Like a typical teenager, Dominic Gambino struggles with love, bullies, and social awkwardness. But he’s anything but typical when he begins having premonitions of tragic events. After he reveals his sixth-sense to his police officer father, the two devise a plan to use his visions to stop criminals and hit the streets as a crime-fighting duo. Searching for answers as to why he’s developed psychic abilities, Dominic discovers a world that only exists in the history books and learns that his power has dangerous consequences.
I'll not present any obvious spoilers, but there is so much about the story and the places the protagonist gets to see that I would love to mention. This story is about a young teen with an extraordinary gift. He discovers it at an early age and that sets the story's pace and genre. I loved it. He falls in love and the relationship with her is real and believable. His discovery of how he got his ability and the history behind that is engrossing! I wanted more and loved what I got. This is at 5 star book but it has some flaws, minor though, and they aren't enough to drop the score to 4. I loved it so much. First, the teen speaks as if he has a much older level of experience. This is not out of the bounds of possibility and could be explained that his gift is linked to his understanding that most of us learn only through living it. My final, extremely minor item, is a couple of places where we learn about things from other POVs that aren't clearly delineated. Moving between POVs it's okay but I got lost a few times as I entered the mind of character 1, then 2, then 3 but I didn't immediately realize it had happened because the teen boy is the POV throughout most of the story. Again, it's not enough to lower my score as I enjoyed the book completely.
The Psychic Son is an interesting read. I was pleased we saw the story through Dominic's eyes (the Psychic) as I believed it would be told from the parents point of view. I was captured from the first chapter and enjoyed the quick pace of the book. I liked that Dominic told his parents about his visions once he realised what they were and I was happy for him that they were supportive. Later to discover a history of witches within their family was another twist to the tale. I thoroughly enjoyed Dominic's travels back in time and finding out more about Arabella. I was left wanting to know more afterwards and still am. I hope having these visions doesn't become a hindrance for Dominic but rather he continues to use it for good as he has done so far. I have given this four stars instead of five because, personally, I would have liked more, especially in regards to Arabella. Other than that, the story was well-written and a refreshing change from other paranormal stories I have read.
I actually really enjoyed this book! It was a very easy and quick read for me which was a nice pallet cleanser after a large/long fantasy book prior. It had all the feelings in it! Scary moments, funny, sad, eerie. I found myself giggling at some parts and tearing up at others. I liked that there wasn’t any boring details, that is enjoyable for me because I didn’t get bored or want to skip anything. I loved Arabella! I think Chris should write some witchy books next! Just finished the second book too! Looking forward to many more from him.
Awesome read. Grabs you on page 1 and doesn’t let go.
Loved the characters bust mostly loved the incredible details. The color of this book is so bright. I can still see the beautiful flower on the bus seat.
I thought this book was pretty creative and the author has a strong voice! The character voice is a bit mature for YA for me, but I see the author released an Adult thriller recently. I’m definitely interested in checking that one out too! If you want an interesting read with a strong narrator’s voice, this is a great book to check out!
The Psychic Son is riveting from the very first sentence to the last. I laughed. I cried. I held my breath at times. Chris Galvez is one of my new favorite writers. The story is told from the perspective of a teenage boy who begins having visions of terrible events. As he seeks answers to why he's developed this power, he learns that he comes from a mysterious lineage of witches who had supernatural powers. The story unfolds like a coming-of-age crime drama with heart and humor and magic.
From the first page to the last I was intrigued. The vivid details made me feel like I was sitting next to Dom through his entire journey. I look forward to a sequel with high Hope's for a McKenzie reunion! "HEAVY IS THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE CROWN" LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF THIS BOOK. I want more!!!!!
It took me awhile to get into this book due to the unusual style of the author, but once I did it hooked me right in. I enjoyed reading Dominic's journey as he discovers and learns how to harness his psychic abilities, and then use them for good to help a lot people. I also loved Dominic's closeness with his parents who accept him fully for who and what he is, and his relationship with his girlfriend was so cute and sweet. It was neat learning where Dom's inherited abilities came from, and the way it delved into his ancestry made you feel like you had a front-row seat to that different place and time period.
All in all, this was a well written portrayal of an unusual boy faced with extraordinary circumstances. Christopher Galves is a great writer, and I can't wait to read more of his work.
I don't read fiction. I'm all about History and Archeology. However, since this topic is about a boy with special abilities, I read it. I label myself "as A Knower". I have been one since I was a small baby. I relate to all his abilities . This is a field that is hard to understand. Please read with an open mind, and enjoy the story. Mr.Galvez has done an amazing job. Law enforcement officers would definitely relate along with the secular population. Very well written.
