Susan Abel has had a passion for writing, second only to her passion for horses, since she was a child growing up in the Detroit area. With writing assignments becoming her favorite projects in school, she completed her first novel at the age of seventeen, a story about a girl and a horse, of course.
Following a twenty-plus-year career as a professional trainer and riding instructor in the mid-West, Rockies and Southeast, Susan returned to school to earn a degree in journalism at the age of forty as a single mom with two girls. Following graduation, she worked several years as a beat reporter and feature writer for various newspapers as well as for a private university group. Once her girls were grown, she returned to her passions: instructing with her own riding school again while writing “Through the Mist.” Ten years later, she finds herself teaching less and writing more each day.
Susan currently lives in the metro Atlanta area on a small farm with her husband of ten years and a menagerie of animals. Committed to her writing, she has attended ten consecutive Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) Conferences to further her writing career. She loves to read, draw, ride and show her horses, travel on adventures with her husband and go on long hikes with their dogs.
Having lived a diverse and well-travelled life, Susan has a broad expanse of life experiences to draw from, enabling her to flesh out characters, describe locations and understand the human condition in such a way her stories come to life in the imaginations of her readers. With “Through the Mist” completed, Susan is working jointly on a sequel, “Into the Fire,” “An American Citizen” and a collection of short stories, "The Roots That Bind Us." She finds it beneficial taking breaks on projects to return to them in a day or two with fresh eyes. Susan is currently pursuing an agent to represent her work. Her progress can be followed on her website and Facebook page.

'Into the Fire' by Susan Abel takes place several years after the first book in the Two Ponies Trilogy; some things have changed, while others haven't at all. Ricky Werden is out of prison and out for revenge - his plot is the catalyst around which the entire story revolves. Soon, all the characters are racing against time and each other in a bid to end Ricky's reign of terror before a growing forest fire consumes them all.

This is a real page-turner. The older characters we have come to love from the first book have returned, some wiser while others less so. The new characters quickly endear themselves as well, slotting into the rhythm of life at Two Ponies. The character development is top-notch (even the villains!) and the equine characters also provide plenty of lovable drama in their own forms. Major, Cisco, and Bonanza in particular really shine in this novel.

I loved the chance to see Katherine competing here - the scattered elements of eventing training and competing are fun, though the central action still revolves around life at the ranch. I liked seeing Jessie return in an enlarged role, and the adventures of Jo and TJ seem to pick up where their respective parents left off.

There is a lot of warmth to this series - the familial nature of Two Ponies and all that encompasses is quite cozy and homy. You definitely feel immersed in life here and, as a result, are quite invested in what happens to the characters.

This felt like quite the worthy successor to the first book, and I very much look forward to seeing what happens in the third!

Susan Abel does it again!

Picking up where 'Into the Mist' leaves off, the story continues with the lives of Katherine, Betsy, Steve, Billy and their remarkable horses. Old rivals return and enemies never forget. Another captivating tale of love, determination and sacrifice. Each page turned kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen next. Descriptions of people, scenes, even the animals are so vivid that I felt I was there. I
can't wait until the sequel is published.
