Spring Break in Mexico. Drinking and drugs. Surf and sunshine. Feeling adventurous, a group of young travellers decide to visit some Mayan ruins and stay the night in a small town off the regular tourist track. But the town’s inhabitants are strange and sickly, with red, bloodshot eyes. The townsfolk have been replaced by vampiric creatures known as Aswang. Shapeshifters who drink the blood of humans and suck unborn babies out of their mothers’ wombs. Skinny enough to hide in impossibly small places. Inhumanly strong, unnaturally fast. Trapped, the tourists will have to fight their way out or lose more than just their lives.
Definitely a Sean E. Britten fan. Here, he offers what is ostensibly a horror-action novel that gives us a rather nice twist on the classic vampire tale by pulling, among other things, from Filipino folklore. And yet, the story takes place in the remote mountains of Mexico. Yep, it's that kind of story -- full of unexpected developments, characters and twists -- and ideal story for a movie. The book's a good length, but you'll want to race right through it to see how everything turns out. A perfect read for summer...or October!
What a great adventure! Deep in remote Mexico a group of tourists are visiting some Mayan ruins. But they've bitten off more than they can chew. This was a cool book that drew me in and held my attention. It changes from a happy go lucky group of tourists having a good time to an action horror story very fast. There are some nice twists and turns and being an Aussie, I like there were a couple of Australians thrown into the mix! Blend a bunch of tourists in regional Mexico with shape shifting demons from Filipino legend and you are in for one kick ass ride. Definitely recommended for fans of horror mixed with fast-paced action. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author!
