AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

A very sad Badger recruits Bear to find his lost teddy. Bear is determined to find it and goes up trees and underwater in his search. Badger tags along and has so much fun in the new locations that he forgets all about the reason why they are out exploring. In the end, they never find the teddy, but it doesn’t matter to Badger. Bear may not feel the same.

This is a book that relies on the partnership between words and pictures to tell the whole story, which I consider a strength of the book. That said, without an adult reader with the student, the point of the book may be entirely missed. The illustrations are minimalistic and well done and could be used in lessons on friendship and mindset.

Bear finds Badger in tears over loosing his Teddy. Bear is determined to help find him and he is thorough in the search. He sticks his head in the pond to ask a fish if it has seen Teddy, climbs perilously far on a bending tree limb to ask Squirrel about him, and even looks under a rock. The charming illustrations tell the reader that Bear is more dedicated to the search than Badger who finds the exploring fun! This sweet story nears an end with Bear feeling sad about not finding Teddy and mystified that Badger has forgotten about him. A charming double spread depicts Badger pulling Bear by the hand to chase the ladybug, a constant in the story. A giggle for children and adults as we are reminded of the happy truth behind the power of distraction in soothing little one's sadness. Big ones too!

I'm sure many parents can relate to this story. Badger is bereft because he's lost his stuffed animal toy. Bear is determined to help, and he enlists several other animals in his search. They look everywhere with no success. Finally, when he goes to Badger to tell him that he's failed at his mission, Badger no longer even remembers what he's been missing. Apparently, that teddy bear wasn't quite as important as it seemed at the start of the book. The simple text is accompanied by large illustrations that show the animals determinedly searching for the missing object, even looking under things. This one might be a good one to share with youngsters who've been in the same situation, but honestly, the book will appeal to adults more than those young readers.

Badger is sad because he has lost his teddy. Bear tries to help by looking in all the places Badger has been recently and asking all the other animals if they have seen Badger's teddy. In the end, Bear is sorry that he could not find Badger's teddy, but Badger isn't sad any more and doesn't seem to remember that his teddy is missing at all. (Could Bear be his teddy? Not explicitly said, but might be why Badger isn't sad.)

I am so sorry to say that I didn't like this one. The story, the illustrations, everything just fell completely flat. *Not to mention that some of the character illustrations look scary and not at all like what they are supposed to be portraying.

Badger and Bear look all over for Badger's missing teddy. They look all over, and when they can't find it, it seems Badger has forgotten it was missing in the first place. The illustrations were a bit bizarre for me

The bear has a human face, and it's a little freaky.
