About the author

A past president of the American Comparative Literature Association, David Damrosch has written widely on comparative and world literature from antiquity to the present. His books include The Narrative Covenant: Transformations of Genre in the Growth of Biblical Literature (1987), We Scholars: Changing the Culture of the University (1995), What Is World Literature? (2003), The Buried Book: The Loss and Rediscovery of the Great Epic of Gilgamesh (2007), and How to Read World Literature (2008). He is the founding general editor of the six-volume Longman Anthology of World Literature (2004) and the editor of Teaching World Literature (2009) and co-editor of The Princeton Sourcebook in Comparative Literature (2009), The Routledge Companion to World Literature (2011), and Xin fangxiang: bijiao wenxue yu shijie wenxue duben [New Directions: A Reader of Comparative and World Literature], Peking U. P., 2010. He is presently completing a book entitled Comparing the Literatures: What Every Comparatist Needs to Know, and starting a book on the role of global scripts in the formation of national literatures.

فرض کنید قصد انتخاب و مطالعه‌ی یک رمان را دارید. بر اساس چه معیارهایی این رمان را انتخاب می‌کنید؟ چند دقیقه در کتابفروشی قدم زده و از روی ظاهر و با خواندن چند صفحه در مورد خرید کتاب تصمیم می‌گیرید؟ یا بر اساس توصیه‌‌های دوستان کتابخوان و فرهیختگان و منابع مورد قبولتان کتاب‌ را انتخاب می‌کنید؟

نویسنده راهبردی قیاسی و مثالی برای آموزشِ خوانشِ ادبیات جهان در پیش می‌گیرد؛ هر فصل با یک تِم مشخص (حماسه، شعر، نمایش‌نامه، رمان و ...) موضوعِ مشخصی را بیان می‌کند.

ضعف کتاب، بیانِ مقصودش با استفاده از آثار ادبی و تماماً حول موارد مثال‌زده‌شده است؛ به‌گونه‌ای که به‌سختی می‌توان شیرۀ خالص و سودمندی از کتاب به ذهن داد؛ مثال‌ها کامل و خوب بررسی می‌شوند، اما برای حوزه‌های ناشناخته کمی دشوار می‌نماید که با این کتاب راهبرد نگاهِ درست به آثار ادبی سایر ملل را یافت.

استفادۀ نویسنده از آثار کمتر شناخته‌شده کتاب را خواندنی‌تر کرد؛ علاوه بر اینکه قیاس این موارد ناشناخته تا حدی با آثار مشهورتر و ارائۀ اطلاعاتی مفید دربارۀ آنها موجب می‌شود مخاطبِ کتاب هم به مطالعۀ آثار ترغیب شود، هم شناخت بهتری از «مجموعۀ» ادبیات جهان بیابد که البته هدف کتاب نیز تاحدی همین است.

به گفتۀ خود نویسنده، تلاشش ارائۀ نقشه‌ای برای مخاطب ناآشنا با ادبیات جهان بوده تا او را به مسیر هدفمند و مناسب آثار ادبی پیش ببرد تا بتواند آثاری از تمامی جهان بخواند. خب تاحدی به این هدف رسیده، کمترین کاربردِ کتاب، شناساندن ادبیات ملل مختلف به مخاطب و ارائۀ توضیحات و تفاسیری به آنها بوده تا خواننده بداند چه آثاری برای شروع مطالعۀ ادبیاتِ یک فرهنگ مناسب‌تر هستند.

Aslında yazarın Dünya Edebiyatı Nedir? kitabını okumaktı niyetim ancak baskısı olmadığından bu kitabını aldım.
Odukça teorik bir kitap, daha çok öğrencilerin, teorisyenlerin, akademisyenlerin işine yarayacak türden. Dünya edebiyatını nasıl okunmalı sorusunun yanıtını veren kitap aynı zamanda içinde ilgimi çeken, enteresan ve ilk defa duyduğum bilgileri de barındırıyor. Dünya edebiyatı denildiğinde akla gelenler dışında Çin, Japon ve Hint, İran edebiyatının hatta dünyanın en eski edebi kültürlerinin Sümer ve Mısır piramitlerindeki metinlere kadar uzanan bir yelpazede tutmuş anlatımını David Damrosh.
Kitapta iki bölüm var ki; Zaman Aşırı Okumak- Homeros’u ne antik ayrıntıların içinde boğularak ne de bugünkü dünyanız içinde boğarak okumalıyız diyerek nasıl okunmamız gerektiğini anlatıyor.
Çeviri ile Okumak- burada David Damroch’un üzerinde durduğu mesele, bir çeviri ne kadar yerli ne kadar yabancı olmalı meselesi. Arap ve İran edebiyatında kitabın ana hatlarına sadık kalarak çeviri yapmanın güçlüğüne değinmiş örneğin. Yine aynı bölümde ve kitabın birçok yerinde Orhan Pamuk ve Kara Kitap’ı konu ediyor.
Kültür Aşırı Okumak- Burada ise hiçbir fikrimin olmadığı Afrika edebiyatı ve destanlarından bahsediyor.
Bu üç bölüm en keyif aldıklarımdı.
Başka bir kitabını okur muyum? Evet, okurum.

اگه جزء اون دسته آدمهایی هستین که وقتی یه وسیله الکترونیکی جدید رو میخرید ولی حوصله خوندن دفترچه راهنماش رو ندارید، یا وقتی به یه گالری میرید و آثار رو میبینید ولی حوصله خوندن بیانیه‌های هنرمنداش رو ندارید، پس بیخیال این کتاب شید! مستقیم برید سراغ خود کتابهای ادبی. البته خیلی با اون چیزی که آدم توقع داره فاصله داره ولی یه سری مطالب جالب داره که شاید براتون مفید باشه.

A excellent introduction aimed at university students. I read the second edition (2018), a third longer than the first edition of 2008. This book is a much easier read than Damrosch’s _What is World Literature_ (2003), which focussed more on theorists. Here what matters is writings of all kinds—poems, novels, travel accounts, etc.—from a very wide range of cultures and periods, discussed with just the right amount of detail to whet our interest in reading.

کتاب بسیار خوب، ترجمۀ بسیار بد. گویا انتشارات سمت هم ترجمه‌ای از این کتاب دارد که من بعد از خریدن این ترجمه دیدمش.
کتاب شاید مطلب تازه‌ای نداشته باشد برای کسانی که در زمینۀ ادبیات مطالعۀ نسبتاً خوبی داشته‌اند. ولی برای دیگران، حتا دانشجویان ادبیات فارسی و انگلیسی و غیره حتماً نکات تازه‌ای دارد. آن دستۀ اول هم شاید با خواندن کتاب آنچه را که قبلاً ناخودآگاه در ذهن داشتند حالا خودآگاه و دقیق‌تر بهشان توجه کنند. نویسنده توضیح می‌دهد که حین خواندن ادبیات کشورهای دیگر یا ادبیاتی که از نظر زمانی دور از ماست به چه نکاتی باید توجه کنیم. نویسنده بحثش را با کلی ارجاع جالب به آثار کلاسیک و مدرن کلاسیک پیش می‌برد که بدبختانه تو این ترجمه گاهی بیخود پیچیده و بی‌معنا شده.

My status updates say more than I’m about to, but for the sake of the review let’s just say that 1) I know a lot more than I did before I began this book and I’m looking forward to reading literature through this new, clear lens I’ve acquired.

As a student of literature, this is a must read. It’s easy to follow and very informative. So... Why not 5 stars? David Damrosch is a genius and although he still writes in a clear, straightforward sort of way, there are times he assumes that I (the reader) already “know” some things. So he didn’t spend much time explaining some of the finer details and sometimes he let a topic go before I was ready.... I don’t know if that makes sense, but basically, if this had been a class lecture, I would have raised my hand a couple of times and said, “please, before we move forward, can we talk a bit more about this or that?”

Müthiş bir kitap. Ufkunuzu genişletiyor. Okuma açlığınızı arttırıyor.
Bu adama bayılıyorum. Engin metin bilgisi beni yine yeni okumalara sevk etti. Çok uzun bir okuma listem var artık. Birçoğu Türkçeye çevrilmemiş bile. Zaten ne diyor: Metinle aranızdaki mesafeyi kısaltmak için kendi dilinde okumak harikadır. Ben bu kitapta adı geçen metinlerin bazılarının İngilizcedeki güvenilir çevirileriyle yetinmeye çalışacağım.
Globalleşmenin bir modern çağ terimi olduğunu düşünseniz bile son bir iki yüzyılda başlamadığını idrak edeceğiniz, edebi metinler yoluyla dünyayı daha iyi kavrayıp karşılaştırabileceğiniz, -öğretmenseniz- mutlaka çok ama çok yararlanabileceğiniz bir kitap.

به نظرم میتونه برای کسی که تسلط خوبی به اسطوره ها و بنیان ادبیات جهان داشته باشه بهتر باشه و مفید تر واقع بشه ولی حتی اگر یک جمله هم به ما یاد بده فکر میکنم ارزش داره و من در طی خواندن کتاب قسمت هایی بود بسیار جذااااب و دوست داشتنی و قسمت هایی که می خواستم بخونم تموم بشه ولی برای خود من در قسمت معرفی پیشینه ادبیات و اینکه در جهان چگونه ادبیات و آثار به هم به طریقی مربوطن و انواع ترجمه هایی که وجو دارند و حقیقتا دیدی تازه در مورد ترجمه پیداکردم و در اخر که به معرفی چگونه خواندن ادبیات می پردازد حالا براساس سال یا موضوع و تقریبا یک جمع بندی بود که به نظرم مفید بود.

Good introduction on the larger world of literature, how stories and ideas travel and what we should be aware when we read both things from our traditions, but also others. Damrosch's prose is straightforward and easy to read, and the tone is pitch perfect; knowing and entertaining, yet never condescending. With a clear love for all kinds of literature, stories and traditions, he guides you through its hidden connections. It gave me some food for thought, and I really recommend it; an insightful, easy and educational read - and how often do those three combine into one work?
