I was really looking forward to this book after listening to book 1, My Sister’s Detective, last week. I would not recommend jumping into this without having read/listened to that first – this is wrapping up many mysteries started there.

This is a great series for those who want romance to take a smaller role in the story and while Slater & Maggie’s relationship does progress, it’s closed door. I continue to love the banter between Maggie & Slater as well as the rest of the characters. I’m thrilled that snarky teen Jasmine makes regular appearances and her role as pseudo-little-sister brings out a softer side to the sometimes “get off my lawn” Slater.

That said, this book continues some pretty serious themes including child trafficking, kidnapping, and murder. I like that Jones gives us a few smaller stories that weave together into a larger narrative. Slater & Maggie are officially kicking off their Private Investigation firm (the name selection process is at times hilarious). While continuing to probe Davey’s death, they also investigate a missing person, and pull off three different rescues. Not everyone is as trustworthy as they seem.

While everything feels wrapped up this time around, I’m definitely looking forward to book 3, Slater’s Tempest. While the ebook is available now – I’ll be waiting for the audio. My understanding is it should be released in the next few weeks.

Tom Jordon again gives a huge cast of characters unique voices and personalities. His ability and consistency with different ages, sexes, and accents really brought the story to life and makes it easy to keep track of who is who. I’m looking forward to Jordan’s narration as the series continues and I’ll definitely be looking for more of his work.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from Audiobooks Unleashed and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Further exciting adventures of Slater – and Maggie!

Author TJ Jones elects to remain rather anonymous despite the fact that there are now five very fine novels in publication. Perhaps TJ Jones is a moniker: we do not know whether this is a woman or a man – and that adds to the special aspect of the writing. The previous novels comprised the Callie series. Now we enter a world of romance and adventure.

For those fortunate enough to have read Book 1 of the Slater Mysteries, the unique personalities of both Eric Slater and Maggie Jeffries are familiar. They both are now private investigators and this book adds a new dimension to their derring-do. The setting of the book is Florida and the story opens slowly but with considerable atmosphere – ‘Levi Davis claimed to be the husband of the great, great, granddaughter of the long-deceased Son of the south and President of the Confederacy. Putting aside the curious fact that he and his wife had started life with the same last name, that seemed like an extremely tenuous and convoluted relationship to assert when you were self-aggrandizing about your claim on destiny. But then Levi had accomplished very little in his thirty odd years and he probably felt the need to inflate his own ego. He didn’t like when I pointed that out to him, or the crack about keeping it in the family. And for a guy his size, he couldn’t throw a decent punch. I would have liked nothing better than to hit him back, but a couple of his good old boys had a hold on both my arms, and a fourth was doing his best to pulverize my kidneys.’

And so we are off on a new adventure. Refreshingly, TJ incorporates a broad gender palate that adds a fine aspect not usually fond in stories of this genre and TJ handles it well. The story per se is a well conceived one – ‘Maggie and Slater turn full-time investigators and the stakes are high. A girl is missing, another is kidnapped, and the man who killed Slater's best friend returns. The talented pair put their lives on the line, fighting to save one of their own and stop the trafficking of young girls on the Florida coast. It gets physical when Slater and his partner fight to protect an aging black veteran from the prejudices of a small town and the failings of his own memory as they search for the young woman he may have murdered. While they investigate, a kidnapper plots and a murderer returns to Jacksonville. No one is safe from Rashad Dinar, international oil tycoon, and purveyor of the innocent. They can't save the world, but the pair will do whatever it takes to save one young girl and stop the man that killed Davey Templeton.’

Fine writing, well-constructed story with many surprises, and all pulled off like a seasoned veteran. TJ Jones deserves watching – and a bit more bio info would be welcome!

"A girl is missing, another is kidnapped, a third is forced into prostitution. Three girls, all victims of men they thought they could trust."

If a summary could be written that would lead me to click "buy with one-touch", that's the one. "My Sister's Fear" is number two in T.J. Jones's Slater Mystery series. There is a backstory that predates this installment, about the murder of Maggie's brother, and it didn't feel forced as sub plots sometimes can. This is set in Florida, a place many forget is very much the deep south. That mentality is crucial to the tone of this novel and, in my opinion, makes the plot pop all that much more. That fact is surprising especially considering the author is a Minnesota native. I loved the main characters, Maggie and Slater, as well as the supporting ones. I found the dialogue witty and natural feeling and the pace of the story flowed perfectly. This was simply an enjoyable read, easily recommended to friends and family.

Eric Slater returns along with his partner Maggie in the second book in this mystery series. In this book the duo is in a small town and get roped into investigating the suspected death of a young girl that an older African American veteran is accused of. Something doesn’t add up though and Eric is determined to find out just what really is going on. What they don’t expect to uncover is a child trafficking ring along with prostitution right under their noses. What’s worse, a killer seems to have returned to town.
A fast paced and intriguing read, this book was well written and furthers the story from the first book. You don’t have to read the first one to make sense of this book though. I enjoyed the story, the mystery and the injustices towards the kids was enough to make me mad and I loved the ending. Justice was served!

My Sisters Fear another good read bt TJ Jones. A bit slower to get into because of the need to bring the reader up to speed of the characters from the first book. This book has romance, action and mystery. TJ Jones does a very good job in painting a picture of the porn venue tastefully with out going into detail. Rich and poor characters keep you on your toes. Wally's talent in carvings and learning of his first love along with teaching a young gal his talents so the art is not lost keeps you reading. Action continues with a kidnapping and the plane crash. Not at all a disappointing read. Looking forward to Slaters Temptest the third in the series. Ahhh and a 4th book coming this spring.

This series continues to impress. The characters are all fully developed. The story well written, and the plot has enough twists and sub-story lines that it will plunge you headfirst all the way to the end. I highly recommend.

Slater, better at his work as a PI than a carpenter, finds himself in the midst of another hard case that picks up where the first book left off. Determined to do the right thing and avenge the murder of his childhood friend, he goes up against those involved in human trafficking and assisting in the investigation.

Maggie, his partner both in business and love, is a force to be reckoned with, and she will do anything to protect her family and those in need.

Excitement, murder mystery with a great cast

Maggie and Eric are private investigators in the south and have a habit of finding trouble around every corner. In this adventure, the pair are trying to expose a group that is kidnapping young girls and forcing them into the sex trade.

The story is fast paced and will grab your attention and pull you along into this complex mystery, searching for the truth which is hidden somewhere amid the lies.

I found the characters to be well developed and the story was intriguing. I think anyone who likes mystery and adventure will love this story. Check this one out and let me know your thoughts.

This is the 3rd of T.J. Jones' books I've read and he's quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. (And I've read a lot of books.) He has a gift for dialogue and creating relatable characters. And some characters you love to hate! This was another page-turner; one I couldn't put down. I continued right onto Slater #3 when I was finished! Highly recommend it!

just desserts served up

The threat from shadowy, criminal figures associated with the death of Davey and the bad behavior of the sisters’ father and brother.

As the investigation practice takes on a missing persons case, and Slater’s 40th birthday approaches, danger looms from multiple directions.

Jumble of words

The first book in this series caused me to try this one. The short story in the beginning of this one was over soon and the rest was hard to follow and uneven. Then there were the grammar errors! Sorry to say but save your money.

I enjoyed this book very much! The characters are well developed and nobody’s perfect which makes for fun reading. Although suspense/mystery, it is also a fun read. Looking forward to the additional books in this series.

Book 2

I am really enjoying this Slater series. The only thing that kind of bothers me, a forty year old 20 year Navy man that doesn't seem to know what he wants to do. PI or contractor.

I liked this book but not as much as the first one. Interesting to see the characters mature and interact so will probably read the next one, to see what happens to Slater.

Crazy!

This book started crazy and ended crazy. There were so many great parts of this mystery. It is action packed and just when I thought the book was die down a bit and have more calm parts, boom! Something else happened to them. It was great. This book knows how to keep a reader interested, that’s for sure. A big plus was the dialogue was really well done as well.
