Meet Howler, Screech, Whipsnake, Skeeter, and Mink-five dangerously alluring female vampires thundering down America’s highways on Harleys, drunk on freedom and high octane. After killing their male master, the Vamps set out on the open road in search of a new life. But Howler, their leader, is driven by a demon from her past...one that she must vanquish before she can truly enjoy the pleasures of an undead existence. Then, the Vamps go Hollywood as Mink tries to kickstart her movie career-but they soon run afoul of Screech’s old flame, a movie mogul with a nasty secret. This new book collects both VAMPS #1-6 and the never-before-collected VAMPS: HOLLYWOOD AND VEIN #1-6 and VAMPS: PUMPKIN TIME #1-3 in a single volume for the first time, along with a treasure trove of bonus and behind-the-scenes material and a brand-new cover by original series artist Will Simpson!
Vamps Five female, biker vampires raise hell throughout America after killing their male master. There's not much of a plot here other than watching the vamps seduce men before murdering them. Their is a half-baked plot with a private eye who is sort on their trail and a long lost child but it's not developed very well. It constantly feels like you may have skipped a page with these B-plots. Will Simpson's art is very 90's Vertigo.
Vamps: Hollywood & Vein Better than the first miniseries. The Vamps head to L.A. once they hear Hollywood is making a movie called "Biker Vamps". Mink tries to make it as the lead in the movie while Screech deals with an old friend who wishes to become a vampire. The writing was more focused with more of a story than the first volume. It does lean into the popularity of Interview with a Vampire though with the addition of a frilly vampire who spouts terrible (IMHO) poetry. The series focuses on the sexy allure of vampires without really being "sexy". Elaine Lee definitely seems to be trying to appeal to the middle aged house mom scene.
Vamps: Pumpkin Time The best of the three Vamps miniseries. Lee keeps it simple with this one. A vampire council sends out a group of vampires to kill Skeeter for being too public with her kills. This is also the most action oriented. Most of it is a big chase sequence on Halloween during a biker rally across the Golden Gate Bridge and into the redwood forests. It's a killer sequence.
I first discovered this series when I was only fourteen...when it first came out. For some reason, it stuck with me all these years, and I don't think that has anything to do with my morbid fascination with vampires. If you've never read it, it's basically The Lost BoysThe Lost Girls. And the town of Santa Carla is even mentioned in one of the stories (everyone knows that Santa Carla is just as fictional as Sunnydale is). Hot, sexy vampire chicks on motorcycles. What more could you ask for? I loved it when I was fourteen, and I loved it more when I read the Complete collected edition years later.
Deliciously bad ass. What a fun read. I knocked a star off for a few small reasons, the biggest one is probably that there were a few instances where similar looking characters were introduced around the same time and it made things hard to follow.
Still worth it. The girls murderous and hot and it hits the notes it reaches for. Maggot is my favorite.
