The Sisters Tales

Rate this book
In the aftermath of the Black Dunes War, the kingdom was a mere shadow of its former glory. Although victorious, it was at all too great a cost. Widows and orphans were to be found throughout the land. Many of these sought a meagre existence in the capital city, swelling its population.

The city itself was full of contrasts. The palace and university quarters continued to thrive, as did the market precinct near New Guildhall. Much of the rest of the metropolis had descended into squalor, however. This was especially true in the districts of The Alleys, and Back Lane.

The Alleys was the “shadier” part of the capital. Brothels, ale houses, and gambling dens abounded there. The narrow ways were often awash with refuse both literal and human. The Back Lane was, in fact, little more than a shanty-town despite being within the city walls. Many of the buildings there were on the brink of collapse, but it was here that many of the kingdom’s refugees clung to life.

It is precisely in these latter environs that a disparate band of women made a stand against their misfortunes, and set out to determine their own fates. These heroic, or at least anti-heroic, souls were collectively known as “The Sisters.”

Dungeon-crawler meets fantasy adventure

This reads like a fantasy role playing game where you first meet the characters, learn their special skills, and then set off on a quest. In this case a major treasure hunting expedition with a variety of minor conflicts mixed in. I enjoyed the author's attention to detail. There is a whole word to explore, and we are brought into shops, taverns, towers and strongholds with twisting turns and antechambers. The author is particularly clever and detailed with respect to the variety of traps and a puzzles the character's encounter, making me wonder about their real world "expertise".

My only critique is that the sisters themselves are mainly differentiated by their unique skills (or powers), and no so much in personality. They all seem to speak about what is happening somewhat "matter-of-fact", which are missed opportunities to entertain the reader even more.

All in all, I did enjoy this; the classes of characters, conflicts, monsters, and of course the "traps". I suspect any fan of role-playing games or dungeon crawlers, would enjoy it the same!

R.V. Mitchell has come through for us again! I was a HUGE fan of Dungeons and Dragons as a child, and this book made me feel as if I was back in my cousin's basement role playing and beating monsters and solving puzzles.

My hat goes off to this writing duo for this beautifully written masterpiece! Can't wait to see where their creativity takes us next!

A fantasy novel about a group of feisty women who go on a quest to find the treasure on a map they come into possession of. This is the first novel in a series.
