Sister Trixie Lavender, reporting for Miss Marple duty! It’s been months since the evil residing inside me has reared his violently helpful head, and things are pretty peachy. My demon sidekick Coop continues to assimilate with the unsuspecting humans, our tattoo shop is busier than ever, we’re more and more involved in our little community of Cobbler Cove…heck, I’d even begun to attend the occasional Sunday sermon (after safely confirming my body wouldn’t burst into flames upon entering Our Lady of Perpetual Grace, of course). Yep, life is pretty good for me and mine. Until the shocking murder of our new friend, Sister Ophelia, during a church-sponsored speed-dating event. Talk about flirting with death—literally. I can’t fathom who’d want to kill a sweet little ol’ nun, but as I’ve learned by now, life in small-town Oregon isn’t always what it seems. When a second corpse is found, the stakes are even higher as Coop and I, along with our good friend Higgs, race to unmask a killer. But when my demon breaks free yet again, the killer’s not the only one in danger of being exposed…

The Smoking Nun by Dakota Cassidy

Paranormal cozy mystery. Book 4 of the Nun of Your Business mysteries. Should really be read in series order since there are character developments from book to book as well as relationships, and an overall ARC that is not yet fully revealed.

This book 4 has Trixie Lavender once again playing amateur sleuth to a murder. Detective Tansy is supportive of Trixie and gang helping to uncover clues and aiding the investigation often by way of technology (pretend?) ineptness. Trixie talks with witnesses, family members, and coworkers for anything they may remember to help solve the puzzle. Trixie does always encourage those people to follow up with the police if they reveal anything hat might be of importance in solving the crime.
Cohorts Coop, Higgs and talking demon dog Jeff are often right in the middle of the investigation.

Spoilers below.****
Trixie is now 4 for 4 and getting better at the game of murder. It will be interesting to see how the emerging demon within Trixie changes the stakes now that Higgs knows of its existence. And the dog! I can’t wait to hear the conversations between Jeff and Higgs.

I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
It was a great book !
The gang is back for another mystery.
It seems that the gang is finding their niche within the community of Cobbler Cove.
This time the victim is another nun.
The gang race to solve the mystery of who murdered sister Ophelia.
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Book 4 and Trixie and the gang are at it again. The good thing about this series is the growth that Coop and Trixie experiences throughout the series. Trixie is now an unofficial LIASON for the police Dept and working with Det. Tansy. Higgs is helping her in her investigations as well and their relationship/friendship is slowly progressing. For this book, a nun is murdered, one who happens to be a friend of Trixie’s and she has to investigate nuns, Deacons, priests etc. Trixie is open about her lack or questions regarding her faith, yet she is encouraging to others going through the same or similar struggles. There’s a shocking revelation so hold onto your demons!!! 🤐🤐🤐

It’s unfathomable that someone in the church would commit murrrrder, but Trixie knows all to well the fallacy of those behind the cloth. When a second body shows up, with a clue in the pockets, I immediately guessed the murderer, however, it didn’t take away from the story, and that ending 😄😄😄😄😄

This is a story of a serial killer who masquerades as a man of the church. Trixie Lavender goes ballistic when she finds out who he is. I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book.

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Dakota Cassidy's "Smoking Nun" is a breath of fresh, albeit non-smoky, air in the paranormal mystery genre. Forget your typical vampire detectives or werewolf PIs; this series introduces us to the utterly original and delightfully bizarre world of Trixie, an excommunicated nun who, along with her unusual roommate, runs a tattoo parlour. That roommate is Coop, a demon who, despite her infernal origins, is surprisingly kind and hilariously incapable of smiling.

What sets these books apart is Cassidy's unique take on the paranormal. The "para" element isn't some distant, shadowy threat; it's woven into the very fabric of our protagonist. Trixie's possession isn't a source of horror, but rather the quirky foundation upon which these warm and funny mysteries are built.

The dynamic between the grounded Trixie and the earnestly bewildered Coop is the heart of the series, creating laugh-out-loud moments alongside genuine affection, all while navigating the colourful world of ink and art.

Cassidy's writing flows effortlessly, pulling you into Trixie's world with its cast of wonderfully oddball supporting characters. From a talking owl and taking dog, and even the often-overlooked members of society like the homeless, the ensemble cast feels both bizarre and refreshingly real. These aren't just cosy paranormal mysteries; they are stories brimming with heart, humour, and a genuine affection for their unconventional characters.

If you're looking for a series that dares to be different, that offers originality, warmth, and a whole lot of laughs (and maybe some tattoo inspiration), then you absolutely must read "Smoking Nun." It's a truly unique and enjoyable ride.

Dakota Cassidy The Smoking Nun
Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book. I would have bought it anyway!

Dakota creates characters that you love, hate or drive you crazy --- but all make you laugh! Her paranormal mysteries are so much fun! The Smoking Nun is the 4th book in the series. You should read the books in order because characters change/develop as the stories progress.

Move over Jessica Fletcher (Murder, She Wrote)! Sister Trixie (resident demon is still present) is honing her detective skills. Of course, Coop, Higgs and cohorts provide support. This time the crime is personal --- beloved Sister Ophelia is murdered.

If you haven’t read any of the other books Dakota has written, you are missing out. Her books are full of zany characters that draw you in. There are plot twists and surprises. Best of all, they are light-hearted and just make me feel good! When I finish one of the books, I can’t wait for the next one!

4.5 Stars... Sister Trixie Lavender and the gang are back for another puzzling mystery... When a dear friend who also happens to be a nun is murdered, Trixie is on the case ready to solve the clues... The twisted path it leads her down is certainly unexpected, but Trixie never leaves a stone unturned in the fight for justice... As she navigates this convoluted mystery, she is also forced to face her inner demon, literally... And when the truth is exposed, the personal consequences may be more than she bargained for... Another exhilarating adventure that takes some truly frightening turns along the way... I am truly enjoying this diverse cast of characters and all the different elements they bring to the story... I look forward to more sleuthing with Trixie and the gang:)

much drama and action packed with emotional turmoil in this book

insight also into peculiarities about Religious life, and the permanent deacon status

as this get real and dangerous, more about Trixie and her faith challenges becomes clear as well. as a nun, she wasn't offered a second chance

can she solve a few mysteries, and find a bit of redemption for herself, and a few others?

whodunnit meets negotiating difficulties surrounding the life of vowed members of the Roman Catholic church and its Religious communities

Meet Trixie Lavender, Cooper O’Shea, some highly intelligent and humorous pets, Tansy, and the romantic partner, Cross Higglesworth. There are other characters in this excellent mystery but these are the main ones.
Yes, you have nuns in this story and there are plenty of twists but the surprise comes near the end and what a dousy ! I have not read the previous three books but you can read this alone but there will be a few gaps. I do recommend this book!

Cassidy continues to deliver light, witty mysteries with charm. Smoking Nun follows Trixie and Coop as they try to solve the murder of a friend and the subsequent discovery of another body, headless and fingerless. There's misdirection and some confusing assistance from Trixie's resident demon, in the form of confusing clues. But will they figure it out in time or becomes victims themselves? And can Trixie and Coop keep their secret from their close friends through it all?

Great series!

Another great book from a great author and series! This series is fun and entertaining. The characters develop so much from book to book that it really adds to the stories. The big mystery is wrapped up by the end, but there is history and back stories that continue from one book to the next. I highly recommend this author and this series!

Cute mystery with quirky characters and situations. I enjoy this light, fun cozy series. The main character is likeable and the mystery was interesting and held my attention. Hints at romance but not a main focus so far. The setting and situations make the series uniquely different from others. Start with book 1.

well that was exciting!

It took me about as long as Trixie to figure it out. I thought there was something suspicious about him anyway, but I initially thought the wrong thing.
And I think Coop needs to watch the movie about emotions-Inside Out. And we need to hear her thoughts. Or even a running commentary during it.

Religion! The good and the bad.

WOW! Dakota outdid herself with this one. Sister Trixie Lavender is investigating the death of a parish friend who was a nun. The intricacies of nundom are totally alien to me but it seems to have a lot of similarities to a bad soap opera.

In this book Coop is becoming more human. She is starting to use Trixie’s rules against her. “You must never lie.” Near the end Higgins discovers that there is something different about Trixie, as in, a demon inside her. The discovery shakes him. But he stands by her.

Unsolved Mysteries inspired mystery!

I enjoyed this story quite a lot.

But honestly, I think I missed out by starting this series with book 4.

I didn't get the references and it bothered me more than I expected.

Lesson learned.
