“It is the power of the mind to be unconquerable.” - Seneca, The Stoic Philosophy of Essays and Letters What does it mean to be “ unconquerable ?” Becoming unconquerable has nothing to do with forming an army or strengthening your muscles. In fact, it has nothing to do with anything physical at all. It’s about changing how you view the world and your part in it. You become unconquerable when you learn how to deal with the curveballs of life. How do you find joy in your darkest hour? How do you feel rich when you have nothing? You won’t find these teachings in today’s schools, but this is exactly what the ancient philosophers were teaching. Events outside of your control should have no impact on your joy, happiness, peace, or confidence. If these things are going to happen anyway, why not turn them in to positive events? Instead of always being the victim, turn yourself into the victor. All it takes is a shift in perspective; and that’s what Stoicism is all about. The timeless wisdom of the Stoics can help anyone find inner peace and joy and ‘ Stoicism – Understanding and Practicing the Philosophy of the Stoics ’ is the perfect starting point. When I was first introduced to Stoicism I was amazed to find that I naturally inclined to many of the ideas and principles inherent to Stoicism. I've read other books that are fantastic introductions to this way of thinking, but I cannot say this book was one of them. This book read more like a vacant self-help book rather than a thorough and organized exposure to such a valuable subject. The writing is poor and disorganized, and the fluff that pads the actual substance is distracting and likely to turn off people looking for answers. If you want to learn about Stoicism then I'd recommend finding a different introductory text, or take the long view and consider reading The Daily Stoic.
Very good, with many valuable insights and areas of Stoicism explored with gusto. Just one critique, in that I needed to read some chapters over and over before I could meditate on, how this teaching could be applied to my life - maybe this is more a reflection on me than the book. I will read it again...and again...
I found this book to be a fresh and honest look at life purpose without pounding the pulpit. Excellent and thought provoking.
I have not heard of Stoic prior to reading this book. It may be the missing piece of the puzzle. I enjoyed reading it and learning to think differently.
The best book so far that I have read on Stoicism to date. I read Ryan Holiday books but this one I feel did a better job at helping me understand the goals and foundations of Stoicism. Great Book
I enjoyed Faber's clear and concise take on Stoicism. This a really good book that gets a person thinking. I recommend it if you're curious about Stoicism or are already a practitioner.
Mr. Faber's book is well written and explains the topic of Stoicism thoroughly. I have read the book twice as well as the second one which I'm about to read again.
I have always lived my life with integrity, never really understood the path I was on and this book feels it was written about and my life. I so related to this book in some logical and uncanny way. Amazing if you need to understand yourself and the path you are in then this book is for you.
