Dr. Julia E. Antoine began writing professionally at a very young age. She began with short stories and has since progressed to a whole lot more. She wrote and published a working curriculum for a career school, a business manual and its answer key, as well as, other literary works. In 2010, not too long after major health issues, she took a different turn, and began writing for fun and enjoyment. She wrote her first children’s book that year, which was immediately followed by a collection of short stories. Her children's books won silver from Mom's Choice Award to wide acclaim. Dr. Antoine currently writes children's books under her given name and romance novels under a pen name.
This is a collection of stories all dealing with the power of a mother’s love and the strength it takes to be a mother. Nine short stories by some of today’s leading women’s fiction authors. Overall, I enjoyed the stories. Some of them I connected with while others I didn’t. This is normal in any anthology. What impressed me most was the emotion that poured from each story. It was beautiful and a true testament to a mother’s love.
The Scent of a Man by Dr. Julia E. Antoine has to be my favorite story. A single mother, Danielle, longs for the time she spent in Alaska. She buys a property, sight-unseen, and moves her and her teenage daughter to their new house. What she doesn’t realize is she’s putting her own daughter’s life in jeopardy and making her live in a haunted house. Will she pack up and move or will she stay and rid her Alaskan home of an angry spirit?
I really enjoyed this story. It has all the elements I love in a haunting and then some. I loved the descriptive narration and could picture Danielle’s Alaska with precision. Realistic ghost story and the isolation was keenly felt.
If you’re looking for an emotional read on mothers and a mother’s love, pick up The Heart of the Matter: A Mother’s Love today. It would make a great gift, too.
This book is a great read covering so many different aspects of motherhood - paranormal, humour, post-war and love lost but in every case, the strong bond of motherhood shines through. Great value from bestselling authors and a great gift for any mother.
This book is a collection of nine short stories by eight authors. They all revolve around the theme of mothers and motherhood. Some explore a person’s history with their mother while others look at the process of becoming a parent—from those still struggling with the idea about whether to embark on that journey to others who are struggling to make it happen. Some stories also deal with the act of mothering and sometimes how far a woman will go because of her children. One even takes place in a fantasy world! Each story is a unique window onto what it means to be a mother or mothering influence in another's life. As these are short stories, they can be read in around an hour or so or less. The perfect little gift to yourself when you can grab a moment and immerse yourself in a brief story.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
What would a mother do when she has to choose between career and motherhood? What would a mother do when the man who broke her heart years ago comes back to her seeking refuge? What would a mother do when she has to save her crumbling marriage just for the sake of her kids? What would a mother do when her past comes back haunting her perfectly built life? You will get all the answers inside the pages of this marvelous anthology. The authors of this anthology have poured their hearts and souls out bringing you stories about mothers. Mothers who stood the test of time. Mothers who fought with grave circumstances. And mothers who went to lengths to carve a better and safe future for their children. A mother does a lot for her child. And this anthology celebrates that very emotions of motherhood. An emotion which fills the heart of every woman the day she becomes mother. I loved reading this book and enjoyed all the stories. Though all stories are beautiful, my favorites were The Scent of a Man, One Night of Love, and Holding on to Love.
This anthology tries to ask the question, “Is it possible to have many mothers?” There’s the one who birth you and then there are all the women who touched your life even in the most minuscule way. Nine authors got together to bring you this collection of stories. They range from award-winning and best-selling authors, to a single debut author. They come to you from across the globe: India, England, The Caribbean, America, New Zealand and Spain. Each of these stories demonstrate, “nobody leaves a more permanent mark on us than our mothers—and, as these nine moving stories prove, no two mom-daughter dynamics are exactly alike…..” Enjoy, The HEART of The Matter: A Mother's Love, a continuous reading pleasure.
