Siren

Rate this book
One-click this new mythological romance today! Lorelei has been trapped alone on an island for over twenty years, her siren powers muted, taken from her by a jealous god. When an old ally and occasional enemy comes to Lorelei for help, she’s given a deal in exchange for her freedom and powers returned. With the help of four Navy SEALs, Lorelei gathers old friends and contacts, building an army to take on the god who imprisoned her. As their quest brings them through dangers and intrigue, Lorelei has to decide if she's ready to trust herself and the four men who have quickly come to mean the world to her or if she's better off alone back on her island. This is a reverse harem romance, which means the leading lady doesn't have to choose between love interests. This is a fast-burn, standalone romance. There is MM content in this novel.

Could have done with being longer considering this reads like a standalone

A retelling of one of my favourites!

Siren is a standalone fantasy RH. Is obviously fast paced given it’s a standalone, therefore expect insta-attraction. Now they may not except their connection straight away but it’s all consuming when they do.

I like the magical world and given that it was achieved in this line book I think Helene has done a fantastic job creating this magical world.

The characters are likeable but there isn’t too much depth to them otherwise we would be waiting for a sequel.

I’m not sure I liked the cat and mouse between our heroes/heroines and Ares only because he’s the god of war and probably shouldn’t have lost so epically. Also, the appearance of Thor and Loki whilst created a bit of conflict between Lorelei and her consorts but after that scene we didn’t see much of them. 🤷🏽‍♀️

The main reason behind my rating though is the spelling/grammar errors throughout the book. But if you like the little mermaid you’ll like the twist to this retelling.

If you're looking for characters with personality and subtle development don't read this book.
The main character is some over the top "I can do bad all by myself" character, she spends so long talking about being such a strong an independent woman she forgets to actually display these traits. This can be said about almost all the characters in this book. Instead of putting someone in a situation where they can display their selflessness, kindness, or generosity the author would rather just tell you " this character is the best most brave kind-hearted person in the history of the universe, yet not too kindhearted person you'll ever meet."

While I admit I do prefer a more submissive heroine in these types of books I wouldn't be put off by a dominant one if she were to be well written. What I don't like reading about is a hardened navy seal soldier who is supposed to be brave and heroic, is also somehow an uber submissive and unrealistically understanding. You can have heroes who are brooding and masculine and still be beholden to their wives, but this isn't how you go about it.

Sloppy

Pro:
-slightly different take on the whole siren/mermaid vs Sea Witch concept
Cons:
-lack of world building
-lack of character development
-lack of relationship building
-aspects of sex scenes that aren't possible as written due to physiology
-issues with mixed tenses
-grammar issues left and right
-ridiculous names for Lorelei's 3 friends based on what kind of creature they turn into
Conclusion:
I should've checked my list of authors I didn't intend to read prior to picking this up, I'd have saved myself the aggravation.
