclusivity violations. It'd ruin KU for me.

Super exciting!!

If I could rate the book higher I would. Plenty of action and even a little twist. I like qhere this is taking us. Definitely managed to keep me on edge wondering what was going to happen next. Seemed a little short but that's probably because I enjoyed the book so much. Can't wait to see where we go in the next book.

Move over game of thrones

This series has so many twists and turns that it's hard to keep up but while the action is fast and deadly the underlying story line of caring and family is maintained throughout the series. It's a must have of you love action and adventure books with a twist of romance.

The Lion Does Not Sleep Tonight

Sean is busy fighting demons, crazy cults, and corrupt governments. I like the action, humor, love, and loyalty. Will Sean and his Pride be able to overcome the roadblocks thrown up so he can concentrate on the Demon threat? I look forward to the next book.

Another great one!

Good heavens, 14 already! This series is still going strong, which shouldn't surprise me....
When I first started to read this series, I kinda expected it to hit the "same ol, same ol" point about book 5...or maybe 6? But it just keeps getting better.
As for the jerk pirating these books on his skanky website? May karma catch up sooner than later.

Lions and Lycans and Demons, oh my!

I'm having a great time with this series. For all the fun of the story and characters, I appreciate the thought the author has given to the system of magic discovered by the principal character. I also like my reads to have a big story arc as well as strongly developed characters. Nailed it!

Enjoy the series

I have enjoyed the series some books are better than others but to have a series this strong with so many releases is awesome. I usually end up dropping a series after about the fifth or sixth book due to a drop in the writing quality but not here. This author is one of my top three go to for upcoming books.

A different turn

This book kinda took a hard left turn on me that I hadn’t expected. The surprise turn of events was both refreshing to the story line and a little off putting at the same time. But there are some very major, and frankly long overdue, dramatic events that take place in this book that deal the deal and absolutely make it a worthwhile read.

Getting back on it's feet.

The disconnect from the last few books has been, while not resolved, improved. The story has a more defined direction and the character interaction has improved. Now if the problem of long standing characters being stale is solved, this could be back to five stars.
