SLATED: Blurred Borders Series Book 1

Rate this book
Sloane Slate was diagnosed as a highly functioning borderline. Twice. She knows exactly what the label means - no lasting relationships. But she craves the kind of unconditional love where nothing feels like it is missing. Determined to find true love, she hides her BPD from everyone.

Sloane secretly hopes all her impulsive decisions will land her a leading man, just like in the movies she loves to watch with her film buff friends. When she meets Connor, a rugby player, their attraction is magnetic. She’s certain he feels their undeniable chemistry. Their sexy role-plays sizzle and they share an intense passion for movies, too. But he never takes her to see one. She can't figure out why he doesn’t call or text for days or why he won’t commit.

Behind her party-girl persona, she cannot stop her inner thoughts from overanalyzing what must be wrong with her-or stop picking her skin. Sloane feels everything intensely and reacts accordingly. Her reckless lifestyle and an unexpected friendship with a drug dealer quickly transform her life from upbeat rom-com to twisted docudrama. When she’s faced with an inevitable life-changing decision, she’s split. If she takes her mask off and reveals her secrets, she risks losing her true love.

But if she keeps them hidden, she'll face dangerous consequences that could follow her forever.

¬Slated is not a typical erotic romance and crosses into the new adult fiction genre. The characters may be dark, complicated, and/or flawed. It is intended for readers 18+ who enjoy no-rules love stories, and complex, but realistic relationships. There is conflict resolution, but the threads of tension carry on in the second book. Book Two will be released in September of 2019.

Author's This is a full-length novel that contains sensitive content dealing with borderline personality disorder and recreational drug use. Due to mature themes and possible triggers, the book is recommended to readers eighteen years of age and older.

Okay first off this is an erotica book which is going to have a lot of sex. However as much as there was sex in this novel there wasn't a lot of what I thought was very important to the core story which is getting to know Sloane and her mental illness. There's not a lot of explanation to her mental illness and I had a little trouble pinpointing it at first. For those who are familiar with BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) her actions will come as no surprise. Although I think that it would have been good for the author to, as I said, go more in-depth on her mental illness and explain it a bit better so that people who are not familiar with it would understand why she does the things that she does. This was something very key that I felt the book lacked.
However the rest of the book is written well and it is an enjoyable read. The characters are well-written and relatable in most cases. The romance and sex scenes were also very well written. Very steamy!
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading a good steamy erotica novel.

Sadly, I could not finish this book.
It comes with a very explicit trigger warning: Slated contains sensitive content dealing with mental illness and recreational drug use. It is recommended for readers eighteen years of age and older. There is conflict resolution, but the threads of tension continue in Book Two.
I have read and reviewed many NA books with warnings like this (some of them being all-time favourites) and I have never had any problem with them what-so-ever. And I think this is because the warning didn't list the trigger that lead me to have to DNF this book. The unhealthy relationship.
I found it extremely uncomfortable to read and frankly I just couldn't read on. Their relationship was built solely on sex and drugs which aren't things that I don't have issues reading, but when it causes such toxic relationships I sadly couldn't read on. I wish I got to learn more about Sloane and BPD from what I did read she didn't have much interest to me as a character and her struggles with mental health seem to just be glossed over in favour of inebriating techniques.
I wish they had added a toxic relationship trigger because I really dislike leaving poor reviews since it's not their fault it triggered me. I would still recommend this book to someone other than myself in the hopes that maybe they would enjoy it more than I did.

This book was pitched to me as "in vein of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, but with full steam." That was weirdly intriguing, so I had to give it a go! I liked the book quite a bit, but I have to say because of that comparison, I was expecting something completely different than what this is, which did the author and her story a disservice.

This is an Own Voices novel, about a protagonist, Sloane, with Borderline Personality Disorder. Because I knew that going in, I expected her diagnosis to be explained at length, which it isn't - although it is prominent to the plot. I don't have much knowledge of this diagnosis, and while I could understand that the character's behavior was driven by her diagnosis at times, I didn't understand exactly how and I think I would have had more compassion for her if I'd understood better. With that being said, I think anyone who has dealt with this diagnosis or similar symptoms will connect with Sloane.

The writing is solid, it's a compelling story and I couldn't put it down. It's a fast paced easy read. There is A LOT of sex, a lot of very steamy, graphic sex. Some of the phrasing is a little cliche - I suspect it's difficult to write erotica without cliche - but for the most part the sex is well written and female empowered.

I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

Wow. I don’t think I’ve read a book like this in a long time. It states that there are triggers and should not be read by anyone under 18. And I’m glad it tells the reader this beforehand because I am sure this book isn’t for everyone.

It explores the state of the human mind at fragile moments that can either make or break you. There’s also drug use and mental illness as part of the triggers. But I think the part that mostly got me was the relationship between the hero and heroine.

It’s unhealthy to say the least but I knew from the blurb that it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. Sex and drugs were the main focus and based solely on this. The toxicity in the relationship felt real to the point of almost DNFing the book. But I just couldn’t cause I had to see what was going to happen.

If you’re like me, the storyline and characters will hook you and drag you in. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t a flawed person. Some of her characteristics I felt could have been fleshed out a little more. But it’s still an interesting read.

I am going to rate it a 3.5. I do believe I will pick up the second book too. I want to thank Netgalley and BooksGoSocial allowing me to read the ARC.

This book deals with heavy themes; drug use, mental health issues, and unhealthy relationships. It is not a book you can read quickly or straight through without giving yourself a break. The author is frank about college life, the availability of drugs, the club scene. and oftentimes Sloane's emotions are raw and over reactionary.

The steamy sex scenes are many, so if erotica is not your thing then pass on this book. However, the physicality of the sex itself is a way in which Sloane is able to feel connected, first with Connor and then in a more healthy sort of relationship with Ryan. The theme of mental illness is front and center in this book, namely Sloane's borderline diagnosis and how that plays out. This book should make you cringe at times but hang with it till the end before you judge it.

Kudos to the author for writing this book.

A heated romance dealing with unusual yet important issues

I was a little skeptical at the very beginning because this book seemed like a basic romance with a lot (nearly too much) sex scenes. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered the whole story because it is quite interesting. It deals with sensitive subjects such as drug use and trafficking or borderline personality disorder which is original in this type of book. I really enjoyed the author's writing which is very smooth and complete. If I have to point out a little flaw however it would be that some dialogues lack depth, sometimes it is too cheesy or obvious. Otherwise I enjoyed it!

Slated – Alexis Sands

I was asked to review this book by the author.

With this being book one in the series, I expected to learn a lot about Sloane and her diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. However, this was largely missing from the story. As someone not knowing what BPD is I thought that a little insight would’ve been useful.

I have to admit that this is really not my sort of book. There a large number of extremely detailed sex scenes. There are a number of heavy themes in this book including:mental health, drug use, addiction and unhealthy relationships.

I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a good erotica story.

I got this book from the author and I thought the book sounded intriguing. This is my first from this author and I was looking looking forward to it. From the start, the book did not get my attention, but I pushed through. I would have liked to have gotten know Sloane and her mental illness more, especially at the beginning. The story was good and easy to follow and the characters were relatable. If you like erotica, this is a good one.

Sands takes you on an unpredictable journey through Sloane’s emotion-driven world. A surprisingly prolific erotic romance that explores the depth of human nature. Sands merges the taboo with realism in a way that parallels Plath and Bret Easton Ellis, but packed with originality.

The Blurred Borders series has Showtime original series written all over it!

Complementary copy given for honest review and opinion.
This book took me to some deep places. I guess I didn’t expect that and so it was surprisingly intense. A good strong read for mature adults.

Too much sex which is ok but that got me bored easily with the lack of core story.

First I want to thank the author for providing me with a code for the audiobook on audible. When the author reached out to me I read the synopsis like I always do and I thought this book sounded like one I would end up enjoying. Unfortunately this book wasn't for me at all.

As mentioned in the synopsis Sloan suffers from BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder). I have heard of this but I personally don't really know anything about it. I went into this thinking it was going to be about Sloan and her mental illness but we barely get anything about the mental illness besides that she has it. Being someone who knows nothing about this mental illness I would have liked the author to have gone more in depth with it. I feel like if the author had gone more in depth I would have had more compassion for Sloan instead of her coming off as a clingy needy girl to me. If you are familiar with BPD I am sure you would understand why she does the things she does.

The first half or more was all about partying, drugs and sex. Literally that's all they did over and over again. I am all for having fun but this was just a no for me. After the first half there was no more partying but there was still a lot of drugs and sex. I don't want to spoil anything but it just seemed to me like Sloan was making one bad decision after another and I was cringing listening to it. I will say the sex was very steamy and graphic which is the only plus side to the story for me but it was also a little cringy at times with how she refers to things.

The last half of the book was about Ryan and Sloan and how in love they are with each other which became very repetitive but the last couple of chapters something happens that makes it pick up a little but I'm not invested in the character enough to want to want to continue the series.

I hate that this book didn't work for me but I think that if you go into it already knowing and understanding BPD that you could potentially enjoy it.
