She knows that in a fateful one, her life plummeted into darkness. She was the person babysitting kindergartner, Alyssa Bronson, when the girl was abducted. She was responsible. She lost sight of Lyss’ at the zoo. Haunted by guilt and grief, Mackenzie moves halfway across the country at the urging of her mom. They’re both in need of a fresh start. Mackenzie’s supposed to forget. Move on. But how can she, when the nightmares plague her every step, when the horrific crime replays in her mind like a looping, black-and-white reel? How can she look forward to a colorful future when the mistake she made in her past ended a life and changed hers forever? Enter Joaquin Ramos, the “adrenaline junkie.” Can Bristol Cove’s most sought-after surfer pull Mackenzie out of the depths? Or will she be pushed right back under?

Shannon Smiley weaves a multi-layered YA novel, so rare nowadays. While dealing with the devastating topic of a child abduction and the guilt a young woman experiences for "losing" her charge while babysitting; Smiley ties in a believable romance and family drama. All this adds up to a dynamic story with well-drawn characters who capture your heart.
