The Disciples of the Draasin Lord have again been defeated, yet a traitor remains within Terndahl. The Inquisitors have come, and their presence has everyone on edge.
With the help of the Keystone, Tolan has discovered the ability to shape each of the element bonds. Now that he’s passed testing to the second level at the Academy, he finally feels as if he belongs.
Still, he can’t shake the feeling that his shaping is different than others—and tied to the elementals. Discovering the reason why leads him to ask dangerous questions. Between that and knowing someone works against the Academy, Tolan finds himself in the middle of a dangerous plot on the Academy itself.
Only this time, with Inquisitors involved, he might not be able to escape.
With his series, I am not sure that the titles are designed with the book in mind. There was no water rupturing that I saw. It’s like Holmberg decided to name each book for an elemental and does so, and the story goes its separate way.
How can something be "annoyingly the best?" Well when it is a decent story that can sort of pull you in and run you along reader speed bumps in the forms of bad editing, continuity errors, missing or drifting subplots, and characters who contradict for the sake of contradiction, and oh yeah the title doesn't even apply to the story. I have to admit that the actual act of using the magic system is a bit more descriptive this go around and I think that is what earns it a third star. This is the best book of the series partly because there wasn't nearly as much naval gazing and bad back and forth dialogue. It is an interesting story series that has all the hallmarks of an author who has decided that quantity is superior to quality. So it's better to keep pumping out books rather than making good books great.
With the skill that the author obviously has the atrociously poor editing, content editing particularly, makes what could easily be a five-star series into a three-star porting on two star series. I'm thinking the author wrote this book while he was also writing other books coming back to the series after finishing something else. Problem occurs when he doesn't look back into what he's already written and leaves subplots floating in the ether. A simple read through would have easily caught such errors as useing "and" instead of "are" or "with" rather than "will."
The insane thing about this series is it's interesting and has a lot of promise but it keeps kicking the reader in the dangly bits. By this I mean easily fixable reader speed bumps not only in editing but also in plotline and content. In the second book there was a useless but promised duel that did not occur. It is not mentioned whatsoever in book 3. Two characters that were a subplot of book one who were injured were completely ignored in book two and were not barely mentioned in passing now in book three as having been healed but not seen again.
When it comes to this story as interesting as it is the ending or better said the last 30% is a hot mess. It's a rush in which you're not able to understand what is going on until the author points it out and even then you feel like you just wasted your time because you spent so much time confused. The moment when you think you've almost figured it out you're thrown into a huge twist that is a cliffhanger. While there were hints of some of this twist I think or at least for me the idea of what it could be I think it was poorly seeded and rushed as much of this work and series has been.
This is a series that can make a reader angry because of how much potential it has in it, and knowing that the author isn't going to quite reach it. I have the feeling that all this authors work is much like this book series so far. It is imaginative full of possibility but quickly written and rushed for publication. Honestly from what I've read it feels like a rushed second draft where an author doesn't go back and add little character details and while cutting back some of the fat. Basically if it fits it prints.
UGH SO BORING. Nothing happens. No action. No talking with his friends. No character development. No mystery, twists, anticipation, nothing new introduced within the entire world of magical possibilities. It would be like an ENTIRE Harry Potter book being wasted with Harry sitting in classrooms thinking about the morality and philosophy of magic for hundreds of pages, doubting his worth over and over again, with repetitive paragraphs and pages of fluff. I don't care at all what happens the rest of the series which is so sad.
As the series keeps moving along it gets a wee bit better but the book is still a slow plod. Tolan has passed his test to be at the second level but of course we've got danger, shenanigans, the hero sensing he's "different" somehow but he's not exactly sure how that manifests, etc.
The book is relatively short read and I have to say, even though I'm mildly interested this was one of those series that could have been significantly shortened or better edited into a large omnibus. I understand that the books are divided as show the difference in academic years but I feel like this is a series that could have been condensed into a trilogy instead of being stretched out.
Still, I'm curious to see where we go from here, so I continue to plug away.
I'll get my nit-picking out of the way early. The title is deceptive, as the book really had precious little to do with shaping water. Now to the actual book. There was a good tension to this read, which had not been there in the earlier books. Things have never been easy for Tolan, but things take a bad turn when he finds himself under suspicion by the inquisitors and their master. And to make matters even worse, Tolan discovers what seems to be a rupture within the inquisitors' order. He finds it more difficult to distinguish friend from foe, although he can depend on his two closest friends, or can he?
This was an exciting read so much went down poor Golan is so turned around he's slowly coming into his own . But who can be trust the Grandmaster his friends his instructors his parents or the master librarian who is suspect in my eyes especially after reading the ending . The plot deepens and Tolan doesn't know who's who and what's truly going on for now he needs answers from the only people he can trust or can he his parents . Looking forward to the next book in this series .
Finally, Tolan obtained the power he desired, and he turned out to be an overpowered main character. He was definitely a smart and wise shaper. There's something mysterious about his family. I suspect that his abandonment is linked to a hidden secret involving the abduction of his parents, who I believe are somehow involved. I am very curious to learn more about the Draasin Lord.
I am now convinced that Ferrah is the friend Tolan truly needs. It also highlights that Jonas is a weakling who is too cowardly to defend his friend.

After having read the second book in this series, I was not looking forward to this one. However, this book was great!! I'm so glad I decided to give the series one more shot. This book started off with a bang and just got better and better! The characters had more depth and the plot was filled with exciting twists and turns. I literally couldn't put this one down. I highly recommend it and thanks for a great read!
Enjoyed this book very much. Editing is good . Even if an author has a good story bad punctuation, spelling, not knowing the correct word to portray the mood of the action spoil my enjoyment. Walking, .strolling, ambling, running show a different feeling to the plot. This writer kept my attention and didn't irritate me.
I keep finding myself being slowly pulled in - much like a fish on a hook - and then not being able to put the book down. There are so many twists and turns - I love trying to figure out what is coming, but rarely succeed. Wonderful reading despite grammatical errors, etc. I can ignore those in such a good yarn about our inner turmoil and self doubts. Look forward to the next book!!!
Strong characters, with a great story makes this series a pleasure to read and enjoy. I have read most of this author's books and enjoyed them. I believe you will also. Unique world, strong characters and a story line that keeps you wanting to turn the next page, will make you a believer to. Great Reading Everyone!
Another fun book in this series, this one doesn’t have as much overt action as the others and instead forces the protagonist to look inward. I’m interested to see what happens next.
D K, you excel with this series. Thank you. I'm already into the next book. I hope that the sales of your book go viral as people say. Peps don't miss out. Great story that I seriously don't know how to put down.
For the first 25% of this one, I didn't think I was going to like it as much as the first two. Then the rest of the book happened. This one was full of intrigue and revelations, and now I'm dying to read the next book.
This is one of the few series that I have been able to read one after another. Normally no matter how good it is I have to take a break. Really enjoying this series.
I did not see that coming. I am even more anxious now to read the next book The Wind Rages. I am not going to give anything away all I can say is WOW To get more you’ll have to read it. And I do not believe you will be disappointed.
Progressing through the series and on this one the "Everyone is against me" is very palpable. It still holds its mystery quite well and we enjoy everyones achievements. But we see the end is closer or the big reveal is starting to come to a head.
It has been many years since I stayed up all night reading a book because I could not put it down. I did so with this book. An incredible story and I can't wait for the next one.
The reveal at the end is what makes this volume intriguing. There's everything you need for a coming of age story in all these books which culminates in the 4th.
