Kasim and his friends aren't much of a gang. They're not like Crips or Bloods, they're just a bunch of guys who hang together. But that doesn't stop the Parkside Prep guys when they decide to clean up the Edge.
this book is about a group of friends who people think they are apart of a gang and that another group of rich kids from the edge of there district wants to get rid of them. So one of the guys called mouse gets jumped by the rich kids and that is what makes the rest of his friends mad. So Kasim steps up cause he's the leader of them and tells them that they will fight the rich kids. So the fight was set and it was suppose to be a clean fight until Lex the leader of the rich kids is losing the fight and gets a weapon until the cops were coming. But Kasim wants to finish this once and for all and Lex sets up another fight and when everyone was there Kasim said that it should be me and you Lex and Lex agreed. Will the fight was going on Kasim had the upper hand until Lex went back to his car and pulled a gun, Kasim charged him and Lex shot twice. Kasim fell to the ground with two shots to his chest and that is where Kasim life was taken. Later on Lex and his friends were captured by the cops for murder and Kasim's group wasn't the same with out him.
I taught this book. My students loved it, but I thought it was just okay. Definitely targeted towards teenagers, but a little heavy on the dialogue, and the characters were a little too one-dimensional in my opinion. The action scenes were quite detailed and nice. You could feel the element of danger when someone was swinging a knife or attacking someone with a belt. I know we're talking about a HIP book here and not William Shakespeare, but I found it difficult to relate with any given character. Some characters (I'm looking at you, Bruno) barely seem to exist within the storyline.
Still, it's worth a look, especially for teenagers. It probably won't expand any horizons unless it's in the hands of someone who hasn't read a book in a good long while.
