While the cover and the name screams b-horror movie or one of those terrible horror novels, it isn't. ตา(ย) ไม่หลับ is well written, full of twist and turns and interesting storytelling technique in every chapter. The first chapter might be a bit boring but if you can get past it, the way each chapter seems to drop some kind of connection and there seems to be something that ties all the stories together. You'll enjoy seeing familiar names mentioning here and there, so expect a lot of going back and forth in the book. Each story in itself is self-contain and can be enjoyed separately, with each one being told with different style and techniques. There's also a bit of diversity, as not all characters are straight. To be honest, it really is a fun ride, until the last chapter, that is.
Unfortunately, the book fails to deliver the epic overarching story all the hints seem to promise. The final twist was disappointing, and the way it frames book piracy is too shallow, especially to me since I'm a free culture advocate as well as having studied history of copyrights law.
Without the final twist and the last chapter, I would have given it 4 stars. The last chapter is such a disaster that the whole overarching story thing feels pretentious.
