I REVIEWED THIS BOOK ONE YEAR AGO WHEN IT WAS ISSUED IN HARDBACK. IT IS NOW BEING RELEASED IN TRADE PAPER AND MY OPINION OF THE BOOK REMAINS STRONGER THAN EVER. THIS IS, WITHOUT A DOUBT, THE BEST BOOK THAT I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW FROM WORTHY PUBLISHING. I AM BLOWN AWAY WITH THE AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE AND VALUABLE INFORMATION THAT I'VE GAINED IN THESE PAGES. PART TWO OF THE BOOK REMAINS MY FAVORITE PORTION, WHERE DR. COLBERT GOES INTO SPECIFIC DISEASES AND CONDITIONS. MY BATTLE WITH STAGE 4 CANCER HAS BEEN RE-STARTED AS OF DECEMBER 30, 2016. MY COLON REMAINS CANCER-FREE AND I THANK AND PRAISE GOD FOR THAT. MY BATTLE AGAINST THE LIVER CANCER HAS MOVED TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND, IN ADDITION TO NEW ROUNDS OF CHEMOTHERAPY, WE ARE ALSO COMMENCING GENOMIC TESTING AND TREATMENTS.
ALL THESE FACTORS BRING TO EVEN BRIGHTER LIGHT THAT ADDITIONAL THERAPIES, LIKE THE MODIFIED MEDITERRANEAN DIET, BECOME EVEN BIGGER ROLE PLAYERS IN MY OVERALL TREATMENT. DR. COLBERT IS AMAZING AND HIS BOOK IS AMAZING. I AM PUTTING MUCH MORE THAN JUST A BOOK REVIEW OPINION AT STAKE HERE. FOR THESE REASONS, I CANNOT OVER EMPHASIZE THE ABSOLUTE NEED TO OWN, READ, AND USE THIS BOOK. WISH I COULD PROVIDE COPIES TO EVERYONE I KNOW. IT'S THAT GOOD.

Original Review:
I am pleased to provide a review of this publication by well-known Christian physician, Dr. Don Colbert. "Let Food Be Your Medicine" is not a new concept. Chinese have practiced this for thousands of years. Before such things as antibiotics, our pioneer forefathers used food as medicine.

This review would have been totally different if I had written it just 24 hours ago. At about 11:00 a.m. CST this morning (11/7/16) I received a diagnosis from my doctor of Stage 4 colon cancer. Consequently, I am about to put the book to the ultimate test. I'll decide if the book is valid or invalid by the results I experience using the ketogenic diet to create an unfriendly environment for cancer cells within my body.

Colbert covers the use of food to combat a range of diseases; including: heart disease, obesity, arthritis, ADHD, Type 2 diabetes, cancer, and more. From my own experience, I know that Colbert is spot on with regards to diabetes and heart disease. I've suffered from both, and have managed to not only survive, but thrive by using my own versions of his modified Mediterranean Diet.

I'm anxious to once again get a healthy eating program underway and to experience the results of cancer being stopped in its tracks.

So.... in 6 months, ask me how I feel about this book, the eating programs, and the other valuable information provided by this volume.

Colbert's style is down to earth and is written in English, rather than some "Medicinese" journal or text book. I've enjoyed a number of Dr. Colbert's books over the years. But for me, personally, the subject and timeliness could not be any better.

I highly recommend this good read and award a 5 Star Rating.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest and timely review. There are no other expectations or arrangements between the publisher, author, or myself. The timing of this review and my medical diagnosis is purely coincidental.

Happy reading!

"Let Food Be Your Medicine" explains how a Mediterranean diet modified to be further anti-inflammatory can prevent or help resolve many health issues. After telling his story, the author presented the basic Mediterranean diet and explained the modifications he made to remove inflammatory foods. This is the basic diet that he suggests for everyone. It's very similar to what I eat based on the nutritional advice I've heard lately for cancer and heart disease prevention.

He tackles more diseases than that, though: cardiovascular disease, arthritis and autoimmune disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer (both early and late stages), early stages of dementia & Alzheimer's, ADAH and autism, and mental illness. He further modified his diet for each disease as certain foods seem to aggravate certain conditions. He provided several suggestions for what a breakfast, lunch, and dinner might look like. He also suggested things like correcting lies with truth, getting enough exercise, and so on. He also told stories about people who were helped by his diet and suggestions.

His philosophy is that drugs can help treat symptoms, but the ideal is to change your lifestyle to a sustainable, healthier one so that you can be weaned off of or at least greatly reduce the drugs you need. He maintained an encouraging tone, and his advice was easy to understand and felt do-able. Overall, I think his advice is generally quite good and helpful.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

This book really caught my attention because, like so many of you, I know that the foods I eat have a profound affect on how I feel. Getting a book that will guide me to eating better and healthier was really exciting and this book has everything I wanted!

The author shares his own story of health issues that plagued him. He also saw so many of his patients coming in with health issues and knew there was something that could be done to make things better. He understands what it's like to deal with a health issue that makes your life difficult and, because he does understand, his book doesn't come off as preachy or holier-than-thou, that so many books like this do. Inflammation is the root cause of so many of our health issues and I know, from personal experience, how difficult this is. Dr. Colbert gives us the plans and the information we need to change how our bodies feel.

He recommends nutrients and certain foods to help us feel better and actually heal our bodies. He explains things in a way that is easily understood and I found reading this book very easy. You can find things you're specifically looking for quite easily, too. I also love the fact that he has a recommended meal plan laid out for us. It's not difficult and I have found it easy to follow.

I really like this book and am using it to help myself feel better. I am already feeling better and losing weight. I think this is an excellent book and love that the doctor also shares his belief in God without reservation. I highly recommend this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book! He has instructions and explanations for how to eat to cure many diseases, and many patients who have proven them to work! I am trying the one for arthritis and autoimmune diseases. All but cancer, (which of course recommends Ketonic diet) are based on an altered version of the Mediterranean diet. Plan to hang on to this book for reference.

Great information is presented in an easy to understand format. The information is quite repetitive, but I assume that is bc many people read sections instead of the entire book.

What if you could prevent, or even reverse, disease simply through diet? It sounds like a novel idea, but is it possible? There are certainly arguments for both sides of the equation on this front. On one hand, there is clear evidence that not all foods are equal - some helping prevent cancer and others providing beneficial nutrition to the body. Everyone can agree that an apple is infinitely healthier than a can of coke. On the other end of the argument, however, there is evidence as well that points to megavitamins causing cancer and homeopathic / alternative medicine stores making a killing on profits without regulation that verifies the contents and health claims of the so-called miracle drugs (read: snake oil). Regardless of one's position, both sides must agree that diet can impact health. For example, a high sugar diet will most definitely seal one's fate to diabetes, just as a high ice cream diet can lead to obese weights.

This book is one that argues specifically for dietary change. By letting food be your medicine, this book argues that one can help prevent disease and improve health simply by modifying their diet. On the surface, this is a reasonable hypothesis to present. The book looks at losing weight, for sure, but it's main focus is by using specific diets to combat cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, type 2 diabetes, cancer, dementia, alzheimer's, ADHD, autism, and mental illness. It looks at menus with rotations, pesticides and their impacts, mercury in fish, alcat testing, supplements, and gluten.

I have a personal connection to the topic of this book. Being one with multiple autoimmune diseases, I wanted to see what this book said. Perhaps it would hold a key to resolution for me, or perhaps not. I stand by science reasoned with a healthy dose of Jewish faith. That said, I see the science of genetically modified foods and that the jury is still out. Thus, if someone automatically condemns it, I can't agree without the evidence. Just the facts, ma'am. At the same time, I recognize that autoimmune diseases require a modification of diet to balance the body for recovery and healing. After all, I am gluten free, soy free where possible, egg free, sugar cane free, dairy free...the list goes on, and to top it off, as a practicing Jew, I keep kosher.

So what does the chapter on autoimmune diseases hold for me? Avoid x, y, and z, and blame GMOs for everything. For the miniscule portion of the book on this topic, I struggle with this simplistic view and feel it isn't worth the read. The section on Alzheimers discredits the Mayo clinic and highlights fringe studies that suggest one can cure the disease with diet alone. While there are foods that can help and foods that can hinder, the argument that it can be cured simply through the mouth is one that has no weight in the scientific community or stance with biblical authority (BTW - this book is published for a faith-based organization. One that I love to work with and typically produces amazing books, with this one an exception).

As usual, there are helps to create a menu, the list of the "dirty dozen" and "clean fifteen," an argument against mercury using skewed statistics, a self-promotion to gain $$ using a specialized test, a link to order loads of supplements (read: dangerous waters) and give the author $$$, and an essay on gluten itself.

I believe in eating healthy. This book, however, is not the way. If you're looking to give your hard-earned money to a doctor who seems more invested in profit than actual treatment (my assumption on this is by this book alone), then buy the book. However, if you have half a brain, realize that this book has nothing new. Full of features including scare tactics and old information freely available from legitimate scientific websites (such as Mayo Clinic) online, one can craft their own plan by finding a reasonable doctor that has experience treating the relevant disease and perhaps even look to a nutritionist or coach to help with diet.

I typically am very generous with my reviews, but when a book makes grievous errors that can lead one overboard, I draw the line. If you look at my review history, I hand out between three to five stars fairly regularly. In this case, however, I have to resign myself to giving a single star. This is not the book you are looking for. Move along, move along...

Is it possible that the very foods we eat are not only contributing to the many diseases and illnesses that are taking our lives before their time, but the foods we crave are what is feeling things like cancer, dementia, heart disease and diabetes? Not only is it the types of foods but also when we eat them, in what amounts and that the very "good" foods we grew up on have been so genetically modified, our government and FDA no longer have to provide disclaimers for the products we find our own shelves. It is no wonder that obesity and disease are running so high here in America while other countries are refusing to offer these types of products or even incorporate them into their diets at all. What if there was a way to drastically change your medical prognosis simply by giving up the food that is killing you? Would you be willing to do it?

Sadly most are not willing to give up certain foods like wheat, dairy, cheeses, salts, sugars and other foods for the sake of not only possibly eliminating things like diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, cancer, ADHD, mental illnesses, along with getting healthier, losing weight and living longer. In Let Food Be Your Medicine by Don Colbert, MD, offers some advice in this book on how simple dietary changes have been proved to prevent or reverse diseases like the ones mentioned above and provides some great tips along the way such as which fruits should diabetics avoid and which ones they should eat. This is exactly what this book is all about, living a healthy lifestyle that both treats and prevents disease. And that is living life to the fullest and I am so excited to begin my own journey.

We all know that anytime you make an appointment to see a doctor, most of the time, all you walk home with is a prescription to treat the symptoms of what you went in to see them for. "Most of what doctors learn after graduation is taught to them by pharmaceutical reps, so it is really hard to fault the doctors completely for this. They are bogged down, and don't have the time, money or resources to do what I did. I don't fault the doctors but I do fault the system. Doctors are so busy treating patients, doing paperwork, and figuring out how to bill for services, much less be paid, that we have come to rely on training from the pharmaceutical world. Doctors need to take continuing education classes every two years to stay licensed. Imagine if all medical doctors took just two classes on preventive health. That would transform things." (pg 21-22).

After my own husband suffered a massive heart attack, in meeting with his cardiologist, we learned some surprising and chilling facts, that most men and women who are having cardiovascular issues are doing so much younger and younger than ever before, and he firmly believes that diet is the root cause. There are some incredible tips and food plans inside this easy to read book and Dr. Don Colbert used his own medical issues to come up with the ideal prescription that all of us need if we want to rule out these illnesses, diseases and live much longer. Learn what foods relieve ADHD and Autism and which ones contribute to it, learn how inflammation plays a key role in causing so many of the life threatening diseases and illness today and how some simple diet changes can improve your life and thus eliminating all those prescription costs. If it is so simple, then why aren't people willing to give it a try?

I received Let Food Be Your Medicine by Don Colbert MD, compliments of Worthy Publishing for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. What a great way to begin 2016, with a healthy lifestyle, living longer, having more energy and eliminating such things like diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity while doing so! I highly recommend this book and can't wait to learn more from Dr. Colbert who specializes in anti-aging through the things we do, eat and how we manage our life. For me, this one easily garners a 5 out of 5 stars. It is simple to read and keeps you engaged that you can read it in one sitting.

`Let Food Be Your Medicine` written by author Don Colbert, MD uses a modified Mediterranean Diet to help the reader make healthy choices to prevent or reverse several diseases. I chose this book to review because I have several health problems I am hoping to decrease. I also like the bright color scheme of the cover, so inviting!

There are two sections to this book. Section one the reader begins searching for answers to their health problems. The second section is where the reader learns to apply the modified diet. The layout of section two is to focus on one disease per chapter. While focusing on a particular disease the reader is given suggestions of what, and what not, to eat. Also, how to prepare healthier meals.

In the appendix, there is a 21-day meal plan which includes 3 small snacks per day. The meals include most food Westerners will eat. The meals are well organized and easy to read. Also of interest to the reader may be the lists of `The Dirty Dozen` (fruits/veggies higher in amounts of pesticides) and `The Clean Fifteen` (fruits/veggies lower in pesticides).

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to change their eating habits.

Don Colbert in his new book, "Let Food Be Your Medicine" published by Worthy Publishing gives us Dietary Changes Proven to Prevent or Reverse Disease.

From the back cover: Choosing A Better Life

One Meal At A Time
In Let Food Be Your Medicine, Dr. Don Colbert takes a look at the most common health issues and offers simple dietary changes using a specially modified Mediterranean Diet. With a better understanding of what to eat and what not to eat, readers will know how their nutritional choices affect: -
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE - WEIGHT LOSS - ARTHRITIS - ADHD - TYPE 2 DIABETES - CANCER - AND MORE.
Let Food Be Your Medicine includes meal plans, delicious recipes, tips on supplements, and other information to help you find an approach to food that will change your life. You can beat genetics. You can overcome. You can start today.

Most of us think God is not concerned with what we eat, but the Bible actually offers great insight and instruction about the effects of food on our bodies. Dr. Colbert introduces a revolutionary sugar detox method, combined with an anti-inflammatory form of the modified Mediterranean diet that resolves a broad spectrum of diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, dementia, cancer, and osteoarthritis. Just imagine – understanding how food alone can produce mental clarity, balanced weight, and longevity. Includes meal plans and recipes.

Dr. Colbert has a brilliant idea. Since the food we ate is the cause of our current health issue then the food we will eat should be the cause of our returning to health. Did you know that, “...every single degenerative disease has inflammation as the foundation. Every single one of them!” That's why an anti-inflammatory diet is essential. Dr. Colbert explains how a Mediterranean diet modified to be further anti-inflammatory can prevent or help resolve many health issues. He deals with the situation in two parts: Part One is titled "Searching For Answers". In Part Two we are "Applying For Answers". I think it is incredible some food got us into the situation we are in right now, some other food can get us out of the situation and the need for medication can be eliminated. If you have or if you know someone who has a degenerative disease then this is the book to read and use to reclaim health.

This book was released less than a month ago. I was able to get an early release of it for review and have enjoyed reading and learning these past couple of weeks. If you don't have much knowledge about "clean" or healthy eating, this book and lifestyle suggested may be hard to grasp or overwhelming. I know a couple of years ago, I probably wouldn't have considered it. But over the years I have read a lot of heath books and have seen first hand with my own health and family; how important it is to stay away from certain foods and food chemicals.

This is my first book that I've read by this author who also happens to be a medical doctor. I was surprised how many health issue he has had as a doctor. I guess I just assumed he would be naturally healthy. Dr. Colbert spent many years and a lot of money doing his own personal research and testing his theories about eating certain foods and how our body responds to food positive or negative. I thought this would be a book that I would want to skim, but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading every page about his personal journey, his findings and his suggestions.

Dr. Colbert suggests applying the Mediterranean diet and includes some modifications based on food allergies or what specific symptom or disease you ware wanting to treat. He has chapters on how to beat Cardiovascular diseases, arthritis and autoimmune, type 2 diabetes, fighting cancer, dementia and Alzheimer's, ADHD and Autism, mental illness.

He also includes a 21 day meal plan, shopping lists, supplement list and pesticide list while shopping for fresh veggies and fruits. I will be looking over the 21 day plan again with my husband and we will be trying the recipes and suggestions. I personally can not have dairy or gluten so I'm looking forward to trying the Mediterranean diet like he suggests. I hesitate to use the term "diet" because I feel like this kind of eating should be a lifestyle change if you're going to commit to eating like that.

As I was reading the book about foods and inflammation and some of his suggestions (like not eating the same foods every single day), I had a lot of "ah ha" moments and it made a lot of sense. I can't wait to try his meal plan and recipes. He uses a lot of normal meats, veggies and fruits-nothing too weird.

If you're ready to be healthy and want to learn about food chemicals and inflammation, then I think you will really enjoy this book!

I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.

Basically a sales pitch for the ability of the Mediterranean Diet to cure all diseases. However, with that said it was very helpful to understand the impact food has not only to harm your health, but to improve it as well. Most of the diseases one developes stem from inflammation caused by the food we eat. While we "catch" the common cold haphazardly, we "develop" diabetes, cancer, dementia, and other diseases overtime to the degree we consume high inflammatory foods. He admits genetics do play a role in diseases (loading the gun) but that our diet, stress, environment tend to pull the trigger.

I've started to implement factions of the Mediterranean Diet (more wild salmon, beans, veggies, rice, non-GMO foods, and nuts; less red meat, sugar, dairy), as we attempt to increase our overall health.

The disease specific diets got old after awhile, but in some ways it was helpful to see the main parts over again as it helped to reinforce the plan.

Overall an good read that has netted the most consistency for a healthier diet for us.

I am very impressed with this book. I have read several of Colbert's books and I think this is his best one by far.

Colbert convinced me we can make good food choices that prevent, control, cure, or manage diseases like heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, dementia, hypertension, and most cancers. He is not opposed to medication but it should not be our default choice. We need to consider the foods we eat and the core issue of inflammation.

He shares his own experience of acute kidney failure while in medical school. His leg muscles were necrosed and he was told he'd never walk again. He managed to beat that but then developed a raging case of psoriasis. That began his study of diet, inflammation, food sensitivity, and food allergy.

Colbert gives us the essential elements of an anti-inflammatory diet, a modified Mediterranean Diet. He includes suggestions for specific diseases, such as arthritis and type 2 diabetes. He gives some convincing examples of how this eating plan has helped his patients.

I learned much from this book. I did not know that, “...every single degenerative disease has inflammation as the foundation. Every single one of them!” (57) That's why an anti-inflammatory diet is essential. I found out about the foods that feed cancer, like sugar. I learned about process foods and why it is important to avoid them. The same goes for GMO. I was reminded of the importance of exercise, like walking 30 minutes a day. I found out how hormones affect the appetite and how to find out if I am sensitive to a particular food.

I really like this book. While Colbert advocates a Mediterranean Diet eating plan, he provides particular modifications for dealing with many diseases, like ADD, dementia, and for loosing weight. Unlike other books I've read that try to sell you their own supplements, this book has everything you need to get your diet on track. I highly recommend it for those who are looking for a long-term healthy lifestyle diet.

Food for thought: “Nothing you eat is worth dying for.” (145)

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

It's the new year - we are all making better lifestyle choices, new diets and adding exercise to our routines. I thought it would be the perfect time to take a look at options other than the fad diets I see plastered all over the billboards, television, internet, etc. Dr. Colbert walks readers through this book about lifestyle change and not just an instant diet. He provides the information needed to help get us on track with our health and fitness. Add a little exercise to your life, and this book could very well save your life!

God provided us with this earth filled with plenty of fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans to provide us- his children - with the necessary food to keep us healthy. Dr. Colbert tells us how this food will heal you and that it is obvious that God knew what he was doing. Dr. Colbert provides readers with a 21-day meal plan that is easy to follow in Let Food be Your Medicine.

For anyone looking for answers to a particular health issue, whether it's weight loss, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, fibromyalgia or other debilitating illness, Let Food Be Your Medicine is a book you should read. Opening your eyes to what you eat and changing your eating habits might mean the difference between simply existing in this world rather than enjoying the abundant, vibrant lifestyle God meant for you to live.

I just knew when I read the cover, and the description, that I had to have this book. Many of the diseases mentioned in this book run in my family. And to be able to change my diet to prevent or even reverse disease is so encouraging to me! The diet discusses is a modified Mediterranean diet. Dr. Don Colbert gives some wonderful insight to the foods that cause inflammation and how to substitute and cut them from our diet! I have learned that inflammation is the root of most of the diseases, and have been encouraged to make changes to better my health, and hopefully live longer. The diseases discussed in this book are: cardiovascular, arthritis and autoimmune disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, dementia and Alzheimer's, ADHD and Autism, and mental illness. The author has done research and studies and has included a 21-day meal plan, along with a shopping list, for our reference.

I strongly recommend this book to those who have any of the listed diseases, or loved ones living with disease. I rate this book a 4/5 stars.

This book seems healthy & hopeful. My question: does it work long term. It proposes a modified Mediterranean diet minus wheat with other moderations for cardiovascular disease, immune related diseases, diabetes, cancer, dementia, and mental health issues including ADHD, depression, anxiety, & others. Colbert also encourages good emotional health as a key to body health for all of these. He offers an example of a patient who improved for each type of condition. My only concern is when some conditions such as cancer he describes as being able to be managed as chronic vs terminal; I wouldn't want a patient to not get treated, but he does not suggest that. If you are interested in this type of approach to health, give Colbert's book a read. If nothing else, you'll be motivated to eat healthier... For a little while. :)

Don Colbert, who has written many excellent books on diet and health, has a new book called "Let Food Be Your Medicine". The title is taken from a quote by Hippocrates, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food". Section one lays out the premise of the book while section two is divided into different diets for various health conditions. The health conditions that are addressed are heart diseases, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, alzheimers and dementia, ADHD and autism and mental illness. There are several appendixes in the back which include meal plans you can rotate for 4 days. With the medical profession relying so much on drugs, this is a much needed book. Following the advise in this book will put you on the road to healing and better health.

A book that basically tells you that the Modified Mediterranean Diet is the lifesaver for many health conditions, some of them chronic, we suffer from today.

When I picked up this book, I didn't know the author was very much a Christian faith-based practitioner, and that a lot of his 'teachings' stem from the Bible and such. There weren't that many aspects of faith-based teachings in this, but the few sometimes grated.

Still, it's got good advice, but this might apply to just the people who already eat the Mediterranean Diet way - good luck getting an Indian or a Chinese person to swap their diets around completely this way (not even sure that would be good and/or compatible with them either, to be honest).

I actually read this for my mom. She wanted my opinion about the program compared to the one I made her do, which is called The Fast Metabolism Diet.
Good book- I like that it gives info for different diseases or problems and encourages the "patient" about succeeding. Some of the info went over my head and that's why I rated it a 3, but I do believe that this book is a good read for a lot of people.
For me, I prefer The Fast Metabolism Diet and have seen great success with it; I like to stick with what I know works.

This book is worth reading if you have the disease or problem that he is discussing.
