Daughter of Darkness #3

Ame and the Tangy Energetic

Rate this book
This is a story about friendship and tragedy in the overshadow of an American city. Two brothers, three sisters, and a kid named Go. Fighting. Seeking. Looking after one another. Outsiders, doing what they can to survive. Kell has gone missing. Trust has been decimated yet loyalty runs deep. Ame searches for her little sister in all the strange places a junky might hide, painting landscapes of identity in a world gone mad, where social fabric spills off counters in thrift stores on deep discount.

This is a story about the lost and found. Alchemy and the turning of fear into vitality. Being real no matter what, even when you look bad. Colorful, in black and white. Fiction not fantasy. This is a story about heartbreak and redemption. About caring in a careless world. An oddity, out of step from mainstream literature, found its own rules and rhythm, placed into circulation by one who lives to tell.

I am probably too many years past the situations faced by characters in this book. While I can say I may have done a few of the things they have done, it's been a long time ago. It makes it difficult for me to identify with somewhat picaresque types. So it's difficult for me to honestly say I like the book, I can say there is some artful and inventive writing here defining a milieu I can still imagine. I've been poor but never living on the street. I've done drugs but they've never seriously hung me up. For you, this may be an entertaining visit to a world you've once visited OR never did and are happy not. Katya Mills can string lots of dialogue and narrative together to describe the desperation and the persistence of people. People, in this book, who also have some supernatural abilities--perhaps, or some intriguing delusions. Take a look inside the book to see if it's for you.

Katya Mills comes on like Douglas Coupland's pill-addled street scion in this skid row helter skelter psychic tumble through a downtown United States of Imagica.

Ame & The Tangy Energetic rails against the sheen and shite of corporate pop culture and captures both the hyperreality and the blur of the high, the bleed-out of the sidewalk comedown.

Mills will dose your soda with her magical, druggy, otherworldly cocktail when you ain't looking.

A tale of getting clean, with washing machines.

(Also well worth checking out are Katya's YouTube readings of 'Ame...')

A fab novel

A fine addition to Mills' series, elements of this novel are told from an outsider perspective, enabling the reader to get a good grounding of this world without the need to read previous books. A great read.

This story takes us to meet a girl who runs away and has problems with certain substances. Throughout the trip we accompany her we can see the contrast between the world as these people see it and the other reality, the "ordinaries" who rather They are people who have no problem with these substances, however, they have a terrible obsession with their phones, television, work, hooked on other types of addictions.

The author immerses us from a unique perspective in a story that gives us a lot to reflect on because we see first-hand the world in which people with strong addictions to different substances sink and how they live with it, the narrative in general was good, well yes manages to immerse you in the story completely.

As for the characters, I didn't feel that they were as memorable, but they worked well for this story, although I would have liked to see more depth in them.

Overall an interesting book, quick and easy to read, a light read with a strong theme that shows an interesting perspective.

Within the pages of a fantastical world, "Ame and the Tangy Energetic" tells the captivating journey of two friends, Ame and Kill. The narrative is immersed in the gripping challenges that characters face. Addiction, self-discovery, and the resilience required to navigate the complexities of life are explored skillfully by the novel. As I found my way through this book, I discovered myself attempting to compare it to something in memory. Holden Caulfield, catching lost souls in the rye? Sylvia Plath, perhaps, trapped inside a jar of some sort? This is a novel, written in first person, from the perspective of a runaway in Oakland, California, a displaced person who is strung out on oxy, or Percocet, or whatever she can lay her hands on from a dealer named Black. She arrived in her present location having stolen a vehicle, an Escalade, and driven from Texas. She keeps a relationship of sorts with a few acquaintances - Ame, Maze, and a runaway sister gone missing, by the name of Kell.

The entire novel is stream of consciousness, composed through the eyes of a very imaginative and clever mind, but often difficult to follow, and I think purposefully so. The following is a sample of the narrator's attempt to differentiate herself from those whom she refers to as "the Ordinaries"
(presumably those not on drugs)

Back into the bigger, surprisingly softer world of Ordinaries. Not everyone is blissed out. Most
are chained to their cell phones, huddled over them while walking, standing, sitting, curled
around them when lying down, deep in thought or not, faces frontlit by pocket novel screens
backlit by Tokyo, talking to themselves or not, bipolars at the lower pole, depressives, in steady
chosen isolation, manics unwavering and casting along under the spell of personal renditions of
reality, fording prescribed medication streams, no less preoccupied than anyone else on a cell
phone...

Yes, the entire book reads this way. It's an immersion experience into the eyes of a narrator who, like some Salinger or Plath character, sees the world from an entirely unique perspective.

Exciting story revolving between two friends AME and KILL. KILL is a drug adidect who was caught by a drug dealer, then trying to break free from her captor to return to her friends, she find a way to heal from her ediction and imprase herself into becoming the person she wanted to be but was scared to dare becoming.

When AME lost track of her friend, she received an info that KILL was kidnapped or worse, and became determind to find her friend, but her journey was not easy, she lost her love, her other friend and nearly herself. Hollow feelings was creaping inside AME stripping her from who she was, and her only hope was to hold on to the people who she loves and depends on her.

This novel although a fantasy but the auther writing style made it poetic. The struggle of main characters who feel bitter and sad but longing for happiness was facinating to read.

Thanks to the author for taking us into this journey of healing and good luck on her other projects

Like the last book that I read by this author, this felt like a pretty intense read, but I liked it. I liked the fact that I had the perspective of both the protagonists, and I felt as though I got to know each character quite well, during the time I was reading.

For me, something about the narration felt intimate, as though I was reading someone's diary, or having a deep conversation with a friend. I think the author writes in a way that makes the reader feel connected to the characters, and aware of their emotions and experiences. While I was reading, I cared about these characters and their story.

Makes no sense

I hated everything about this book. The writing was horrible. The story made no sense. There was no plot to follow. This is just one bad trip in written form.

This book takes you to an imaginative future with relatable characters and thought-provoking themes. While the story is generally engaging, its also unique and has familiar sci-fi patterns. The writing is easy to understand for all readers. While i am not much into these types of books, i definitely enjoyed it:) Overall, this book is a solid read and will definitely recommend to others especially those interested in this genre:)
