Aging takes a lot of grace and humor. I picked this book up because my body is changing, and not in good ways. I was hoping to get some answers because even if I am not in perimenopause now at the age of 44, I soon will be! It's inevitable and rarely talked about. Dr. Garrett does an excellent job of introducing this phase of life in an direct way, while also recognizing the emotional component that women have to deal with as they handle the physical changes in their bodies. The author specializes in hormone management. I appreciate her approach in recognizing the power of lifestyle choices, then the use of natural supplements, then prescription medication, and finally surgery. This approach is not common in the medical community, and Dr. Garrett spends quite a bit of time in this book educating readers in how to have productive conversations with healthcare providers and avoid a do-it-yourself approach to just grabbing supplements off the shelf without research--which could cause more harm than good. She offers specific supplement combination suggestions for a variety of issues and emphasizes that changes in our bodies will happen, but most of the time suffering can be reduced or minimized.
This book has a ton of great reviews and I'm only giving it 3 stars so let me start by saying it might be me more than the book. I'm trying to figure out where exactly I am along the menopause road, closer to the beginning with perimenopause or actually at the beginning of menopause. I started with this book since I wanted to go over the symptoms and get some insight into what others are experiencing and what I can do to stop the hot flashes/night sweats (my main symptom). Well it seems I'm probably either in menopause or at the very end of perimenopause so this didn't help me too much. I found some chapters very repetitive, the author mentioned 34 symptoms (or more) that women could have but never listed them (I expect those might have been in the quiz she tells you to take first so she can get your email), pretty much everything seemed to lead back to estrogen deficiency, she wants everyone to take supplements (she has her own store for you to shop in), and never really gave any ideas for my main symptom (I guess that's more of an actual menopause symptom?). Really the main help this book gave me was seeing that I'm farther into my 'journey' than this book really helps. Also, if you aren't a regular, healthy woman with no mental health issues or obesity, this book isn't going to be that helpful. I've been fat with anxiety, insomnia and depression for more than half my life so all the supplements and vitamins and oils aren't going to do much for me unless I stop all my prescription meds. If you're interested I'm now moving on to The Wisdom of Menopause: Creating Physical and Emotional Health During the Change.
Perimenopause is probably not a word that most women are familiar with, but many may have symptoms beginning in their 30s (while others don’t until their 40s or 50s). Perimenopause spans the period of time when the body’s hormones fluctuate back and forth but before a year has passed since the cessation of menses. I was one of these early perimenopausal women. In fact, I wish I had this book back then because when menopause hit in my early forties, I was shocked; only looking back did I realize that some of those strange 30s changes were actually perimenopause. It would have been nice to know beforehand that such was a possibility; prepared is forearmed.
This is a powerful and empowering book. We are not slaves to our ever-changing perimenopausal hormones (though it seems that way at times), and the author does give solid advice on everything from relationships to hormones to the possible mind, body, and spirit changes that may happen. It is a very positive book, and she is like a wiser, older friend who shares the details with you and clearly wants to help. I encourage every young woman to check out this book, as it is best to enter perimenopause informed. If you're still suffering symptoms even after all is said and done, even older women should read this book.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
After spending almost 5 years wondering what was going on with me and my body - this book helped me to find the answers. This well written book full of useful information and advice has turned out to be a god send. While I received this through Booksprout I stumbled across it on their list of available books and when I read the blurb I could totally relate. The reading the book I could look at what had been happening for me and realise it was not just me thinking something was wrong but here I had something written by a Doctor that helped me to go and talk to my GP about what was going on.
If your period stops well before menopause and you stop sleeping and your body does strange things then this is definitely worth a look at. For me it helped me to have meaningful conversations with my GP and helped put a bunch of odd symptoms together into something to follow up. Thank you for writing this.

I stumbled upon this book for free but it was perfect timing. I just turned 40. The book explains first and foremost the difference between perimenopause and menopause. This is an important distinction. Another important point is made later, that perimenopause is NOT an illness. Even if a doctor confirms you are going through it, it’s not a diagnosis. It’s all completely normal.
I know some things about perimenopause already but I still learned some things from this book. There are more symptoms than just weird periods, irritability, hot flashes and night sweats. Those are the only ones you hear about.
Of course the book doesn’t just go over symptoms. It also discusses various possible treatments and their pros and cons. Natural remedies are discussed as well. This is a good starter resources for those approaching perimenopause.

This book gave me my life back! I just wished I had read it 5 years sooner. You'd be shocked by what can be attributed to hormones and how amazing you can feel once you balance things out. Must read for everyone with ovaries.
An informative must-read. This is an incredibly well- written account of the perils of being a woman. Not only are we hit by our hormones when we reach the totally immature age of anywhere between 11 -16 with embarrassing, painful periods, we have to endure pregnancy and childbirth which although is a blessing but in itself is no picknick. After a few good years of sexual freedom and the joys of being a mother, we try hard not to think of the menopause that is looming over us. That is not enough in itself, because we have perimenopause next, which heralds the coming of a few really unpleasant changes. Dr. Garret didn't hold back on the facts and have given a very detailed account of a whole range of issues that will occur to our bodies, although may affect women in different ways or extent. Oh, dear! The joys of being a woman! However, I think this book should be compulsory reading because knowing and understanding certain changes would save women from many unpleasant issues, like self-doubt, understanding mood swings, altered metabolism, weight gain, un-ovulatory cycles and a whole lot of issues which encompass being a woman. There are some good explanations and advice that will no doubt prove useful to many.

This author speaks to you directly and from personal experience. The tone is more friendly like speaking to your girlfriend rather than the more medical tone from male doctors/authors.
Very informational in a more bite size approach. Good starting point for someone just starting their perimenopause journey.
