!! NOW AVAILABLE !!

Most soaps are made with water, but you can make soap with any liquid with a pH above 6: milk, tea, even beer and wine. So why an entire book dedicated to making soap with milk? Well, it’s kind of like drinking hot chocolate made with milk instead of hot chocolate made with water. Milk soap is creamier and more luscious than soap made with water. The lather is more dense. The foam is more fine and silkier. Milk soaps have the same cleansing power, but milk’s natural oils and acids pump up the skin-loving moisture quotient and aid in skin renewal.”

Animal-based milk vs. plant milks is addressed, but she also addresses the benefits of animal-based milks (the small degree of lactic acid contained acts as a mild, soothing exfoliant, and leaves your skin smoother), the benefits of whole vs skim, and among animal-based milks, the benefits of cow’s milk vs. goat’s milk along with others, including sheep, donkeys, and camels. There is also some information about the degree of milk vs a mixture of milk / water, and how to avoid scorching the milk proteins, as well as the use of powdered milk, and even the use of breast milk.

There are illustrations to take you through the entire process – from mixing the soap to the point of where you unmold and cut at the end of the process. The illustrations are not only helpful, but beautifully composed.

The properties of different oils has a chapter devoted to it, addressing what each various type of oil and the benefits of each, including Apricot kernel oil, Argan oil, Avocado butter, Avocado oil, Babassu oil, Borage oil, Canola oil, Chia seed oil, Castor oil, Cocoa butter, Coconut oil, Coffee butter, Hazelnut oil, Hempseed oil, and many more, with the SAP Value of each. This also addresses the use of Animal Fat vs Oil.

Containing levels from beginner to those with plenty of experience, there’s so much more that this covers, and definitely worth the investment.

It's impossible to read this book and not drool,!!!
It's hard to believe the photos are soaps! I just wanna eat them all.

The photos are absolutely beautiful.
The step by step process explained is in depth and well explained, and the recipies are to die for.
I can't wait to start my first batch, the only problem is trying to decide which one to do first!!
This is a brilliant book and a lovely book to gift.

I have to mention how truly thrilled I was to find a mention on breast milk and how it could be used in the recipies. Something that is rarely covered in any natural cosmetic recipies.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the most beautiful soap making book. The photos the different soap are all stunning. The book has beginning as well as advanced recipes. I thought milk would be just cows or goat milk, no it's almond, coconut, rice, hemp and just about any milk, even breast milk. This book is vegan friendly. It would make a fabulous gift book for anyone interested in making soaps at home.
I remember reading about famous people who would soak in milk baths to make their skin silky soft. I have been making soaps for years but never tried with milk. I am making several recipes for Mother's Day to hand out. I can't wait to get started.

Thank you to the publishers for an advanced copy for review

If you are interested in making soaps, look no further than this guide by Anne-Marie Faiola. She gives step-by-step instructions, each of which is accompanied by a photographic illustration. The soaps range in creation difficulty from fairly simple to very complex. She explains differences in ingredients and explains chemical reactions and textures that might be achieved. She even includes a section at the end which anticipates questions users might have, such as the need for distilled water versus tap water. The milks used in recipes include mammals, such as cows and goats, nuts, and grains. She explains the process of creating milk from the last two sources. She discusses molds, from simple disposable ones to more elaborate ones. She provides lists of "kitchen tools" soapmakers need. The soaps are lovely and would make wonderful gifts. It's a fascinating book, but I'm a bit intimidated by it, probably because of the complexity of some of the more advanced recipes. Workman Publishing sent me an email offering me an egalley of the book which was offered through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Ever since this summer, I've been dabbling with soap making. It became a hobby of mine after I fell into a hole of YouTube videos and Google research, and Anne-Marie Faiola is hard to miss when researching it.
In Milk Soaps, Faiola beautifully explains the correct way to produce soap that features milk as an ingredient. She offers great advice and details all the ingredients one can use when making soap in a way suited for beginners. The book also features recipes that variate in the level of difficulty - but there is something for everyone and with the introductory pages and the guide offered at the beginning of the book, swapping ingredients to make it your own is made simple.
I really enjoyed reading through this book, it's a very helpful guide. I'm currently all stocked up on soap, so I can't wait till spring to try out a few of the recipes.

I have made cold process soap but was very interested in milk soaps, especially as I have very sensitive skin and would love to try out their moisturising qualities . This beautiful book is full of step by step instructions, set out in an easy to understand way. The photographs are stunning and had me itching to give it a go right away.

I loved how the book encompasses all skill levels from the beginner upwards. This book would make a fantastic gift for anyone who has an interest in soap making, introducing them to milk-enriched soaps in a very informative way .

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for my chance to read this beautiful book.

Thank you Storey Publishing and Netgalley for an ARC of this book in return for my honest review.

This is a fabulous, comprehensive book on how to make soaps from different types of milk. The first part of the book explains the science and how to make diffemt milk based soaps, giving a variety of options for milks, scents, equipment needed etc. the information is well researched, easy to understand and well presented with great photography, The book then provides numerous recipes, again with beautiful photography and easy to understand recipes.

I have a new appreciation of what goes into making a beautiful, luxurious soap and learned so much about how different milks used result in a different colour soap, the best ingredients to use for more lather or better moisturising properties.

A must read for anyone wanting to start making their own soap.

There are a lot of books out there on soapmaking. This one stood out to me because it includes plant-based milks in the recipes. The author even includes instructions for making your own milk from grains, seeds and nuts and examples are shown of.soaps made with various milks to show the impact on color. Many recipes call for a specific type of milk, but it is noted that any type of milk can be used for these recipes. The properties of various oils, milks, fragrances and colorants are discussed, giving the reader the information needed to choose ingredients to produce soap with the desired qualities. There is an FAQ section as well that addresses common problems and explaining what likely went wrong. The recipes themselves vary widely so there's a bit of everything, from a shampoo bar to exfoliation bars to beautiful general use bars and more. Recipes are categorized by difficulty (beginner, intermediate, advanced) so the maker can choose an appropriate project to suit their skill and experience level. Recipes are accompanied by photo tutorials showing the steps to creating the different bar shapes and designs. There are some really beautiful designs here and it was fun to see the process. While I'm not sure I'll ever jump into soapmaking myself, I definitely have a better appreciation for the work involved in producing those bars I see at farmers markets and my local co-op! I think this would be a valuable resource for anyone wanting to learn to make soap.

Thank you to the author, Anne-Marie Faiola, Story Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. All comments are my own, unbiased opinion.

Soap making has been around for years. My grandma used to make it out of lye and ashes and dad always complained it did the job but it wasn’t necessarily easy on your hands. Store bought soap used to be a luxury. Now we purchase soaps in many different colors, shapes and scents from stores, but I prefer handmade soaps. Local artists create wonderful soaps, many of them unique with colors and ingredients that smell fabulous. They are often pricy and there is a reason for this. There is a lot of work that goes into making your own soap, but if you read Milk Soaps, you will have step by step instructions to help you succeed if you would like to give it a try.

A balance of a high-pH substance such as lye or sodium hydroxide and oil will make soap. But the process is not quite that easy. A “carrier liquid” is needed, most of the time water is used, but true to the book’s title, the recipes in this book will use milk. You can use any kind of milk. I loved the chapter on the different types. Most memorable are camel and make your own nut, grain and seed milks. There are special techniques for working with milks in soap, one of them outlines how to use frozen milk.

Why does the author use milk instead of water? It is all about the lather. With milk soap, the lather is creamier and the foam is finer and silkier. Milk is a natural moisturizer to soothe and soften your skin.

Ms. Faiola includes 35 skin-nourishing recipes. She gives the reader detailed lists of items needed as well as how to safely use lye. It is an extremely caustic substance and should always be used with the proper safety equipment and attire. Dressing like a lab scientist not only looks cool, but keeps you safe from getting lye on your skin or in your eyes.

Making soap is complicated. Milk Soaps gives you all of the written instructions, tips and tricks to create your own fabulous soap. It is interesting to read even if you don’t want to make your own soap, it will give you information that you can use to choose the perfect soap from your local artisan or farmer’s market. If you do choose to make your own soap, you may find it is fun and all of your friends and relatives will love helping you try out new scents and color combinations.

After reading this book and seeing the work soap making entails, I understand the reason for the price of handmade soap, and appreciate the work that the soap maker has put into each bar of soap. Soapmaking is truly an art.

Those of us who have been making soap for awhile sure know Anne-Mariel and her company, Brambleberry, well. Anne-Marie is an experienced soaper who has shared her knowledge and recipes for a long time and her company offers quality ingredients and molds as well. If you are brand new to soaping and are nervous about lye, don’t be. Anne-Marie covers all of the basics and safety precautions to take when working with lye. Regardless of where you fall on the soaping experience spectrum, there is something in this book for you!

I love milk soaps, they are rich and luxurious and to be quite honest, I haven’t made soap in a few years now. This book got me out in the garage to pull out my bins of molds and supplies. Goat milk is on my grocery list for this weekend and I am going to be making some spring colored soap that will brighten my morning showers.

Simple to follow instructions and photos that will have you making soap quickly. Anne-Marie is the queen of soap and you will love this book!

There are a lot of books out there on soapmaking. This one stood out to me because it includes plant-based milks in the recipes and has several degrees of difficulty.

The photos are absolutely beautiful. The step by step process is explained in depth. Although I haven’t made soap in a very long time, I was intrigued by this book. The author does an extremely good job explaining the process, the materials, and the chemistry behind making soap.

I liked the chemistry lessons that weren’t so schoolish in nature, the tips and suggestions on common items that can be tools of the process, and the ingredients. After reading this book, I may convince myself to begin making soap again for myself and friends. I found the book fascinating and it kept my attention.

I was not disappointed and am glad I can add it to my reference library.

This beautiful book contains 35 unique recipes making soap with milk! The first thing I'd like to point out is when referring to milk we're not just talking cows milk or goats milk, the book includes nut and coconut milk and discusses the drawbacks and the benefits of the different types.

The recipes have been designed to be nourishing to the skin and laid out in a simple format become more tricky as the book goes along. The book is great for people who want to progress from melt and pour soap making to something that is truly your own handmade soaps.

There are a number of different chapters before the recipes including a chapter on oils, giving a description of them and their uses. It goes on to talk about the pros and cons of the different types of molds that can be used to create the soaps. Safety is also covered, outlining the risks of using some materials.

The first recipe given is a shea and aloe bars, making 8 individual bars. Each recipe has details of any specialist tools needed, oil amounts, Lye-Water, Fragrance Oils, colourant and additives along with preparations, making the batter, mixing and pouring then the final steps.

As you dive deeper into the book the soaps become more challenging. Throughout the book, there are detailed pictures showing each process step by step to reassuring you as you progress through a recipe

The book ends with a glossary of the different terms that are used along with a question and answer section that is very helpful!

With thanks to Netgalley, Anne-Marie Faiola, and Storey Publishing for this Advanced Reader’s Copy.

I absolutely love Anne-Marie Faiola's "Milk Soaps". I have been using her tips and tricks from her Bramble Berry website ever since I first started soaping a couple years ago. I have been nervous of trying milk soaps lays out how simple it is. If you can make CP soap without milk than you can definitely make it with it. There are so many amazing recipes, with options for using fragrance oils or essential oils, as well different colour options. With each recipe she shows a different technique for pouring, layering, or otherwise designing your soap for exceptional finished products. Includes photography of every step for each recipe, so even if you have never made soap you can easily and successfully make it using this wonderful tutorial style book. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this, but I can't wait to get my hands on a hardcopy when it's released!

Anne-Marie Faiola is the founder of Washington-based Bramble Berry, a company that sells supplies for hand-crafted soaps, lotions and cosmetics. She also blogs as the Soap Queen, and you can get a taste for the type of recipes you will find in this book on the blog.

The book goes into enough detail to be used for your first batch of soap, but also includes advanced tips and techniques to help a more experienced home soap-maker produce spectacular and beautiful results.

As the name indicates, this book focuses primarily on milk-based soaps and offers information on the special handling of various types of animal and vegetable milks and how they will impact the final product. The recipes in the book are balanced exemplars for showcasing different milks and various decorative processes. The reader is given enough information to adapt the techniques to other recipes or to modify the recipes (with the caveat that substitution of one oil for another should be checked with an online lye calculator).

Because the author owns a company that sells soap-making supplies, those branded tools and additives are featured prominently in recipes and photographs, but the author takes care to indicate how to substitute other pigments and includes a broad selection of suppliers in addition to Bramble Berry.

One of the first things that I noticed about this book is the organisation, or rather the division of the recipes in Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced soap making skills. The second was the wonderfully crafted soaps in different colours, with swirls, texture and different layers. It was a joy to look at the pictures.

Mammal milk and nut and grain milk recipes can be found in all three categories. The advantages and special techniques for working with milk are especially interesting, since soap making with milk is different to working with water.

This guide is interesting for any soap maker, whether they have tried making soap before or are experienced soap makers and want to try making milk soap.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for an electronic advance of this book. I was so delightfully surprised! I thought it would be about JUST milk, in the general sense of the word. Instead, this book gives ideas and how to information for everything...cow's milk, goat's milk, but also coconut and almond milk. Honestly this opened a whole new world for me. Plus, the book is beautiful. I really want to leap in and start making soap now. Guess what everyone is getting for Christmas?

As an avid and self-taught soap maker, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel! It presented a wonderful view of adding milk and milk-type products to the process and provided a lot of wonderful recipes for doing it. The details of the various types of milks and oils that can be used to make soaps and the explanations of the SAP percentages were some of the best and easiest to understand that I've seen.

An excellent addition to any soap-makers recipe books! I received this as an ARC from Netgalley.

A fabulous book for learning how to make your own soap using milk, not just cows milk, but any sort you like.

There are plenty of recipes to choose with different shapes, swirls, properties and fragrances, though there are lots of ingredients to be used to make the soap and you have to wait a few days for it to set, but it certainly looks worth while the wait.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Milk Soaps is a tutorial guide to making and using milk-enriched soaps of high quality for the hobbyist soapmaker. Due out 30th April 2019 from Storey, it's 272 pages and available in flexibound and ebook formats.

Soapmaking has become a very popular hobby in the last years. There are a myriad of books available with every possible recipe and additive. A recent search of Amazon kicked up some booklets and a few single-use recipes for milk soaps, but very little info specifically aimed at using milks (both plant and animal based) to create soap. This is a complete treatment of the subject gathered into one hefty volume.

It begins with an introduction of the ideas and science behind saponification. The introductory chapter and tools and ingredients section covers about 19% of the page content. The author also includes a good subchapter on safety including proper storage of lye and other ingredients. The introduction is followed by 35 specific recipes arranged roughly in order of the level of complexity. All of the ingredients called for in the book are easily sourced with an internet search, with one exception. The author does talk about the possibility of using human breast milk for soapmaking (though it's not listed in one of the 35 specific recipes). I wish I'd had this book after my youngest weaned herself; I wound up throwing away a fair bit of milk myself.

The book is well and clearly photographed and the tutorials are full of good step-by-step photos which the reader shouldn't have any troubles following.

The book ends with a short glossary, a resource list with links aimed at readers in North America (though ingredients are available anywhere worldwide on the internet), a troubleshooting FAQ, and an index (missing from the e-ARC, but to be included in the final copy).

Storey has a long history of well researched and presented titles for practical living skills and self sufficiency. This book is a worthy addition.

Five stars. This is a complete tutorial guide with really yummy recipes.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Decadent recipes and user-friendly recipes!
Thanks to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for the opportunity to read and review Milk Soaps by Anne-Marie Faiola!
Split into Beginner, Intermediate and Advance soap making recipes, this book has soap for every skill and a variety of ingredients to please everyone. Milk soaps are creamier, lather more and are better moisturizers than soaps made with water. Animal milk can be used, as well as the milk from seeds, nuts and rice. An alphabetized list of oils describes differences and properties. Adding color and scent fills the next section and helps the soap maker choose ingredients to make the soap that’s best suited to their needs and tastes. Next, detailed recipes finish out the book with a marvelous assortment of practical and beautiful soaps, 5 stars!

I’m a long time soap maker, but I have not played around much with adding milks to soap. After reading this book, I can’t wait to dig out the soap equipment and give it a try.
This book is well written with extensive instructions and gorgeous photographs. The author carefully explains the benefits of the different ingredients and gives a heads up with solutions when something will be tricky to work with. I found that she answered my questions before I even knew to ask them.
Highly recommend!
