This book is clearly well-researched and thought out and gives a very broad overview of a massive range of issues that queer folks face while simultaneously being detailed enough to be useful and informative (this is a really difficult balance to strike, and the author did it quite well).
The first chunk of the book defines each of the identities within LGBTQIAP and talks about some issues that are faced by people who identify that way. Also included throughout are snippets of interviews with people of various identities, which are extremely informative.
The second chunk of the book talks about religion and things that people can do in order to support queer family members, politics, and the process of coming out.
Overall, this book was really good and quite informative. It is something that could be very helpful to parents or relatives of queer folks who don’t have a lot of exposure to the queer community. It may not be helpful to people who are already familiar with a lot of these things as a lot of it was quite basic (which is not a bad thing).
My two critiques of this book are:
1) I don’t feel the problem of deadnaming was emphasized enough in the trans and queer sections. Deadnaming is a MAJOR problem faced by people in these communities, and it should be driven home that it is extremely harmful and hurtful.
2) The asexual section is the only one that didn’t have any interviews. I was surprised that it was included in the first place, but at least one interview would have been nice.
