A new storyline... A new hero... Same deadly universe... A SHOOTER WITHOUT A TARGET. The man who calls himself John Smith once had a reason to He was committed to a crusade he was willing to kill and die for. Trained by one of the best gunmen alive, Smith’s natural instincts with a handgun were honed to almost perfection. But after suffering a devastating loss, Smith has turned his back on everything he once believed in. Now, Smith wanders post-Purge America, crossing paths with other survivors—some good, some bad, and some…unknown—while dealing with the monsters that still lurk in the darkness, forever waiting for unsuspecting prey. Smith doesn’t go out of his way to find trouble, but no one who has gone up against him has done so more than once. One of these days, he might find something to believe in again, but until that time comes, cross John Smith at your own peril. Mist City is a post-apocalyptic Western and is the first in a series of planned storylines starring an old breed of hero made for a new kind of world.
A hero or a coward what is John Smith supposed to be.
I enjoyed the premise of this book, what I did not enjoy was John Smith, either he is brain dead or an idiot. In the write up for this book he supposed to be a elite soldier, but he always makes all these crazy mistakes what kind of soldier is that, how does he not realize that the people in the storage facility are cannibals at least that’s my take on it. And a warehouse tripping all over his feet, leaving his weapons and packs behind, not trying to regain his weapons which are silver which he desperately needs. No soldier versus wait insult would make the mistakes that he has made. After reading this first book of a supposedly new series I’m surprise the titular character is still living. He is no will or Danny, another great team this author messed up. But if he continues to write another book to the series I hope Donna find somebody to train her because he ain’t it. Some of you might like a bumbling hero I do not. Yother thing in the book is he was either a hero or a coward he shows signs of both the author needs to make up his mind what type of character John Smith will be.
So many possibilities in the purge universe. Can't wait for the enevitable twist at the end of the series (again). Sisavath's writing style lends itself well to suspense and desperation. just when you think things could not get any worse for our hero or heroine they inevitably do. and just when you think there is no way out and no rescue coming, the twist in the narrative represents itself in all it's glory. It is also very refreshing to see that the Shakespearean tragedy of a story has not been lost in our age of heroes triumphant.
Looks like another excellent start to a great series....
John Smith was not going anywhere in particular until it all went from zero to 60 in mere minutes. One moment fighting boredom and then ambushed by a stuffed teddy bear and a woman with two deadly kids...From there it only got worse as he escaped only to walk into the midst of a war between opposing sides, neither of which has any vested interests in his staying alive.... Oh, and let's not forget the reappearance of the ghouls complicating life for all involved. Sounds like an interesting day and boredom has long since vanished....
Sam Sisavath is one of my favorite authors for post-apocalyptic fiction. I read this first book in the After The Purge: AKA John Smith series in one sitting and enjoyed it very much. It's a good beginning to what I believe will become another solid spin-off of the original Road To Babylon series. While you could certainly read this book without having read the previous ones, it would be so much more entertaining and enjoyable to have read the complete series beforehand. Still, it's not necessary.
I read all the time. Sometimes several different books at once. When I read Mr. Sisavath's books, the others are normally put down until I'm finished. Mr. Smith is different. He remains an enigma, is he someone we know from the past, or a new character. Is he flawed because of past experience or just not that smart. Either way, he's fast with a gun and he's got a few tricks for getting out of situations when he needs to. I love it. Will Donna/Margo somehow heal his wanderlust, mental "I don't care" attitude and seclusion? Interesting.....
Good action packed story with even better dialog and character personalities. Sam Sisavath really knows how to spin a story that doesn't drag but you get to know the characters well enough to live them...the heroes...or absolutely hate them...the villains. And let's not forget the world he created with the prune wrinkled ghouls always looking for blood.
I have read all up to now,but this one, just a repeat, hiding in stores, attacked by gouls, searching for weapons, wandering about .I could have almost written it myself.Of course left us hanging there,so I have by no means given up on the author.Having kept me enthralled this far.
Excellent start to a spin-off to The Road to Babylon!
The pacing was excellent and there was introductions to be and interesting characters. The main character is John Smith but that's not his real name. He's real good with a handgun and he's apparently a good man wandering the new world of ghouls After The Purge. I'm buying next book now. Enjoy
Sam Sisavath's writing is like consistent rpm redline driving, never touches the brakes. I love the similarities of the lost past characters. Great spin off and I am hoping for more very soon.
Though a little short and thin on action, a rarity in this series, the character development and seamless flow keep you reading and interested. Going to start the next one now! Thank You
Sam really likes his secrets and secrets are fun but get annoying when you don’t let your readers in on your secrets...eventually. Like for real, what was in Buck’s mysterious building ?
Okay the main character comes across as a vagabond but is a likeable character with a bunch of survival skills if you can call being a crack shot a survival skill. As in all these types of books there are a couple of sad bits Read and enjoy
Yes Sam, we want more of John Smith and "Donna". Worthy new characters in the purge universe. Great, quick read that'll leave you wanting more of the story.
I just can’t get enough of Sam Sisavath. He is an amazing author and this book is another example of that. But...I want more. Where does John Smith go next??
Classic non-stop western action story entwined in a post-apocalyptic world. Even if the main character isn't, at first, sympathetic, he strangely gets likeable. Good trilogy.
