What do you think?

My fucking heart right now. I don't even know if I'd recommend this to someone in fear that I would destroy all of their emotions.
Edit March 2016: Ironically, I gave away my own copy to my love. I'm not sure if that's romantic or sadistic.

He did it again!
I just loved how he managed to weave two parallel stories together which are full of mystery, intrigue, and adventure.

Some authors just have IT.
“The territory of humans is life. Death does not belong to us.”
This fine piece of well-crafted, chilling literature is set in Barcelona on the cusp of the 1980s, -although the magical, timeless quality also makes the story feel like it could be taking place at any time period -, and features many of the trappings of a gothic tale: doomed love, monstrous creatures, scientific experiments gone awry and, of course, trips through the sewers.
The book is written from Oscar Drai's point of view, a fifteen-year-old boarding school pupil in Barcelona. Oscar wanders into the garden of what he assumes to be an abandoned house and meets Marina, a girl of his age, and her artist father Germán.
Oscar quickly forms a friendship with this eccentric family (as well as having a burgeoning crush on Marina), but the real intrigue begins when the mysterious and enigmatic Marina pulls him into a fascinating adventure as she leads him to a cemetery, where they watch a macabre ritual that occurs on the last Sunday of each month. At exactly ten o'clock in the morning, a veiled woman places a single rose on an unmarked grave.
Pursuing the mystery of this act leads the two into an unimaginably twisted and grim adventure in Barcelona's underworld and a dark secret that lies beneath the city streets.
Zafón weaves reality and magic, science fiction, and superstition together smoothly and beautifully, where sorrow goes hand in hand with joy and excitement, telling a compelling story shaped in part by Barcelona itself-as with most of his other novels-, bringing the city to life for the reader while telling a tale that is ominous, melancholic, and at times terrible.
“We had reached the enchanted Barcelona, the labyrinth of spirits, where streets had mythical names and the ghosts of time walked behind us.”
Zafón's narrative style is utterly captivating and the language that he employs is completely relatable. There’s a constant gothic undercurrent of madness, darkness and twisted imagination, while his atmospheric and incredibly evocative portrayal of Barcelona makes you feel as if you yourself are there experiencing everything along with the characters.
He builds up a fascinating and elaborate world and then slowly, painstakingly tearing it down again in a way that you’ll most likely find sincerely heartbreaking.
Though the protagonist is a teenage boy and in some ways feels like a YA fantasy-esque story, it reads as a lot more grown-up, one written with the deliberate intent to appeal to a wider audience.
A few memorable quotes:
⤗ “Man’s meanness is a fuse in search of a flame.”
⤗ “We are doomed to remember what never really happened.”
⤗ “The public will always choose a warmed-up lie over the cold truth.”
⤗ “Time does to the body what stupidity does to the soul.”
⤗ “Our body begins to destroy itself from the moment it is born. We are fragile. We’re creatures of passage. All that is left of us are our actions, the good or the evil we do to our fellow humans.”
“The territory of humans is life. Death does not belong to us.”

¿Te atreves a entrar?...
Todo ello lo encontraras en Marina.
10/10 A mis favoritos.
# 13. Libro ambientado en la década de los 80. Reto Popsugar 2022.

Shorter but definitely darker than The Shadow of the Wind and The Angel's Game. I wish someone made an animation based on the book, it has tons of potential. Or maybe a film, since most of the places described are real, but I'd rather see animated creepy creatures than horror-like ones.
Anyway, a fan of the novel made this video of the places in Barcelona mentioned in the book. I totally love the songand have no idea who sings it. I might just google a bit. Apparently it's Sia's My Love.

¡¡Qué maravilla!! 🖤🦋

(Review originally published on my blog, October 2013) Marina is the last of Carlos Ruiz Zafón's existing books to be translated into English, following the first three books of the Barcelona quartet (for adult readers), and the Niebla trilogy (for teenagers). Published in Spanish in 1999 - two years before the worldwide bestseller The Shadow of the Wind - it is the final young adult novel written by the author, and its transitional nature is evident in the style. It reads as a lot more 'grown-up' than the Niebla books, but the protagonist is a teenage boy and in many ways this feels like a young adult fantasy story, albeit one written with the deliberate intent to appeal to a wider audience.
Set primarily in between 1979 and 1980 - although it feels as though it could be a lot earlier - Marina is written from the point of view of Oscar Drai, a fifteen-year-old boarding school pupil in Barcelona. Lonely and bored, Oscar wanders into the garden of what he assumes to be an abandoned house and meets the beautiful, ethereal Marina, a girl of his age who is home-schooled, and her artist father Germán. Oscar is quickly drawn into a friendship with this eccentric, fascinating family (as well as having a burgeoning crush on Marina), but the real intrigue begins when Marina takes him to a nearby graveyard, where the pair watch a veiled woman place a single rose on an unmarked grave. Pursuing the mystery of this act leads the two friends into an unimaginably complex and macabre adventure in Barcelona's underworld.
This is a classic Ruiz Zafón book in that it has so much going for it, so much to be fascinated by, yet never quite makes good on that promise, and - however much you might want it to be - just isn't as good as it should be with all the brilliant ingredients that have been thrown into it. More than any of his others, this particular book seems to highlight very clearly what is both good and bad about the author's writing.
The good:
- Such rich, descriptive prose: often verging on over-the-top, flowery language, but incredibly enjoyable to lose yourself in, and lacking the awkwardness of much translated fiction.
- A constant gothic undercurrent of madness, darkness and twisted imagination.
- Atmospheric and incredibly evocative portrayal of Barcelona.
- A magical, timeless quality which makes the story feel like it could be taking place in any time period.
The bad:
- Poorly drawn, underdeveloped female characters who are all unrealistically flawless, fragile and virginal.
- Confused action scenes that become incomprehensible in places.
- The overall plot becomes so complicated and bogged down in different subplots and characters' stories that it's easy to lose track of what is actually supposed to be happening.
I did enjoy Marina - but, as usual, not as much as I wished I could. With its rich, ominous mixture of characters, places, dreadful misdeeds and weird stuff, it makes for a largely compelling read that doesn't feel compelling as a whole - I felt deflated when I reached the end, and cared little about any of the characters. It feels a bit churlish to complain about characters being two-dimensional in a novel that would be more suited to a reader half my age, but so much attention seems to have been paid to the descriptive details of the settings that the people it's all supposed to revolve around have been neglected. It's telling that the book is named for Marina yet, having read it, I have nothing whatsoever to say about that character. I wasn't sure about the fantasy element, either (again, this would probably be far more enjoyable and frightening to the hypothetical younger reader), and one thing that happened near the end was so ridiculously clichéd and terrible that I nearly lost my patience completely.
I was drawn to Marina by the same things that have made me read almost all of Ruiz Zafón's books, and I was disappointed by the exact same things that have disappointed me in the author's other work - a feeling that the whole thing is more about style than substance, and terrible female characters. It's bound to be a hit with die-hard fans of the author since it offers so many similarities with the rest of his books: admittedly, it's interesting to see many of the themes of his adult fiction emerging here, and it would probably make a good starting point for those unfamiliar with The Shadow of the Wind et al. I'm not wholly convinced that Marina lives up to the tagline on the cover which declares it to be 'a gothic tale for all ages', but it's a fun read, if a frustratingly imperfect one.

For a book that has been described as the best Zafon since The Shadow of the Wind, there are simply no words to describe what a consummate disappointment the experience of reading Marina was. It was a book with so much potential that simply went nowhere. It was full of two-dimensional characters and was utterly derivative of much greater works. It was wholly unoriginal and, therefore, such a disappointment to read.
I am always wary with translated books, as they seem to lose a lot in the act of translation. I feel that this might be the case with Zafon's Marina as most Spanish reviews seem to give it glowing praise. Perhaps there is something about the language and descriptions in the Spanish language that provides this novel with a depth which it lacks in English. Or maybe that Zafon's labour of love was translated by someone else, rather than the author himself, made it lose a little of its impact.
The pacing of Marina is way off. It starts with the protagonist, Oscar, being mysteriously discovered alone in a train station by a policeman, unwilling to talk about the recent ordeal which had him missing without a trace for a week. We would hope that this mystery would have a thrilling resolution; however, the reason for the week's disappearance is truly mundane as we find out toward the end of the novel. The mystery, which is unrelated to Oscar's disappearance, is also never solved organically. Instead, we follow Oscar and the titular Marina from secondary character to secondary character, giving us all the relevant information we need to know in long, convenient soliloquies with no apparent reason for doing so.
There is no sense of character for anyone in the novel. We know nothing about Oscar or Marina other than they exist in this one moment. The novel seems to be narrated by an adult Oscar, but we don't even know what he went on to become or how this tale affected his life to the point where he felt it had to be told. The motivations for secondary characters to give these two teenagers all the information they ask for are non-existent. In some cases, I would go so far as to say it would be a breach of confidentiality to have given them any of the information. A policeman decides to provide a random 15-year-old with details of an ongoing corporate investigation, and a doctor decides to share the patient information of not only a patient, but his friend? And why? Because they asked nicely? On top of that, Zafon's female characters are appallingly written; he is very old fashioned in his descriptions of women who always remain white, virginal, and fragile. The pedestal grates after a while.
When I say this book is derivative, it is because it smacks of unoriginality. The two most glaring comparisons can come from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (to the point where there is a doctor Shelley whose daughter is conveniently named Maria) with motif's of the creation of life, what playing god can mean for yourself and those around you, and the monstrosities created when you play god. The second most notable parallel is between Marina and Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera. We have the setting of an opulent theatre, the theme of physical deformity, even some vague allusions to 'carnival freaks', which is never really properly developed other than providing a convenient McGuffin through the discovery of an old photo album. The pictures of physical deformities are described by Marina and Oscar, quite distastefully, as 'horrific' (which also never goes anywhere in the plot).
This book had potential, but to say that Marina did not reach that potential is an understatement. What an absolute disappointment.

Marina is a farewell letter to youth, to naivety. It might not be perfect but it has a lot of heart and creativity. The characters reveal themselves chaotically, just like the story they´re trapped into. Mystery, horror, love, and a city about to reveal all its secrets. Carlos Ruiz Zafon was a master of storytelling.

Lectura ágil, historia entretenida, personajes bien definidos, intriga,... Lo recomiendo pero sin esperar un novelón. En mi humilde opinión, sobrevalorado.
