Stranded far from home, and unable to return, I am in bigger trouble than ever.
I know I say that a lot, but this time it's really true.
Not that there aren’t advantages to my particular predicament. If one must put up with a dangerous degree of magickal potency, one is duty-bound to… put it to use, no? Who knows what could happen?
Certainly nothing insane, irresponsible and potentially life-threatening. As if.
But we'll need every possible advantage in the Hyndorin Mountains. For there, hidden behind layers of secrets, could be the answers we are looking for.
Answers, questions, and dangers — and the kind of disobliging foe who just won’t stop coming back.
Aided by the serene Emellana (still enigmatic), the delicious Baron (still charming), and the animal-loving Miranda (still irascible), can Jay and I find the way to save modern magick?
English both by name and nationality, Charlotte hasn’t permitted emigration to the Netherlands to change her essential Britishness. She writes colourful fantasy novels over copious quantities of tea, and rarely misses an opportunity to apologise for something. Spanning the spectrum from light to dark, her works include the Draykon Series, Modern Magick, The Malykant Mysteries and the Tales of Aylfenhame.
Again a good plot and some pretty cool developments in this volume. There was just the right hint of His Dark Material trilogy, what with the Familiars. Loving it when an author gracefully borrows an idea from another novel. It was completely on point and the ending on this volume was pretty interesting (Unicorns anyone? :D )
This book was so so good! I devoured it in two sittings, but I would have done it in one if I didn't have real-life responsibilities like work and sleep :(
Although, as I've explained in my previous reviews, I have quite enjoyed this series so far, this books literally made me cry! English has built up the relationships within this series so well that, although the other books have definitely influenced my emotions, this installment actually got a physical response. Usually the sign of a good read, I think. English is so artful in creating tension and suspense; and done effectively, too! I'm excited to see what the next installment brings.
I love this series! I like the engaging characters, the crazy imaginative world (all the Britains, the House, a talking book, pup!) and all the threads of the story. Here we have Ves, Jay, Miranda, Alban, and Emellana Rogan looking for the Heart of Hyndorin. Ves is overflowing with magic that she doesn't really know how to use. She's afraid that she can't go back to her home Britain because she may accidently hurt someone. The funny things she does, all the wonderful secondary characters, and a neat twist for Ves towards the end of this installment of the Modern Magick series, keep the fun and excitement going. Charlotte English has crafted an imaginative world with delightful characters and a great story - I can't get enough of it!
So much is happening right now, I don't even know how English manages to fit everything in and still keep a sensible pace (ie doesn't feel super packed or rushed).
I love all the characters English comes up with, even Fenella (who is confirmed to be an awful person ). Though also, Alban - he's definitely on thin ice with me... still. Just kinda wish Ves would stop being fixated on him, but guess the heart wants what the heart wants. Anyway, all the characters feel remarkably well-rounded for such short instalments.
I'm completely sad I've caught up with the series and will now have to wait for the next one.
I love the characters in this book, they're well developed and fun. The descriptions of magical abilities and locations provide excellent world, (or worlds) building. This was one of my favorites in the series, however, in my opinion, this series needs to be read in order. I've been reading it once the Christmas holidays that are more stressful than normal due to Covid related issues, and this was a perfect read to leave the stress behind. Cheers!
Modern Magick started right where #7 left off, but with an urgency to it we haven't seen since the earlier books. The intrigue was tinged with sadness, in a way that the others have not. To say more would be spoiling. Also, The Heart of Hyndorin was extremely funny. The dry wit was back -- possibly more than ever! Altogether enjoyable.
I absolutely adore this series! Would recommend for fans of the Invisible Library Series and The Chronicles of St Mary’s. Cannot wait for the next instalment!
This series continues to be excellent, lively and highly entertaining. Thoroughly recommend to one and all. Also am I the only one that thinks this would make a excellent dnd adventure...
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It closed the loop on the assorted quandaries left open in the previous Wonders of Vale, and did so in unexpected and most satisfying ways.
