An agent for the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs? That’s the best job in the world. And it’s enough for Terry Brandt, who doesn’t need personal relationships complicating his life. His newest assignment puts him undercover, investigating a Hollywood agent who may have some evil tricks up his sleeve.

Edge is not the man he appears to be. Although he’s a member of the Hollywood agent’s security staff, his true situation is darker and deeper than that. Ordered to seduce the new prospect, Edge finds himself caught in conflicting loyalties.

Haunted by their pasts and tied up in secrets, neither Terry nor Edge can afford to allow passion to interfere with duty. And with danger dogging them, it’s impossible to envision a future together.

Kim Fielding lives in Oregon and travels as often as she can manage. A professor by day, at night she rushes into a phone booth to change into her author costume (which involves comfy clothes instead of Spandex and is, sadly, lacking a cape). Her superpowers include the ability to write nearly anywhere, often while simultaneously doling out assistance to her family. Her favorite word to describe herself is "eclectic" and she finally got that seventh tattoo.

There is no question, Kim is the top dog here. She draws you in with her powerful writing and holds you steadfast in this bewitching world. The couples continue to surprise me, and the emotions strike harder as each story unfolds. I’ve said it before but it bears repeating…these stories are captivating and consuming but hold greater power together. I love falling into a spinning vortex of an extraordinary paranormal world, and the Bureau has been an exhilarating freefall. I have a soft spot for shifters, and Edge nestled his way straight into my heart. I was delighted to meet Terry and couldn’t wait to discover how they were going to match up. Within a few pages, my jaw clenched and hackles rose. I was overcome with anger and sadness, but I knew I had to be patient and would be rewarded. Let me tell you, the final prize was worth it. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t a cakewalk, *whispers* but I’m not here for my sweet tooth.

The general theme so far has been good versus evil, with unexpected exceptions in between. Do you know the old Cherokee parable about the two wolves? “The one you feed is the one who lives.” But what happens when your will is taken? Which wolf wins when you aren’t in control? I was curious from the start and quickly identified who the monster was. Terry is good-natured with a warm heart and has a spring in his step. He’s happy and enjoys his career and basic apartment in California. LA’s gridlock doesn’t even damper his spirits. When his new assignment sends him to rub elbows with the rich and famous, he counts his lucky stars. He must charm the boss to earn his trust. It’s a simple plan; get in, get the evidence and get out. But Edge is a complication he didn’t see coming.

The mansion has everything he could ever want but nothing he truly desires. Or so he thinks. Whenever the boss appears, he’s accompanied by a trio of guard dogs. Well, most of the time. They are gorgeous creatures radiating danger with every breath. Terry is especially drawn to one of them and feels safe whenever he is near. Originally there were four dogs, brothers. I was crushed to learn what happened to Butch. Underneath Edge’s laser stare and tight lips lay a brittle innocence. Terry is insanely attracted to him and longs to slip past his defenses. It’s supposed to be all business but they can’t help adding some pleasure. A surge of emotions heightens the tension. We face secrets, pain, and loyalty. There is much to discover with this restrained shifter and I wish to spill it all…but I won’t. You’ll thank me later. Promise.

Beware of: Abuse, in all its horrific glory. Sacrifice, cuz freedom isn’t always free. And love truly is the greatest gift.

And pssst, did you see that cover?!?

This book is for:
Anyone willing to open their hearts and arms to any and all creatures, human and otherwise, I highly suggest you check out why The Bureau is so unique!

Also noteworthy…all of the proceeds from the sale of this book go to DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS!

Good plot, characters and writing, as always. I’m starting to sound like a broken record when I review a book in this series because, once again, I have to notice that stretching the story a little further and giving the characters more time to develop their relationship would have benefitted this book a lot. I liked both Terry and Edge as characters and they worked well as a couple, but they didn’t have enough time together to avoid the insta-love trap. Although my enjoyment of the story didn’t suffer much because of it, it’s still a pity, it would’ve taken only some small adjustments to improve that aspect.

AUDIOBOOK Jun 2021: YES! Joel Leslie delivers in this series! This bundle is sooooo worth it!

EBOOK Jul 2021:
Tensión!!! Yessssssss!!

I ADORE ❤️❤️ this series by the talented Kim Fielding!

This one takes place in 1989, Los Ángeles. Like all previous three stories, it slowly reveals the worldscape Fielding creates. No info-dump to hurry the mystery along!!

We have three unique beings who act as security for a successful talent agent the Bureau has under investigation. In comes Terry Brandt undercover to get dirt on the man. I won’t say more on this since it will spoil the plot! (But it’s one that’s ages old and not too difficult to guess).

What does put a spin on this plot is Edge, one of the beings assigned to watch Terry. I wanted to cuddle him! The tension between Edge and Terry drew me in and kept me in to the very end—these two go out fighting for their HEA!!! 🔥❤️

I can’t recommend this series highly enough! All can be read as standalones since they take place in different decades, but there is some constancy in the bureaucracy and some previous MCs do make small cameos from time to time.

RE-READ Oct 2020:

This is such a great series. It has abuse and crime and bad guys and monsters... But it also has some sweet, sweet creatures that steal my heart every time and some bad-ass agents (or former agents) who protect the weak and the abused and the ensalved...
Terry and Edge's story is no different. And I really understand the notion Kim Fielding is trying to convey (I think) that normal, ordinary humans are more cruel and more evil-minded that many a "monster" in this world...

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

5 sweetly Edge-y stars!!! :)

I simply loved those boys!

Although Charles Grimes and his Tenrael are still my fave couple of the series, Terry and Edge stole my heart, too...
It was a fairly simple story.

Terry's case was fairly simple too - pretend to be an actor wannabe and be ready to sell anything to a nasty "fame broker" to achieve it. And yet, Terry didn't count on meeting Edge - a beautiful, sad and sexy Edge - who made Terry feel and who almost blew the whole mission for Terry.

Highly recommended! :)

This is the 4th novella in the Bureau series, and the longest yet. You can read the stories in any order, or read any of them as standalone. If you've read the other books, you'll find a few familiar faces in this one.

This story takes place in Los Angeles in 1989. Terry Brandt loves his job with the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs, but his new assignment brings unexpected complications. The biggest of those complications is Edge, a member of Terry's target's security staff. Be ready for questions about loyalty and duty, as well as some of the usual issues about what constitutes a real monster. And if you like to listen to music while you read, I suggest a playlist with late 80's hits.

As with the rest of this series, all my royalties go to Doctors Without Borders.

I have to say that this author is not afraid showing the lowest parts of humanity. It's not like this type of thing wouldn't happen "in real life" since worse happens every day.
I do appreciate that she also shows that not everyone allows or turns a blind eye to abuse even if it is insidious.

The shifter part of the story was a different take than normal so that was refreshing and the trans-species agency's policies are fluid enough to allow for redemption.

As this series progressed, each story got more intense and angstier, and this was at times heart-breaking. Even though there were some things here that I would normally not want to read, the story sucked me in. It was emotional, suspenseful and had characters I rooted for so hard. I don't like spoilers, so I will say that the twist of the story was amazing. Ms Fielding managed to create someone who was loyal, fierce yet compassionate at the same time. I hurt so much for Edge. He felt deeply, obeyed silently but still kept those feelings that made him human compared to others.

Terry Brandt has this type of personality that makes people to open up to him. He never sits still, he is a doer, so working undercover suits him perfectly. But this time he encounters a man who shows him the side of life he didn't know existed - evil, malign and corrupted. I loved how Terry treated Edge, how he made him feel valued, like he mattered. I think Edge really needed to be treated with decency. The lengths Terry went to protect Edge were amazing which solidified their feelings even more.

In the end everything worked out for both of them. I sometimes wonder about Townsend, the chief, and who he might be exactly. When I almost hate him for his cavalier attitude, he just comes through for his men and gives them exactly what they need. Absolutely wonderful story of loyalty, liberation and love.

Another great addition to the amazing Bureau series! And such a lovely new couple. I still like Harry and John (Creature) the best, and I doubt anything will change that, but Edge and Terry are a close second! Their story was a bit more brutal than the rest as Edge's abuse continued throughout the book. His ‘boss’ was a real monster

Seriously, as much as I love these, I think what’s getting me through them is the promise of a HFN at the end of each book. 😅

Another great addition to this series. It blows my mind how much world building, plot and characterization the author can fit in a short amount of pages. This time the story deals with a shapeshifter, Edge, and a skeevy and unethical operation run by the creepy and despicable Whitaker, a Hollywood agent (aha!), that Terry is undercover to take down. Whitaker is a real piece of work, a monster to not just paranormal beings but young, naive humans trying to make it in the movie industry

This story is set in 1989, a little further in time than the previous stories, so Terry is more aware that things aren’t so black and white...rather than monster versus human, he sees that humans can be the monster and instead asks friend or foe? And Edge has all the potential of being a friend...or more. Deemed as “weak” because he’s not fully adapted to his captivity, Edge’s loyalty to Whitaker, his owner, is tested when he builds a connection with Terry. And like in every single book in this series, that connection is where the magic is made. Where the hope begins. The nods to the time periods, in the form of music, the HIV pandemic, etc., were nice touches. The dialogue sounded a bit modern though.

As always, I love any mention of/cameo scenes from Tenrael and Charles from Book One ❤️

One of my favorites in the series so far, but the pervasiveness of abused MCs in this series is starting to feel both icky and boring. This one also didn't have any actual smut and I did find it weaker for it--not all books need it, but here it felt like a strange omission given we get one almost-sex scene that ends prematurely, and then nothing after that.

I love this series so much! As with the previous stories, Kim Fielding manages to pack a pretty powerful emotional punch wrapped in both pain and sweetness in a fairly short novella.

Terry Brandt is a young field agent with The Bureau, which investigates cases involving supernatural entities. He’s a pretty happy guy who loves his job and is just bopping along living his life, enjoying himself without too much care or worry....until he gets sent on a case where he meets Edge.

Edge is security for a rich Hollywood agent who’s shady, in a much worse way than average, bringing himself to Bureau attention. It’s Terry’s job to get proof of what’s going on, and Edge is assigned to be Terry’s shadow while he stays, “auditioning” for Whittaker, the agent.

Edge strikes Terry as a little awkward and not very forthcoming but Terry needs to figure out if Edge is a part of this or just hired muscle. After a couple of days in each other’s company, Terry discovers there’s more to the situation, and Edge, than he thought and suddenly he’s prepared to risk the case to help Edge out of a horrible existence.

I loved both Terry & Edge, and I loved that when things fell apart, Terry wasn’t the only one willing to risk everything. Also, as a side issue, Townsend, the Bureau’s head, is becoming more & more interesting. This was a great addition to the series and I can’t wait for the next!

Terry seemed to view him as a person rather than as a monster or an animal . That knowledge warmed his heart even as his flesh burned in agony .
Terry and Edge are another lovely couple that stole my heart . They were both interesting characters but I found myself routing for Edge most of the time. There were definitely some dubious and suspenseful plot twists going on in this book but Chained is not as dark as I wished , still it was a pleasure to read .
Although these novellas in the Bureau series are rather short , each one of them is very complete and impressive and I’m still enjoying them .

Edge is a mastiff shifter who gets abused and used by his master. But Edge never challenges his master, because Edge thinks he needs to be loyal (and Edge knows first hand, what happens to dog who stands up to his master). Until he meets Trent Brandt, who comes to Edge's master, wanting to be represented in the world of Hollywood stars. Edge doesn't know that Trent is an undercover agent of the Bureau though, but he feels like he wants to protect Trent.

I think this is the longest (?) novella of Kim Fielding's The Bureau universe. Because of that, there's enough built-up of the characters' background as well as the relationship process. It's more satisfying read for me, personally.

Also, I'm happy that there's another glimpse of the "original" couple, Charles Grimes and Tenrael :).

Pretty entertaining. Not one of my favorites in this series though.

I'm tiring of the paranormal guys being sexually and physically assaulted in the majority of this series.

Trigger Warning: for on page physical abuse and off page sexual abuse.

Pośrednio pokazuje pustkę i bezwzględność celebryckiego światka.

Another satisfying paranormal romance from Kim Fielding! Someday I want to read these stories back to back but I’ll wait until the series ends, and I hope that’s not in the near future. In this story, agent Terry Brandt of the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs is going undercover at the home of a famous Hollywood agent. Something is not right with the way he ensnares his clients so Terry is set up as a movie star wannabe to get to the bottom of it.

The dogs who accompany the agent and guard Terry around the clock appear to be very intelligent, so much so that when Terry talks to them, they seem to understand. But when he compares the collar around the neck of his human guard—sexy, muscular, quiet Edge—to the collar on the dog that seems most intelligent, he realizes the truth. Edge and his brothers are dog shifters. And Terry is head over heels for Edge.

The story is short but the author sketched amazing character descriptions and a complete plot that led to a few painfully violent scenes, a few tender, loving moments, and a complex plot that ultimately leads to an HEA for the couple. At times, it’s hair-raising, nail-biting, and fast-paced action, but overall, it’s simply a well-written drama with memorable characters and a satisfying outcome. I highly recommend this and others in this series to readers who love action drama and paranormal activity mixed in with MM romance.

I enjoyed Chained quite a bit. Like the previous book in the series, Creature, it was longer than the first two books and showed greater depth and character development as well as more interaction between the main characters. I liked Terry and Edge and their story, but of the four books in the series, Creature is still my favorite. Although Chained was compelling and enjoyable, I didn’t find it quite as poignant and moving as Creature.

Once again, though Fielding says these books can be read in any order and as stand alones, I will still recommend reading them in order. They definitely can stand alone but I find the little tidbits and references to the previous books make me appreciate each book that much more. Without context, the tidbits wouldn’t have the same positive impact.

Prior to now, I have hesitated to say whether I’d recommend the series or not. At this point, I will say that I do. The exploration of good and evil, man and monster has been intriguing and moving. It’s also been unexpectedly soothing somehow. Though I still hesitate to rate the books individually, as a whole, I’d give the series 4 stars so far.

Now on to book 5, Convicted!

This is my first time reading a book in this series, and I didn’t have any trouble following along, so it can easily be read as a stand alone. However, it did make me want to go back and read the others. I love paranormal stories that venture from the every day stories we have been used to. Here, we have canine shifters. Edge is one of three dogs Bureau agent Terry encounters on his undercover mission to get to the bottom of the shady dealings the Bureau believes Edge’s boss is involved in.

Terry hopes to become the client of Edge’s boss who is known for turning people into Hollywood stars. But there is much more to the story there, as Terry learns and almost becomes victim to. It is during the probationary period where he is being vetted that Terry meets Edge, the one tasked with keeping an eye on Terry.

Edge is one of three security dogs. They were bought as pups and trained to obey and see to whatever needs their boss deems fit. Unfortunately, Edge is the pup who takes the brunt of the boss’ anger, aggression, etc. by way of beatings and horrible treatment. As miserable as he is, his upbringing keeps him loyal and resigned to his position. It isn’t until he is pushed to give himself to Terry that he begins to see or think anything else.

I loved the idea of this story where the dogs were concerned. Admittedly, the other aspect didn’t really grab me, but it doesn’t take long for that to work itself out leaving the dog issue remaining. I loved seeing the pups find a better life and found it very satisfying to see the offer made to Terry and Edge. Along that same path, I’m really looking forward to the next installment where the guys take on the dog breeding case. That interesting storyline caught my attention, carried through, and has me excited for more. Recommend you pick this up if you enjoy something a bit different in your shifter stories.

Nobody can do a tormented-creature story better than Kim Fielding. This melancholicly human Boris Karloff vibe she's able to weave into the characterization of her so called monsters is beautiful and draws me in everytime she's doing that kind of magic. The balance on that delicate path between pity and empathy seems so effortless and easy if you follow her lead and Chained is no exception there. She even doesn't lead you astray with a false happy ending (don't worry, it's happy and more than a mere HFN).

Nearly from the start I couldn't do anything else than care for Edge who was bred and trained as the perfectly guard dog for his master although he's as much men as he's dog and said master is anything than caring. Why should he treat his dogs better than his clients anyway. Whittaker is that soulless, power hungry villain this kind of story needs. His one-dimensionness works quite fine and doesn't distract the reader from the relation between Edge and Terry.

So why less than 4 stars? The thing is that I don't understand why Terry cared about Edge so soon. A certain connection between both was important for the story and because it's still a short story there wasn't much time to establish it. I wouldn't doubt Terry's deeper feelings for Edge if he knew what the reader knew (especially told in Fielding's words) but he didn't. At that point in time Edge was stoic muscle, sexy but bland and for all Terry knew only there to keep him in line and report everything to Whittaker. Deep brown eyes and the kind of body made for Terry's attention aside I didn't believe in the insta-connection without knowing about Edge's background.

Kim Fielding is the master of novellas.

Chained follows Terry Brandt, a Bureau agent, who has been sent undercover to infiltrate a Hollywood agent, Whitaker, who is suspected to be involved in using unnatural means to get his clients famous.

Edge works security for the agent. Whitaker seems to have an unusually tight lease on Edge. Even so Brandt and Edge hit it off, an emotional connection forms between them.

As Brandt continues to search for evidence, what he finds is much more disturbing than previously thought, and Edge's safety becomes his top priority.

This was an awesome story about the agent Terry, and Edge - a dog shifter. It was set in 80's, which gave me flashbacks and brought a smile to my face...until I read the harrowing shit that Edge dealt with. My eyes got teary. I was cheering my ass off when the baddies got theirs! Bow-wow, MFs!
But never fear...there is an HEA.
I'm really diggin' this series, and I have to admit that they ARE NOT CLIFFHANGERS, as I had originally thought. The books can be read as standalones, although I'd suggest reading them in order if all are going to be read.

I've enjoyed every book in this series, and this one's no exception. Fielding is great at characterization, those subtle clues to deeper natures sprinkled in so that when things get dicey or details are shared, true selves shine. This story has no sex scenes, for those who want to know such things, but there is heroism. That's my favorite.

CW: sadistic beatings, ownership of persons, drug use.

What can I honestly say? If you’ve read Kim Fielding then you know this was good read. Even her novellas have more depth than a lot of full length books.

I wouldn’t say this was the strongest story in this series but it was still enjoyable and a perfect rainy day read.

I’m not always a fan of short reads, but this one really works. In less than 150 pages, the author was able to create a terrific paranormal romance with fully realized characters that had me completely hooked.

Set in 1989, Chained involves an investigation of a shady Hollywood agent by Terry Brandt, who works for the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs. Terry at first seems rather shallow, the kind of guy who lives for his job while avoiding personal entanglements. But as the story goes on, the reader learns that Terry has reasons for not getting too close, including losing people to AIDS.

While he’s undercover, Terry meets Edge, who provides security for the nefarious agent. Since this is a Bureau story, I think it’s OK to reveal that Edge is a supernatural creature, but you’ll have to read to discover more. Suffice it to say, his story not a happy one.

Edge feels that he must be loyal to the agent, even though the man takes advantage of him and abuses him horribly. Edge’s loyalty doesn’t stop him from having doubts, though, doubts that come to a head once he is assigned to keep an eye on Terry, who treats him with kindness and consideration. As the two men spend time together, they come to care about each other, setting the stage for both their romance and the resolution of Terry’s investigation.

In addition to well-drawn characters and an interesting plot (one that even has a bit of a twist), I have to mention the strength of Fielding’s worldbuilding. The paranormal elements are great, but so is her depiction of 1989 Los Angeles. She does an especially good job of painting the devastation of the AIDS epidemic with just a few mentions in the story.

I’d highly recommend this book for anyone who likes paranormal romance. It’s the fourth in Fielding’s Bureau series, but you don’t have to read all the others to enjoy it.

A copy of this book was provided by the author for review; all opinions expressed are my own.

Oh yeah, now I remember why I liked the first three stories in this series so much! Mystery, suspense, creatures, good guys, bad guys...I feel like I'm talking about The Princess Bride here...and that kiss at the end. Well, not really, but you get the gist. Short and pretty much perfect, that's what each one of these are. Hope I don't wait so long to read the next one.
