Amazon.com Review Whether you consider angels to be divine messengers, spiritual guides, or the stuff of legend, you will find something to marvel at in Chuck Fischer's beautifully illustrated A Pop-Up Book. Fischer's original art, inspired by classic images from art history, is crafted into astoundingly intricate three-dimensional pop-ups with fold-outs and moveable parts. Angels brings to life the most captivating stories of these celestial beings, from the angels of the zodiac to Biblical angels to angels in the arts and popular culture. Much like its subject, A Pop-Up Book inspires awe and wonder and is a unique gift book for all ages.
Soon after graduating with a BFA in Advertising Art from the University of Kansas, I moved to New York City to pursue a career in the creative arts. First I tried the acting biz. I had countless walk-on parts on the soap opera All My Children and what I thought would be my "big break" in the movies. I was chosen by Woody Allen for a speaking part in his movie, Stardust Memories, but I was a victim of the proverbial "lost on the cutting room floor". Time to re-evaluate my "acting career".
Fortunately, friends of mine working in the rarified world of high-end interior design, encouraged me to take on decorative painting projects. I was soon commissioned to design and paint murals in some of the finest residences in the world. One of the first things I learned working with America's top decorators, (Sister Parish and Albert Hadley in particular) and their clients, was the importance of a library full of illustrated books for reference and inspiration.
I started building my collection of illustrated books, (numbering in the hundreds today) and as Thomas Jefferson said, "I cannot live without books".
There isn't a design project of mine, from my china patterns for Lenox, to my wallpaper and fabric collections at Brunschwig and Fils and Schumacher that hasn't started with me looking at books.
Today, much of my creative energy is focused on creating unique pop-up books filled with my illustrations, photographs, historical facts and information. My first two pop-up books dealt with American architecture, but my new book, CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK is somewhat of a departure and a harbinger of new projects to come.
Each spread in my pop-up book offers something new and exciting through illustrated 3-D pop-ups that are representative of meticulous research and knowledge of historic art and design. In addition to using my own collection of books for research and inspiration, I spent a great deal of time at the library at the Cooper Hewitt Museum perusing their vast collection of illustrated pop-up books dating from the 13th century, and I have always had good luck finding unique images at the New York Public Library's Picture Collection.
Chuck Fischer is a New York City artist whose paintings hang in some of the finest residences in the world. Many of his designs are in the permanent collection of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. He is the author of two previous pop-up books, The White House and Great American Houses and Gardens.
When I was little, I used to get a thrill out of pop-up books. They really brought the story to life. However, with Angels, I was simply stunned! The workmanship of these pop-ups is astounding. They are rich in color and detail and it's definitely not a book I'd let the young ones play with.
Angels is divided into three sections: Messengers, a Hierarchy of Angels, and Secular Angels. Each section has the most intricate pop-ups along with some movable parts. It also has either a small pamphlet describing the angels, whether myth or legend, and their different stories.
This book would be the perfect gift for the holidays, book or angel collectors, or those that want something unique, yet beautiful. I am not going to be parting with mine, I could look at it for hours - holding the book this way and that to let all the rich details sink. I don't want to miss anything. As a believer in Angels, I found this book with its intricate and rich designs and wonderful descriptions a marvel, and I'm sure you will too!
ANGELS by Chuck Fischer is an extraordinary book. When it came in the mail, Carl chuckled because I’d received a pop-up book. Once I opened it and started turning the pages, he stopped laughing and starting gasping. I cannot describe just how gorgeous and stunning this book is. This is not a kids’ pop-up book. The paper engineer on this project was Bruce Foster and he does a phenomenal job – I cannot begin to imagine the time and work involved in creating something like this.
This book is more than brilliant illustrations and pop-up work, though. The text, written by Curtis Flowers, is chock full of information about angels of all kinds. This book has them all – Eastern Angels, Mythological Angels, Biblical Angels, Secular Angels and Angels of the Zodiac.
ANGELS is a fascinating book and I’ve discovered something new every time I’ve picked it up. I learned that Archangel Michael is the greatest archangel in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. I also learned that most Biblical Angels are male. My only complaint with the book is a very minor one - some of the text is difficult to read because of the pop-ups.
If you know anyone who loves angels or art, ANGELS would make a fabulous gift. I know I would be thrilled to receive something like this.
