This book was one I've run across many times and actually even recommended by the online Asian web-novel family. Even though I have not read many Korean web-novels, after a long time I thought of giving it a chance. Honestly, I have not felt quite disappointed by a web-novel in rather a long time. In fact maybe due to the fact I put in a lot of thought and research before choosing web-novels and e-books rather than diving head first to the free novels I receive now. If you are reader who has never read historical romance and is a fan of romance without any sense of plot development, maybe this book is for you. Also is this plain old erotica? I thought it was more than that and I feel like I was highly cheated by it. Unfortunately I have to give this a very low rating as nothing actually attracted me to this series. The ML was a playboy and a horrible person and at times I felt like I was reading a rape scene rather than an actual intimate scene. I really do not know why people still write about such chauvinistic characters at this age and time. At least I expected the FL to be a bit more stronger but no, that too was dashed away from me. She started the contract with the clause that she would never fall in love and not even 2 minutes into their marriage we got her fawning over him and being disappointed he did not come to her. I honestly do not like to rant about books as authors put in a lot of thought and care into them and as there is a huge fanbase who actually like this sort of novels. Also as I have only read the first book and to my knowledge there are 6 more parts for this and for me to prematurely rate this book a low rating is actually unfair. Despite that I do not think I have the patience to read the rest of the series and will have to DNF this series. To anyone who does not mind completely and totally overbearing males (not the type that is yandere) and females who are completely bland and stories that has no development whatsoever, give this a try. If not, stay far away from it.
5/13 Update: This might be a long review once I edit it. There's 124 chapters for this webnovel lol
Content warnings: (mention of) infertility, violence, murder, domestic violence (not with the MC/LI), (mention of) incest
I'm doing to start with what I love about the story. For now, it'll be a list.
- Lucia. She manages to be an MC that we expect but much more. - Smolxbig trope. Lucia is a tiny lady. Hugo is significantly bigger than him. Yet it is so precious to see how he brings out the protective nature in him and how she'll easily scold him. - the slowish-burn. Idk what to call it when the romance comes after but the sexual chemistry is there from the start. Regardless of the term, it produced some wonderful angst - Hugo's character development. I don't think that there's any point where he is no longer threatening. But he softens around the edges and gains some emotional knowledge after he marries Lucia. Even his staff notices. It's precious. - Damian! He is such a precious bean. He just wants love and attention. He basically becomes a baby cub when Lucia comes around. I love that the author showed his drive and image being driven by his very child-like instinct to make his father proud. (I cried!) - how much Lucia loves and protects Damian. Compared to his blood-thirsty husband, no one thinks that Lucia is scary. The noblewomen don't take her seriously. But the moment anyone messes with her son, she dismisses all etiquette and steps her foot down. She does not play around. - the family dynamic between Lucia, Hugo, and Damian. - surprisingly lots of smut! XD - the comedy. - Roy Krotin. He is a much-needed comedy relief. His bold nature and ability to treat Hugo almost as an equal, which one one save Lucia does, is so refreshing. He is a wild and unpredictable character. He is also surprisingly sweet and loyal. - - no unnecessary girl-hate. Given the Duke's power and promiscuous nature, I was afraid that the there would be a lot of girl hate and that Lucia would have a hard time making friends. While there was some of this, it made sense within the story and at least one arc was resolved in a positive manner. - tagging on the last point, I loved how Princess Katherine, a supporting character, and Lucia complemented each other very well. They are foils. While the Princess was brought up well-loved, treated, and cared for, she became confident. Meanwhile. Lucia, the forgotten princess, was timid. Princess Katherine is blunt. Lucia plays by society's rules. Yet they get along really well. They do not feel pitied against each other simply because they are bought big figures in society. - the side stories! Damian's SS made me laugh. Chris is a wonderful character. I kind of wish we knew what happened with him. Meanwhile, the last SS made me tear up a bit. - The fourth SS made me also kind of cry. It was just so... fitting and heartwarming.
While there's a lot I really love about Lucia, there are a few things that make me have reservations about recommending it. There are some less than savory topics that, while challenged, are difficult to read. I discussed them below to the best of my abilities without spoiling anything. However, I've added spoiler tags just in case.
One of the things that unsettled me is Hugo's excessive jealousy. Once you understand him and his history, it makes sense. Especially considering the numerous miscommunications between him and Lucia. Still, I think it's important to note that this level of jealousy is not normal *or* healthy. Especially, when said jealousy interferes with Lucia's other relationships. (It doesn't usually but that's because Lucia has scolded Hugo so he knows he shouldn't be unreasonable. He still is at times, though.) Hugo and Lucia's interactions, in other aspects, show a caring and respectful relationship. So I think it's important to address that his jealousy is over the top.
It is important to note that this whole thing is challenged. There is a character that views this as disgusting and immoral. They want no part of it. However, there is another character who views it their life's purpose to make sure that "this thing" happens. It was more the later character's thoughts and actions that I found unsettling.
I think it's important to note, though, that the author doesn't seem to add this for shock value. This plot element plays a huge role in why certain characters' do what they do or did what they did. It fits well within the scope of the story that discusses how one's family history can impact one's life as well as that one doesn't have to make the choices expected of them. The author is not promoting these ideas. I just felt it was important to mention this since future readers may come across this and be affected or triggered.
ML’s family history and Lucia’s dreams had some interesting premises, but they honestly just felt more like plot devices than real parts of the story because of how they were written in. And those repetitive smut chapters just make the whole series super boring. I ended up skipping most of them.
The only thing I really enjoyed was the ML’s inner thoughts and struggles as he learns how to love and be a better partner. So yeah, my rating is basically just for him.
read only if you like reading descriptive painful sex scenes and think vaginal bleeding during intercourse is sexy and have a very narrow understanding of what consent is. i've been told that the webtoon version is better but i can't personally verify that. i do appreciate the translator's hard work and persistence for translating a smut book this book has made me appreciate non smut romances more.
I have completed 6/7 volumes of this series, and I think it is interesting. The structure of the narrative is messy though, but this has a strong emotional thorough line especially at the part when Lucia adopted Hugh’s son. I think the son-mother relationship was convincing and endearing and I enjoyed it the best.
This of course has problematic treatment of themes, like simplification of getting out of abusive relationships, massacre and stuff. This is a childish take on epic fantasy, not really high value. There is excessive sex scenes and while I am not against smut, at one point I did go, oh no they’re going to have sex again, because the sex scenes were just there for reader gratification and not for the enhancement of the story or the characters relationship so there it is haha. I still did like some parts of this.
love love love!! Main character is gentle yet strong, and handles problems in a very satisfying way. Have read through the book multiple times. The love story is also really sweet. The whole thing is an extremely easy read, and I wish the author would continue the story, I was so sad to see the story come to an end (not saying it was an unsatisfying ending, just that the characters were so lovable and the world so fun that I wanted it to continue).
SEGUNDA REVIEW (14.12.24): Essa novel ganhou grande espaço no meu coração.
This is the best book (web novel or not) that I have EVER read!!!!! I had to go lengths to read this!!! It’s translated from Korean and it has everything I want. Historical and Eurocentric based and very very steamy. This review pales in comparison to the book itself!!! I love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
If you're reading this and the male lead pisses you off wait until book5, if you resist the urge to punch him in the face till then, he gets soooo much better I promise.
Very captivating, rich story. I don't know much of the writing, but the translation I had access to was very fluid and yet flaroury. I enjoyed the characters, the environments and the entricate plot. I could do with less sex descriptions, ended up fast forwarding a few scenes.
Along the same lines of Only I Level Up, I started this one because I enjoyed the webtoon and wanted to see what happens next~ I like this one a lot - it's basically a Korean historical romance mixed in with fantasy, and the concept and characters are interesting.
Let me start by saying, the Manwha made the male lead seem so much better. I should have expected to hate this read when I realized the FMC was a virgin and the MMC was a Manwhore. I don’t read that trope EVER! Not anymore! But like damn, he seemed like a pretty okay dude when I didn’t have to be in his head.
I also should have known he would be awful. Because right before finalizing the marriage deal with her. He goes out to fuck one of his many hook ups, (his favorite one) one more time before he has to live a life of loyalty to his soon to be wife Lucia.
By the way when he wants to end things with the women he’s with. Generally the ones who want more than sex, he sends them roses. What a regular Lothario this one is! Yes, I know it was his butler’s idea. No, I don’t really give a fuck, doesn’t make him any less of an asshole.
The first time they have sex he literally can’t stop comparing her to the usual women he’s with. He keeps thinking about why he’s so turned on by her when she’s not even his type???
🤢🤢🤢
Nothing says romantic when the H compares you to all the other woman he’s fucked. Also he’s so rough the first time they have sex she bleeds for several DAYS? Ummm ladies? If you are bleeding that much after having sex something went wrong!! Somethings not right?
It wasn’t good for her either!! She doesn’t want to do it with him after that!! I don’t blame her!! He’s screwed so many woman and still doesn’t know how to do it right???
Goddds I don’t know why I kept reading. It was like watching a train wreck, I couldn’t look away or in this case I couldn’t stop reading. Well that’s a lie I stopped pretty early on but not before getting to the scene that made me officially drop it.
There’s a scene where they are about to have sex in the dining room table, and she tells him to stop and that she doesn’t want to do it there. Unfortunately we are in his head at the time and his thought process goes along the lines of “if it wasn’t the fmc (Lucia) he wouldn’t have stopped.”
Sir? 👁👄👁
You’re saying if it was any other woman you wouldn’t have taken consent into consideration? Basically he would have r worded another woman if it hadn’t been her (Lucia) asking him to stop?
I realized it already, but what a trash Mc??? I should have been prepared because let’s be real a lot of manwha/ manga ( NOT all of them) are written by people who unfortunately have lived their lives in a highly patriarchal society. Sometimes that internalized misogyny just seeps into the work. I’m not saying this about all manwha, manga, etc.So please don’t come at me for saying this.
But I know misogyny when I read it. 🙈🙄
This isn’t romance folks. The label should be taken far far away from this piece of work. My deal is why are so many people hating on Lucia when she’s literally a victim of her abuse and trauma? If you have to hate on a character hate on the MC.
Honestly, I recommend not wasting your time with this novel. If you have to absolutely read this crap read the Manwha. That way you can pretend the Mc isn’t a complete misogynistic prick. You can’t see it if you aren’t stuck in his head. And believe me it’s a terrible place to be.
This is a review for all 8 volumes of the novel series.
This book is always listed on book recommendations but I've always put off reading it because the beginning didn't hold my interest. After many false starts, I finally binged it all, and I absolutely loved it.
There's a lot of hate going on in the more recent reviews possibly about all the love scenes but I wasn't really bothered by them. The two do start off on a rocky foot but even from the beginning, you can see that there is the beginning of love.
If you don't take the sheer volume of their love scenes seriously, there's actually a really interesting story going on. There are romance, mystery, and self-acceptance layers here.
The romance is extremely fatalistic. If you're a fan of things like destiny and the red strings of fate, you'll love this. The tale is mostly grounded in the present but from time to time there are flashbacks of a parallel time. They come in flashes eventually connecting everything to the present. The main pair are quite demonstrative so there are a lot of love scenes.
As for the healing element Lucia brings to the male lead and their son her warmth bringing them together, making them a home, and allowing them to find acceptance of their accursed bloodline. It leads to many heartwarming moments as well as hilarious ones when the general public starts wondering how she managed to tame the two wild beasts.
Two points of contention in this novel are first, the beginning. The main couple start off on the wrong foot sexually and emotionally. It takes some time before their misunderstandings are resolved. This leads to a lot of minor angst moments in the beginning which I personally liked but also found irritating at times. Second are the numerous, detailed love scenes. This could be a love it or hate it situation for many. I liked them in the beginning but think they could've been more abbreviated later on.
Overall, the narrative was easy to follow. The main couple was completely ship-worthy. There was humor, adorable kids and critters, and interesting secondary and minor characters. I have no regrets reading this and might even read it again someday.
I think that if you’re going to read this you have to read more into it to get the full story. This is a smut novel. If anything there was a lot of romance than other smut novels. You’re dealing with a guy who is usually a cold person, but began to warm up to the woman he married to out of a contract she proposed. Some comments here talk about rape, but honestly they both grew to love each other and they were both attracted to each other from the get go. The story has cute aspects as well. I like the sex aspect if anything and the web novel keeps it PG. Can’t handle the smut novel then don’t read :)
I actually encountered the Manhwa adaptation before reading the Novel - because I was eager to know what happens. Overall, the novel is good. However, I felt like there were some items that were missed? One would be, the conflict was not so much a conflict (the incest, blood thingy) I felt like the author could've exploited that angle more. Plus, Damian. His character was so hyped in the middle that I thought he would be of great importance in the latter parts, but apparently, nope.
Would I recommend this? Definitely. It's a good read if you're just a casual reader plus if you're coming from the Manhwa and you want a good description of the rated scenes.
my heart was captured by this story in a unique and beautiful way just like its protagonist .The two main characters have so much potential for a wonderful love story and improvement, but everything is misunderstood because they do not communicate with each other! So far they have only given us small glimpses of their pasts, there is still a long way to go for that long-awaited and well-deserved happy ending .
I was fortunate enough to read a well translated version of this book and I absolutely loved it! The characters were great—especially Lucia (#femaleempowerment)—and the storyline was enjoyable. I would really like to read more of these kinds of books from Korean Authors, but it’s really hard without proper translations out there.
The best parts of this story are not in the beginning. It's when the relationships and secrets are revealed.
The secrets slowly being revealed and the explanation for Lucia's dreams are so fun to read. The characters are also easy love especially Damian and his friend Chris. The side story on how everything began made me cry.
Premise cerita nya lumayan, female lead nya bukan tipikal yg mary sue still loveable dan strong female lead. Dan sepanjang buku 1 ini banyak kipas-kipas nya.
A Korean webnovel - I read a fan translation of it and it was SO GOOD. Lots of juicy, spicy moments and surprisingly a good amount of mystery and a touch of magic in this story and I felt like all the questions I had eventually got answered in ways I wasn't expecting.
