Have you ever felt lost? Hopeless? Have to hide behind your mask? This book goes in depth about my trials and tribulations regarding my mask. Dive in and see what happens.
The "Mask" is a poem. It's meant to be read slowly and more than once.
I sat with it. I thought about it. I gave it a 3 star rating for effort. For sharing what's personal and yet not personal enough.
It's not in depth honesty regarding trials and tribulations. You're able to look into sentences presented and pick them apart to find the layers underneath; but, even then you're left somewhat guessing. Is this a mental health struggle, found within depression, or one of angst and loneliness? Of growing up and feeling alone even when surrounded by ones peers? How deep does the author's sadness go?
Wearing masks is something we all, for the most part, can relate to. Who are we going to be today? For some, the decision is based upon hiding the truth; for others, it's about blending in for the sake of not standing out.
Ultimately, this poem is one of overcoming. Of not putting on a mask, of getting out of ones own head, and engaging with others in healthier ways. Where masks become after thoughts because you've become confident in your own skin. You've learned how to live again.
There's freedom to be found on the other side of routine despair. There's life to be lived once you embrace the person you've always been. Show yourself for who you are and find your place; after all, we're all here for a reason: Claim your space!
The "Mask" on the front cover, coupled with the author's description will leave you looking for mystery that isn't found within this poetry. 3 stars regardless. Courage needs to be rewarded; and, I say to the author, "Try again!" Give your audience more! Relay the struggles more fully. More openly. More rawly. There's quite a bit that wasn't shared. Next time, don't hold back; remove the mask fully, from the past that once was yours, then you'll truly be helping others to do the same.
