The first novella of five for The Affinities Series, THE PIXIE PRINCE explores how Calder and Nero became allies in the year before Adara's arrival. This story can be read before the first full-length installment, BLOOD, but it will make more sense after.
Calder Mardurus should have known he was weird when a simple rainstorm invoked a headache so intense he couldn’t leave the house.Still, he’s in denial when two strange men whisk him and his sister away to Periculand. The town full of Affinities is also full of dangerous drama, and while his sister floats along, Calder struggles not to drown.
Calder was one of my favorite characters in BLOOD. I think him, Tray, and Adara had an incredible amount of depth and found myself immersed in their dynamics - so this book was enjoyable for me. I devoured it quickly - a good sign - and got insight into Calder's character, as well as insights into other students like Demira and Colton.
Keep up the good work, Kirsten!! I can't wait to start NERVE <3
This was 62 pages of why I loveee Calder aka my pixie prince 😍 The way he dealt with Nero in that last scene made my heart stop I swear. I love him because a)he's tough b)he cares c) he's really really smart. Glad Demira is not a part of his life anymore. Bye bitch

I read the first book of the series, BLOOD, last year, which introduces an array of teen misfits with abilities called affinities—think X-men but assigned to different houses like Harry Potter. In that book, one of the characters who stood out to me was Calder Mardurus, whose affinity is for water. His character was interesting because of his moral complexity. You wouldn’t call him a good guy, but he wasn’t a complete degenerate either. Not like Nero, the bully of the campus he aligns himself with. Since the PIXIE PRINCE promised insight into Calder’s background, I was curious enough to pick it up. And it did a thorough job of fleshing out his character, displaying the dynamics between him and his troubled twin, Nixie, that leads him to his reluctant alliance with the bad guys at the school where all those with an affinity are sent to train.
I recommend this novella, and the series as a whole, to those who enjoy snark—there’s a lot of it—and a snappy, almost comic-book like approach to the rivalry and relationships within the walls of Periculand. One of Kirsten’s strengths as a writer is character development, and you get it in spades with the wide and diverse cast her series will introduce you to.
We all know I love a bad boy in a book, and Calder is that, but one with a heart and blue hair? Excuse ME!
He’s such a complex character. Everything he does seems to be for someone else to some degree - like helping Ruse or teaming with Nero. He needs to do something for himself. Also he’s so fearful of water yet its his power? And his flirtations? I s w e a r. This boy.
I love him in everything he turns up in, all these novels, and I can’t wait to see him more through the next full book (I’ve read both Blood & Nerve before this point). I need more!
I loved reading the background to Calder! Getting the insight to his character was really interesting. It made me like him seven more. And it came in very useful to the second book.
Okay, so listen folks, we get our first novella and it’s all about MY FAVE BOY. Calder is a mischievous asshat and seemingly the potential love (hate, emphasis on the hate) interest of the MC of Blood. That aside, he’s brilliant on his own. Who needs girls (just kidding, Calder’s a twin package with Nixie who’s totally awesome, go babe!) but really, it was interesting to go back in time and see what the school seniors were up to when they started their first year. And we get to say hello to the old school staff too (Aethelred ftw). The continuing high school drama, hormones, new bonds and relationships, humor and betrayal, it’s all there. I’ve always preferred character development to plots and this novella defo takes a better look into the Mardurus twinzies’ backgrounds.
Nixie brings a gothic touch to this pretty mess and I love her for it. The girls in this series are all so iconically different from each other and this novella introduces more of the badass ones so I can’t decide which way to drool. Not to mention Calder’s friend group of guys who’ve become my all time favourites. I’ve already read the following books in the series and these goddamn boys need their own show.
Ok I have to be honest, I’m writing this review way too late seeing as I read it a good while back so it’s freaking NAGGING at me that I can’t remember all the genius details I could add here. The upside though: I get to reread this beauty and to wish I was on the receiving end of all the flirt again ehe ehe
The author could’ve totally written a whole novel based on Calder. Is it too late to switch the MCs now? Lol no but I’m so glad we got this gem of a novella, a lil treat for the thirsty ones out there but just enough to keep the mystery and spark alive that is mr. Calder freaking Mardurus SO GIVE IT A READ PEOPLE
The Pixie Prince—what a character! The author made me fall in love with him from the first pages he appeared in Blood and my love for him has grown tremendously over the course of the series, but this little book always makes me come back to the roots of this fascinating creature called Calder. It has been a while since I have read it and I still owe the novella the review which it is worth. In all honesty, I’m a sucker for backstories for the colour they add to a character and with this book the author did a terrific job. I can’t wait to read more!
Wow, this novella is such an insightful and exciting prequel to Blood!
I think I enjoyed this book even more than I enjoyed Blood, if that’s even possible! It focused on the characters I most wanted to know more about, delving deeper into the mysteries hinted at in the first book of The Affinities series!
Calder and Nixie Mardurus, son and daughter of unfortunate circumstances, are brought to the puzzling Periculand, where they are confronted with a choice: to side with the fearful and powerful bully Nero, or be his enemy. Nixie makes her choice fairly early on, and basks in her unprecedented success, while Calder chooses to remain uninvolved for as long as he can. The ending, I must say, is incredible. (Dare I compare it to the tortoise and the hare?)
Anyway, I enjoyed learning about these secondary characters so much that I’m going to read Blood all over again just to look at it with more insight, (with these characters’ behaviours, opinions and placing in the school’s hierarchy explored)! I personally can’t wait to find out what happens between Calder and protagonist of Blood, Adara. (I am really hoping for a love-hate-denial relationship!)
5/5 stars! I can’t wait to read more from this series!

This is a great prequel Novella! Being a simple, easy read I enjoyed my time delving further into Calders character. We have a lot of questions about him after Blood, The Pixie Prince not only answers some of these questions, but leaves us with some new ones to take into the next book. Not only do we learn more about Caulder, but we get insight into other characters in his year as well as some insight into Neros gang. I especially liked learning about Calders mysterious roommate and his intriguing power and the estranged history between Calder and Ruse.
