Black Shuck Shadows presents a collectable series of micro-collections, intended as a sampler to introduce readers to the best in classic and modern horror. In The Martledge Variations, Unsworth offers three tales featuring paranormal investigator Richard Nakata.
Do we know Richard Nakata? Yes, we do. We have been following him through pain, loss, fear and very little hope for a long time. Through all these, Nakata had formed a theory about ghosts. It appeared very scientific, almost quantum mechanical. So, inevitably he had to test it. Hence, he came to Martledge and planted his ghoats. How did they fare? Did the author succeed in making us run, as he had done when Nakata had gone to investigate those shallow graves? Not exactly. But, I believe that in these stories that wasn't the author's intention. Instead, he wanted to build a stage with utmost care, where our mind can have our own, customised ghosts. Detailed, atmospheric, and haunting. Readers following Nakata should get this one. It’s recommended.
Loved this - three stand-alone ghost stories, each dripping with atmosphere, framed with a bridging narrative and in a beautifully drawn setting. Lovely work.
