To find the answers she has to go on an Underworld journey.
She doesn’t want to. Because it means she has to enter a reality where nothing is as it seems. Where searching for answers and uncovering truths may cost her her life. She knows they play dirty. Rayne Dowel knows she is different. She begins her life as a loner, moving through life seemingly as an observer, rather than a participant. She is a highly sensitive person, reactive to all around her. She dulls her sensitivity to life by smoking pot daily, but ultimately learns to use yoga to master the assault on her senses. She operates on different levels of consciousness, communicating with higher beings that advise and steer her in the right direction. This book is a journey about self-awareness and about her struggle to work with the hand she'd been dealt. Rayne must learn to trust herself, use the light and the messages to find a place for her to live with serenity. This was an interesting book, about a person's individual journey to find the right path and make the most of their time in this lifetime. The book reveals Rayne's growing awareness and how she learns to live with it. A fascinating glimpse into a world usually hidden, for fear of being judged or not believed.
Rayne Dowell starts her autobiography by telling us how she drowned when she was four years old and was brought back to life. She devotes her life to understanding The LIght, which is not about religion but more about how all life is connected. She has vivid dreams that she remembers and her accounts of them are poetic. She struggles to understand the meanings of the dreams and the signs that are being given to her. Sometimes people whom she doesn’t know are in the dreams and then appear in her life in some way. She experiences what she calls mind-to-mind communication with others. I can’t even begin to imagine how baffling and scary it must have been to come to terms with her experiences. She now understands her gift and is focused on using it to help others. For those of who wonder about life and the spiritual world, Rayne gives us many intriguing thoughts and insights.
Rayne Dowell takes us in an intriguing and revealing spiritual journey, this book really makes you sit up and take notice. We all, at sometimes wonder about our connection with the spiritual world, and this book, presents Rayne’s experiences with an extreme honesty which is quite heartening.
I really clicked with some of the experiences of Rayne Dowell, occasionally throughout our lives we do experience the extraordinary and wonder to ourselves where that actually came from. Often we are too busy, too insular and these precious moments pass us by unheeded, there is a definite message here to take care not to ignore them, for indeed these spiritual experiences the very core too our existence.
The book is excellently presented and a joy to read on Kindle. I loved the poppies, it’s not often you get a splash of colour in a kindle book, and it is a nice touch.
Unmasking started off very intriguing, which drew me in. But then the narrative switched to focus heavily on Leslie (and mysterious events surrounding him), though the author didn’t provide any answers as to who this Leslie person/being/thought/idea might be. (Originally, he was one of the men she dated, but after they broke up, the “Leslie” character “morphed” and became confusing—is he now some sort of “entity” and not an actual real person?!) I’ve gotta be honest: it was frustrating! But I kept going because I wanted answers to that mystery. Unfortunately, you won’t get that.
While I admit to not reading the popular book “The Secret,” I will guess that “The Secret” and “Unmasking” share a similar theme and narrative. I have a friend with schizophrenia, and “Unmasking” reads as if… well, there’s hearing voices, imagining scenarios, etc.. I do commend the author’s truths and seemingly sincere effort to reach out and touch others, though; maybe her journey might help elucidate some curious things about life. I gather that she’s a brave, resourceful, and curious woman. Although, I was very disappointed that, in some events where she believed people & babies were being tortured & killed all around her, she seemed to simply shrug it off and move on, as if, well, “life is life, to each their own, who am I to judge or step in?” Aaargh! Yes, I was horrified at this seeming indifference and lack of helpful action, but then again, I wasn’t there, I didn’t experience it, and so, who am I to judge? Or, did she simply imagine all these horrific events? Hard to tell sometimes.
There are pockets of really great writing, though inconsistent. The Alaska bit was great. At the 70% or so mark, she really starts to shine with insightful observation about people and life, sharing heartfelt truths and wisdom. I am always excited when I get to this stage in a book—it’s what makes a book so satisfying to read. So, I’ll dismiss my critical feedback to focus on the content of the last few chapters, where I’m placing the bulk of my rating.
I'll start this review by saying I've never been completely sure how "spiritual" I consider myself, and you need to have an open mind for this book. That being said, I did find myself opening up to new possibilities while reading. The groundwork for some suspense is laid early on in the biography with a creepy ex boyfriend and it proceeds to be a roller coaster of emotions from there on in with him lurking in the shadows and other mysterious, larger forces at work. I enjoy how she incorporates her dreams into the story, allowing the reader to interpret them along with her. Rayne has definitely had an interesting life that was captivating to read about.
"The unexplainable. How does it work? What effect or impact does the unseen have on the physical realm?"
A catalyst for any deep thinker, Rayne Dowell's Unmasking is an autobiographical tale of self-discovery and spiritual awakening. I found the writing clear, the message moving, and the story suspenseful. In a world where most of our time is consumed with the definite, the obligatory, this explores the less thought about reality of our existence, the subtle yet often vital truths of the unseen world.
Unmasking is all about the wonderful journey of growing and knowing oneself. In this journey, Rayne struggles at first to understand what her vivid dreams are telling her, but learns to trust herself and discovers her true gifts. She writes with honesty, compassion and respect for herself and others around her and shows that you must sometimes go into your own wilderness to truly discover yourself.
