Pepper Jones #7

Chasing Indigo

Rate this book
Ryan Harding. He’s running royalty. The guy I’ve been following online since I started this sport. Sure, I’ve got a crush on him, but so does nearly every other runner in the country. I’m an unknown in this world, it’s not like the prince of distance running is ever going to notice me, which is for the best. I’ve been down this road once before with the Mr. Perfect type, and I’m not doing it again.

Indigo Adams stood out the moment I saw her cross the finish line. She’s not only got a gorgeous stride and stellar kick, but possesses the tenacity and drive required to reach the top. She’s the perfect fit for our newly-formed team in Colorado, though her running potential isn’t the only thing that’s captured my attention. Indigo seems skeptical of our selection of her and even more skeptical of me and my intentions. What will it take for her to see she belongs here in Brockton, on this team… and with me?

(This is a spinoff from the Pepper Jones series but can be read as a standalone.)

I read half of the Pepper Winters series by Ali Dean a few years ago and enjoyed it, so when I saw she came out with a new book, Chasing Indigo, I figured I would give it a shot. I was surprised to learn that it's a standalone spinoff of that series, and the hero of the book is one of the secondary characters from it. Not only that, but the hero and heroine of that series, Pepper and Jace, also make appearances throughout the story. Catching up with them was great, and it made me move the rest of Pepper's series further up my tbr.  That being said, you don't have to have read the previous books to enjoy this one.

Indigo Adams began her running career in college instead of high school like most of her competition. Having a late start bothers Indy, but it doesn't stop her from winning when she competes in a marathon hours away from her hometown. Her amazing performance draws lots of attention, and that's just what she needs. Indy works seven days a week, and even then, she doesn't make the amount she needs to help fund her career. A sponsorship would be the answer to her prayers, and she's hoping her win helps to make that a reality.

Ryan Harding, a superstar in the running world, takes notice of Indy's performance immediately, but it's not just her running he admires. He decides to make his professional interest known, and when she politely brushes him off, he gives her his card in hopes that she'll choose to contact him one day soon. When that day never comes, he takes matters into his own hands and makes her an offer she can't refuse.

Chasing Indigo is a sweet, new adult sports romance with realistic characters and an entertaining storyline. It's well written, and you can tell the author knows what she's talking about when it comes to running. I feel like I've learned a thing or two just from reading her books.

Overall, I enjoyed the book from start to finish. Aside from the romance, there's a dash of drama and suspense thrown in that gave the ending some added excitement and made it feel even more satisfying, and the epilogue made me wish for a second generation series. I'm not sure if there are any plans for one, but I can always dream.

If you're a fan of the author's work or sports romance, this one's for you!

Ever since I read this author’s Pepper Jones series, I fell in love with all the characters. And, of course, Ryan too, because he is everyone’s sweetheart. He’s that sweet guy that even though you dated, will always be a close friend.
For those who read the Pepper Jones series know that Ryan and Pepper dated for a while before Jace opened his eyes and saw what was right in front of him. That time they were together, I just fell in love with Ryan. Even tough I was #TeamJace, I was rooting for a happy ending for Ryan and in this book, we finally get that.
Indigo Adams is no one. She began racing later than usual and is only now seeking a profession spot in that world. She gets her chance when she makes a show out of one race. She rocked it and Ryan Harding saw that she was special, and not all that spark was because of the way she raced. Indigo was the thing that Ryan was always looking for, that something more, that connection that he didn’t have with anyone.

I consider Ali Dean one of my favorite authors and I’m always thrilled to read her books so when I saw a book about Ryan, I almost lost my mind from excitement! I couldn’t wait to be back into the racing world and to see that crew all together again was awesome!
So, this story is filled with excitement, a bit of suspense, a lot of adrenaline and laughs.
I loved every second of it and even though I couldn’t put it down, I kept reading less so I would finish it so soon because it was so good being back with them. I loved it. 5 stars all the way.

One of my all-time favorite sports romances

Indigo (Indy) is 23 years old and lives Pittsburgh. Ryan is 25 years old and lives near Boulder, Colorado. He is a famous, elite, distance runner, whom Indy has admired from afar for years.

Indy did not begin officially running until her sophomore year in college. She got into it because of her first boyfriend, Liam, who was a runner on the men's track team at her college. She herself soon qualified for the women's team. Unfortunately, Liam turned into a controlling, gaslighting boyfriend. Because he did not show his destructive side to anyone but her, and he was quite popular with all the other college runners, it took her three years to grow into the maturity and confidence to break away from him. At the start of this story, Indy has been unconnected to Liam for two years, but he is still harassing her.

Ryan first encounters Indy at a half marathon, and is utterly impressed when she wins the race against world-caliber female athletes. He gives her his card and tells her he is very interested in coaching her. Their opportunity to truly get to know each other and become close begins when she takes him up on his offer.

There are so many things I greatly enjoyed about this novel:

1. I like Ryan and Indy, individually and as a couple. They are each honorable, compassionate, and highly motivated. They are almost equally talented as Olympic-caliber, elite runners.

2. I particularly appreciate the fact that Ryan and Indy are on stage together the vast majority of the novel, with the added bonus that they have their first meet within a few pages of the start of the book.

3. There is a judicious mix of two types of romantic conflict: Indy's internal conflict of difficulty trusting any man, because of her horrible first boyfriend, and the external conflict of two different villains intent on sabotaging Indy's running career.

4. There is just enough description of Indy's elite-runner training to be fascinating without becoming overwhelming and/or boring for someone who is not an elite runner themself.

5. The setting in Colorado is vividly drawn and adds a great deal to the story.

This is a second read of this novel for me. It was 5 stars the first time around, and it remains 5 stars for me. I am sure I will reread it multiple times in the future. My one wish is that it could eventually be released in audiobook format so I could purchase that as well.

3.5 stars.

Plot- Enjoyable plot.
I loved how Indy and Pepper sacrificed their own race to help Sienna and Lexie make the cutoff. That example of team loyalty was so heart warming!
I was hoping for something more dramatic from the stalker boyfriend, but it was still good.

Writing - Great. I enjoyed the occasional chapter written from the MMC’s POV.
I loved learning more about professional long distance running. The author did an excellent job of giving those details without bogging down the story. Very well done.
I loved how the FMC was very self aware. I appreciated the author’s wisdom in the writing:

As tempting as it is to use Livy as a tool to bring us closer, I’m glad when the topic changes to food.

When you open up on the kind of level I’ve started to with my new teammates, you open yourself up to judgment, rejection, or worse, them using it against you somehow.

Characters- I liked the FMC, even tho I hated when she had her bratty moments. At least she was self aware enough to know she was being a brat, and she did have a somewhat reasonable excuse due to her ex-boyfriend issues.
The MCC was also likable and was thankfully very patient and forgiving.
As for side characters, I loved their teammates! Loved the healthy friendships between the girls!

Romance- Good chemistry. I liked that it wasn’t insta-lust and he moved slowly with developing their relationship before it went physical. (It did bug me, tho, that he had an attitude of friends-with-benefits in his past relationships.)

Content-

Language- some swearing. Some f-words, some b-words, etc. Thankfully the language wasn’t overused to the point that it took away from the reading experience.

Spice- three very explicit sex scenes. (The third and last scene is very short.)
Two side characters made flippant remarks about going to a strip club. NOT COOL. Their remarks normalize men patronizing strip clubs. Strip clubs are the definition of male entitlement to female bodies. Strip clubs are a common entry-point for vulnerable women to get sucked into the sex trade, and survivors of human trafficking repeatedly say how the promise of female sexual empowerment at a strip club is actually a rotten lie. They experience exploitation and abuse in strip clubs. Men who go to those establishments and who think purchasing women’s bodies is okay are creating the demand for the sex trade. Again, NOT COOL.
Author, please don’t normalize toxic masculinity.
If you want a character to say something like that, then you need the other character to call them out on it, not ask to join them next time. *smh*
Okay, rant over.

Substance abuse- none
Violence- light.
Cover- meh
POV- dual POV
Cliffhanger- no.
Format- KU

What I love most about Ali is the reality of her stories! Each book is full of characters you can’t help but relate to and love! From their personalities to their life situations you can’t help but feel their bond and friendships! Time and time again I find myself getting sucked in and with each book I feel like I’m catching up with old friends! This amazing group of characters is amazing and I love that we are seeing more of them and getting their stories!

From the first Pepper Jones novel I instantly fell for Ryan Harding and I wanted him to have his HEA so badly! I am so happy that Indigo was the one for him because I couldn’t picture anyone better! They challenge one another and also support each other on their goals!

Indigo had a rough go at life but still pushed through and it was that tenacity that helped her achieve greatness in running! It was also that strength that attracted Ryan to her knowing that there was more that meets the eye and he wanted to uncover it all!

I absolutely loved this book. It stole my Sunday afternoon but it was well worth it. It was great seeing Ryan find his girl. Indy was another great female lead character. It was great to see her confidence growing throughout this book. Glad I never had an Olivia on any team of mine. I am always looking forward to Ali’s next book.

As soon as I read the blurb, I knew I had to read this book. Then it sucked me in with the first chapter. I loved how Indie was humble and Ryan was a sweetheart. There was a ton of tension in this book between their relationship, an ex, and her teammates. I didn't want it to end. I hope this is the beginning of a series, because I loved reading about these characters.

Ali Dean does it again. Bringing us into Ryan's world and showing us more of what we loved about him from Pepper's books. She introduced us to Indigo Adams, who is new to the running world. The connection the two main characters share is instantaneous. They make you fall into the running world and you just want to be apart of it. Ryan and Indigo both grow in this book and the ending is perfect.

Okay, so, I always liked Ryan Harding more than Jace. 🙈 Don’t hate me. Ryan goes after what he wants. And he wants Indigo! I was always a bit salty because I wanted Pepper with Ryan, but now I’m happy that Ali Dean knows her characters better than I do. Because Indigo is much better for him.

He was swoony, possessive, sexy, athletic, and I just kept visualizing him in athletic shorts. I die. Also, in grey sweat pants. What is it about grey sweats? Phew! It’s hot over here!

Indigo is new to us, we only got a glimpse of her in the last Pepper book. But I liked her better than Pepper too. She’s real. She has problems like the rest of us, which is why I never related much to Pepper. Indigo learns quickly from mistakes and doesn’t keep doing the same stupid shit over and over. That’s what I LOVE in a heroine. You can have doubts once, but after you’ve been shown who to trust, you don’t get to have any more doubts.

There was a super epilogue for all fans in this universe. Pepper and Jase, Kendra...

Ali Dean's "Chasing Indigo" is a spin-off of the Pepper Jones series. Of the characters in Pepper Jones, Ryan Harding has always been a darling to me and following his life in "Chasing Indigo" is the food my soul needed!

Ryan is out of college and is beginning to demonstrate his coaching abilities at the beginning of the novel. While at a race, the reader is immediately informed that Ryan still keeps in touch with Pepper and Jace Wilder; but it is a newcomer who catches his attention - Indigo Adams. As the story begins to follow Indigo Adams, the reader discovers the hardships Indigo is faced with such as economic hardships as well as an emotionally abuse relationship she is struggling to keep out of her life. As Ryan builds an elite running team, he manages to convince Indigo to join. For her part, Indigo must deal with leaving her hometown and family. Above all, however, Indigo must face a world beyond her own by trusting strangers with her career and well-being.

More than anything, it felt like "Chasing Indigo" was a reminder that we must learn to trust our own instincts as well as accepting communal support to be successful. Indigo, having dealt with emotional abuse for many years by a selfish partner, must struggle to open up to others so that she can continue to develop as a runner. **Spoilers** Following the reading of "Chasing Indigo," the reader is left with an immense amount of hope. Hope that humans are all connected and generally have good intentions; hope that we can come together and support our peers/friends when necessary. Despite the violence that occurs in the novel, this book left me with all of the positive feels that made me want to embrace the world once again!

*Mature Content Warning: As the characters have gotten older, so has the content of their relationships (physical and emotional).

I think this book deserves two reviews, for newcomers and established fans.

First, for newcomers, this is a wonderful read which totally stands alone, has wonderful characters, great writing and a wonderful plot with a thoroughly satisfying HEA. Really, the only downside is that you’ll want more (even though the tale is totally complete) as the book is simply too much fun. Don’t worry though as this book is actually a spin off of the author’s fantastic Pepper Jones series, the star of which is Pepper Jones (who by the time of Chasing Indigo is the married Pepper Wilder character who has a fairly minor supporting role). Frankly, you cannot go wrong with getting Chasing Indigo if you’re new to this author.

Now, for fellow fanatics. I too have adored Ali Dean’s Pepper Jones books from book 1 with its young naive if super athletic Pepper Jones to the last book with Pepper and Jace happily married. I don’t know about you, but I’ve always really like Ryan Harding and wanted him to get his own well-deserved HEA. Well, Chasing Indigo is as much his story as it’s the story of Indigo (Indy) Adams, a phenomenal character who is a bit like Pepper in her talent as a runner, but is very much a gal with her own very different story. That story is quite the doozy. If you enjoyed the Pepper Jones series I guarantee you’ll love this book just for Indy’s story - and then love it even more for finally giving Ryan the HEA he longed deserved.

But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

I was drawn into the world of running with this story. I am not a runner, nor am I a super sports fan. I knew nothing about the pro running or the competitiveness of it. None of that mattered. Ali Dean does an amazing job at drawing the reader into this world. You really do not need to know anything about it in order to read the story.

For Indy, being able to run, is her life. She's been burned badly by a past relationship and is distrustful of men around her. After winning a half marathon, she is invited to join a team. Enter Ryan Harding. Ryan is the golden boy of the running world. He is trying his hand at coaching and Indy is his first recruit. She feels lost, when she leaves home to live 1500 miles away, not knowing anyone. Taking a chance. She is passionate, and compassionate. She is a true leader, and slowly opens herself up to her team and to Ryan.

I fell in love with this story. It was the first one that I have read by Ali Dean, and it will not be the last. She did a phenomenal job in writing this story. It left me wanting to know more about all of the characters. To read more about this world. The characters face hardships and drama. There is some angst. But it is done so well that it doesn't feel out of place or that it was forced. These characters are so well developed, that I feel as if I could walk up to them on the street and have a conversation with them. They are more than believable. The adversities that they face are more than believable. This is a story that I will read time and time again.

Review is coming!I just read two back to back books with rock stars in them so it was time to read something different so it was time to jump into the world of runners. The only other books I have read with runners in it was the Pepper Jones series by this author. If you read that series then you have met Ryan already. If you haven't read don't worry about it because Chasing Indigo in a standalone read. When I first met Ryan in Pepped Up I so wanted him to be the one for Pepper but that didn't happen so I was excited to get his story because he deserves a happy ever after. Ryan is a sweet nice guy. He meets Indigo at a race. Indigo is a up and coming runner. She's great at running and kind of unknown until she wins a big race. At that race she catches Ryan's attention. Indigo is balancing running, working, and life things so she doesn't jump right away at the chance to train with Ryan and his team but eventually agrees to join his team. Ryan and Indigo are have a coach and runner relationship then a friendship relationship then more. Their relationship is kind of a slow burn. Indigo has a ex boyfriend that pops up in the beginning and as Ryan and Indigo's relationship grows I was waiting for the ex to pop back up then when he did I was surprised. This one was a really good read.

Love love love this book! I was completely addicted from the first page! You get a taste of romance, suspense, jealousy, and passion. Those are just a few to name, but much more goes on within this book.

Watching Indigo transform into the person she really wanted to be was incredible. She overcame the challenges that faced her and achieved the goals she made.

And of course we can’t forget about Ryan. He makes a point to not only help Indigo achieve her goals but he also finds himself in the process. Finding that he actually might be ready for the real deal with a girl, not just a 3-4 month fling. Not wanting to give too much info away without giving it away but this book is all sorts of steamy 😉

This book is a must read, especially if you’ve read the Pepper Jones series. She might make an appearance or two in this book! ❤️ Ali is my favorite go to author! I can’t wait for more! ❤️❤️

Advance reader copy received for review. All thoughts and views expressed are entirely my own.

I loved Ryan in the Pepper Jones books and was so thrilled he was getting his own book. However, as likable as Ryan and Indigo are, there wasn't much else that kept me glued to the book. It's an easy read, but it's not gripping. There's chemistry, but it's not electric. The story is interesting, but somewhat predictable. This is my eleventh Ali Dean book and her only book that I've had such a lukewarm reaction towards. I really wanted to like this book more, but it just wasn't in the same league as the other Ali Dean books I've read. It's not a bad book, but it's just not outstanding either.

A must-read for Pepper Jones series fans!

I absolutely loved this book! When I first found out about this spin-off to tell Ryan's POV, I was unsure of how it was going to go especially as Jace & Pepper truly are the cutest book couple. After I read the first chapter though, I became hooked on the plot line and slowly began to cheer on Ryan finding someone perfect for him. One thing I loved about the book was how the plot line follows a similar one as Pepped & Wilder, so the reader does get a chance to read what is happening other than from Jace & Pepper's POV. It is truly a stupendous read that not only focuses on love but also on the strength and motivation of an underdog and their will to go on. I would definitely recommend!

This book was absolutely wonderful! A perfect follow up to the Pepper Jones which was my favorite series read this year. We were left with the question, does Ryan get his own HEA. Well, Indy was perfect for him. I admit that I didn't love Indy from the start, mostly due to her skeptical attitude but she grew on me and I enjoyed her character development. I already knew Ryan so well from Pepper Jones and he was his amazing self in this book. I recommend reading Pepper Jones first even though its not absolutely necessary, I feel like it will add context. Overall, wonderful read and I am so happy to see Ryan finally get his own HEA.

Love love love! What a great read. Ali Dean did it again with Chasing Indigo! This is a spin off from the Pepper Jones series. You don’t have to read it before reading this book, but I highly recommend you do. Not for back story, just because it is AMAZING! Ryan Harding is running royalty and finds his perfect match while building his elite training team in Indigo Adams. The sparks fly off the page as their chemistry develops. The parallels drawn between elite training and relationships make this a great read for the athlete and non athlete alike. Indigo and Ryan will steal your heart as you dive into this read! 5 Stars!!!

I am very wary of spin-offs for series that I love. This one did not disappoint. The real star of this book is Indigo. I know it is a stand alone spin-off but I really enjoyed it and her. Some plot lines were reminiscent of the Pepper series, but overall, so good. I was definitely rooting for Indigo the whole book, and I really loved spending time with the Brockton Beasts (even if the name was a bit cringey).

I love a good sports romance, and Chasing Indigo was great! I had never read a running romance and I loved that It was the chosen sport. I felt like we got a real look into the world of training for long distance running.
I liked that the whole focus of the book wasn’t on Indigo & Ryan’s relationship. I thought we got to see Indigo’s progression of not believing in herself to her acceptance that she was actually an elite runner.
I also liked that there were a couple aspects of drama that moved the story along but didn’t make it angsty or drag the whole book down.

Ali Dean did it again! I absolutely LOVED the Pepper Jones series so I was so excited to see that Ryan was going to get his own book! The chemistry between Indigo and Ryan is perfect! Has just the right amount of drama and honestly is the “cherry on top” to a great world of characters! I love that the epilogue was years down the road so I had a visual of what life for the characters would be

I would definitely recommend this book, even if the person hasn’t read the Pepper Jones series.

Andddddd Ali Dean does it again! I'm not exaggerating when I say that I devoured this book in a matter of around 3 hours. I just couldn't put it down. If I could give this book a billion stars, it wouldn't be enough to describe how great this storyline and writing is. I loveee that we got to see a little bit more background on some of the other characters in the Pepper Jones series. I loved Indigo and Ryan and fell in love with another book couple all over again! Thank Ali for another awesome read!!

I have always loved Ryan Harding much like Indigo Adams. I am so glad that he got his own book. He was everything I want in a book boyfriend! Ali does a great job writing sports romance novels. The characters are truly athletes and the sport aspect is carried throughout the book. My only complaint is that the story ends too soon.

This was a fantastic ride. I love all of Ali´s books but since to this point I loved the Pepper series the most. I never thought that she could do it again. But she did it. She really surprised me with this one. It was that good! I honestly couldn't put it down and read it all at once! It has everything that you need in a book in that genre. Friendship, jealousy, love and a plot that will get you hooked. You're not going to regret if you buy this one!

Another fabulous Ali Dean story. Indigo was intriguing from the beginning and I quickly found myself rooting for her in all area of her life. I loved reading how Indy was able to strive through her rough background in a way that felt honest and real. Having the gang from Pepped Up is always a HUGE bonus! Although I was really excited to see if Ryan got his HEA, I’ve was even happier for Indigo.

I loved this book even more than the Pepper books. With Indigo’s past I’m really able to relate to her struggles with trust and self esteem, and flatout just believing in yourself when you’ve got people dragging you down. I love the chemistry and slow burn buildup of this book, it was just fantastic. I highly recommend!
