Five bounty-hunting sisters Deep in the heart of the Rockies Fighting to save each other ...and the men who steal their hearts
Bounty hunter Molly Pax fought hard for everything she has, turning the bail recovery business she shares with her sisters into an unqualified success. So when their sticky-fingered mother jumps bail and puts the childhood home up as collateral, Molly's horrified. To make matters worse, every two-bit criminal in the Rockies now sees her family's misfortune as their next big break.
She needs help, stat.
Enter rival bounty hunter John Carmondy: six feet of pure trouble, with a cocky grin to match. John's the most cheerfully, annoyingly gorgeous frenemy Molly's ever had the pleasure of defeating...and he may be her only hope of making it out of this mess alive.
A fan of the old adage “write what you know”, Katie Ruggle lived in an off-grid, solar- and wind-powered house in the Rocky Mountains until her family lured her back to Minnesota. When she’s not writing, Katie rides horses, trains her three dogs, cross-country skis (badly) and travels to warm places where she can scuba dive. A graduate of the Police Academy, Katie received her ice-rescue certification and can attest that the reservoirs in the Colorado mountains really are that cold. A fan of anything that makes her feel like a bad-ass, she has trained in Krav Maga, boxing and gymnastics. I love Katie Ruggle. I was over the moon for her Search and Rescue series. So when I seen In Her Sights on Netgalley and seen it was a start of a new series I was so excited, but this book was such a let down for me. It took me over two weeks to get this book read. I was so bored I kept putting it down and would try again a few days later and get bored within 10 mins of restarting. Top that off with the fact that there was not much romance to speak of and this book fell flat for me. The whole book Molly was prickly and combative. I'm sure it was meant to be cute but it just came off bitchy and annoying. They didn't even share their first kiss til 82% then they jumped straight from their first kiss to one of the flattest sex scenes I have ever read. after that no more real romance just action. Then after failing on the romance front it ends with a cliffhanger and no closures. So as much as I love Katie Ruggle I think I will skip the rest of this series.
Fantastic series starter. Romantic suspense with a family of female bounty hunters. Lots of fun humor and a hero that is simply swoon worthy for his comments and actions. Not everything is wrapped up at the end beyond the specific romance between Molly and John.
It took a bit of time for the plot to develop beyond the five sisters and their interactions with their deadbeat mom, Jane, and the contentious interactions of Molly and John. But once the plot developed, it is clear that Mommy Dearest is a piece of work. These five siblings are supposed to be smart, savvy bounty hunters with their own bond recovery business, but they have no clue as to how to protect their assets. There is no depth here and at times the plot was a bit uneven and jumped from scene to scene with little transition. I am not a fan of single POV and I would have liked input from other characters, especially John. I loved the narrator, Callie Beaulieu, she was fantastic, and I look forward to hearing more from her.
Molly Pax and her four sisters have a bail recovery business because they needed a way to support themselves and make money to save their family home. Business is good and the money and independence isn't bad either. One Little Problem: their deadbeat mom, Jane, had a shaky history with the truth and tends to snatch shiny things. This time she has outdone herself and has but the family home up as her bond security and disappeared. The shady bondsman who wrote her bond is blackmailing Molly into going after a very dangerous skip.
John Carmondy is a pain, as far as Molly is concerned. He is always showing up at exactly the wrong time trying to snatch her skips. He is six feet plus of hot, muscle with the face of a god. A total annoyance, but this time Molly may be able to use that wall of muscle to her advantage when the house keeps getting broken into by her mother's friends looking for the shiny she stole. He could also be useful going after the nasty skip she needs to find. Of course, they both have to avoid getting blown up by said nasty skip, and Molly has to avoid falling in love with John.
Molly is the oldest and has been like a mother to her sisters, since their own mother, Jane, is a very selfish, flighty woman. Jane is something else and she causes a lot of trouble, she ticked me right off! Jane puts the family home up as collateral when she needs to make bail, the home that Molly and her sisters paid off after Jane just about drained it dry with a reverse mortgage. So, yeah, she’s a real winner of a mom.
Now Molly is saddled with locating her mom, and at the mercy of a shady bail bondsman force to catch a dangerous bail skipper or have him start legal proceedings to take their home.
Fortunately, Molly has John Carmondy, a fellow bounty hunter at her back.
This was fun start to Katie Ruggle’s new series about bounty hunter sisters! Molly and John were delightful together! At the beginning Molly views John as a rival bounty hunter, but it’s clear John is very much at her side from the beginning. Molly’s not sure why he’s stuck to her like glue and she’s at first distrustful and a bit snarky to him, but John has so much fun with her snips and snipes. He’s all easy going with playful, flirtatious grins, letting whatever barbs Molly sends flying amuse and encourage his pursuit.
The fun is interspersed with tension, action and danger, as Molly and John pursue their skip, a dangerous criminal fond of explosives. I appreciated that Molly always had a plan and didn’t have any TSTL moments. John and Molly made an excellent team, always backing each other up, but Molly’s sisters are a force to be reckoned with, too. I expect each additional book to feature a different sister.
Molly and John’s romance wrapped up sweetly, but the problems caused by the mom’s criminal activities were not. I think Cara’s story is up next as the efforts to disentangle themselves from Jane continue. A copy was kindly provided by Sourcebooks Casablanca in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve not read anything by this author before, so I was pleased to be able to jump into a new series. The Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters are a group of five sisters, the eldest of whom, Molly, has been as much of a mother as a sister to her siblings owing to the irresponsible nature of their actual mother, Jane. All the sisters work as bail enforcement agents – bounty hunters – and In Her Sights opens as Molly Pax – the eldest – is interrupted in her surveillance of her current target by the unexpected and unwanted presence of the ridiculously pretty and ridiculously annoying John Carmondy, a fellow bounty hunter who wants Molly and her sisters to come and work for him.
John is always bright and breezy, his flirtatious grins and quips stirring the attraction Molly feels for him but ruthlessly keeps a lid on; the problem here is that she keeps a lid on it for rather too long, because there’s no real progression in the romance until over three-quarters of the way through the book – John and Molly don’t even kiss until the 80% mark, and the sex scene that follows was strangely flat.
The plot concerning the Pax ladies’ struggle to extricate themselves from their mother’s mess – she puts their home up as collateral and then skips bail - is entertaining, but is not concluded here, so I guess it’s going to run through the series. I liked the relationship between the sisters, but the plot whereby Molly and John chase down a bail-jumper was fairly run-of-the-mill and not all that suspenseful. John isn’t a particularly well-drawn character; he’s funny and he’s cute, but we don’t get to know much more about him other than that he’s a goner for Molly and everyone can see that but her; and Jane is a one-note villain.
I enjoy romantic suspense, so I might give this author another try, but I think I’ll find something from her backlist, because if the rest of this series runs along the same lines as this one, I don’t think it’s for me.
As the caretaker of a dysfunctional family, Molly Pax handles it all: her sisters, the her manipulative mother and the very annoying (but hot) John Carmondy who can’t seem to leave her alone even though they’re both career-rivals.
I didn’t know what to expect from Katie Ruggle’s new series—my experience with Ruggles’s writing has been varied—but bounty hunting sisters finding their HEA sounded like a unique-enough premise to branch out from her Rocky Mountain books.
There was more quirk and light-heartedness than I thought for an RS book and much of the drama—to my disappointment—for at least halfway, dealt with the Pax sisters’ panic about their mother’s shenanigans and the fear of losing their house as John played a longing, moony sidekick role at the fringe. I started skimming a lot as the investigation went seemingly in circles and Molly/John’s relationship development felt more like a slow burn that had me struggling to keep my interest up. That there wasn’t a point in time I wanted to re-read what I’d missed was probably a warning red flag hoisted high about my boredom levels.
The bottomline is, I wish I were more excited about the start of Ruggle’s new series. I do like Ruggle’s writing style and her protagonists by and large (which is why I do keep coming back to her books from time to time) but the plot however, wasn’t just something I could be enthusiastic about in this mild enemies-to-lovers type story. It’s also more romantic-suspense-lite and strangely more family-friendly, so ‘In Her Sights’ is probably a book more suited to those who prefer to keep just their toes in the genre.
So I'm a huge fan of this authors work and couldn't wait to dive into this the first book about a family of bounty hunters. Molly is the eldest sister and from a young age has generally known that her mother is a waste of space. She's a petty criminal, a serial user when it comes to men and now someone who has jumped bail leaving Molly and her sisters to pick up the pieces. As if that wasn't enough to contend with Molly keeps tripping over John a rival bounty hunter who seems determined to stay by her side. Chasing criminals is the least of Molly's worries though as its soon pretty clear that her mother has left the family with far more problems than they ever expected ! Ok this author excels at giving readers interesting, ever so slightly quirky characters and this family of females is no exception. I thought the idea of making them bounty hunters interesting but as they feel so very young I'm not sure how effective the young women would actually be. Yet it did capture my imagination and I enjoyed the build up and odd shenanigans happening along the way. I have a problem though with the romance which really didn't go anywhere until about eighty percent of the story had happened. I'm not a fan of instant romance but this just felt too dragged out and made Molly appear the exact opposite of sharp ! I didn't really detect any chemistry between the couple and wish John had been much more well, honest. This story does have some resolution but the overall story is far from over. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Why on earth Molly was hating on John I do not know, he was like a sweet teddybear that did everything to protect her. Just let him do it!
And with that I will begin. So my previous Ruggle books have been great, this one was still good, but I guess the couple did not sizzle like previous ones. Mostly cos she tried to get away from him and then suddenly she loved him and like a day had passed. Oh well, it was still fun!
5 sisters. They are bounty hunters. Their mother is a petty criminal and soon she is in trouble. Ugh, what a mother!!! I really hate her. And then sisters have to find her and clear this mess, and catch the biggest bounty of them all.
Molly is the one taking charge. And she crosses paths with her enemy John who is also a bounty hunter. But omg this guy, sweetie! He does all he can to help her.
Explosions, falling in love and catching bad guys. That sums it up. And sisters that hold together no matter what.
Narration I have listened to her do Ruggle books before and I like her with them. She does them well and get the feel of intensity.
In Her Sights by Katie Ruggle is the first book in her new series and was a wild ride from the beginning.
Five sisters who are bounty hunters are some of the strongest heroines that Ms. Ruggle has written to date. Each one of the sisters contributes to the business by using their personal strengths. Ms. Ruggle used this book to set the stage and introduce each sister as well as John Carmody, a rival bounty hunter, who is extremely interested in the eldest sister, Molly. The plot is swiftly paced, the characters are well developed for a first book and each one of them are very likable. Molly and John have a slow burn relationship in this one that eventually culminates in the ultimate explosion. I was hooked from the first page and read this book in one afternoon. I've never been disappointed by Ms. Ruggle and can't wait for the next book in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.
I love good action adventure rom-coms (that's the cinematic genre my husband and I always choose for our date-movie nights!), and this is the best one I've read in novel form for a long time. It's theoretically a rivals-to-lovers romance - at least from the heroine's perspective - but as the heroine's younger sisters have been trying to tell her for a LONG time, her biggest rival in the bounty hunting business has been head-over-heels for her for years...and when things go wrong for her family, he's immediately ready to help in every way possible, with a ton of fantastic banter, fun action scenes, and flirting along the way.
I'm a sucker for good literary families, too, and I loved the heroine's whole family...at least, in her own generation. With a hopelessly irresponsible (and criminal) mother, the heroine's been actively looking after her younger sisters ever since she was a child, and now they all work together in a family business, with a wonderful dynamic that reminded me (in the best possible way) of the Baylor family in Ilona Andrews's Hidden Legacy series. I adored the interactions among the sisters, and I loved how the hero ended up getting adopted into their family...and just how much fun the hero and heroine had with each other. There's a great moment where she finally admits to herself that she's not all that surprised that he makes her perfect partner after all, because even in the past, back when she thought he was her rival:
"They argued and teased and laughed and stole each other's skips, but they also watched each other's back and took care of each other."
It is such a great dynamic!
I read this one as a library book, but I'm now planning to buy myself a copy for comfort re-reads - and I'm moving directly on to Book 2 (starring one of the younger sisters).
Since reading the Search and Rescue and Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series Katie Ruggle has been on my auto buy list. I love that her stories all have strong female leads, real alpha guys who don’t have to throw their weight or their wealth around to prove their manliness and there’s always romance, laughs and a good dose of mystery to keep things lively.
Sadly, I think my expectations were just too high for this new series :( Overall the book was good. It still piqued my interest for the rest of the sisters and I’m curious to see how the whole mom thing gets resolved but (and I hate to say it!) I was bored. Molly and John sounded great in the blurb but their romance was so slow burn that it sputtered out a few times. It was really hard to keep reading when a lot of the page time was dedicated to Molly’s inner dialogue about her mom and sisters, the panic of the other four sisters over the same thing and clues that just lead everyone in circles. The story lost a lot of momentum on the mystery/suspense part and the romance was almost none existent.
It took me almost 2 weeks to read this one and with book 2 already on my nightstand, I’m really hoping the next one will be better. I’m not giving up hope just yet on this series.
Why has it taken me so long to realize that Katie Ruggle is one of my favorite authors? I'm absolutely baffled about this. I have never once been disappointed with one of her romantic suspense novels and In Her Sights might take the cake as my all-time favorite. A family of bounty hunting sisters are sure to get themselves in a whole lot of trouble.
The thing I absolutely adore about Katie Ruggle novels (In Her Sights included) is that her characters are so real. I mean, for god's sake, this is a story about a bounty hunters falling in love and I still felt like they could be people I'd meet on the street... and want to be friends with! The story-telling and dialogue you're getting from a Katie Ruggle novel are top notch.
Molly Pax is a delightful heroine. With her character you're in for some grade-A sarcasm, some kick-ass tackle scenes, and freaking adorable inner monologue. I cannot wait for the story to focus on her equally awesome sisters. Hell, I think half my fantasies about this book were about my wishing I was a part of such a hilarious family.
John Carmondy brought to the table some sexy comebacks, witty dialogue, and a well-described figure. Tall, buff, and dorky. I can die happy after being introduced to him. He was the perfect match for the independent, cautious Molly because he didn't want to force her to change careers or be more stereo-typically feminine... he just wanted her--and maybe he wanted her as a business partner, too.
In Her Sights is packed full of intense chase scenes, hot make outs, and lots--and I mean lots--of attempted burglaries. A 12 million dollar theft always brings out the worst sorts of people. I was laughing, even as my anxiety reached new heights at some of these scenarios.
I'm telling you... if romantic suspense is your thing then you're going to absolutely love the start to this new series! I can't wait for the second! In Her Sights is out February 15th! Pre-order it today!

This was a fun and riveting start to a new series. One of those “whatever can go wrong, will” kind. Molly was the sister who kept things organized and flowing, shouldering the burdens brought on by their bounty hunting job and their worthless mother. Enter John. He’s laid back and sexy, enough to put Molly on edge and questioning his motives. Their romance built so slowly that I thought it may be a suspense novel with romantic elements – but they finally found time in between crooks and bombs, to get together. Nicely done and while not overly explicit, it fit perfectly with the feel of the story. They made a matching couple, both strong and capable, yet able to lean on each other when needed. Thankfully John had the patience of a saint to put up with Molly and her quirky family. The author made the hunt for clues fun and the explosive danger interspersed nicely with the romance. The teaser at the end has me impatient for book two.

There are two plots woven in this book. One is Jane, the mother of the sisters, has allegedly committed a burglary as well as complicit with stealing Molly's car. This plot looks like it's going to be carried over through the series and was unresolved. Plus not much happened on this plot.
The main plot was setting up Molly and John to work together to catch a bail jumper.
But mostly it seemed like a lot of uninteresting stuff. I really couldn't get into the family nicknames, the dialogue or the banter between Molly and John.
In Her Sights is the first in the Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters series. Molly and her four sisters run a bounty hunter business. When their Mom gets in trouble and jumps bail, they’re on the case. Fast paced action from the start had me quickly turning the pages. Molly & John’s chemistry leaps of the pages. If In Her Sights is any indication of the series, the rest will be fantastic. Just one more reason that I’m a Katie Ruggle fan for life!
I have a deep, deep love for clueless dudes who suddenly realize the perfect person for them is the one who's been standing in front of them the entire time. As it turns out, I also love the clueless ladies. WHO KNEW?!?!
Molly has NO CLUE Carmondy's sudden appearances while she's on jobs are anything more than him trying to (a) recruit her to work with him or (b) steal her skip. No idea. She's gloriously oblivious even when it's pointed out to her. Literally everyone except her sees it, but she just keeps thinking the simmering attraction is completely on her part and she needed to keep things vaguely professional (if not a little snarky) between them.
HA. Yeah, no. That didn't work so well. Mostly because John's a sweet puppy of a man who wants nothing more than to make sure Molly is safe. He also has stellar intimidating glares that he uses to his (and Molly's) advantage. He quite literally has her back when she's only used to relying on her sisters and watching Molly slowly realize that she trusts him as much as she trusts her siblings is kinda awesome.
Between the simmering sexual tension, we got some great groundwork for the series (Mama Pax is all sorts of bad news and the situation she's put her children is succcccckkkkks. Hard.). With bad guys after the Pax sisters thanks to Mama Pax's shenanigans, there looks to be plenty of danger ahead for everyone.
But, hey! What's a heist and peripheral danger to family, right? Seriously, Mama Pax is awful and I can't wait to see where this series goes.
DNF ing this one at 38%. It isn't bad, it just isn't great. It is a bit more silly-goofy than the Search and Rescue or Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series, which I highly enjoyed. It is also oddly similar to her The Scenic Route book, which is throwing me for a loop. Bounty hunting sisters, Mom goes on the run after a big heist and they need to track her down but in order to do so they have other bounties to catch to get more information. In this book, same as The Scenic Route, the FMC pairs up with the MMC (another bounty hunter) to catch a sketchy bounty. If these weren't by the same author, I'd be quite concerned about how similar they are.
Skip your bail and you'll never know what hit you when these Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters cuff you and march you to the nearest police station. I thought the premise of five bounty hunting sisters and their romances to be a great formula for a new series and I was right.
Molly Pax with her plans A through D couldn't plan for what brought her to accepting irritating and attractive fellow bounty hunter, John Carmody, on as her partner. Molly has grown up raising her sisters, doing her best to keep a roof over their head, food in their mouths, and safety from what their waste of good oxygen, serial marrying and divorcing, petty crook mother brings into their lives. They've all enabled her, but this time Jane has gone too far when she stole money, car, and a priceless necklace, put the deed for the house up for bond, and skipped out. The slimy bailbondsman with the deed insists they go after a deadly killer in exchange for him not taking the house immediately. Molly has had an itch about John Carmody since their earliest encounters. She says its because she can't stand him, but from his big smile and her sisters' eye rolls apparently she's only fooling herself. But, her pride and her desperation to save their home and family business don't make her stupid so Molly reluctantly takes the help that John is offering. All her life, she has only ever been able to depend on herself and her sisters, but now she sees that she might have a good thing with her knew partner in more ways than one if she can allow herself to trust.
In Her Sights has a light, quirky tone along with some good romantic suspense elements. I enjoyed the sisterly dynamics and loved to hate their mother, Jane. Molly is big sister and feels responsible for everything though she is slowly learning that the others are now adults and she needs to trust them to do their jobs and stay safe. Molly had to grow up fast and hard so it makes sense that she is somewhat hostile toward John for a while even after he proved himself. He's totally into her and she's the only one blind to this. Even the family dog gets it.
This is strong on the romance, but the catalyst for all that happens is the suspense element of the trouble their mom caused by the big theft and also robbing them blind before disappearing. I'm guessing the situation with Jane is going to be a series plot piece. Meanwhile, there was a secondary suspense thread of Molly and John hunting down a repeat criminal who tends to blow things and people up and Molly is blackmailed into going after him. The action sequences of the chase were good.
The intro to the sisters and the family situation have me eager to press forward to the rest of the series as each sister gets her story. I was definitely hooked by the epilogue teaser at the end of In Her Sights that gives a peek into Cara's story with that little cliffie.
On a side note, the Turn the Tide anthology, which is free, has a prequel novella from the author that tells the story of Molly and John's meet cute and introduces the sisters and this series. The story is briefly referenced as a quick shared memory in In Her Sights. It isn't necessary to read it first, but it was definitely fun and not to be missed if you want more of the sisters and John.
All in all, this latest series opener and series looks to be a fun addition to the author's repertoire and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to those who enjoy light romantic suspense.
My thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Molly Pax is doing her best to keep her family bail recovery business in the black. Two major issue are other bail bondsmen trying to hone in on her skips. More importantly, however, is trying to deal with her criminal mother Jane. Along with her four sisters, Molly is now in a very tough situation. Jane has committed a huge theft, was caught and arrested, and has skipped bail. Unknowingly, Jane managed to put the family home up as collateral, leaving the girls in dire straits.
When John Carmondy offers his assistance, Molly is perturbed. On the one hand, he is more than amenable. On the other hand, is is too sexy for his own good and has always gotten underneath Molly's skin. Their relationship may be a bit rocky, but it certainly sets of sparks. Will Molly be able to prioritize their current bond and work with John, all the while work hard to find Jane before her upcoming court case and thus keep their home from being lost to another bondsman?
While not as sharp as some other romantic suspense books I have read, In Her Sights was a good start to a promising new series by Katie Ruggle, an author new to me. The story had some humor, action and a bit of danger. I was very happy to go on to the second book in the series and looked forward to each Max sister get her own story.
Her mother jumps bail, her childhood home has been put up for collateral and every two-bit criminal in the Rockies now sees her family’s misfortune as their next big break. Molly needs help, stat in this refreshingly different and wild ride of a thrilling romance. Molly and John are two strong, vivid characters that seem to rub each other the wrong way but really have some uber powerful chemistry that has sparks flying in every direction. Molly is a strong, take charge character that is quite clueless when it comes to recognizing why John is around every time she turns around which makes this growing relationship a delight to read. The dialogue throughout the story includes snark and sass which adds some chuckles to the entertainment.
The story is fast paced and full of exhilarating action and thrilling suspense as Molly and John go after a dangerous skip that has bombs exploding and surprising twists taking everyone by surprise. Readers can’t help but enjoy the family dynamic between Molly and her sisters and the fact that they are female bounty hunters adds to the intrigue of this story while the relationship between Molly and John charms and delights readers while ensuring that they want to know every last detail of this wild ride.
Molly Pax and her four sisters run a bounty hunting business. Molly's arch enemy is Jon Carmondy, a fellow bounty hunter and all round pain in her ass. He pops up everywhere she goes, being charming and twinkling his eyes at her while stealing her bountys.
But when Molly's ne'er do well mother gets arrested for grand larceny and puts up the house that Molly and her sisters paid for Molly is faced with an unpalatable proposition, lose the house to a slimy bail-bondsman or agree to capture a psychotic killer who likes to play with explosives.
This was reminiscent of all the good things about Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series without the love triangle and irritating granny humour, okay it's about a female bounty hunter.
I liked this, it was fast-paced, didn't take itself too seriously, Molly and her sisters got into bounty hunting simply because after a life of watching their mother being arrested and jailed for various minor offenses they knew the system very well.
My only criticism is that no-one was really developed as a character, it's all action and no back-story, especially John who is just there to add romance and muscle, but it was a great read by the pool.
I am an unapologetic Katie Ruggle superfan. Her action, humor, and heart laced books always leave me with the biggest smile on my face. IN HER SIGHTS is no exception! It combines everything you love about a Katie Ruggle novel with masterful world building for a brand new series. I am in awe.
IN HER SIGHTS follows Molly, the eldest of five bounty hunting sisters with a criminal mother, and John Carmondy (I feel the need to type his whole name because Molly uses his last name more than his first), a rival bounty hunter and one of my new favorite heroes.
Katie Ruggle knows how to write an excellent hero and John Carmondy is keeps that standard high. I am more than a little in love with him after reading this book, it’s no wonder Molly couldn’t resist him. I am such a sucker for a hero who is hopelessly devoted the heroine, and this whole book was basically John waiting for Molly to notice him in a real way. It’s super cute and you’re rooting for them the entire time. The witty banter and sexual tension in this book are top notch.
As with all Katie Ruggle novels, I wish there was more emphasis on the romance. By that I mean, I just wanted the book to be longer! I think the plot is perfectly paced, but I am always left wanting more of the central couple.
Overall, I thought this was an excellent first book in a series, and I can’t wait to see where the overarching mystery goes as well as watch all these sisters find their perfect partner. I want more!!
Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I enjoy everything I've read by Katie Ruggle, which is mostly romantic suspense. In Her Sights starts off a new series, Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters. There is a free anthology, Turn the Tide, which includes an introduction to the series, Any Necessary Force, which I really wish I had read first. *OK I read it last night and it doesn't help with the issue I had.*
I felt a little lost initially dropped into this world and the prequel could have helped. The romance here is the part which troubled me as it seemed to happen too quickly. In Her Sights makes it seem like they have been acquaintances for awhile. The prequel makes it clear they have just barely met. Possibly, I was just more absorbed in the action and mystery.
Quickly, it becomes clear Molly keeps a tight rein on herself, as she has been hurt too many times. She doesn't have any time for herself as she has to keep the business running and support her family. So possibly she was just too busy with her family and business to realize who John was and how he felt about her.
We don't get to see much of John's inner thought process so he seems a little too good to be true so it's not surprising Molly can't believe he likes her. On the other hand, her mother is a little too bad to be true. So some of the characters are not quite believable. As we get to know the main ones though, they become more authentic.
While it seems there will be a new couple in each book, but some of the overall story arc of the business and cases will carry through the series. I'll be looking forward to more in this action-packed series in a gorgeous Rocky Mountain setting.
Narration: I listened at my usual 1.5x speed but it took me awhile to settle into this narration. I have listened to her before and it was on other books by Katie Ruggle. Somehow, the voice for Molly sounded too old? It's one of my things sometimes but by the end I was comfortable. The narration of both male and female voices was well performed, with some variation for each person. The performance did add to the emotional feelings and increased my enjoyment.
I really enjoyed Katie Ruggle’s stories, but this new series brings a fresh, new twist.
In Her Sights is the first of a new series which features five sisters who, despite their criminal (and criminally negligent) mother are in the bounty hunter business. Molly Pax is the oldest and the one who actually takes down the criminals. Her sisters support her with research and stake outs but most of the fence jumping and criminal tackling comes down to Molly herself.
Molly’s mother goes from one husband to the next until they get tired of her lies and manipulation. If she is between husbands, she manages to get caught for petty crimes so much so that she has gone through most of the lawyers and public defenders in town. Regardless, the girls have managed to pay off the mortgage themselves to keep a roof over their heads.
John Carmondy is the bane of Molly’s existence. He’s a hot, sexy competitor of Molly’s and she likes nothing more than to grab John’s skips out from under him. She is especially annoyed to find John always hanging around trying to grab her skips. No matter how much teasing she gets from her sisters, Molly doesn’t seem to get that John’s interest has less to do with grabbing skips than protecting Molly from getting hurt.
One of the local bail bondman is trying to get Molly to pick up a rather dangerous felon, a guy with a love of explosives. Molly and her sisters keep hanging up on him because they know better than to tangle with the likes of Sonny Zarver.
Things are going well for the sisters and their growing business until once again, Jane, gets arrested but this time for trying to steal a multi-million dollar necklace. Jane is going to face some real jail time over this offense and Molly can’t imagine how her mother could have gotten herself bailed out of jail. Until she gets an offer she can’t refuse, chase down Sonny Zarver and bring him in or the sleazy bail bondsman is going to have Jane’s trial date moved up and it looks like Jane is already in the wind. Molly wouldn’t care except that Jane put up the house they worked so hard to payoff as collateral and if Jane doesn’t show for her next court appearance, they lose everything they have been working so hard for.
While Molly has not idea why John is insisting on helping her track down Sonny, she won’t argue since her chance of surviving to bring Sonny in on her own is not very good. She needs all the help she can get, since her sisters are slip between helping her and finding their mom.
It also appears that John isn’t such a jerk after all and the longer they work together, the more interested Molly is in getting to know John and his perfect physique better.
It took me awhile to get over my anger of why anyone would payoff a mortgage for a house they didn’t own. In fact, I was almost surprised that the mother didn’t sell the house out from under them when she had the chance. The property abuts a national park and she would probably net more money selling the house than her cut from the heist.
I was entertained by how dense Molly was to John’s very clear interest in her and even her sister’s constant comments didn’t get through.
This was a fun group of characters. We were mostly focused on catching Sonny and finding Jane will be part of the remainder of the series I am certain. It was nice to get out of the snow trapped mountains of her previous stories. I was starting to get frostbite from the constant snowfall. It is not surprising that the characters in her other books had a touch of snow madness from being quite literally trapped in those small towns when the roads out became impassible.
This is the first Katie Ruggle series that I listened to rather than read, and the narrator did a nice job keep the characters exciting.
Received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review. I had not heard about this series but I do love this authors other series and when this one came across my review feed, I didn't even think about it, I knew I wanted to read it. Molly Pax and her four sisters are bounty hunters trying to keep their business alive and keep their mother out of jail because she is using them for money, a free place to stay or a guilt trip any chance she can. Then there is the slimy bail-bondsman who wants Molly to catch a bail jumper. And he will use anything he can, and what her mother gave him to post her bail. Molly only has one chose, to catch the jumper or lose what her and her sisters have. And you can't forget John Carmondy, a rival bounty hunter that seems to turn up each time Molly is working and close to catching a jumper. While Molly thinks her is trying to steal her bail jumpers, he has another thing in mind. John wants to get to know Molly better and in a more personal way. Will Molly and her sisters find Sonny, the bail jumper, in time or lose it all? Can she trust John to help or will he steal her jumper? Can they trust her mother to return in time to set the record straight? Will there be a future for Molly and John? This is a great beginning to a new series that gives you the insight to the sisters and what the do and a little about how their life is. And don't forget that ending, wow what is going to happen. I need the next book now. Katie Ruggle usually has strong alpha males and women who love them in her stories and this series has strong females and the men they claim, which at times they clash but it makes the story even better. So read this new series and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
In Her Sights is the first book in the Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters series by Katie Ruggle. The series will be focused on the Pax sisters, their work as bounty hunters and how they will find love. The story doesn't end with this book and it will probably take all 5 books to get closure. The blurb covers up what is happening in the book very well, so I won't add anything else on that front.
I have read a few of Katie Ruggle's books, so it was no question whether or not I would pick this one up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with what I got. I found the book to be a little boring the romance was non-existent. The genre felt more like Suspense rather than Romantic Suspense which is the category the book is listed under. I would have liked to have some scenes with Molly and John where they start to build the ground for their relationship. At least I got a good idea about the rest of the sisters and that's a plus because they will be the next heroines.
In Her Sights gave the series a rocky start (I am sorry for the bad pun) and it made me a little reluctant to continue reading the series. Since I already that the arc for the second book, I was "forced" to read the second book and it was an improvement from this one, so I would recommend giving that book a try if you didn't like this one.
I enjoyed this book by Katie Ruggle, especially the premise of the five sisters who work together to run a bounty hunting agency. All five sisters are interesting, each in her own way, and I look forward to seeing them again in future books.
I felt like the romance took a back seat more in this book than in most of Ruggle's other books. John was a good character, and it was obvious that he was head over heels for Molly, but she took way too long to catch up. That made the romance aspect seem a bit weak to me.
This romantic suspense had plenty of exciting action and I always like when the male pursues the female but I didn't care for the heroine. She was rather nasty to the hero most of the book. It got heavy on characters thoughts and I skimmed some. While bounty hunter Molly is on stakeout she encounters rival bounty hunter John.
I like KR's other series, and this one is much lighter. It's more like a Stephanie Plum story where she actually gets to have sex with Ranger in the first book. Add 4 sisters and you've almost got a rom-com. It was a bit too much snark and too little sex for me, but it was fun.
