They say every dog has his day. Well today I've had mine. Hey, I'm Albertus Eagle and it turns out I'm an unwitting pet detective. I haven't always been such a successful legal beagle, but when I'm confronted with a case that is so personal I can't ignore it, I discover I have a passion for finding those who don't want to be found.
Cleo the cat? Well, she tags along for the ride.
I've not only found myself a new home after the untimely demise of my previous owner, but I've also made amends with the cat. It turns out she's not that bad, really.
On top of that, what sends shivers racing down my spine to my paws, is that we've fingered a killer.
How?
Because you humans underestimate us animals. And while you go about your business ignoring our very existence, the cat and I are listening and taking notes.
A fun, escapist, cosy mystery where you can park all sense of reality at the front door and just enjoy the shenanigans of a self-important beagle, his best buddy, a cat, and their new owner as they join together to hunt down a murderer!
This is a fun cozy mystery told from the POV of Albertus (Albie) a beagle. There is a short 32 page novella prior to this that I downloaded and read before reading this one and it set up this story nicely. Milly, a brilliant pianist and owner of Albie and Cleo the cat dies. What everyone else thinks is an accident, Albie and Cleo are sure was murder. This story has them being rescued from the pound by Bella, an eccentric, wealthy woman who understands Albie, Dr. Doolittle anyone? With Bella's help, they set out to solve the mystery of who killed Milly.
This is a fun story, full of mystery and humour. The animals are a hoot and are always getting into trouble. I loved the scene of the yoga class in the park, I actually laughed out loud. The relationships between Albie and Cleo, Albie and Milly, and Milly and Cleo change constantly throughout the story. The mystery was fun, although I had figured out who dunnit early, I just didn't know how. This is a quick read and a nice fun story to read between more serious books. If you love animals, enjoy a fun cozy mystery and don't mind that the animals actually solve the case, then this is the book for you. Happy to say there is another book in this series already on the way. I received a copy of this book from the author upon my request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
Clever, creative and fun! I enjoyed this sweet cozy mystery featuring the first Detective Beagle I have ever read about! There is a prequel to this book, which I haven’t read yet, but I had no trouble making friends with Albie the Beagle, his sidekick Cleo the cat, and their human, Bella.
The trio of Albie, Cleo and Bella have a serious situation on their hands. They fear that the former mistress of the animals, Milly, was murdered. The three of them put their various skills together and romp around the English countryside looking for clues. Along the way, Bella meets a charming policeman, Pip.
Of course, the fun in a cozy mystery is the whole zany process of amateurs solving a crime and there’s plenty of fun entertainment in this book. What makes this book especially endearing is that Albie the dog and Cloe the cat are in the hands of a creative author. Albie can communicate with Bella because Bella can fully understand him! Turns out the cat can communicate with Albie and Bella, too.
The author makes it work, while still having Albie and Bella act like animals. Well done! Here are some charming examples. Sometimes Albie has to talk to the cat while she sits in an empty box. Bella explains to both of them how humans think. “This is the thing about humans, we do like a good moan. Whingeing about life somehow validates us.” And Albie’s keen nose helps the trio as they sniff out the crime.
This is a warm and friendly cozy mystery with a happy and satisfying ending. Looking forward to more books in this series. Thanks to the author and Rachel’s Random Reviews for a digital review copy. This is my honest review.
This is a brilliant, cosy murder mystery with the beagle, Albertus Eagle, as the lead detective! What a great read this proved to be, told from the point of view of Albie, it is a funny tale of trying to convince those silly humans about just what is going on! This is definitely a different detective story with a Doctor Doolittle type character, Bella Schuhmann, who can talk to the animals endeavouring to help them solve just whodunit!
After the untimely death of their owner, both Albertus and Cleo the cat are placed in a sanctuary until they are adopted by Bella. Together the two pets seek to discover what really happened to their previous owner and they need to work with Bella to do this. It is such a fun read, packed with intrigue, mystery, humour and satire - a brilliant read that kept me enthralled from start to finish. The developing relationship between the pets and their new human are brilliantly portrayed and had me laughing out loud many times throughout the story. I was definitely hoping this will be the first in a new series though I dreaded to think what this intrepid trio might get up to together in future but when I went to check I discovered this is the second book in a series!
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.
Cozy mystery books are a lovely mixture containing suspense and humour. I am a big fan of psychological thrillers but once in a while I can’t resist reading a book in this genre.
I am a doglover and when I see that one is playing a main role, I am even more inclined to read the story.
The author has created a fun story and I love Albie. The way he reacted was wonderful. I guess the author has a dog or did a really good job in studying one, because the canine behaviour was so real and recognizable.
The book also hints at a budding romance. I am looking forward to see how things will develop.
I thought it was a very enjoyable read. 4 stars.
Thank you, Chloe Grace and Rachel’s Random Resources.
Every Dog has his Day is book one in the Albertus Eagle Detective Beagle series by Chloe Grace. Albertus Eagle found a new home with Bella Schuhmann and her pet cat called Cleo. Albertus Eagle and his mat Cleo caught a case of the death of Milly. The readers of Every Dog has his Day will continue to follow Albertus Eagle and Cleo to find out what happens.
Every Dog has his Day is the first book I have read of Chloe Grace, and I enjoyed reading this lovely cozy mystery. I could not stop laughing at the characters of this book. I love the way Chloe Grace portrayed her characters and their interaction with each other throughout this book. Every Dog has his Day is well written and researched by Chloe Grace, and I like Chloe Grace description of the settings of Every Dog has his Day that complemented the plot of this book.
The readers of Every Dog has his Day will learn that Chloe Grace real name is Karen Botha. Also, the readers of Every Dog has his Day will learn about the dog bread called Beagle.
Every Dog Has His Day is the story of Albertus Eagle, aka Albie a dog with outstanding intellect, overflowing loyalty and amazing instinct for murder!
The story is written from the dogs perspective and the first few chapters are devoted to bringing the reader up to date with Albie’s past. He used to live in a mansion with Milly a famous pianist, even accompanying her on stage at her recitals. Cleo the cat also lived with them, outwardly Albie only tolerates the cat but inwardly he is very fond of her.
Milly dies suddenly and Albie and Cleo find themselves in a rescue centre. The standards are far from what Albie is used to but luckily along comes Bella, a beautiful young artist who takes them both home to her apartment. Albie likes his new surroundings, they are not as plush as he is used to but Bella has an amazing talent. She understands everything that Albie tells her, and he has a lot to say because he believes that his wonderful former owner’s death was highly suspicious.
Together they set out to relive Milly’s last hours and find out how come she died so suddenly. First, they need to meet up with Milly’s last visitor. Bella does the talking, just as they practiced, and Albie gives subtle prompts when his owner goes off track.
However, things that they uncover about Milly don’t tie in with what Albie remembered.
Albie and Bella soon notice that Cleo the cat can also communicate her thoughts and feelings, so the detective partnership becomes a trio.
I found this quick read to be cleverly written and an entertaining way to pass a few hours. I loved the chemistry between the characters, especially Albie who is bossy and impatient yet very loyal and kind. Cosy mysteries are not for everyone but I find the gentle crime aspect and tongue in cheek humour to be quite refreshing.
Dog owners will never be able to look at their faithful pooches in the same way again!
I’ve been enjoying pet cozies so when I saw this story pop up I decided I had to give it a try. The story is told entirely from the detective protagonist’s perspective. It just so happens that our protagonist, Albie, is a dog. Albertus Eagel the Beagle to be exact.
Of course trying to tell the tale solely from the dog’s perspective comes with some limitations. I thought the author handled those limitations quite well and we still do get to understand much of how things play out from his owner, Bella’s perspective. The advantage here being that Bella can communicate fully with Albie.
Albie is now probably my absolute favourite cozy mystery protagonist!
There is sound plotting used to lay out the mystery. Most of the clues are revealed through what Albie remembers and through the conversations Bella has with suspects. I don’t think we really get enough clues to point us in the right direction but I do like how the suspects and their motives and opportunities are revealed.
My favourite part: Interaction with The Cat a.k.a Cleo. In typical dog versus cat style, these two fully get into it with each other at times. But underneath the posturing on both their parts they really are best friends, have each other’s backs and love snuggling up together.
Overall this is a fun, short cozy mystery told from the dog’s POV. I look forward to reading more in the series, especially to see how Bella’s relationship with Detective Pip turns out!
You know when there are books you know you're going to need some day as a pick me up (I no longer really read magazines, which used to be my go to "chill out" fodder!) Well this was such a book.
Stuck in a slump I remembered I had this, a detective book with the dog as the main hero and so off I went. It is the story of Albie, a beagle who is in for a shock as his owner dies and he heads straight for the pound. Enter the lovely and kooky Bella, who takes a shine to him and his nemesis, cat Chloe. The huge thing is Bella can understand what Albie says! (Chloe the cat, not so much!) Between them, they realise there's a mystery to be solved and so, as you would suspect with a talking dog on her side, Bella has the ultimate in a tool to find out the ultimate in mysteries. The story is done in a way you would expect and hope, with for example Albie keeping sketch for Bella or being able to get into places she can. There's also a real life human member of the force looking over their shoulder! I really enjoyed this and flew through it, nodding in a satisfied fashion as I read. It was a fun read that is perfect for either holidays or just chilling out on the couch. Very enjoyable! Thanks so much to Rachel for having me as part of blog tour and for the book in return for an honest review.
Albie is a dog. A beagle to be exact. He and his friend Cleo the cat (yes it’s possible as Albie explains) have moved house as their owner Millie died. They first went to an animal shelter which was rather a shock after living in the lap (literally) of luxury having lived in a mansion with a butler and Bentley. They have gone to live with Bella who much to his amazement Albie finds can understand every word he says as well as Cleo the cat. He is convinced that Millie died under suspicious circumstances and so begins the trail of finding out who and why. They are used to living the high life and although life with Bella isn’t quite so grand as before they have everything they want and a huge amount of TLC. What more could any pet desire? Albie can understand humans although not read and being a dog has it’s advantages of being able to sneak innocently around. What more could an amateur detective wan? I’m a huge dog lover so in no way found it strange for a dog to be talking (well they do- don’t they?). I really enjoyed this. A short read (novella- perhaps a couple of hours) with a smile on every page. For more reviews please see my blog http://nickibookblog.blogspot.co.uk/ or follow me on Twitter @nicki’sbookblog
What a delightful read! Funny, entertaining AND a bit of a mystery too!
Albertus Beagle and Cleo the cat lived in a veritable paradise with their owner, Milly, until her death. Lucky enough to be rehomed together, they miss the large garden they used to be free to roam. Living in a luxurious apartment doesn't quite live up to their expectations but they both know how lucky they are to have Bella in their lives. Happily, Bella has an affinity with both of them and soon realises that she has not only acquired two new pets, but it's down to her to help them catch a killer . . .
This is such fun! The author has nailed the characteristics of both Albie and Cleo and writes in a very entertaining style. Investigating gives both Albie and 'the cat' the chance to show off their own personalities, and this is a very quirky read and one which made be smile as I read along. A clever puzzle too - I, for one, never suspected the real culprit. A super light-hearted read and a series I'll be very happy to follow. I can't find fault in any way, so in my book that makes it worth five shiny stars!
A terrific. Written from the view of Albertus with occasional help from the cat and his new human. Will they manage to unearth any clues as to the death of Milly, his last owner. A fun packed look at how animals view life, each other and us. With characters that leap of the page and endear them sector the reader. They have been put into the animal shelter before you could blink after Milly's death. Luckily a current volunteer rescued them both (she didn't have to take the cat!) but best of all she can understand them. Well the cat is slightly harder but with tie it should get better. The three decide that they are going to investigate and make sure that justice is served. An unlikely trio of detectives. Add in interviews with the suspects, a spot of redecorating by the cat, a stalker, a handsome police constable and adventures galore. Will any of them lead to finding out who the killer is and how Milly died? Plus a surprise right at the end!
This is my first cozy mystery in awhile, and I am happy to say, it checked that box so well. It’s humorous, satirical, and intriguing with a wonderful cast of characters!
Lead detective, Albie the Beagle teams up with Cleo the cat, and Bella their human to solve a murder mystery! At first glance, this plot could have been really cheesy. However, Chloe Grace is an incredibly talented author and has managed to make everything in this book seem realistic and possible. I love the friendship between the three. I love that even though Bella is able to understand Albie and Cleo, the animals still act like animals. It was easy to get absorbed into this novel.
My only minor complaint was some of the mystery reveals were a bit convenient. This didn’t take me out of the story too much because the rest of it was so endearing. I highly recommend Every Dog Has His Day. It’s the perfect summer read.
*I received a copy of this book as part of a blog tour with Rachel's Random Resources. All opinions are my own.*
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I can't wait for Albie & Cleo's next adventure. Albie is our amateur sleuth & main Character. He just happens to be a beagle. Cleo is is referred to as"the cat" through much of the book & I loved that! You can just hear the disdain Albie has for her every time you read those words. But, both are hurting over the sudden death of their owner Millie & neither believes it was natural, so they lean on each other, comfort each other & team up to find her killer. And Albie literally does catch the guilty party. Albie is quite vocal, but for probably the first third to half of the book Cleo doesn't speak. When she eventually does both Albie & their new owner, Bella, are shocked. When they ask why she hasn't spoken before Cleo's response is so perfectly cat. The author is obviously an animal lover & really has their attitudes down. It's a big part of what makes this a perfect cozy to me. I love a solid mystery with a lot of humor & a little romance & this one was perfect! Bella was a very reluctant sleuth, but got into it as time went on. The pace was steady & the plot moved along just right. Normally, I list pros, cons & a bottom line, but the truth is I have no cons. And this is only the second book I've been able to say that about ! I truly hope this is the start of a very long running series. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to the author and Rachels Random Resources for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was such an adorable mystery book which followed Albie the Beagle and Cleo the cat to get to the bottom of what really happened to their previous owner, this is of course helped by their new owner Bella who just so happens to be able to understand Albie! This was such a different read for me at the moment especially as the main character was a dog! I really enjoyed the different perspective that having non-human characters brings and I think the author did a spectacular job of writing in such a way that I could really understand where Albie and Cleo were coming from/ what they were experiencing. This is definitely a cozy mystery and I think it may become a bit of a comfort read. A really enjoyable story!
Albertus Eagle is a beagle. He used to travel with a performing pianist, but she is gone now. Murdered. To most, her death appears to have been by natural causes associated with old age but Albie has better instincts. He knows it was not Milly's time to die. Fortunately he and his sidekick, Cleo, a cat, are adopted by a sympathetic dogwalker at the shelter. I should mention She, Bella, can also understand Albie when he speaks.
The story begins with the end, as a suspect is sent packing in a squad car. This book is Albie explaining how the murder was solved. Although famous, it seems Milly was not as well liked by those closest to her. Many had motives to wish her gone. She was not the person her best beagle believed her to be.
A nice, clean cozy mystery with a hint of romance and the growth of some beautiful friendships.
When their owner, a concert pianist and composer dies suddenly Albie and his feline companion end up in the care of a wealthy volunteer at the animal rescue. They like their new human, but the four-footed pair are certain Milly, their old owner was murdered and they're determined to find her killer. Fortunately Albie can communicate with Bella, (don't all dogs communicate with their humans) and she's willing to help in their investigations. Every Dog is a charming, light-hearted cozy mystery . Albie is adorable, Cleo is aloofly cat-like, Bella is an understanding but naive artist, and Pip the policeman is an infatuated, over eager but well meaning legal support system for an amusing round of investigations and interviews that point the fickle finger of suspicion at one of Milly's acquaintances after another. A delightful read, whether or not you're an animal lover.
Oh! That was so much fun. Albie displays all the sweetly bumbling brilliance of Poirot, while Bella and Cleo play long-suffering Watsons to his intrepid sleuth. (And yes, I realize I’m playing mix-and-match with my detective heroes.) I’ve long been fan of pet detectives, though I have to admit this is the first time I can remember reading from a dog’s eye view – I’m more used to a feline leading man. There’s a bit of a Keystone Cops feel to the story. They stumble into the correct solution in the end, though I can’t fault them for that. I still hadn’t picked out the right culprit by the time the arrest was made. I enjoyed this story immensely and I look forward to reading lots more about Albie and his cohorts. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.
I absolutely love a good cozy mystery. I’m an animal lover and when you mix the two together, well I’m in heaven. The best part to this book was the dog, Albertus Eagle telling the story. You saw it from his point of view, genius! I fell in love with this book right from the beginning. Just adopting a dog from a rescue just a few months ago, that part hit home. The mystery part kept me guessing throughout the whole story and I was way wrong on who did it. If you love cozy mysteries and dogs and cats, then this book is for you. I look forward to the next book to see what Albie and Chloe get themselves into.
Very cute cozy mystery. Great for pet lovers as Albie and Cleo get a new owner and help solve the murder of their previous owner. So adorable having the story told from the viewpoint of Albie the beagle. My only critique is the scene when Albie and Cleo get out of the house but I will not explain rather as no spoilers in my review. If you are looking for a mystery that you are able to solve before the sleuths this is not for you. The reader finds out the clues just as Albie, Cleo, and Bella do. I loved how the relationship between cohabitating cats and dogs is explained so it makes more sense. I often wish I could understand what my beagle is saying to me. I received this in a free ARC offer and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. (I would have read it in one day if life had not prevented it from happening).
This is an adorable cozy mystery told from the dog's point of view. Albie the beagle and his cat sidekick Cleo are adopted by Bella, an artist and dog walker at the local pet rescue, after their owner Milly is murdered. Bella can understand both animals when they speak and the three of them investigate the murder. The story being told from the dog's perspective is quite unique and amusing. The characters are well developed and the plot keeps you guessing as to who done it until the final pages. Highly recommend.
I adore the characters! Albie the beagle and Chloe the cat are the cutest detectives ever. Along with their human team, Bella their new owner and Pip her police officer crush they set out to solve who killed their former owner.
The author has done an excellent job of humanizing Albie and Chloe. So much so that it makes me look at my little Lhasa Alpso in a new light.
This book will keep you turning the pages until the very end. And when you get there, no only will you be very surprised but sad to see it end.
Such a cute way to write a story! And, I liked that it began with “the end”, then jumped back to the beginning. All “the end” really told me was that the bad person was captured by the police - - but, it was enough information so that I could enjoy delving into “who did it”, without worrying that the mystery would not get solved. I really got into reading about how the Beagle and the cat went about solving the mystery. I was as confused as they were as to who the culprit was, until the very end. The story was well-written with a good plot and the characters were well-developed.
This wonderful cozy mystery set is told by Albie's (Albertus Eagle, the beagle) point of view. It explains how they came to live with Bella who can understand Albie and insists that the call his friend by her real name 'Cleo' instead of 'the cat'.
There is humour galore, murder, mystery, and danger for the trio but Albie takes it all in stride and explains everything to us in a delightful manner.
When Albus and his companion, Cleo the cat find themselves in a pet shelter after their previous owner's mysterious and sudden death, they are lucky enough to be adopted by someone who understands them. Really understands them, such as can converse with them. When Albus conveys his concerns about the death, they concoct plans to discover who the murderer is. There are several suspects and it's tricky collecting evidence. A fun read and this book can be read by anyone.
I LOVED this cozy mysyery told from Albie, the Detective Beagle's POV. It was a nice change of pace. The story is very well written with great characters, a lot of action & plenty of twists and turns. About the time I thought I had everything figured out, Ms. Grace would throw me a curve ball & I wouldn't be sure of anything again. I can't wait to get the next book & see where Bella, Albie and Cleo wind up next; and of course, Pip. I definitely recommend this series.
Albertus Eagle is a fine Beagle, a perfect specimen, and with a great voice throughout this story. His relationship with Cleo - the cat - is sweet, and funny, and so very natural.
His loyalty to his previous owner is adorable too, as is his growing fondness for Bella who finds them both at the animal sanctuary after the death of their owner, Milly. Taking them home, Bella is in for a shock when it becomes apparent that neither pet is going to accept Milly's death as anything but natural. And so the intrepid duo convince Bella to investigate. I love the idea of Bella, a Dr Doolittle type who can talk to her pets, in fact I'm more than jealous of her abilities.
Together they unravel the mystery behind Milly's death with many an adventure or escapade in between. It's a true cosy, but with the viewpoint being all dog which makes for a fun, entertaining, easy to read story. I read this in one sitting, and I blame Albie for that entirely ;) It is such a fun read, full of mystery and suspense, and some lovely satirical comments from Albie who really can't believe quite how dumb humans can be. Although, that said, Albie and Cleo might be the stars of the story, but infallible they are not, albeit they do get carried away with infectious enthusiasm.
I’m enjoying this new cozy series, told from the dog’s point of view! The writing is fresh and skillful. Both the two and four legged characters are well drawn and interesting. It was an enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to future installments. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
This is a really fun series! I love the beagle and all of his friends. His relationship with his human is great and really funny. If you need a pick me up then reach for this book (or any in the series) as it will put a smile on your face, guaranteed! I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
