Even though this is a work of historical fiction, the storyline really challenged my knowledge of Russian history. I thoroughly enjoyed working my intellectual muscles pulling out the nuggets of events as they correspond with historical record. At first I planned on donating the book upon reading it. Now I will keep it in order to read again at a future date. Please do not pass up the opportunity to read this work of literary art. I plan on checking out other books by the author. You may want to do so as well.
From a journal entry dated 10/17/76: "I also read 'Three Lives for the Czar' by Stephanie Plowman which is very interesting historical fiction about the reign of Nicholas II & a devastating condemnation of Nicholas & Alexandra. Reading it was a lot more powerful than a biography or movie could be as far as the civil unrest, etc. because it became so personal as I identified with the characters."
