The Nudge Man

Rate this book
A washed up reporter, an escaped convict, a sociopathic gangster. All are hunting the Nudge Man…

Wheelchair bound, born again, ex-gangster, Eric Hennessey offers down on his luck reporter, Harrison Vaughan, a job. Track down the Nudge Man, a mysterious vigilante who’s stolen most of Hennessey’s money, ill-gotten gains which now Hennessey wants to use to do God’s work. Trouble is, Harry has no desire to work for a sociopathic murderer, even if he is an apparently changed man.

Harry is estranged from his family since a fabricated scandal destroyed his career. Hennessey tells Vaughan it was the Nudge Man who set him up for the fall. Find The Nudge Man and Harry has the chance for redemption and maybe even his family back.

However, Hennessey has another objective in mind. Unknown to Harry his family were taken into witness protection and had to cut ties with everyone after Harry’s son saw a murder – carried out by Eric Hennessey. Hennessey has been looking for them ever since and now may have a way in – Harry himself.

And others are on the trail of the Nudge Man, including the British government and an American secret service agent. Then there’s the lawyer who offers Harry £1m to stay away from The Nudge Man.

With more questions than answers and hapless guard dog Bonzo, whose bark is definitely worse than his bite, at his side Harry begins his search.

Can Harry find the Nudge Man and save his family? Or will Hennessey exact his revenge?

Set in the once grand town of Margate in the south of England, the now broken and depressed seaside resort becomes its own character in this detective thriller, perfect for fans of Carl Hiaasen.

The Nudge Man is the first book in the series featuring Harrison Vaughan. Buy it now to discover whether Harry can find the Nudge Man in this tense crime thriller series.

What a great adventure filled with black humor in a race to find a criminal, The Nudge Man, who seems much like Robin Hood but Everybody wants to find him!! An ex-journalistic reporter,Harry Vaughn, is contacted by several folks who believe his reporting skills will assist him in locating this man. He himself had been discredited several years ago, losing his job, wife and family, even though eventually found innocent. But his passion never left him, and with even the hint that this Nudge Man was the one who destroyed him is enough for him to start investigating..well that and the fact he had little change in his pockets!!
A very intriguing story, I found it slightly tough to get into at the beginning, but it is all needed background. Once the search starts rolling it is an exciting ride along with Vaughn and the dog he picks up , Bonzo. Great twists and turns as you think several different people are the Nudge Man until the surprising ending!!
I received an ARC from author Keith Nixon, who I thank for some laughs and fun along the road, and I write my honest thoughts and feelings in this review for a 5 STAR book, hoping that what I say catches Your interest!!

I hope there will be more in this potential charming series. I can’t wait and after reading The Nudge Man I’m sure you’ll want more too.

I thought The Gray Series was fantastic and now, this talented Author has excelled himself again with The Nudge Man - A brilliant, black humour Crime Thriller. There is plenty in this book to keep the reader gripped. This is about a Journalist who is determined to find the story to take his career from down in the doldrums into the stratosphere. He is flippant and this gets him into all kinds of trouble. However, as the story proceeds the reader sees him drawn into chasing down The Nudge Man. The twists and turns keep one gripped and the ending, totally unexpected, will knock your socks off. It is one of this Author's best stand alone Crime Thrillers.

Everyone, it seems, is after The Nudge Man, a vigilante of sorts who likes to stir up sh*t, but whose identity is a secret. Some of the players in the search are the governments of both Britain and the USA, as well as a born again gangster now confined to a wheelchair and journalist Harrison Vaughn. See, Vaughn lost his family and his job 5 years ago at the hands of The Nudge Man and now is jumping at the chance to earn a big payday by tracking down his nemesis. But apparently not everyone wants Harrison to succeed on this quest.........in fact, a very strange lawyer offers him a vast amount of cash to stay away. Oh, and along the way, Vaughn picks up a "partner" in Bonzo, an enormous dog that steals many scenes.

A witty, complex crime thriller with lots of twists and turns and a cast of well written, intriguing characters, both good and bad.........this was a great story that unfolded at a perfect pace. Hopefully the first in a new series for rising star Keith Nixon.

There are some people in life that just seem like they are metaphorically walking under ladders all the time because bad luck just seems to wait for them at every opportunity. Well meet down and out former newspaper reporter Harrison Vaughan, a man who was set up five years ago in a lie that ruined his life, cost him his reputation, his career and his family. So when a small and very illegal opportunity is put to him his £1.39 bank balance doesn’t give him any choice but to take it.
So now I am only a couple of chapters in and well I already love this guy, Harry has a brilliant dry humour that not everyone in the story finds amusing. Now I am listening to this book at work in a store, the store is closed and from aisle to aisle all my work colleagues can hear is me laughing. This brings me to my second favourite character Bonzo the guard dog. If ever there was a match made in heaven than it was for this pair.
Things go from bad to worse, to a glimmer of hope for Harry to find out who is behind the name of the man who ruined his life, The Nudge Man. But, there is always a but, this means that he will have to play ball with some rather dodgy characters including a real vile piece of work, ex-gangster Eric Hennessey. The race is on as to who will find The Nudge Man first.
This is a story full of memorable characters, each and everyone with their quirky unmistakable essence, there was no having to think where they fitted in. Oh boy I could fill a swear jar from when I found out the porkies that were told by some of the people, I am, I have to say quite gullible. This story makes a real solid key stone to build this series on. Absolutely loved it!
I wish to thank Sarah Hardy of Books on the Bright Side Publicity and Promo for an e-copy of this book, which I have reviewed honestly

Harrison Vaughan breaks into a compound after some documentation he has been paid to get hold of. by a born again ex gangster who is now wheelchair bound. When arrested a lawyer magically arrives to defend him. He is a journalist but had an accusation made against him five years before and he lost not only his job but his family in the process. He is now doing anything he can to keep his head above water and desperately wants to get back in touch with those he loves- however he does not know where they are and have never been in touch with him since. A woman and her children are being bundled off swiftly into a witness protection programme- we know not why. The President of the United States is involved in something as are several of his deputies including a secret service agent. Some of which is “only” about comments made on social media platforms. Many are after the Nudge man for different reasons- the criminals, the government, and the USA. The Nudge man does just that- nudge people into doing what her wants- however no-one knows who he is and only a prisoner with a reputation for being violent has the information. This took me a little while to get into but then I really enjoyed it. There are lots of characters and it took a few pages to get to know who was who and why!. Harrison is a likeable character. Down on his luck and his only weapon is his sense of humour. I loved Bonzo and his antics and that Harrison took him with him wherever he went. A black comedy crime thriller with a difference.

From the opening scenes, I knew I was going to hit it straight off with Harry. There is a certain amount of humour through out the novel which I really enjoyed. It makes Harry that bit more endearing and don’t even get me started on his dog Bonzo! Let’s just say I loved the dog and the relationship that him and his owner, Harry, have.

We get to visit a few different areas in England which I really enjoyed. The author really gets across the settings of where he takes us to in the story. This is an author who has done his homework, making the story come to life, visually and realistically.

I love the concept of the Nudge Man. It had me intrigued to find out who is behind the name. They certainly have a lot to answer for and my heart went out to Harry with all that he has lost due to this person as well as how it has affected his whole life. What’s more worrying, is just how many other people are after him.

The Nudge Man is a gripping, gritty and highly enjoyable story. There is so much to like about this crime novel. For one it is the first in a series, so I know I have hopefully lots more to look forward to. It has a rugged and lovable protagonist who has a dog as his side kick. It certainly ticked all my boxes and can’t wait to read more.

If you want to give someone the gift that keeps on giving, buy them a copy of The Nudge Man. I know it's fiction but....I can't stop thinking that maybe there's something to the concept. That person who decides we're all going to start wearing corduroy, or makes things happen locally where all other tried and tested avenues have failed. Of course, poor, blighted Harrison Vaughan is in desperate need of the positive help of The Nudge Man. His middle name should be 'Unlucky'. The best thing about the book is the dark humour is as black as night, the thrills are like a rollercoaster of emotional tension and the glimmers of happiness are enough to light the entire path of good intentions. A thriller mystery book with laugh out loud moments, poignant, bring-tears-t0-your-eyes moments and edge of your seat, OMG, we're all going to die moments as well. Throw into that a pinch of romance, a soupcon of happy-ever-after, and I may never need to buy another book again! Everything that's brilliant in a variety of different genres brought together in one neat package. Of course I'll buy another book, especially if it's got Harrison Vaughan in it, cos I loves him I do! Thank you Mr Nixon, another gem from the pen of the master!

Keith Nixon is rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors. Having enjoyed the Solomon Gray series, I had high hopes for this new character. I was not disappointed! As with the previous books that I’ve read, the author’s storytelling is compelling, with short brisk chapters and pacey narrative, the kind that makes you say to yourself ‘just one more chapter’ and end up burning the midnight oil! Harrison Vaughan is a superb new character, channelling the author’s acerbic wit and lightening the mood despite being down on his luck and being put through the wringer from every conceivable direction. Surrounded by an array of instantly entertaining characters, some caricature by design and others will real depth and warmth, Harry seeks to find the enigmatic ‘Nudge Man’ and understand his motivations and machinations. The descriptions of Margate, Broadstairs and a host of other locations are once again vivid and tangible but delivered efficiently and expertly so as not to distract from the twists and turns of the rollercoaster plotline. An intelligent, humorous and at times convoluted story that delivers first class pure entertainment from beginning to end.

The Nudge Man by Keith Nixon
Harrison Vaughn #1

Gripping beginning to what proved to be a fast-paced action-packed thrilling story. Harry Vaughn is a rather ordinary man a bit down on his luck and out of options who suddenly finds himself in an extraordinary and perilous position. Being pushed and pulled by those who do and don’t want him to find “The Nudge Man” he doesn’t know who to believe or what path to follow...at least in the beginning. As the story unfolds his path becomes more and more clear although he is definitely not in the driver’s seat. There is darkness but also a bit of comic relief through Harry’s dry sense of wit.

I found myself liking Harry more and more as the story progressed. I kept wondering how he would be able to achieve what he had set out to do and where he would find himself by the end of the book. Harry is a man who really doesn’t seem to care much about living as he has lost most everything he valued in life but that does not stop him in his quest. His perseverance and tenacity, along with his ability to find clues and information, leads him on quite a journey. He interacts with good and evil men, meets people who have been helped and harmed by The Nudge Man, interacts with government types from both England and the USA and makes a canine friend that nearly steals the show. I am not sure where this series will lead Harry next BUT as he still doesn’t know who framed him for something he did not do I have a feeling he will be looking into who set him up in a way that took away so much from him. I can’t wait for book two in this series!

Did I like this book? Definitely
Would I like to read more in this series? Without a doubt

Thank you to Book on the Bright Side Publicity and Promotion for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This book is well written, with lots of deep characters and the ‘odd dash’ of dark humour, that we have grown accustomed to from Keith. I can’t say I particularly liked any of the characters (other than the dog!), so I was able to read the book without worrying what would become of them - this in itself is refreshing and allowed me to really get into the tale.

The storyline moves at a good pace as the plot twists and turns - I read this book in a couple of sittings and would be keen to read the next - should there be one in the pipeline.

The Nudge Man is the newest release from Keith Nixon and I loved it. He introduces us to Harrison "Harry" Vaughan, an out of luck reporter who is separated from his family that he's not seen in about 5 years. Nothing seems to be good in Harry's life and I absolutely loved him as a character.
The Nudge Man of the title seems to be someone a bit like a Super Hero, helping out those less fortunate when something bad happens to them but these actions have left him being hunted by many people and Harry is "persuaded" by a local crime boss to lead the hunt. The story then becomes a twisted tale, meeting loads of interesting characters along the way including Bonzo a guard dog Harry borrows as protection.
As with all of Keith's books the characters are well developed, easily getting under my skin to make their story important to me. I'm hoping The Nudge Man is the start of another series from Keith as I want to know where life takes Harry and Bonzo next.
This is a great read from Keith who keeps his stories full of interest and up to date references, including the President of America who is upset over a tweet, I wonder who that could be.
Once you've read this you really must read some of his other books, especially the Solomon Gray series, you'll not be disappointed.

Harrison, Harry, Vaughan is a discredited journalist that believes his wife divorced him and left because of it. But things are about to change for him with former gangster Eric Hennessey offers him the job of finding The Nudge Man. Eric tells Harry that The Nudge Man is the one that caused Harry’s downfall. So Harry goes looking and finds a lot of people are looking for The Nudge Man, some willing to offer a lot of money for Harry to walk away.

But this is not some simple investigation. It seems Eric knows more about Harry’s family than first though. He is looking for them himself and knows why they disappeared. He is planning on using Harry to get them. The question is if Harry is going to find The Nudge Man and if he can really get his family back.

This is a great, action packed story that kept me on the edge of my seat. At first I felt for Harry thinking his wife left over the scandal. But when you find out what really happened I was hoping that he could get back together. I was really draw into the whole Nudge Man. There were so many possibilities that they could have been and I was completely thrown when I learned the truth.

This is a great thriller that will keep you flipping pages until the end. This is only my second book from author Keith Nixon but I will be checking out his other books. I can’t wait to see what trouble Harry gets himself into next.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this and it didn't disappoint.

Being a fan of this authors other works (DS Solomon Gray series and the fabulous Konstatin series) I knew I was in for a treat. Even if you haven't read the other books (why not?) you'll still love this as it has a different leading character and storyline although keeps faithful to the other books with slight nods to people and places.

Black, dark humour from a washed up reporter who manages to get himself mixed up with several people hunting the mysterious Nudge Man. Why do all these people want to find The Nudge Man, why do they think Harry is the man for the job and will it bring him closer to finding out what happened to his family? Harry soon sets out taking along his new best friend, guard dog Bonzo.

There are laughs galore, The Flag pub with it's colourful landlord is hilarious, and Harrys relationship with his new found friend Bonzo but also a great storyline that kept me hooked till the end.

Did Harry find The Nudge Man and did he get his questions answered? You'll have to read it and find out!

Highly recommended 5 stars.

A page-turning romp through the low-life connections of a washed-up reporter, his canine less than on the ball companion, a ferocious gangster who claims to have found god, an even more ferocious psychopathic convict who promptly escapes prison, plus rogue agents from MI5 and the CIA as they all hunt for the mysterious Nudge Man.

A few years ago, Harrison Vaughn was smeared with a false allegation that led to him losing both his job prospects and his family. Now there’s the promise of retribution if he can track down the Nudge Man, the shadowy figure who apparently set him up. But the more he learns, the more complicated it becomes. Everyone wants Harry’s jaded skills but why? His family are in witness protection. What did his son see? Who is protecting them? And from what?

If Harry can keep ahead of the various murderous killers on his tail he might save his family. He might even survive to find the Nudge Man.

I really enjoyed the twists, reveals and dark humour in this fast-paced novel. No spoilers but there’s one question left for Harry at the end of the book and I’m looking forward to a sequel for its answer.

Love a new series! And coming from the author of one of my favourite series (Solomon Gray) I was really looking forward to this!

Meet Harrison Vaughan. Estranged from his family, his career in tatters and with the sum total of £1.34 in his account, he is offered a job by ex-gangster, now born-again Christian Eric Hennessey. The job is to find the elusive Nudge Man who Hennesey believes has stolen from him. When he tells Harry that it is also the shy vigilante who set him up the fall that led to his current situation, he jumps at the chance.
With the chance to get his life and especially his family back, how far will Harry have to go to uncover the whereabouts of The Nudge Man?

Took me a little time to get into the story, but once it got flowing it was a brilliant story with some fabulous twists! And as much as I am looking forward to more from Harry, it has to be said that the real star of the show was Bonzo the dog!

A great start to a new series. Harry Vaughn is an appealing character, not particularly fine and upstanding but not the worst of the worse either. That might be Hennessy- who seems to have found God, or is it Lavender who isn't quite what is expected. Or is it the elusive Nudge Man who seems to be part criminal, part avenger. Harry is drawn into the search for him, as are the Americans, although somewhat secretly, and then are others who are warning him to stay away, and to stop looking. There are some great minor characters as well, who pop up briefly but are well realised.
The reason for the 4 not 5 stars? Well for me one part of this felt off; a step too far in terms of the credibility and integrity of the story so for that it loses a star. ~Overall a gripping and enthralling read. Well worth reading

The mysterious nudge man...is he truly bad or is he a good guy trying to rectify the bad?
His actions seem to vary from very small acts to rectify wrongs to much more significant breaches of the law.
Harrison is a reporter, mostly in name as he seems to not really be writing much these days. instead he is recruited by an ex-gangster to find the nudge man.
Harrison sets off on the convoluted trail following the evidence, speaking to those the nudge man wronged to correct a wrongdoing and being warned off the case more than once by law enforcement agents from more than one country.
The gangsters real aim soon comes to light for the reader, if not immediately for Harrison as we discover Harrison's family did not walk out on him after all and that he was set up, ostensibly by the nudge man.
The characters are great, from the like-able Harrison to the vile and scheming Hennessey and the repugnant Lavender and the plot keeps you speculating about the true identity of the nudge man right to the reveal.

This book is a gritty, intense, fast-paced, riveting, artful melding of stunning psychological thrills and nail-biting suspense. It is exactly the kind of edgy mystery that I crave, full of dark secrets, shocking plot twists and pulse-pounding, palpable tension. And, the cast of quirky, realistic characters really brings the story to life!

But, for me, Bonzo steals the show. I loved watching him coax sourpuss Harry out of his comfort zone and teach him to be more human. I can't wait for the next story featuring this delightful duo.

This was my first read by Nixon and, with this book, he easily achieves "favorite author list" status.

Elizabeth didn’t want to be used by the police again. Maddox standing there saying to hurry get the children, and into witness protection.. he had been there from the beginning, a trust that hadn’t been broken, and now was not the time to question. We have Harry, with lies to,d he lost his career, family. Gangster gives him an opportunity for revenge, get his career back, can he trust him. A gripping thriller, you have the pieces, how will it turn out.

After a bumpy start where I found myself getting confused with the storyline jumping around so much I really enjoyed it.
I found myself repeatedly saying “what the hell” with all the plot twists I did not see coming, very well written and kept me guessing till almost the very end.
I hope we see more of Harrison Vaughan and Bonzo!

Another fantastic read by Keith, honestly his books just grab my attention from the first page. Fantastic writing with an amazing story line.

A gripping who-dun-it style book with added humour and plenty of unexpected surprises. I warmed to the characters right away especially the loveable farting doggy. Gripped the whole way through.

After reading the Gray series I was excited to read more by Keith and I was not disappointed. Thank you for another excellent book Keith!

Thank you Keith Nixon and TBC reviews for the chance to read this book.
