Myth and Mankind

Titans and Olympians: Greek and Roman Myth

The ancient Greeks and Romans created two of the most incredible and enduring cultures known to humanity. They also created a pantheon of gods and a rich body of mythology that has survived for centuries. Among these powerful myths is the story of Athena, the goddess of battle, who sprang from Zeus's head, and the story of Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility, whose worshippers achieved a state of mad ecstasy.

These fantastic stories are captured in Iitans and Olympians: Greek and Roman Myth, an exciting new volume in a series called Myth and Mankind. The series provides a fascinating, culture-by-culture examination of world myth and its historical roots. Whether exploring the legends of Germany, Egypt, Tibet or Greece, each book brings an ancient culture to live through myth.

These are the greatest stories ever told, stories so powerful and unforgettable that they have been recounted for centuries. Who could forget the story of Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, whose marriage to the unwilling Persephone creates the seasons?

Titans and Olympians: Green and Roman Myths in the Myth and Mankind series by Time-Life books (1997) is a competent introduction to many of the major Greek and Roman myths with stunning photos of art works to support the verbal narrative from that time period. It is not startling; there are no new interpretations or discoveries; but it provides an accessible narrative of the stories from the period. There is even a brief "how it influences us, still, today" legacy section. It provides an adequate review or introduction to the religion of the period. The gorgeous photos make it more attractive to read.

This was another in the Time-Life world myth series. It was a rough overview of the classic Greek and Roman deities and their place in history. It was interesting, but far from comprehensive. It would be a good introduction for someone who was completely unfamiliar with these myths. These books follow a very specific format so they are always restricted by that.

Not bad, but there are better overviews to Greek mythology.
