How Are You : Understanding the Silent Struggle of Stress, Anxiety, and Depression.
A friend asks, “How Are You?”
You want to say, “I’m fine”, but you know that is untrue. You are in pain, but you don’t know how to express it.
*****
A friend says, “I’m fine”, but you know there is something more beyond those simple words.
You notice something is not right, but you don’t know what to do. You want to understand and help but you don’t know where and how to start.
Stress, Anxiety, and Depression are 3 of the most common mental and emotional challenges that people are struggling with.
No one should be left to face the struggle alone, and no should.
“How Are You”, written by Assistant Psychologist Aiman Amri and Youth Motivator Aiman Azlan, explores the topic of Stress, Anxiety and Depression; from how survivors can cope with them to how friends and family members can understand these human problems better so that they may be compassionate and considerate towards those who struggle in silence.
The reason I bought this book is because I was intrigued by the synopsis. It says,
A friend asks, “How Are You?”
You want to say, “I’m fine”, but you know that is untrue. You are in pain, but you don’t know how to express it. A friend says, “I’m fine”, but you know there is something more beyond those simple words.
You notice something is not right, but you don’t know what to do. You want to understand and help but you don’t know where and how to start.
When I opened and start reading it, I already felt like this book is going to be good and most of the time I can’t wait to know more what’s inside the book. This book is about Understanding Stress, Anxiety and Depression. There are many tips shared by the authors and all are the good tips and of course they can be applied to help someone with mental illness.
Apart from the tips that have been shared, there are some theories and analogies that I honestly just knew about. They really are interesting. The very interesting topic discussed in this book is about the 5 Myths of Depression. For example, depression is the work of Djinn and Satan. And people with depression should be isolated from society. People should learn something from this. How? They are all in the book. You just got to read it.
Mental health issue is a heavy and complicated topic to discuss. However, the way the authors delivered this topic made easy to follow and understand. It felt like I was in the therapy session. It has some sort of connection between me and the authors. Like a student with a lecturer and a patient with a psychiatrist. (Though I’ve never experienced the therapy session before) but I think that's what it feels like.
I’m thankful for the knowledge that have been shared by the authors and just keep on writing and spread the knowledge to people. Thank you for this.
Happy Reading!
This book is an eye opener. I bought this book to understand myself more. It really helps me on how should I care for myself and how to listen to others as well. I really appreciate that this book is out here.
Started off with a strong foreword, but the rest fell short for me. Following both Aimans sharing on social medias, this book doesn’t lived up to their verbal sharing, to be honest. Because I have watched them talking through the details in a such impressive, and informative way. This book offers the basic understanding of the silent struggle of stress, anxiety, and depression. Written in simple english, its the most comprehensive read about the topics if English is not your first language.
A few things you can learned : - Be empathic towards mentally ill people - Mental illness is not because of lack of faith - Being an active listener and not being judgemental is a choice - Try to make daily plans to be in control, and set backs is okay - Scientifically, women can get depressed easily than men, but when men gets it, it can get worst than women
My favourite chapter would be Finding Peace in Pain : Religion & Depression. Battling mental illness and being stigmatised is painful enough, that we don’t need others to measure our faith just because we are suffering from a mental illness.
This book hits close to home. I got it as a present from my dear friend. I think everyone should read this book. It gives you insight on anxiety, stress and depression. Reading this book make me want to shove it under the noses of people who belittled my struggles when I opened up to them (never again).
Highly recommended book for all people out there. A short one but very eye opening. The book mentioned a lot about stigmas and people's perceptions regarding mental health issues, and descriptions and analogies about the mental health disorder so that we could understand them better.
This book giving you an insight of what mental health is really like; an introduction for everyone who has no knowledge in any aspect regarding mental health.
It opens my mind and view about mental health much widely, makes me understand my daily stress even more.
The book gives advices about an issue that everyone of us has probably faced in our daily life, though it does state and advice the readers to always seek help from professional.
Whatever struggle that we are facing relating to our mental health should always be acknowledged and having a mental health problem required as vital treatment as physical health problem does.
This is actually a psychology book, explaining about stress, anxiety and depression which I strongly recommend for people like me especially, who wants to help their loved ones, who are suffering these issues. It's a pretty light book, not super factual but I think the information provided are sufficient to enlighten us about the mental health scene in Malaysia. On top of that, it also discusses about misconceptions and myths regarding mental health issues, which is good to open up the minds of readers.
Simple word untuk fahamkan mengenai stress, anxiety and depression. Aku rasa semua kena baca buku ini.
Aku tak pernah tahu yang sebenarnya kita perlukan stress. Hahahaha. Good point to authors for this book. Sedikit sebanyak kita tahu macam mana nak deal dgn stress, anxiety dan depression (or other mental disorder yang lain).
Part of "How Are You?" synopsis/description that totally sealed the deal for me to buy it was:
"A friend says "I'm fine", but you know there is somethings more beyond those simple words. You notice something is not right, but you do not know what to do. You want to understand and help but you don't know where and how to start."
Because, yes I want to understand and help, and yes I don’t know where and how to start. And this book definitely did a good job on explaining stress, anxiety, and depression in ways that is easy for me to understand. I now have a clearer idea on how I should, could and shouldn’t respond when I encounter with people who suffered with anxiety or depression. And, it also explained about stress, which could be pretty useful to me. All in all, this book was incredible and motivational.
Alhamdulillah, bersyukur sangat dapat baca buku ni.Sebelum ni sekadar tengok je buku ni dekat kedai buku, tak tertarik pun nak beli.Sampailah suatu hari tu tergerak hati nak beli, overall best sangat buku ni. Sangat membantu memperbaiki diri saya.
Buku ni banyak bantu saya kenal diri sendiri Especially yang part kita kehilangan orang tersayang.saya baru je kehilangan ayah bulan 1 tahun ni.Jadi, tanpa saya sedar, kesihatan mental saya terjejas disebabkan hal ni.Bila baca buku ni, saya baru faham kenapa saya jadi macam ni, kenapa saya buat macam ni dan macam-macam lagi perkara yang saya tak faham sebelum ni.
Must have book for those seeking self-help/self-love guide.Ouh ya, buku ni patut dijadikan bacaan orang ramai, sebab content buku ni sangat-sangat bagus untuk meningkatkan kesedaran tentang kesihatan mental. All the best to the authors🤗
Only 4/5⭐ because there are 3 topics in this book: Stress, Anxiety and Depression. But both Stress and Anxiety topic are for mentally healthy people and it has a lot of toxic positivity (for people with mentally affected people) and cliche self-help content topics that you can found on other self-help books.
However, the only points covered that I like in Stress topic is where it explains about how to meet therapist if you need one and how to meet qualified counsellors in the Anxiety topic section.
But no doubt, the Depression topic section is the part in this book that we all really need in our life. Aiman Amri explains it very well from how to recognize if someone has any Depression symptoms to how to help if someone was diagnosed with Depression.
I do know this book may have hopes to be better in future and I really hope that both author will improvised the way they bring out the topics or the way they write about topics in future because it can be seen that it seems that they are multiple type of sentences that are repeated using different words but brings the same meaning that can makes the reader becomes quite boring or not interested to continue to read the book again. I suggest to explain about 1 point not more than twice to prevent from the readers to become bored when reading it. I guess that's all for my review.
Lessons from our Creator came to us in terms of what He let us experienced ourselves, or the experience of others around us. And these few weeks, the very same kind of message repeatedly came to teach me this – take care of yourself, get to know yourself, know what can keep you happy and content...so then you can take care of others.
The first two chapters of 'How Are You?' are easy reads berbanding the last chapter yang lebih terasa seperti limpahan maklumat. Maybe it's meant to be a how-to guide.
Anyhow, worth reading.
For self-care: find social support, open up, find something that you love (than can be done instantly without much effort). To care for others: listen for the purpose of listening (not giving solutions (need to really learnt this)), do not compare (each struggles are unique), accompany them to see professional (let the expert diagnose). . A reminder for us to take care of ourselves, not just physically (ini pun ramai tak jaga), but also mentally, spiritually, socially, and many more aspects of our life. . 'Take care' is not just merely a wish, but also a reminder - please, do take care ❤
This book is such a good eye opener and self enrichment book in order to us, understanding the silent struggle of stress, anxiety and depresssion.
This book giving you an insight of what mental health is really like; an introduction for everyone who has no knowledge in any aspect regarding mental health.

"After the stigma of mental health is defeated, then the AWARENESS can come which will bring the ACCEPTANCE from people and ultimately leads to an ACTION from the government to change the system !"
Thanks to my dear brother, Omar. He gave this book to me as present of 2021. May Allah bless you akhi.
Overall buku ni highlight pasal Stress, Anxiety, Depression.
Kau rasa kau depress? Baca buku ni. Kau ada kawan yang tengah depress? Baca buku ni.
"Tak sempurna kesihatan seseorang tanpa kesihatan mentalnya"
I have a friend who is suffering from depression. Although I am learning about medical stuff, but I still a clueless person when I need to deal with my friend. So I decide to read this book in order to learn more about mental health. This is a good book for anyone who wants to view and understand the mental health issue in another perspective ways. It is a light but practical book which can guides anyone either as person who suffer the illness or as people who lives with the survivors. The author trying to explain all these stuff in layman term so that people can easily understand how mental health works. It just same as physical health, so it is our responsibility to break off the stigma regarding mental illness. I hope there will be much more books that do not discriminate people with mental issue
At first, I was contemplating whether or not to get this book but I definitely made the right choice by purchasing it. I once lived in darkness and as if I was walking through fog. I can’t figure out how to get out. Few searches away helps the fog to thin out a bit and I can see light at the end of the tunnel.
I cried a few times reading this book and I honestly encouraged those who feel like the darkness is overwhelming to read this book. It’s like having a rope to grasp on and at least hold you while you get back your bearings. I read this book slowly so that I could reflect and ponder.
May you find peace.
p/s: Reading this book reminds me of a Korean drama entitled It’s OK Not to be OK.
I read this book for three times. First read, read through everything, understanding it in my mind. Second read, read word by word, sentence by sentence, not to miss anything. Third read, read and make note.
It's a very interesting book that speaks from both perspectives of someone who have mental disorder and those who knows someone with the illness. It's helping both ways.
My favourite part (and as a reminder to myself), be like the tree. Plant yourself well, nurture it briefly, take care of it, one fine day, you will provide fruits and shades to others.
Mental illness is a complicated issue to be talked about. Let's be the person who take good care of our mental health and also let's help the people around us.
"Everyone has their own glass. When someone comes to us to talk about their overflowing water, acknowledge its amount. The way they perceive that droplet might not be the same as us. Do not compare our water with theirs as it is not a competition."
📚: #HowAreYou
Buku tentang memahami pejuang stress, anxiety dan depression ini bukan hanya memberi maklumat namun membawa kita menjadi empati, dan belajar bertolak-ansur. Kadangkala kita kena terima hakikat di sekeliling kita ramai saja nampak OK, hakikatnya mereka sedang senyap-senyap berjuang.
"Be a friend, don't be a counselor."
"Without mental health, there can be no true physical health." - Dr. Brock Chisholm.
From this book i can conclude that mental illness is not like other pain that we can feel it physically.
Mental illness or mental health is about emotion that cannot be detect secara mata kasar macam tu je tapi memerlukan kepada penelitian yang jelas dan proses.
Overall this book help me to help others not as counselor but to be good listener 😊
Overall 3.5 stars. Very insightful as introductory to the topic. This reads more like casual motivational-ish tone which explains the author's career. Some sentences were repetetive and long. I was looking for a more in depth kind of reads with scientific data, facts, findings etc with proper english. But hey maybe it was intentional, to get the younger readers to read and understand the issues.
This is an ok read for me. When i start reading this book the foreword really catch my attention. I found latter that there is a repetition in the way the example is given. The rest of the chapters is very informative to me.
Buku yang bagus! It help me a lot. Alhamdulillah. Bahasa yang mudah faham. Buku ni pasal anxiety, stress dan depression. Bila baca buku ni ia memberi sedikit sebanyak nasihat dan motivasi dalam kita menjaga kesihatan mental🌸✨
"Mental health is as important as physical health, and there is no true health without mental health."

A really great and helpful book for mental care and produce a new perspective to me on how to dealt with things on your mind. Also, gaining some knowledge on how to handle and care for people that have depression by the end of the book. Good read.
