Having problems at home with her grandmother and father, Caitlin is torn between her new boyfriend, Laurence Baxter, and her former love, Jed Michaels, who has refused to see her since he discovered her terrible secret
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
After Sweet Valley High came the Caitlin trilogy, followed a few more books; I think I bought most of them in the States, and read this sometime in 1987 to 89, I think. The Caitlin series were a bit more daring the SVH books, just a bit. Think PG-13.
Talk about predictability! The conclusion to this 1980’s trilogy has it all: from Caitlin finding love with Laurence to heal the heartache Jed has consciously inflicted upon her, Caitlin making it up with Ginny and Emily, Caitlin back on the social ladder of Highgate Academy and still orchestrating things like a crew director, Caitlin having succeeding in her mission-in-disguise to befriend Diana and be forgiven by the latter, Caitlin finding acceptance with her long-lost father and grandmother and finally, Caitlin having her happily ever after in the arms of Jed, after Laurence steps aside due to his unselfish love for her.
All of this wrapped up very neatly in an elaborate bow. I can’t help but balk at the way this trilogy concluded. Everything worked out for Caitlin, with hardly a hiccup.
