The Result of a Failed Abortion is an autobiographical collection of poems by Shaun O. Smith. Dealing with issues from sexual and mental abuse to living with depression and anxiety, Shaun openly discusses the pain that has kept his mind captive most of his life. Freeing himself from these struggles, he hopes to either speak to or connect with others who have similar thoughts and problems. For those who can't relate, he acknowledges the role they play in letting him vent his issues.
These poems are about a very tough and unfair childhood. For example, turn to Salt-less Ketchup, where we find these two quotes: “He tricked me, just by being my father” and “His whips were my fault.” For some relief, turn to the narrative If I Were a Rapper, where we find whimsy like this: “With the money from that song, I’d buy a tiger and replace his teeth with diamonds.” Smith’s power is evident in Homecoming Embrace, where we find this: “Past admissions and through a locked door /I was going to be kept on the fourth floor” For a final strange experience, turn to Blunt Trauma, which begins thus: “The fire ignites /The paper burns /The air pulls the smoke in...” That should give you an idea of what’s on offer in this book. Now for my star count boilerplate. My personal guidelines, when doing any review, are as follows: five stars means, roughly equal to best in genre. Rarely given. Four stars means, extremely good. Three stars means, definitely recommendable. I am a tough reviewer. I try hard to be consistent. Five stars is an easy rating.
