Jay has a nice wife and a nice life with a nice house and a nice job in the very nice city of Seattle. Except he’s beginning to suspect that none of that is true. If he has a wife, why can’t he remember marrying her? And why does trying to remember make his head hurt?

Deron knows he shouldn’t be in Seattle. Giving into his need to check on the man who once belonged to him could put a complicated cross-agency investigation at risk. All he wants is one little peek. He didn’t expect Jay to recognize him or for the two of them to get shot at on the streets of Seattle.

Jay’s suffering from a case of amnesia only he can cure and is at the heart of a mystery only he can solve. Too bad he doesn’t know any of that. But there’s one thing he does know: Deron. His memory may have been removed, but his soul will never forget its mate.

Can he remember everything else in time to save both their lives and possibly an entire country?

2★'s = it was ok.

This was just a tad bit too out there for me. I found the subject interesting and intriguing, but, even though I suspended belief as much as possible, I still was just shaking my head at the whole setup. None of this would ever happen and I think it is best I just leave it there. I don't want to spoil anyone and feel like anything I say would ruin the unraveling of the "mystery".

I think some people might be into this. I think it has a refreshing concept and the politics are very timely, it just did not work for me. As a fan of crime dramas I just feel like I couldn’t help but rip this apart.

The romance at first had me. Really. I was ready to forgive a bunch of the other stuff just to see how it played out between these two because I believed they were soul mates but then, well, then there was doubt and I lost whatever connection I originally felt.

Oh, and can we get rid of the whole Bae thing? Do adults really use this term? I hate it and in this book it is a thing and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to bear it. I did, barely.

So, overall, a great idea just to me not the best execution. I never believed it for a second.

First part of the book was ok. I was curious what was happening. There was a bit of mystery around Jay. But both Jay and Deron's erratic behavior was a bit over the top for me. When the crucial plot twist came, I was disappointed. It was a bit unbelievable, and when the reason for it was revealed it was frankly not what I expected. I started skipping pages after 45%. There was a lot of sex but I didn't feel the connection between Deron and Jason that they kept mentioning. There was little piece after little piece piled on top of other little pieces of information that, I think, were supposed to make it like a puzzle to figure out but it looked like such a mess to me, I wasn't even curious about it. The end was very anticlimactic but by that point I really didn't care. The book should have been great but I think there was just too many unnecessary characters and information crammed in it. Not my cup of tea, sorry.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.75 stars

Oh, this story was such a thrill ride, I was captivated throughout the book! Tanya Chris writes in many genres, but her suspense stories are some of my favorites. The early part of this story, in particular, was so intense and exciting as Jay slowly starts to realize his life is not what it seems. Chris builds the suspense so well as we know Jay has amnesia, and we know that he is connected to Deron, but Jay is unaware of both of these things. We also have no idea how he lost his memory or why Deron is keeping his distance. But Jay seeing Deron is like pulling on a thread and watching things unravel as that is the catalyst to the whole mystery breaking apart.

The author also paces the story so nicely. The early part of the book focuses on Jay slowly realizing his life is not all as it seems and coming to the growing awareness that something is going on, but he is not sure what. It is thrilling and exciting and I could not put the book down. Then the pace slows a little as we get to the revelations, as Jay (along with the reader) learns just how he lost his memory and why that is significant not just to him, but to a major law enforcement investigation that has huge political consequences. Then we are thrust back into the suspense and excitement as it all comes to a climax and Jay’s life is in danger and he doesn’t know where to turn.

Read Jay’s review in its entirety here.

This was my first Tanya Chris book, but it won't be my last! What a great, twisty-turny mystery. This was a really neat take on the amnesia trope that kept me guessing all the way through. I definitely recommend it!

I think in part it might have been the lack of adequate world building and atmosphere (i.e., Bronx neighborhood... where were the smells of baking bread? old men arguing? sun-drenched brownstones?) that spoiled the story for me. The lack thereof made this story seem a bit dull. A bit less real. There were incidents and passages that seemed highly unlikely. I felt pretty ambivalent about both main characters, and there was no strong secondary cast. To be fair there were parts of the story that were indeed suspenseful and believable. All in all, taken as a whole, I found the book to be only fair-to-middlin' and I don't think I'd read any additional stories by this author. She isn't my cuppa.

This author has been hit or miss for me, and as much as I wanted to love this one, I don't think it quite worked.

The concept requires a bit of suspension of disbelief, which I was willing to do... to a point. The thing is, if you're going to undergo this experimental ~treatment~ to overwrite your memories with new ones, it needs to be for a freaking good reason, and the case/motivation here was so flimsy and silly that I couldn't get past it. The stakes felt SO low to me, that I couldn't believe somebody would go to such lengths. I also felt the choice of dual POV here was really odd. Part of the ~point~ of the amnesia/memory loss was that the Jay doesn't entirely know who to trust, including having some doubts about his lover Deron. But then we get Deron's POV and know he's a good guy, thus ruining all sense of tension and suspense. I also wanted a bit more nuance and subtlety. From the beginning when Jay starts to realize his life isn't what it seems, everything felt a little heavy-handed and obvious, whereas I wanted a more creepy sensation of wrongness. And the timeline for everything was odd, too. From how long Deron and Jay were together before he had to rewrite his memories, to how long he was living undercover--it felt a little short, which again, lowered the stakes for me.

I enjoyed the characters more or less, and this concept had potential, but the execution fell short.

Very different in a good way!

This is sort of a political thriller but the political aspect only gets addressed in passing, since it’s hidden political information that drives this suspense plot. The psychology behind Jason/Jay’s amnesia is improbable but based on logic that makes the premise believable. Including recognizing the pull Jay feels towards Deron without knowing who he is. The action plot is very clever and I wish so hard that some of it was real, which you’ll understand if you live in the USA, maybe even if you don’t.

It was exciting in a few parts but it did lack the edge of my seat tension I’d have liked. I also can’t call this a romance, really. Even with Deron’s occasional perspective added to Jay’s, I didn’t feel much empathy for them as a couple. There isn’t much other than a couple of sex scenes and some recovered memories from Jay to show a connection between them, until the final chapters. Random recollections weren’t enough and a flashback, or prologue about them as a couple would have helped, I think. I enjoyed it nevertheless, since suspense and mystery are my favored genre and that part was well done.

Forget I Told You is a standalone mystery/romantic suspense novel with an intriguing premise that, while it has a number of flaws, is a fast-paced and suspenseful story that kept me guessing and eagerly turning the pages.  It does require a fairly large suspension of disbelief, but no more than that needed for many of today’s films and TV shows.

Therapist Jay Burgess has, as the book synopsis says, “a nice wife and a nice life with a nice house and a nice job in the very nice city of Seattle.” So why is it that he’s starting to feel that no matter how “nice” his life is… it’s not his life at all?  He’s married to a lovely woman he’s not the slightest bit attracted to, and not only that, he can’t remember their wedding, or the proposal or indeed anything about his life other than a series of facts and figures he’s started to think of as “recordings”.  He knows his parents are dead but can’t remember how he felt when they died; he knows the date of his wedding, but not how he felt on his wedding day… nothing about his life makes sense until he sees the man with the snake tattoo in the coffee shop.  Over the past few months, Jay has come to the realisation that he’s almost certainly gay -  he and his wife have been discussing divorce – and now, more than ever, he’s convinced of it. On this particular day, he’s drawn to the guy in the coffee shop in a way he can’t remember being drawn to anyone; it makes no sense, but Jay has to talk to him and follows him outside hoping to get his number and maybe go for a drink together.  But the guy – who gives his name as Deron – shuts him down and walks away, telling Jay he should go back to his wife.

Deron Jackson knows he shouldn’t be in Seattle but he can’t resist the opportunity to see the man he loves.  He hadn’t intended for Jay to see him, much less speak to him – and clearly Jay is starting to remember things he shouldn’t, things which, if he remembers them fully, could put him in serious danger.  Another chance encounter a few days later sees them end up in bed in Deron’s hotel room – a seriously bad move which Deron tries to play down by being dismissive and sending Jay on his way as soon as possible.  Jay is persistent and tries to persuade Deron that they deserve a chance to explore this thing between them; he doesn’t understand what Deron tells him about it not being safe for them to know each other – until they’re shot at.

This is an entertaining story with a fairly unusual premise based around memory tampering (it reminded me a bit of Total Recall in that respect!).  The author does a good job of conveying Jay’s uncertainty and his suspicions of those around him as bits of his actual memory begin to bleed through the false ones that have been implanted.  I was glued to the pages wanting to know who had messed with Jay’s memory and why; the answer is unexpected and the author skilfully builds the suspense throughout the first part of the novel leading up to that reveal.  It’s all pretty implausible, but I enjoyed the political thriller aspect of the story (despite its being a little underdeveloped) and liked the extra twist the author throws in at the end when Jay becomes unsure who he can really trust.

But the romantic angle of the story works less well, principally because most of the relationship building takes place off screen before the book starts, so once Jay and Deron get together most of their time together is spent with Deron worrying about Jay remembering too much and trying to protect him. Oh, and their having lots of sex, of course ;) Perhaps it would have worked better had the author incorporated some flashbacks of their lives before, so readers had a real feel for what the couple had lost, but as it is, there’s a lot of telling rather than showing.  The concept of a love so strong it can’t be suppressed and the idea that the heart will always recognise its mate are extremely romantic of course, but there wasn’t a lot of romantic tension or, I have to say, chemistry between the couple.  Plus I absolutely hated Deron’s pet name for Jay – Jay-Bae - which was really infantile.

I really liked the premise of the novel, even though things fell down somewhat in the execution, so I’d give Forget I Told You a recommendation with caveats.

This is the kind of book where it's more about the journey than the ending. The mystery while predictable is fun to watch it unfold.

The ending however, just feel kind of meh after everything.

Looking for a suspenseful, intriguing and unique twist on amnesia? Then Forget I Told You by Tanya Chris is for you, reinforcing that the heart knows what it wants, and true love is strong enough to conquer even logical thought, to demolish even the toughest defenses.

Jay cannot seem to put his finger on the niggling feeling something with his life is not right. He has a successful career, attentive wife, and nice house. But why can’t he quite remember getting married? Moreover, why do things from his younger days seem real but recent events seem off?

Deron is broken hearted, lost, and empty. Each day he spends knowing Jay is out there, but off limits, is pure torture. Deron knows he shouldn’t check on Jay and that his interference severely jeopardizes “the plan”. On the other hand, he needs to ensure himself that Jay is okay, then he will move on. Best laid plans and all.

Stopping for a cup of coffee, Jay encounters a mysteriously captivating man who immediately calls to him. Logic and reason elude him for the attraction. The man is a stranger. Nevertheless, a series of questions torment and consume Jay.

Why does he pull at my insides?
What is so unique about this man?
Why does my heart feel like it knows him?
Am I gay?

Forget I Told You is simple and quite complex at the same time. Simply, Deron’s actions inadvertently create a crack in “the plan”. Complexly, the suspense builds as layers peel away revealing the truth of “the plan”.

Tanya Chris unveils an ability to seamlessly weave corruption, mystery, suspense, and intrigue with an exquisite and steamy romance. Forget I Told You provides an entertaining experience that captivates from beginning to end, as you quickly turn the pages to discover the next twist, the next heartbreak, the next realization you cannot help anxiously anticipating.

There are a lot of movies that toy with amnesia: Memento, Regarding Henry, The Bourne Series, Overboard, and even Finding Nemo, to mention a few. But nothing compares to Forget I Told You. Sure. these are all great flicks. But the underlying theme of Forget I Told You is unique and demonstrates the length the heart will go to protect those it loves.

I wish this book had come with a warning that it involved a political plot. I was looking forward to an interdepartmental crime drama/thriller. The whole whistleblower thing ticked me off. There is enough of that stuff being shoved down my throat in real life and I don’t want it bleeding into my reading, which is supposed to be my happy place to escape. While I enjoyed the characters and the basic premise of the story, the whole political bent was not my thing at all.

There were multiple times where several characters were in a conversation and it wasn’t clear who was speaking. Just lines of dialogue between the NYPD captain, FBI director, several agents and the 2 MCs. Who the heck was saying what? Add in the fact that one MC, I’m guessing to be in his late 20s or early 30s based on the fact that he’s made the rank of detective, calls the other one Bae 🙄, and this just wasn’t my cup of tea. I’m glad this book was free on Amazon when I got it.

This book is so much more than I expected. Despite, what I had heard about this book, I figured it would be about 2 people reconnecting after one of them somehow loses there memory. And what I feel this author does very well, is creating believable, authentic characters and then connecting them together so beautifully. Relationship-building is where I thought the author shined, but now I am not so sure. There is so much more to this story. The mystery at the root of this story, is revealed so gradually, I was sitting on the edge of my seat. We, as the audience, finds out things at the same time as Jason, the character who has lost his memory. As Jason remembers who he is as well as what happened and what is happening around him...the scope of the story seems to become larger and larger. I don't want to say anymore, what little I can safely say has already been said in the book's official blurb. And yes, she did a beautiful job with the relationship, as usual. This was a great book all around!

A solid 4 stars
As usual with Tanya Chris, the writing is good.
Even though not new, the amnesia plot is treated cleverly and the reader wants to know more.
A slight problem with the procedural/political context which IMO was a bit superficial and not really thought through.
Still a good book I would recommend.

Forget I Told You

I don’t think I’ve read this author before and I’ve had this book a little while but decided to try it before diving into another series. It was an interesting concept, probably not very probable, but interesting. I wanted to read it for the mystery impact which was a little lacking. Sure there was mystery but it didn’t feel like a big piece of the story and it should have.

Also, something that bothered me and took me out of the story was 86% in the author referred to hospital johnny’s. I had no idea what this was. I looked it up and it’s what the UK calls hospital gowns. But this book doesn’t take place in the UK.

I just finished this and I'm still humming with excitement. This book is a thriller, no other way to describe it. From the first page to the last one , tha author managed to keep on my toes, waiting to see what happens next.
Reading Forget I Told You is like watching an action movie with the added bonus of having the insight into what the characters are feeling. Deron and Jay's POV increase the experience, while accompanying them through dangerous situations, overcoming mind blocks and reconnecting with each other.
Tanya Chris surely knows how to offer the reader an emotional, exciting ride and I can't recommend this book enough.

“You can choose to forget or choose to remember...The thing is…The mind can forget, but the heart never will.” ~ Mary Elizabeth Francisco

Jay, of ‘Forget I Told You’ by Tanya Chris, doesn’t understand why he feels so unsettled all the time. He should be happy, but he’s not. Constantly, Jay runs into things he can’t remember - fundamental things like why he got married, when was the last time he had had sex with his wife, etcetera. Jay is constantly plagued with dreams and half memories that he can’t explain. After a chance meeting with a man named Deron, causes an inexplicable tsunami of emotion and desire that Jay becomes obsessed with figuring out.

Everything is fine until Jay decides that he is gay and wants a divorce. In an effort to ‘explore’ his newly discovered sexuality, Jay goes to a gay bar. He’s ‘hit on’ a guy who he is considering taking up on his offer when, suddenly, a man asks him what he is doing there. Jay turns to see who is speaking to him, and it’s Deron, the guy he met earlier. The other guy leaves and Derron takes over. Jay can’t figure out why he’s so upset, but, since he wants to ‘explore’ his sexuality with Derron anyway, he’s secretly delighted.

Under the guise of letting Jay talk to him about being gay, Deron takes Jay to a restaurant where they share cheesecake and talk for a while. Deron tells him he needs to leave and that Jay needs to go home… As Deron walks away, Jay suddenly remembers that he didn’t get his number and rushes after him. When Jay catches up and asks for his number, Deron won’t give him, saying he doesn’t need it. Jay insists that he still has questions about being gay that Deron can’t answer in public. Deron tries to brush him off, but Jay ‘threatens’ him, saying that if he won’t help him, he’s sure there is someone else at the bar who will. This aggravates Deron, who, against is better judgement, finally gives in and takes Jay up to his room. They have a sensual encounter, that Jay finds strangely intimate for sex with a stranger. He never wants it to end. The next morning, as they are leaving the hotel, shots are fired; everyone scatters and Deron covers Jay’s body with his own. They shelter in one of the building’s alcoves Deron pulls out a gun and, with the admonition to stay there, he leaves.

This story left me breathless. It’s got everything, suspense, adventure, sex, and more. The characters are absolutely awesome, each filled with such depth, particularly Deron and Jay. I guesses who the ’bad guy’ was almost immediately, but there were lots of ‘dead herrings’ that kept me in suspense, leaving me to wonder if I were misjudging characters and situations. Thanks, Tanya, for an exhilarating read. I think this would make a great movie!

This story delves into areas usually reserved for SciFi but does it in a way that isn't SciFi at all. The layering of tension and suspense was magnificent. By the climax, I was completely paranoid and didn't trust ANYONE. There was plenty of evidence throughout the story to be able to have seen the big reveal coming but it was glossed over on purpose and we were redirected to other options. This really was a perfect blend of suspense and romance.

My only complaint was how fast the relationship developed between Deron and Jay, which isn't uncommon in Romance at all but because we were told about it rather than experiencing it, I had a hard time believing it. Not so much that I couldn't enjoy the story but when I found out how long they'd actually known each other and how long they were separated, I honestly was staggered. It's such a short period of time. I'm not sure how she could have done that differently because we needed things to start from the point they did for the suspense to work.

Aside from that, the pacing of the revelation of details was perfect. Each little tidbit was obvious without being condescendingly so. We learned information at the same time as and in the same way that Jay did. We were given the same opportunity to go, "wait, what?" just like he did. We had all the clues and information that Jay had and could draw our own conclusions though we were redirected and steered toward certain conclusions but so was he.

There was plenty of sexual tension despite a lack of explicit sex scenes. The few that were there were hot without being overly detailed or drawn out. They focused more on introspection than on the mechanics of the act, which I enjoyed.

Overall, this was a stellar suspense story and a great romance.

Well, honestly a friend of mine introduced me to Tanya Chris works.I started to read after a long day.thought I read a few nights....but I stayed up till the wee hours till the end,put down for the next night..NO WAY!..the first pages were ok..but then the story, the characters started to unfold and step by step the amazing Tanya Chris introduce Jay Bae and Deron to us.I love the lines and between the lines, that how vulnerable Jay is because of his mental condition, but how determined to fight for what feels right.I loved the little twists all the way..How the author demonstrate, define tha case of Amnesia. How a person try to fight against and live with it the same time.

The love between these two is sweet, strong..Soulmates!How Deron puts Jay first. How worried about what will happen with Jay if the memories come back with force..How deep the love is..

I honoured to read this book..I really enjoyed and love this book.
Thank you Tanya Chris for the chance ..
Honestly at the end I was waiting a little bigger BOOM, but I understand why was it a little "mellow"..politics..we know, right?!
First and last the conclusion....well done!!!!

Recommend this book to every reader..
By the way..I love the nickname Jay-Bae.

This is such a stand out author for me. Every time I read one of her stories I think she can’t top herself and yet once I start one of her stories I just can’t set it down. This is another that from the beginning had me hooked. I wish I could do more justice to this story but I’m not a writer but I sure have strong feelings for this story. When I started the story I felt it was about a relationship that started from a strong instant connection between Jay and Deron. Then as that starts to take a uncertain direction the mystery part starts. I don’t know which kept me more riveted the romance or the mystery but together I love this story. The twists and clues revealed led me in one direction and then the story took on more issues. I kept wondering if there was more behind Deron agreeing to Jay’s experiment. Why was Jay so secretive. How did Sarita actually fit in here. Deron’s occupation brought issues to the relationship. The sex was more than a little hot and I laughed at the explanation of nickname Silas. I’m not a read again type person but this is one of the few stories I feel I will go back and read again.

Tanya Chris blew me away with this heart pounding, heart stopping, and beyond suspenseful read. I was on the edge of my seat, holding my breath at times and wanting to knowing everything but not wanting it to end.

The character development in this book is flawless. Wow did the main characters have heat and the secondary characters all were perfectly necessary to the plot. I felt like I could have dropped right into the story the character development and world building was so well done.

I devoured this book, captivating isn’t even a strong enough word. It is apparent that Tanya Chris poured her heart into it and truly took time to research and develop such a complex and compelling plot. It kept me guessing the entire time and I never knew which way it would turn. Nothing prepared me for this level of thrilling, mysterious and absolutely impeccable read. I highly recommend this book and I’ll be putting it in my frequent reread pile.

No questioning the amazing versatility of this author.
There is not a single topic or trope that Tanya has not tried and executed with brilliance. Anything from sweet YA to BDSM to cloak & dagger espionage...
and she nails it beautifully every... Single... Time!

I must be honest, and confess, this is not my first choice when it comes to subject matter in the books I enjoy. A lot of the political stuff goes a bit over my head😂... But this is just me. This, by no means lessens the fact that this book is a masterpiece.
It is a deeply complicated story, and not a quickie, comfortable read, but it is, nonetheless, loaded with everything you're looking for in a wonderfully steamy mm romance.
Nice work, Tanya!

I adore Tanya Chris's books! Each new story is a total surprise, including this one. Forget I Told You is a suspenseful thriller with action and twist after twist as Jay, the confused and frustrated hero, works his way through a type of amnesia and danger after a patient dies under questionable circumstances and a political corruption cover-up makes him question just who he can trust. Deron, his love interest, is tested over and over but remains rock solid behind Jay. This story has somewhat less steam than I've usually found in the author's recent works, but I loved their connection. As Chris's thrillers go, for me this ranks right up there with The High Lonesome -- one of my favorites -- but with the heat dialed back a notch or two.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Tense, intriguing twist on an old theme

Amnesia is an old romance trope, but I don't think I've ever seen it done quite like this.
I can't say why, because that would spoil everything, do you'll just have to read it to see.
The tension is brilliantly managed, with that creepy Memento-esque where the you experience everything along with the protagonist: inability to tell fact from fiction, inability to know who to trust.
It's really well done and I enjoyed Jay and Derin finding their way back to each other.
My one critique would be that it wasn't really clear how Pinocchio managed to get all the info they did, considering; there was also something about the ending that left me dissatisfied, not sure if it felt a bit too neatly wrapped up or I was disappointed that the identity of Pinocchio felt underwhelming because of the aforementioned.

Thankfully, the story is so well imagined and the tension so well managed that I was able to overlook these minor issues.

Oh my god what a story from start to finish it had me captivated. I was seconded guessing everything and everyone.

Jay is married to a woman but why does it not feel right. Something is slightly off. But even more so when he spots someone in a Seattle coffee shop and he can’t get the mysterious man out of him mind. Something is playing on his mind about this guy.

Deron knows it’s a bad idea going to Seattle but he just has to see him once just to make sure he is ok. It’s not like he will recognise him anyway. But when it does the blocks on the not so perfectly formed plan start to crumble and Jay could be in danger all over again.

This is a story of true love letting nothing get in the way. It’s gripping from start to finish.
An excellent read and something completely different. Definitely recommend.
